I hate you, I don’t even know you, and I hate your guts. I hope all the bad things in life happened to you and nobody else but you.

The reviews for Will Ferrell’s The Hawk are not good. The Independent, with the headline Netflix Golfing Comedy, gives Will Ferrell his own crappy Gilmore two stars out of five. The Hollywood Reporter said, you might think it would be impossible for a TV show featuring Will Ferrell, Molly Shannon, Jimmy Tacho, Fortune Fimester, Chris Pornell, and David Hornsby not to generate at least a few laughs. Perhaps the biggest issues that everybody’s essentially playing to type. Fortune Fimester is more or less the same filteralistic centric she played on shows like Foo Bar or the short lived Middy Kayling sitcom Champions.

Chris Parnell abuse his PGA board member with the same disarmingly perky charm he’s been peddling for decades. Molly Shannon is perhaps the standout, though even her withering scorn is nothing new. No one feels real, least of all Ferrell. They add. Ferrell is a performer whose glory days have seemingly passed.

Next up. We have a WNBA joke that isn’t that bad, but I think he mispaced it ended comedy. Timing is everything, and I also think this kind of joke would have worked better for say Shane Gillis.

I also want to shout out the WNBA players for signing a new deal and they’re not making more money than ever before. Yes, yes, it’s a lot of new money in the WNBA. Man opening up the door for a new reality show basketball husbands and wives, but mostly wives. Okay, Marcelo? How about the World Cup?

World Cup is the time when American sports fans remember what the word world means. They usually think it means the US and one team from Toronto. I will say it has been amazing to see Americans learn about soccer and Europeans learn about ranch dressing. And I have something to say to the Europeans. Come in here.

It’s not so easy to stay skinny here, is it. I’ve really enjoyed watching you slim snobs eating like delicious junk food and this is real karma. If he comes on Daily Comedy News, I’m probably gonna ask him about like Saturday Night Live and some comedy stuff that he’s done, and then eventually I’ll get to it. USA Today caught up with Marcelo Hernandez, who does one thing and does one thing well, maybe possibly he does two things. Well, is the second thing being funny? No, no, it’s playing soccer. Morselo Hernandez was recently spotted at a World Cup game, specifically Columbia versus Portugal. He was photographed in a suite with John Leguizamo and Matt Damon.

Pretty fancy. Marcelo said he introduced Matt Damon to both his mother and younger cousin. He says, of hanging with the actor, You’re next to Matt Damon for long enough that you like. If I don’t say something, I’m an idiot. So I asked questions and I try to get some game from him.

When I played soccer, if I was ever with somebody was playing on a better team or older than me, you try to ask them questions. USA Today tells us hernand has played soccer right up through college at John Carroll University, he quit three years into his sophomore year to pursue comedy. Boy, we could have had one of the great soccer players of all time. Instead, we have a guy who does one thing on Saturday Night Live, According to the university, after a day of classes in soccer practice at night, Hernandez would uber to comedy clubs to work on his set. Eventually he realized he had to choose whose Wisely he did not.

Hernandez recalls, I had to tell the team with tears in my eyes that I’m quitting. That drove me to work hard because I was like, if I’m gonna quit something that I’m kind of good at, I should get really good at this new thing. Unfortunately, Marcelo’s plan failed, and he got kind of good at the new thing, but not really good at it. He does one thing pretty well. Hernandez believes he’s probably better now at comedy than he ever was at soccer.

Oh, he must have been a terrible soccer player then. Despite playing Division IREE in college and earning an All first team honors in Miami as a high school senior must have been a pretty crappy league. Marseillo says soccer is a full time job because you’re taking care of your body, and I think that SNL is a full time job because of the schedule. You’re also taking care of your mind. You’re trying to write stuff.

It’s a much more mental game than a physical game. But pretty demanding for sure. I’m curious about that trying to write stuff part, because I haven’t seen it. Establishing comedian Gianmarco Soresi continuing to do mainstream press. He talked to Wirecutter and had some travel tips for us.

I think, like if it’s brutal, you could ask, but that’s just what you sign up for. Gianmarco Soresi I’m a big fan. He’s the Community of the Year twenty twenty six. He of course is wrong about reclining. Reclining should be permanently banned on all planes.

You don’t need to recline. You just do it because the button’s there. Same as when everybody first got free minutes and everybody was on their cell phone all the time on trains and planes and being annoying. You were just doing it because you had the minutes. He didn’t have anything to say.

Same thing the reclining button. If we take the button away from you, you’ll be mad for like two seconds one time, and you will get over it. No more reclining. Let’s keep it technical. Wired had caught up with Pete Holmes.

Remember we did this a little bit last Sunday while I saved some of it Beach Friday. You know what I’m saying. Yeah, you know what I’m saying. Pete Holmes sells us he has eighty unread texts. He says, the thing I do most so often when I read a text is market is unread.

That was the greatest achievement of tech in the past ten years. If my wife texts me, it’s different, but a lot of times I feel people just bugging you. It’s like, do I work for you? When did we start? Somehow, all of life feels like we work at an office.

AI is going to lead to so much disinformation in your inbox, even in your text, that we’re all going to slowly walk away. We’re just going to be like amish. We’re going to be hanging out in person and talking again.

We’re going to be meeting up and having coffees way more. How many unread emails does he have? Fifty five, four hundred and twenty six. He says, If you reply to an email more than three times, you have to start a fresh thread. I’m not going to dig through.

I’m getting better at being like you don’t have to do that. I don’t think it’s a show business thing. I just think I’m forty seven years old. What computer does Peede Holmes have? He says, a MacBook Air with the M two chip.

I had a slightly thin, kind of fun one that snapped in my backpacks. I just bought this pretty thoughtlessly, which kind of a shame. This was my I just need a laptop. Laptop. There have been other laptops I’ve had far more feelings about.

There was a MacBook era eleven inch that I still think about. It was the smallest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. And there was a MacBook that was seventeen inches. It was huge. I still think about those computers like their old friends.

Favorite news source of Pete Holmes none zero. I get my news from people. This is my unreliable, biased news source, and there’s nothing more fun than watching them fumble through the mismatch. They can’t even remember why. They’re angry and scared.

