Caloroga Shark Media. The numbers are up man. Thanks everybody for listening. I’m Johnny Mack with your Daily Comedy News. And if you’re on YouTube, yeah there’s no video.
I know. I didn’t say there was. I’ll tell you. Usually this week is a dead week off Labor day, and I had been squirreling stuff away. I don’t need it.
Plenty of news. Everybody got right back to work. It’s like what I talked about on yesterday’s podcast, the annoying boss going, Hey, you know, Simmer’s over. Let’s good to work, guys. Okay, they got to work.
Vulture put out there what do they call it? It’s comedians you should know and will know list. I’m gonna deal with that on Sunday. There are twenty of them and it is quite long, so let me hold that until Sunday and I’ll do a deep dive on that. Then.
I did share the link in the Facebook group which is Daily Comedy News Podcast group if you can’t wait till Sunday.
Also a reminder, Saturday, I’ll have John marco Ciresi, who is one of the twe…
They keep dripping out information about Ellen’s new special, Ellen DeGeneres for Your Approval, premiere globally on September twenty fourth on Netflix. In a statement, Ellen said, to answer the questions everyone is asking me, Yes, I’m going to talk about it. Yes, this is my last special. Yes, Porsche really is that pretty in real life? Netflix tells us the final comedy special of her historic career.
Ellen gets personal and reveals what she’s been doing since being kicked out of show business, from the mundane world of raising chickens and parallel parking to the harsh realities of becoming a brand name celebrity. She goes deep into her stand up roots and brings laughs through life’s most real and absurd realities. I always found her stand up to be pretty good. You may recall. The Ellen Degenerous Show ended in twenty twenty two after nearly twenty years on the air.
Its finale came after a series of reports detailing allegations of racism, sexual misconduct, and intimidation on set. Hulu’s not messing around. They’ve now lined up otsgo at Katska. She’ll have a special on Hulu. No date yet, no title yet, but she will tape it at the el Capitan Theater in Hollywood on Saturday, November ninth.
This part of her full Grown tour, which kicks off on September thirteenth, includes twenty dates across the US. In Canada, I think she’s fantastic. You should go see her, Osco said. As a company that pionneered cartoons, it was only amount of time until they asked to work with me. I mean, look at me.
I rock a bowl cut and wear bright color as I am tuned down excited to bring good times and shenanigans to the people of the world with the Disney Hulu family. Peacock announced that Colin jos and Michael j Present New York After Dark will stream September twelfth at nine pm Eastern. It’ll feature a rotation of the pair’s favorite New York City Club comics, along with fresh faces and likely some familiar ones as well. So that’s interesting, right. That’s more of them hosting an evening than doing comedy themselves.
We’ll keep an eye on that. That Saturday night movie made its premiere Intellier Ride. People seem to really like it. Deadline wrote a top director once told me ninety percent of the success of movies is casting. If you get that right, you’re on your way.
If that’s the case, then Saturday Night director and co writer Jason Rightman nailed it and then some, with a killer ensemble of more than eighty speaking roles helping to bring the life to film. This is a masterful movie comedy firing on all cylinders. Wow, I’m excited to see this one. With no time to breathe, and it’s tight one hundred and three minute running time. I have to do some math here, so that’s sixty and forty three an hour forty three.
Johnny Mack thinks the perfect movie is about an hour thirty nine, but one hundred three minutes. That’s good. Brightman has mine comic gold in telling the incredible tale of how producer Lorn Michael’s navigated a nervous network, bruised egos, and an unpredictable cast. Blah blah blah. The clock ticked down to eleven thirty when it still wasn’t certain, believe it or not, that NBC would press the button for its first SNL or the Johnny Carson Tonight’s Show rerun they had ready to go in its place.
Some of the casts stand outs, according to Deadline, Corey Michael Smith’s spot on Chevy Chase Lamur and Morris’s Garrett Morris no relation, Matt Woods, John Belushi, Nick Brown’s rolls of both Jim Hansen and Andy Kaufman. Wonder why they did that. That’s an odd choice to have him played two different roles. Right and some others, including a chilling pitch perfect JK. Simmons as Milton Burrell.
Simmons nails Burl’s visit to the set had missed all the chaos and a brief but an unforgettable turn that has to be seen to be believed, and that includes a thing. There’s a fun fact about Milton Burrell. I like to keep this show clean, but it’s a big fact. People know this big fact about Milton Burle legendary. The big fact, Rolling Stone said.
Saturday Night turns the SNL origin story into a late night bad news bears. The Stone writes, part sloppy and overly Reverend tribute, part hilarious nineteen seventies gross out romp, and an all out assault to recreate the adrenaline Russia, producing that inaugural LESSNL. Jason Rightman’s Saturday Night seeks to bring folks back blah blah blah when Michaels keeps the ship together.
Meanwhile, Chevy Chase is already being courted as a breakout star with a bri…
Dan Ackroyd is flirting with every female in site and carrying on a not so secret relationship with a rosy Thray. Newman is neurotic, Geene Curtain is ironic and waspish, and Gilda Radner is adorable and deafy. It’s all admittedly funny and nerve jangling, with the comedians mugging and the pressure mounting, and the chances of Michael’s dream of a show made for the generation who grew up on TV by the generation who grew up on TV actually airing, slipping away minute by ticked off minute. The movie also heads to a foregone conclusion. Imagine an underdog story about a group of rag tag baseball players who you already know will eventually turn out to be the nineteen twenty seven New York Yankees.
Anyway, that sounds like it’s going to be fun, all right. Bert Krascher was walking around a right aid in Los Angeles. I guess he found the shelves pretty empty. He tweeted a video, and yes, the shelves are pretty empty. Here’s what Bert Krascher had to say.