Favorite subreddit none. The folks over at McCalls asked Jeff Foxworthy what inspired the you who might be a redneck one lighters. Jeff said, back when I was starting out, would go to places like New York and LA. Guys would go, look, Jeff, I don’t hurt your feelings, but you got to take voice lessons and lose that stupid accent you got. It was all good natured fun, but they were always saying I was an old redneck from Georgia.

One night, I was in Michigan and I was telling them about how I wish I could be sitting at a tree in the morning because it was deer season. They were laughing and calling me a redneck. I said, if you don’t think you have rednecks in Michigan. The club we’re at now is attached to a bowling alley that is valley parking. That night, when I got back to the hotel, I decided to write ten ways you know if you’re a redneck.

The next night, not only do people laugh, they were pointing each other. That’s when I thought, if I could have ten, can I ride thirty? And if I can ride thirty, can I rate one hundred? Jeff? Of all the highlights in your career, what’s the most memorable?

Jeff said, If I had to pick one, it would be the first time doing Johnny Courson. Back then, there were only three channels. That if Johnny like you long enough to call you over the couch, that made your career. So I was out there doing five hundred shows a year, grinding. When I finally got the Tonight Show and could do my six minutes, they pulled me aside and tell me, if Johnny doesn’t like you, he’ll just clap.

If he likes you, he’ll give you the big OK sign, and if he loves you, he’ll call you over to the couch. At the end of my six minutes, I was scared to look because it was like Caesar deciding whether I live or die. But it looked over and there’s Johnny waving me over to the couch. My only plan when I started doing comedy was to be on Johnny Carson. I remember going home that night after the show, just laying there in the dark.

I stared at the ceiling and couldn’t stop thinking about how I’d made Johnny laugh. That’s all I wanted to do. Isn’t that fantastic? The Laconia Daily Sun caught up with my former coworker, Jim Brewer. Jim told the story about the time Jie Peshe, he was a guest on the show.

Brewer used to do a Peeshe impression. Jim meets Pesche and says he’ll never forget it. After about ten minutes, he didn’t know if he had disrespected the actor. Jim said, he confronts me. He gives me the whole Good Fellows Tommy seen scared the living snot out of me.

I was like, I’ll never do the sketch again, but then he said, ah, busted you, chops. I thought I was gonna have to pay him. Commission star trek Ruiner Pat Oswald talked about how he dresses for different occasions. He told Forbes, I have a travel suit, which is a nicely pair of jeans, really good walking shoes, and then this short sleeved hoodie with a pocket in front that I could shove stuff in when I’m in the airport. Then I have my wheeled two me suitcase there is a very specific one that fits in the overheads, and then my two me briefcase that slides onto it perfectly.

When I’m on stage, it’s always a T shirt and a button up shirt. Nothing crazy, but I dress nice for the stage. It’s same clothing during the days I have to travel. Keep it really simple. I don’t like to have too much stuff, especially on a travel day when I have enough anxiety because the airports have gotten so insane.

Now I make the preparation for travel just no brain or stuff. Here’s his travel ritual. Pat Noswald tells Forbes, this is gonna sound kind of insane. I bring a ziplock bag of PG tips, tea bags and When I land, I buy some honey, and I always asked for an electric tea kettle in the hotel room so I can make myself that specific cup of tea, two bags honey. That’s a reset for me and helps me calm down.

And The Toronto Guardian as a series where they speak with local comedians. How about comedian Nick Burden. Nick practices what he calls beautiful nonsense or freestyle yelling, a crowd heavy and prophesyational style shape more by people watching as a self described social butterfly than by any specific comedic influences. That’s very complicated there, Nick Burton. He explains, although I do have a lot of material, everyone has a story.

Because I do a lot of international shows, I enjoy hearing about different people’s lives, perspectives, et CETERA. Favorite comedian growing up Dave Chappelle, because literally every millennial group on the Spell Show. Favorite comedian right now sounds basic in mainstream, but honestly, there’s nobody more effortlessly funny than Shane Gillis. Dude’s an animal. Favorite place you’ve performed comedy Budapest, amazing city with a vibrant nightlife scene and super cool venues.

So many people from all over the world go there to party. So every time I’ve done a show there, you always get like fifteen plus nationalities in the audience. Super cool. He was asked to tell them a joke about Toronto, and he said, nah, I’m off the clock. That’s your comedy news for today.

Caloroga Shark Media. Saturdays this summer for deep dives on single topics. Helloo, I’m Johnny Mac and let’s start in Chicago. It’s two thousand and two. We are in a rat infested basement.

Aprighetzi’s there with his friend Michael Clay. They were meeter readers at a water company back home, and they decided they were going to become comedians. They moved to Chicago and rented a basement they nicknamed the Dugout, and they signed up for classes at Second City, you know, the improv factory that gave you Bill Murray Tina Fey half of every SNL cast for fifty years. Nate did it for a minute and figured out pretty quickly improv was not his thing. He switched over to a stand up program run by a guy named Jim Routh.

Nate did his first set in April of two thousand and three and started picking up scraps around Chicago and back home in Nashville. H my name’s Nate. It might be hard to understand me. And sometimes I come in New York City. I’m just going from Nashville.

I’ll wear this shirt for a couple of reasons. So if I get questions like that, they just they’re oh okay. If people come in late, they know they don’t have to interrupt us by asking. They’ll just read my shirt and they can’t figure that out. And they’re probably from Nashville too.

You’re probably have the same shirt. I also wear it in case I get lost people not wearing the sinem It’s kind of like a dog leash. I got my name to know where written in the back. This part of the story matters because it skips the aprighetsy creation, myth that he’s this wholesome Nashville guy. His dad’s a magician, he does clean comedy.

It skips the part where he actually came up in Chicago. He wasn’t a regional guy who got discovered. He went did the unglamorous thing the comedians do, which has moved somewhere else with a real comedy scene, and get humiliated in front of small rooms until something clicks. In two thousand and four, Nate moved to New York City. He got a job as a barker for the Boston Comedy Club, which is a club in New York City, which meant standing in Greenwich Village handing out flyers in exchange for stage time at night.

You ever see these guys, they’ll be like, hey, do you like stand up comedy? It is a rough gig. Nate was also driving for FedEx and walking dogs during the day to make the rent. But back in those days, the Boston Comedy Club was a real room. Dave Chappelle came through there, Bill Burr, Patrise, O’Neill, Louis C.K.

Nate has talked about watching those guys from the back, paying close attention to comedians who were not doing clean comedy, and he has said it took close to a year before he got his first actual paying gig in New York City. He described those early years as doing as many as seven sets a night, bouncing between rooms, which by his account, is too many. Nate will tell you five is the realistic ceiling before you stop being able to tell what you’re even saying anymore, Nate forgets. He stayed in New York City for almost nine years, nine years of the comedy seller the Stand Carolines. That’s where where he got the education, the place where he built the timing and the writing instincts that everybody now associates with effortless dad comedy, except none of it was effortless, and none of it happened in Nashville.

He built this in rooms that were dirty and rowdier than almost anything he had ever performed himself. And the interesting part is that people in the quote unquote mainstream comedy culture openly liked him, despite Nate being nothing like them. The detail that the dirty comics of that era genuinely loved Nate tells you that the cleanliness was never a defensive posture. It’s just who he was tested against an audience that had every incentive to expose him if he wasn’t real. Part of the discovery story I don’t hear about involves Mark Maren.

Maren saw Nate at a festival called LaughFest back in twenty twelve and tweeted about him and brought him on to WTF that same year. Mark Maren not exactly known for a wholesome sensibility, not exactly the Nashville demo, but Maren always had a sharp eye for who’s actually good underneath the surface presentation, and he clocked Nate almost immediately. That WTAF appearance did something specific for Nate’s career, put them in front of an audience of comedy people, the exact opposite of the casual audience had been known for, and that audience responded because the writing was that strong. I think I got a fascination with people that live in the South. I want them to h to set me straight on it and and and make me appreciate it as a place where a lot of different kind of people live, and not just the kind of people that are stereotypically Southern.

Yeah, we’re like the rest of the country, you are, except New York and LA the only ones that are different. Oh really, I think so. So we’re the assholes. I mean sort of like y’all Like New York always baffles me because they’re like they are like so small on America. Yeah, and they’re just like this is how it is, and this is how y’all are.

And I’m like, in your own state, their people are not like that, Like they’re your own Like they’re You’re only thirty miles away from hill people, yeah, like I mean very close. Yeah. And my people that I can go talk to and get out. Let’s go to upstate in the town. Of seven and they get it.

They get me. They I can go to Walmart and walk around and breathe and feel good about myself. Around that time, Jim Gaffigan was advocating for Nate, calling him one of the best up and comers in the business. Jimmy Fallon found him around the same time and put him on Late Night in twenty thirteen, then brought Nate onto something called the Clean Cut Comedy Tour, which Nate used that year to win both the New York and Boston Comedy Festivals. Ladies and gentlemen, please give it up for Nate by got it.

Thank you, Thank you everybody that was exciting, you know, it felt it felt good, all right. I’m from Tennessee originally. Yeah, so that’s something. And I lived in New York though for years. I’m on board in New York.

I like it. It’s I like the driving. It’s like great, It’s very intense. It’s everybody just honks it, everybody NonStop. And that’s how it should be everywhere, you know, like growing up in the South, no one honks their horn ever.

People just sit at lights and they’re just like, if you want to go, I totally understand. Conan had him on the Old TBS Show back in two thousand and eight and brought him back multiple times over the years. Very excited to be out here. Love getting to travel a bit. I’ve been through a lot of different countries lately, and it’s always weird because like every time I go to another country, I don’t never know where it’s at.

Uh, because I’m from Tennessee. I didn’t learn about countries in school. I learned about Tennessee. I learned about the states that touched us in case they attacked, and then I was told the rest was Europe and that’s where the gays were made. So by the time most casual audiences eventually discovered Nate through a Netflix special The Actual Comedy Folks Maren Gaffigan Vallan Conan other comedy Snobs You Me had already spent close to a decade quietly insisting he was one of the best pure writers working.

Twenty fourteen, yelled At by a Clown eight number two on the Billboard Comedy Charts. Full Time Magic followed in twenty fifteen, the title of that one a nod to his dad’s actual career as a working magician. In twenty nineteen, The Tennessee Kid, That’s the One a lot of the comedy nerds points to is the moment the writing fully arrived was now confident specific less about proving it could be clean and more about just being funny on his own terms. No Gimmick twenty twenty One’s the Greatest Average American on Netflix got made a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album. Then he switched teams twenty twenty three, Hello World went to Amazon Prime.

That became the most streamed original comedy special in Amazon’s history in its first twenty eight days.

And then there was Saturday Night Live.

Nay Brighetzi hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time on October twenty eighth, twenty twenty three, was the Halloween episode Season forty nine, Your Musical Guest, The Foo Fighters. His monologue ran long, the response strong enough that both Vanity Fair and Entertainment Weekly both wrote him up as a standout. He would come back and host again less than a year later October fifth, twenty twenty four, and season fifty Your Musical Guest Coldplay That tells us a lot. That’s Lord Michael’s making a specific bet that Nate brigets he could deliver ratings and a clean broadcast back to back. Of course, the famous moment is from the first appearance Washington’s Dream.

He plays George Washington walking his soldiers through an absurdly over complicated system of measurements, weights and measures. Sir, Yes, as I dream of that one day our proud nation will measure weights and pounds, and that two thousand pounds shall be called a ton, and what would one thousand pounds be called, sir nothing. That became one of the most clipped sketches of the season, and Vulture actually ran a piece asking if Nate had cracked the SNL code, whether his specific deadpan, patient’s style had found a way to work inside of a format that chews up most posts. Lord Michaels does not invite anyone back to host within a year. By accident that, in my opinion, was peak Nate.

Dennis starts to get a little rocky, not too bad, but a little old. There was the Emmy hosting gig. In twenty twenty six, CBS announced Nate as the host of the seventy seventh Emmis. The monologue leaned into a bit built around Nate’s reputation, the premise that he was terrified of offending anyone in a room full of famous, powerful people, using his clean image as the engine of the joke rather than working around it. Look at us, we’re doing it, all right.

Welcome to the seventy seventh Emmy Awards. You know, it’s not a big one like seventy five or eighty, but it’s the one that gave me. It’s an honor to be here tonight. I mean, I’m so excited to be here. Just all you guys have worked so hard to get here.

I mean. And it’s confusing too, because it’s just like we even McIntyre feel like I’m about the Grammys, Kate Lanchette feel like I’m aout the Oscars. Crazy Tina Fey. I thought like they should have had her host, you know why. A lot of people were wondering, like why am I hosted?

I I don’t know what that was, but all right, it counts as a laugh. It’s on paper. Maybe it worked in the room. People felt it ran out of gas before it found its second gear. The reviews afterward were not kind.

Award show hosting is chewed up funnier people and even more successful than David Letterman comes to mind under better circumstances, but it exposed something about the gap between his strength and the longer format. SNL gives him four minutes with a premise he can control, and Emmy’s monologue is fifteen plus minutes addressing a room that you know isn’t there for you.

And then Nate made a movie, an actual movie.

The Breadwinner hit theaters May twenty ninth, twenty twenty six. The pitch his wife, Mandy Moore’s character Lance a shark tank deal and now she he’s the one with the career and Nate’s stay at home dad bumbling around with the three daughters. Yeah, that’s it. That’s the movie. If you know Nate’s old deal, you know exactly what every scene looks like.

The reviews were not kind. Roger Ebertsite called it Burgatsley, which is pretty good.

And then there was the UFC event on the south lawn of the White House.

It was UFC Freedom two fifty, which was also part of the President’s eightieth birthday celebration. Nate was there. His representative put out a statement saying Nate is not political, nor is anything he produces, and called him a huge UFC fan who just wanted to watch fights. All that brings us to Nateland.

In twenty twenty three, Nate launched Nateland Entertainment, not a touring brand, on a merch line and actual production company. The state ad mission is family friendly content across stand up, special sketches, scripted shows, podcast music, the whole apparatus.

And then he started to actually use it to actually build other comedians’ car…

He’s done great with that. Look at the Nateland roster. Dusty Slay, Aaron Webber who got a debut special produced by Nate Nateland, Nick Thune got one, Derek Stroop he was on Netflix, Julian McCullough, Joe Zimmerman, Lachlan Patterson, There was the Nateland podcast, Nateland at Sea, and actual cruise built around the brand. So while down in Austin, Tony Hinchcliff and Joe Rogan and Gang are doing one thing, Nate is building a quieter, more family oriented version of the same idea content company that gives emerging, clean leaning comedians, a real production budget, a real platform, and a real audience that already trusts the Nateland lame. So what do you do when you’re at the top of your game despite some minor stumbles in twenty twenty six, you start to think about walking away from it to open a theme park, an actual theme park on the site of Opryland, USA and Nashville that closed in nineteen ninety seven.

Nate plans to build the next great American theme park, a one hundred acre land named after himself. It will be called Nateland, he told the Wall Street Jourtle I’m the Mickey Mouse. The initial design for the park is divided into three sections based on Nate’s roots. Part of it will be Tennessee, part of it his journey to New York, and the rest He’s reach into the world beyond is as people magazine. Guests will enter through a nineteen ninety style mall.

The Tennessee themed land will have roller coasters at a donkey dive. The New York area will have street performers live shows at a ride through a simulated Times Square.

Back in twenty nineteen, Tom Sagora joke the key to his marriage was intimidation and saying, my wife is Kim jong Ill and I’m the people of North Korea. So obviously a big story if you follow comedians, and Tom is one of the bigger comedians right now.

You know, for me, I don’t come to it’s say to me when anyone’s marriage breaks up. This is very different to me than like, if Amy Schumer posts a picture on Instagram at a bikini, she wants us to talk about her, and I’m happy to poke fun at that. But this here is just, you know, I like seeing anybody break up. The New York Post said. Sigora hinted at the splits by titching his wedding ring during the latest episode, Monday’s episode of Two Bears One Cave.

That episode came out the same day of the news of the split. I’ll just caution everybody don’t read too much into that. I wasn’t wearing a ring for a while. You know why, because I play beach volleyball and my hands would swell and it was bothering me. And depending on how fat I am at a particular moment, sometimes the ring bothers you when you take it off, especially playing volleyball.

I’m used to playing it now and I’ve actually dropped some weight this summer. Some days it’s loose. Right now, it’s a little not loose, but you know what I mean. I can slip it on and off in other days it’s don’t read anything into that. Maybe Tom Sigoor is playing volleyball.

The innerk Post says the couple has not filmed an episode of Your Mom’s House Together since late April, during which Sigora wore his wedding ring and apparently somebody did the homework and saw that Tom had his wedding ring on all prior podcast episodes. In The Hawk, Will Ferrell stars as Lenny the Hawk Hawkins, a washed up golf legend who’s trying to make the sport’s greatest comeback by chasing one final major and in typical Will Ferrell fashion, that’s accompanied by plenty of chaos along the way.

The Holland Reporter compared it to Happy Gilmore So you can tell I’m excited about it. Fortune Fiemester is part of this. She wondered if the Hawk character would get along with Happy Gilmour. She said, the characters are so different. I think you love seeing these non golf type guys in the very buttoned up golf world.

That’s the comedy, the juxtaposition. I think they would give each other a pretty hard time but have a good time doing it. Will Ferrell said, I was really interested in the possibility of getting to shoot something in La and I was intrigued with playing a character for longer than ninety minutes in a film. According to Will, the character really only cares about himself and that’s what gets him back to the top of his game. Ten episodes Netflix, you’ll watch.

Speaking of golf, at the American Century Championship last week, Colin jos teed off from the par three seventeenth hole and nearly hit a hole in one. His ball rolls within an inch of the cup. Colin Jose pumped his arms in the air before ripping off his sunglasses and embracing the crowd’s roars. Scarlett Johansson, his wife, was there. Joe said Scarlett was like, Baby, if you’re gonna win this thing, I gotta be there like I got to see the champ in action because she kind of knew this was my year.

Unfortunately, for Colin Jost, that was his best shot. He had a couple bogies and did not win the championship. Remember the other day, I was recording the show and I didn’t have power, and I didn’t get to tell you what comedian Michael Loftist said about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey’s wedding. Loftist told Sky News. Set your watches on how long this lasts?

I give it three years tops, and then it’s over. I don’t know how she’s going to spin it. Somehow, he’ll be the bad guy, she’ll have her heartbroken, there’s going to be action figures, and she’ll probably be part of the Marvel Cinematic universe before it’s all over. Are you going to see the Odyssey? This weekend?

John Stewart had on director Christopher Nolan and said, holy s word, it’s a staggering work. I was utterly absorbed and transformed by the powerful storytelling and epic nature of it. But I don’t want to retire, and nobody who is my fan wants me to. I don’t feel any different really, quite frankly, act different than when I was forty.

I’m married, I don’t have kids. I still drink and smoke pot and blah blah blah. When my life changes, maybe the show where my career will change, but until it does, not retiring. Comedy Stock Markets, thank you. Bert Reynolds this week on the Comedy stock Market, we’re going to make some aggressive plays.

Okay, if you’re new to this. Every week we try and find value in the comedians. We try and sell high and buy low. And I’m not all that confident I’m right this week, but I’m gonna play some bets here. Let’s sell Will Ferrell.

I was looking at social media during the home run derby, and people were annoyed, and people were saying things like Will hasn’t been funny in fifteen years, and Will has passed his prime, and I haven’t seen this Netflix show or not. I’m sure right now if I log in, it’d probably number one in trending just because he is Will Ferrell. But I don’t know if people are kind of done with Will Ferrell. So let’s sell Will Ferrell. I might be wrong there, but that’s the recommendation.

Sell Will Ferrell. Let’s also sell Tom Segura. I’m seeing a lot of vibe of Tom lost weight and he’s gone Hollywood and he’s lost his way, and just the general public blaming Tom Sagora. I’m not in their marriage. I don’t know what goes on or not, so I wish them both well as I’ve said, I’m sorry anytime anybody breaks up, but you know, trying to make some hypothetical money here.

So let’s sell Tom Segura and let’s buy Tim Hideker. I’ve been spending some time on this new rebooted Info Wars, and what Tim high Decker is doing on there is amazing. I can’t stop watching it, basically making fun of the entire Alex Jones persona, and he has got my intention. So we’re gonna sell Will Ferrell, sell Tom Sigoram, We’re gonna buy Tim Hidecker. That’s your comedy stock market this week.

So those are your five. Jimmy Fallon’s got to feel pretty dopey being left out, and luckily Seth Myers isn’t on this list. Make twelve thirty great again.

But again I could see Oliver Kimmel and Colbert all getting one, And then what are we even doing? Do you believe in the Mendela effect? I do, because where I’m from, the guy from the Flight of the Concords used to be named Jermaine Clement, and at some point the R went out of his first name, and his name in this universe where I’m speaking to you today is Jamaine Clement, and I’m telling you that was not always true, Jamaine Clement told Vulture New Zealand political correctness came quite early. We still like to try and not insult whole groups of people, and we stuck with that. We then joked, oh, it’s cool to make fun of trans people.

I said, yeah, there’s no balance when people say, oh, the trans people are so sensitive, queer people are so sensitive because the people who were talking about them are at the top of the food chain.

If there was a trans comedian that was in the Forbes Top ten that could push back and give their perspective and their point of view, then it wouldn’t be as horrible. But there’s no balance. Sometimes that translates into violence. I got tired of that, and I decided to create the world I want to be in because I’m tired of fighting. Comedy and music bring people together.

Comedy is very subjective. There should be a spectrum either love George Lopez or fluffey, and there’s never any room for anything else. And there are many voices in comedy. With Frankie Conunius, we started a long time ago together. I thought This Fool was brilliant.

It was a great representation of the city. The fact that it took time to be part of something that represented La in the community in a way that you never see. Is so special to what’s happening right now. He has got a new show called The Remix, and I wanted to put all that stuff together and celebrate us because no one else is going to do it for us. No? Or maybe he is for his version of life, because he has a very different life. He’s Mick Jagger, that’s his name. He’s played to stadiums of twenty thousand people cheering for him like he’s a god for fifty years. That must change you as a person.

If you do that for fifty years, you’re never again gonna be like, does anyone have a laptop charger? I could borrow? You know, Mick Jagger didn’t talk like that. Mick Jagger talked like this. He’d go yes, no, Jase.

I pitched him a joke and he went not funny. Mick Jagger was recently interviewed by The New York Times. He said he had never seen that segment by John Mulaney, but admitted the experience of fame does affect you, Jagger said, you get disassociated from what people might call real life. A lot of people in show business only hang around with people in show business because they’ve got something in common. They can relate to each other, and you can get disassociated from what people might call real life.

I mean, you do fight against it. It’s a conscious effort. Jagger went on to say that he’s not really like his stage persona. He compares the experience to that of method actors, saying they take it to the absolute extreme, so they’re like the character all the time, and then after the movie’s over, they’re still in character. It takes a lot of time to slough off the characters.

Which character do you go back to? I spent two hours alone with Mick Jagger that week. We were writing song lyrics. It was for a fake song in a comedy sketch. And he was sitting there and we came to one point and he goes, all right, let’s all go to the picnic.

Let’s all have a drink. Let’s see what rhymes would drink? And I said think and Mick Jagger said no, And then I said sink and Mick Jagger said yeah, And I was like, is this how you write songs? Just one word at a time with verbal abuse? Say all right, I can’t get no happiness now satisfaction?

Shit? All right? Next sentence, faya indent face SA. Mick Jagger would go like this, He’d go di it coke and one would appear in his hand. Now that’s not nice, right, I was raised.

You’re supposed to say, may I please have a diet coke? Please, and then maybe you will get one? And I bet all of you were taught to say please and thank you. But if all of us could go diet coke and one would appear in our hand, we’d do it all day long. Even if you don’t like diet coke, you just summon them so you could chuck them in on coming cars.

It has been a busy week. I didn’t get to tell you about Dave Chappelle going to see Usher last Friday. There’s Usher, He’s performing his concert in Washington, DC. Suddenly Usher pauses mid performance. He scrunches his face and disbelief, and he calls out into the microphone.

Is that Dave Chappelle? Yes, it was Dave Chappelle. Now this happened during the Nice and Slow segment of the Usher concert. During an Usher set, he moves through the audience distributing Usher Bucks, which is custom currency he carries in a red bag. Chappelle had other ideas about the bag’s purpose.

He reached inside, grabbed a handful of the bills, and made it rain on nearby people. The arena erupted with laughter. I worked with Usher war and I didn’t know how to address him because I hadn’t really met him, and I tend to be very formal in these situations, Like, for example, if I were working with Dave Chappelle, I wouldn’t just be like hi, Dave. I would be like, hey, mister Chappelle until he waved me off. So if we were backstage and I had to tell him, you know, it’s time to go on, I’d be like, hey, mister Chappelle, We’re ready for you.

So Usher was the guest on Jamie Fox’s show, and I didn’t want to be like mister Usher, so I just had to call him Usher and seemed pretty fine.

And then that story reminded me I think I had blocked this out.

I was actually with Adam Sandler once, believe it or not, Yes, the great dramatic actor was at the super Bowl in Dallas and I was there overseeing Jamie Fox’s radio show. And the Big Boss, who is a star hugger, had my assistant who was his former assistant, go on a hunt and the bounty was Adam Sandler, and the assistant did deliver Adam Sandler. I don’t think I interacted with Sandler at all, but I was with him. Hit the movie right now, so we can, you know, just go with it, another block buster. That’s what we try to do, just like you do this.

No, please get out of it. I was talking. I was talking to your producing Yeah, Jamie, I never would have named Ray Charles. Yeah, movies would make money. Didn’t you make some money off that one?

I think I think it went right. Seemed like a nice guy and a groovy dresser, Johnny Mac. All you’re doing is talking about the cool comedians that everybody likes. What about the annoying comedians? Okay, listener, I’ll hook you up.

TMZ reports Amy Schumers, once again showing off her body. That’s right. Amy Schumer likes when we talk about her, and she shared a sexy photo on Instagram, says TMZ. Featuring Amy Schumer in a bikini with her slim toned figure. They write, check it out.

Amy strikes, supposing her two piece while sporting oversized sunglasses and big letters. The cap should reads C section peeking out saying yeah, I’m a warrior. TMZ then went out of their way to remind us you may recall. In twenty twenty five, Amy uploaded sizzling pictures of her slim down self and a Valentino mini dress, sending the Internet and a dizzy over her hot bod. Days later, she announced her divorce.

Meanwhile, Kathy Griffin all kinds of annoying. Last weekend. I don’t know if you saw this, Kathy Griffin posted a picture of herself holding hands with a young man. A young man is twenty two years old. She captured that post he’s twenty two.

Have added Internet and a couple emojis there, one of a fire and one of is this a basketball shooting? I don’t know what it is. I don’t speak emoji. That got the Internet at all talking about Kathy Griffin and her new twenty two year old boyfriend. You may recall.

Back in December of twenty twenty five, Kathy Griffin wrote an essay for The Cut about her divorce. She eventually tried dating apps, where she met younger men. Kathy wrote, at my age, if you can’t handle everything that goes along with me being Kathy Griffin and that’s a lot of bag it trot’s Kathy, then I’d rather hang out with my friends. But she did fall in love with someone who happened to be twenty three years old. She wrote, I was really in love with him.

He touched my heart. He came along at a time in my life when I was like, men suck, there’s only bad ones, and why do I pick the worst ones?

But he’s too young. We gave it a shot anyway, and we both went with it for a while, and then it came time to go. He made me feel sexy and special and smart and funny, had a lot of the elements of what I think would have made a real lasting relationship. He hadn’t been banged around that much. He’s so young that he didn’t have this baggage, and I just knew my baggage was gonna get in the way anyway back to the picture from last weekend of Kathy Griffin with a twenty two year old psych Kathy revealed it was all a joke.

She posted you guys crying emoji thanks to all who participated my social media sociological experiment. No, I’m not dating this twenty two year old. He was helping me with security during my trip to NYC. But what if I were. The reactions were fascinating, Kathy said.

Whatever makes you happy, Kathy. What annoys me is every story about Kathy Griffin is about attention. Kathy wrote, older men have been dating younger women since the beginning of time. Just ask Luke Wilson fifty four, who just had a beautiful baby with his twenty four year old girlfriend, or Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart, and Jay z and Beyonce some of the most long lasting, beautiful relationships in my beloved though agis and sexist industry. Congratulations to Kathy Griffin. We talked about you for several minutes over on Staten Island. SI Live tells us Pete Davidson will highlight this year’s Just for a Laughs Toronto Comedy Festival, joining a lineup that includes Tiffany Hattish and John Clees. Late Nighter tells us it’s official Late Night has a new ratings king. The new ratings king is Jimmy Kimmel, who posted the highest monthly ratings average of his entire twenty three year run.

So he wouldn’t be stupid and take the summer off to whistle away all that momentum. He’s not that stupid, is he. Jimmy Kimmel’s Late Night show average three point one five million viewers per night in June, up twenty four percent from May. When he used to have competition. There was this thing the Late Show at Stephen Colbert that nobody talks about anymore.

Kimmel led adults eighteen to forty nine, averaging five hundred and five thousand viewers in the demo, up one hundred and twelve percent month to month. Yeah, this is what I’ve been saying all along, Jimmy, that the Colbert exiles were gonna come to you.

Jimmy Kimmel, of course, is crazy taking the summer off. Variety wrote the article NBC’s best chance to boost Jimmy Fallon seth Myers may come during TV’s slow summer cycle. Brian Steinberg wrote of this particular week that I’m talking to you during Fallon launches NBC’s Tonight’s Show without any regular competitors, a throwback to the days when Johnny Carson osed the show before Our Senio and all that. Imagine switching hosts and being like, Hey, I’m uh, I don’t know who’s somebody ridiculous that they would put on. Hi, I’m Nicky Glazer. Welcome to the Tonight Show.

Now, that’s not going to happen. Variety catching on to one of the YouTube things not working, they wrote, Meanwhile, Julian Shapiro Bornham, who hosts Outside Tonight, none of his clips appeared to have generated more than ninety thousand views. But make it annoying and confusing, and expand upon this conspiracy theory that Alex Jones exploded and there’s a new impostor Alex Jones, a fake one that they’ve created. You know, Capital TV.

You can’t just go middle ground on this. We have to go to place with this where it’s not worth it for me. Questions remain, Who is this Alex Jones? I believe this is an imposter, This is a know it as a clone, but it’s somebody that they’ve managed to fool the world into believe in. Is is Alex Jones?

Why we’re gonna get into the why is this happening? I want to get into the video. The source of the video here, because we got some metadata on this. The video was created on my first Central Time on the same day that a man claimed to be Alex Jones relaunched his show under his new banner, the Alex Jones Network or Alex Jones Live. Metadata listen iPhone as a recording device and contains GPS coordinates, placing the camera on a residential street on the south side of Austin.

Now, this video was uploaded the X that afternoon by an account with no followers and no prior posts, so it’s a new account. This is kind of what caught my eye. The account was suspended forty seven minutes later. Look at forty seven think about who’s in charge? As late was curious.

Have you ever spoken to Alex Jones? Tim said no during that period. In twenty sixteen, when we were at the Republican National Convention, they were live streaming on the street and I interrupted their live stream. It’s on YouTube. You could see me doing my Alex Sjoon’s impression that his report.

He was there, and he was amused. If someone’s doing a pretty good impression of view, I think that’s kind of amusing. But he didn’t know who I was. He didn’t know I was a world class, legendary comedian. Louis C.K.

How do they know that that day is the day? That was it? That’s all he had, And I was like, I got it. So he’s coming off stage and I just go Jerry and he looks at me like, oh yeah, with this kid? What And I go, I got a bit and he goes, go ahead.

He’s kind of like, you have ten seconds and I go, you say, how do you know that’s the day? Is the guy milk and the cow? And the cow goes July third? Funny? And I knew it would work because his funny face being a cow.

Yeah, And he goes, oh, Jerry’s on Letterman, he’s sitting on panel, he’s telling jokes and he does that thing. How do they know that that’s the day? The crowds I’m listening to the crowds building that was the day? Are they milking the cow? The cow goes July third?

The next day, I’m walking around I think Central Park and I see Jerry. I bump into him on the street and he goes, hey, you’re a bit killed. And he goes, now you know that your mind, the way you think and your comedy can work in the big leagues, Like, now you know that? And I was like, so I felt like, now me and Jerry are you know?

We’re connected? I got a letterman thing. So then like a month later, he goes on the Tonight Show Johnny Carson sure does the joke again. I think he closed with it kills. And so then I see him at Ketch and I just walk up real familiar, Hey, I saw you did the bit on Carson and he goes, what like, do you remember this cow?

And he’s like, uh huh oh oh mirror. He’s kind of like, that’s enough now. And I’ve got a clip from Andrew Schultz. Now, every time I listen to Andrew Schultz, I just wonder, like, did people actually listen to this guy? I’m not pulling bunches today.

And then I have to Google to make sure I didn’t hallucinate this, but no, the New York Times really did print the headline Andrew Schultz podcast bro might be America’s foremost political journalists. And I have to say to you, no, it does make no sense.

But that is a thing that happened. I don’t know why, but yeah, the New York Times actually printed this, that Andrew Schultz podcast bro might be America’s foremost political journalist. It’s kind of late AL at the Place to Festivals. Apparently Al played there at the twenty fifteen just for laughs.

I guess I didn’t go to that one. That was probably just after my run it’s serious, and before I started getting back into all this stuff. I took a little break there. You know, I didn’t have the podcast yet. I probably didn’t even have the slacker job yet.

So it’s a little weird to just be like, hey, guys, I have no job, but I’m here at the festival, you know, so I stayed home. I guess that year. Bill Brownstein reminds us at the twenty fifteen just for laughs that the lineup was Mike Myers, Trevor Noah, Kevin Art, Dave Chappelle, Bill Burr, Jane Lynch, Star, Trek Runer, Baton Os Walt, Colin, Joe’s, Tom, Papa, JB. Smooth, Margaret Show, Jimmy Carr, Gilbert Gottfried, Sebastian Maniscalco, probably made a face, Janee Ruffalo, and Hasan Minhaj. That’s a pretty good lineup, but Bill says COVID came and took a devastating toll on JFL and most other festivals for several years.

Then competition unlike anything JFL had ever experienced came with the arrival of the biennial Netflix’s a Joke Festival. Make things worse were jfl’s financial issues and some other stuff I’ll let the lawyers argue about. Then the new owners showed up and rescued this thing in twenty twenty four, and we had a pretty normal festival last year. This year’s lineup includes David Letterman, Will Arnette, Jerry Seinfeld, Tiffany Hattich, Mike Berbiglia, Gabe Iglesias, May Martin, and of course we’re aw Nick Brazo is the head of programming for JFL. He picked out ten of his favorites from the lineup.

One of them Heated Rivalry, the unauthorized musical parody. There’s also Sibling Rivalry Live. Say that one time slow and you still trip over it. We’re told definitely not to be confused with the Heated Rivalry parody. Too late, this one will be equally unforgettable, featuring two of the world’s most famous drag queens, Bob the Drag Queen and Monett Exchange, bringing a live version of their hit podcast, The Improveniers Sir.

One of the truly feel good stories of this and any other festival. The cast together since twenty eighteen, is made up entirely by members with down syndrome. They use improv to break down barriers and put on both a great show and provide a very inclusive experience. That’s cool the Montreal series July sixteenth and seventeenth that the Comedy Nests. Anyway, US District Judge Josephine Stanton said the parties had fully discussed the matter and agreed to dismiss the case voluntarily. The comedian had turned the dispute into merchandise, selling T shirts bearing the words look, it’s a lawsuit, oh my god. Buddy Guy played a short set while everybody kind of got settled. Your host, Richard Kind, then welcomed Fred Ormison, who performed a comedy set that featured some musical numbers. Then David Letterman had the task of welcoming John Mulaney to the stage. Slash Films Ethan Anderton is quoted as saying, Mullaney blue the non existent roof off Wrigley Field. The hollered reporter says when it was all said and done, Mullaney seemed floored by the scene.

It used to feel bigger. The festival will feature more than one hundred shows from over two hundred comedians, with more performers to be announced. Well that’s good. For the first time, The New York Comedy Festival will welcome Varieties prestigious ten Comics to Watch program as part of the lineup. That presentation will take place November twelfth during the festival.

This year’s honorees will also be featured in Variety’s November fourth issue ahead of the event. Since launching that franchise in two thousand, Variety has identified many of comedian’s biggest future stars, including Wanda Sykes, Maga, comedian Aight Berghatzy star trek ruin Her, Pat Oswald, Fred Ormison, and zach Alifanakis.

James Corden, I don’t know how lately promoted that is or not, but anyway, Late Nighter says the numbers are hardly disastrous, especially in the demo.

Late Nighter adds the more revealing numbers of the outliers. After Hours posted its two strongest telecast to date on June twenty ninth and June thirtieth, when it immediately followed World Cup Games. The June twenty ninth episode did one point two three seven million total viewers and in the eighteen of forty nine four hundred and fifty two thousand. The next night one point two two four million viewers and four hundred and sixty nine thousand adults eighteen of forty nine. Pretty good.

Should have just had an onlyfan so people could pay to watch him do the kind of thing Louie likes to do in front of people, instead of subjecting female comment to it.

W Camal Bell on his sub stack took a break from taking shots at Mega Comedian Apraghatzy Bell wrote, so many people at Netflix had a sign off on ck getting invited to the festival and getting a new special. What were they all thinking? So many people have to work the show that he headlines, whether they want it or not. So many comedians will be at events and parties with Louis C.K.

Whether they want to be in the room with a known sex pest or not. So many people who make so much less money than him will have to pretend like they’re okay being in the same room as him. I could tell you from that description that means the show’s completely on foot focused and it’s we’re going to talk about, you know, stuff that never works.

Because this was Wired, they asked Pete Holmes about technology, which is kind of interesting. I like when you ask comedians about different things. What phone do you have, Pete Holmes? He said, it’s the iPhone Air from twenty twenty five. I love this phone so much.

The first thing I love about it is it didn’t do well. No one bought it, and then when I saw it, I couldn’t wait to get it. People often think it’s an Android. People don’t know what it is. I love all of this.

I love having a phone nobody else has. I mean, everybody has the same ugly spider eyeball phone. Everybody’s just getting the max the twenty eight hundred hour battery life. Get all that stuff out of here. The iPhone Air is the first iPhone I’ve seen it in a long time that looks like Steve Jobs out of say, everything else is just Apple playing catchup with Android.

Apple mimick. It’s something this saill Google do or whoever giving us a bunch of stuff we don’t need. And the flex is that it has a short battery life. You see my phone to go. Bete must not be on his phone very much.

There was a time when Apple was trying to make the eleven inch laptop. They were trying to make the future. They were trying to have things look clean, and now it’s just like, here’s everything. You look like you work at Silicon Valley. You look like you’re a programmer.

And here’s the punchline. That’s still too much. I still feel stressed out by my phone. I can’t even imagine what mine is. My phone’s upstairs.

I’ll tell you some other episode. I’m still looking at it more than I would like to, and it still gets its closet me. At some points it goes higher if I watch a movie or something. If I’ve been flying, I keep the widget for screen time on my home screen, which is good hack. Trying to lose weight, you have to weigh yourself, and if you’re trying to get your screen time down, put the widget on your phone.

Pete says, there’s no social media on my phone. It’s not natural to be in line at the airport security and finding out everything from every corner of the globe and having your own personal life just constantly. I found that if you step away, people get the message pretty quickly. You have to tell people. A lot of my texts start with sorry.

I’m not a big text person, and my phone is in black and white. It’s a nice little hack. Your phone is like a slot machine, so the more you can limit its color and sound, the less it can lull you in a lot more there. We’ll save that for summer weekends. As we go, there’s a lot more there.

I am scrolling down as I babble to you here. Jeff A. Kuriy has a pretty good special on Netflix. The La Times profiled him. They said, let’s talk about the weird level of fame you’ve attained right now.

I was like, special comes out July seventh, to give it a watch, and he’s like, all right, man, I only have YouTube. I was like, all right, you don’t have to say that. You don’t have to lie in the airport. I get a lot of people squinting, and then I’ll see them look at their phone and try to figure out how do I know this person? I think it was the only way for me to put out as much content as I could and still perform live. I was fortunate enough that I was already doing it, and so I just applied it to social media. No point in my career did I say I’m going to start talking to the audience. I’ve always done that. It makes me cringe when I see comedians complaining about crowd work. Why you’re worried about what you’re not doing.

Do your thing and then succeed. Don’t try and latch on whatever the success is and then complain didn’t work for you. Change gears aget a little more serious here after Netflix called what was the first thing you did to prepare for the special? Jeff said, So, that’s kind of hard because last year was a big year healthwise for my wife. She was diagnosed with cancer and everything, so it’s a lot of adjusting on the fly.

We found out about the special within today or so, finding out that she was misdiagnosed and her cancer was actually in a better place than we thought it was. So it was a great week for us. So it was very surreal. But then to switch to prepping for special because I’m not going to record a special talking about my life prior to that, it felt weird being able to talk about dating, talking about sex, life, things like that when I just got married. So a lot of special, I would say, at least half was written within a year of the taping on the road that year, going through what I was going through with my wife.

There’s jokes she’s made throughout the year that I would do on stage even after clearing it and saying, my wife said this and she has cancer, and here’s the joke. And I still get people like, oh, come on, don’t make that joke, dude. I’m like, I didn’t, she did. I’m just telling you what happened. We want to let people know that we make dark jokes about her life, about our cancer, about our situation, and not every joke, just like every couple, not every joke is meant to be for everybody.

Seth Myers was on the Hey Jonas podcast curious about his correspondent with former SNL cants mates and asked if there are any group chats and who’s in them and do any of them have a funny name. Seth Myers said, the group chat with the funniest name, Okay, this is Seth Myers, who has the twelve thirty show on NBC. I don’t think it’s that good. The President of the United States and I are a line that we need to make twelve thirty great again. Michael Jay wore a backwards baseball cap, sweatshirt, and sweatpants. He even indulged spectators who felt it necessary to comment.