I had to make several clips to get rid of some f bombs, but you’ll get the idea. This is Los Angeles. Everything is gone. Look at this is our deodorants. I think this place is going.
I mean this looks like looks like it’s been looted. And I guess thieves just come in and take whatever is expensive and just walk out with it. This is crazy. This is unrecognizable. When it moves to Los Angeles, you come and ride it to spend the afternoon looking around.
This is so fad. This is Los Angeles. On gossip Corner. Adam Sandler, his wife and daughter, died at Goldberg’s world famous Deli in Milburn. I saw this story in one of the local papers, and I’m like, world famous.
It’s not even the most famous deli in Milburn. I mean, I’m sure the locals somebody’s gonna argue this, but I always hear about the Milburn Deli, which is not Goldberg’s world famous deli. Anyway, Sandler was at Goldberg’s. According to owner Chris, they came in and walked up to my wife, and she gasped in surprise and let out a wow. She thought she was keeping her surprise on the inside, but she was not.
Who’d be able to They were so nice to everyone. As soon as they walked in, the entire deli just lit up in joy. Everyone was smiling and just so happy to have such a fun family joining us for a meal. Sandler was happy to take selfies with guests and staff. Adam’s been in my greater local neighborhood.
He hasn’t been like next door, but he’s been pretty close to where I live. Filming Happy Gilmore two. Chris the owner has a message for Adam Sandler. It is Adam, if you’re reading this, all the best and making the world laugh and smile once again on your latest endeavor, Happy Gilmore too. All Right, I finally ain’t got around to watching Adam Sandler’s comedy special.
I know I’m a week late on this, but you know we talk about Sailor enough here. You’re probably like Johnny Mac, did you like it? Did you hate it? You hate it? You hate everything?
Right, Johnny Mack. Well, I’ll tell you what I liked it. Let me break it apart. The safty stuff at the beginning where they kind of shot it like a movie and Adam pulls up in a car and we follow Adam walking to the club and people ask him to sign stuff. I really like that.
I thought it was interesting. I kind of hate the way most comedy specials open and wish it would just be like Ladies and Gentlemen, Joe Comedian and the comedian comes out. But you know, a lot of these specials have to have these forced opens. I kind of liked that this one was stylized that said during the set proper the fake stuff like the random dog or Adam pretending that the venue isn’t good even though it’s a fake venue, you know, and pretending there’s technical problems and all that. It just didn’t work work for me.
Maybe if I didn’t know it was fake, I would have been like, oh, that’s interesting that they left that in, But it just it didn’t work at all for me. I watched it in two chunks Friday night. I was kind of tired, had a really busy week last week, and I kind of liked the low keyness of it. Adam was kind of chill, and I was into it. My wife came by with the laundry basket, because, as I’ve told you, one hundred percent of the time, if I’m watching a comedy special, she will come by about thirty seven minutes in, and sure enough she did, and she was like, is that Adam Sandler?
Yeah, I thought, you don’t like Adam Sandler, and I said I don’t, but I have a comedy podcast that said I liked it.
And then I was like, how much more of this?
And there was still like another forty minutes. So I went on to do something else. But Saturday night I went back in and watched more of it. The second half I kind of got bored. There was more of the Sailor songs in there, and his songs are just really dumb, and I know they’re supposed to be dumb, but they’re the same thing over and over.
He just sings like four line a normal song and then says something ridiculous at the end, gets the laugh line, and the song falls apart. They’re not even like complete thoughts. It’s just like roses are red, violes or blue. Let me say something absurd so you laugh now, And it’s that same formula over and over. Rob Schneider came out as Elvis and I had to fast forward through that.
I couldn’t even do it.
And then some people have said the song at the end is very poignant.
To Adam, sing’s like a ten minute song about other comedies in the history of comedy and famous comedians, and he’s got a clip show behind him, and it’s designed to make you clap and designed to make you feel good. And it just felt really forced to me. John, it doesn’t sound like you like the special. I did like the Special. It’s got a lot of problems.
I’m going to add it to the list of best of the year. It’ll probably be the last thing on the list, however long it gets, but it makes it. I appreciate when someone tries to do something like what came to mind is Kevin James last special not trying to do anything that was just dumb. Sandler here is trying to do something. I’m not sure it worked, but I appreciate it, if that makes any sense.
So it’s not in the top tier at all. It’s in my second tier on a rather long list now, and it’ll probably be the last. But yeah, I liked it, Okay, Adam Sandler, I trash you a lot. I feel fair here, and if we look back now, since Hub Halloween, you’ve done Uncut Gems and Hustle, the Basketball Movie, and the Space One, and you’ve had two specials, one of which I liked. Maybe I’m coming around on Adam Sandler or maybe I don’t know.
I also watched Greg Fitzsimmons, a special on YouTube that is going to make the list as well. It’ll be in the second tier, but at the top of the second tier. But what I found interesting about it is it’s eighty percent really funny, but also twenty percent really hack It’s a weird mix. When he’s on, he’s on he definitely reminds me of Portman’s Bill Burr, and then he’ll do some hacky material and I’m like, really, dude, that’s like awful. Which one that I like better?
Fitzimmons is better than Sandler, for sure. I have not watched Philang yet. That was my plan for Tuesday nights, so I’m sure my wife is planning on doing laundry. About thirty seven minutes after I hit play on Phil Wang, shortle saw it spoilers coming up here. They gave it spoilers.
Are you gone okay three and a half stars out of five. Phil Wang opens with the main difference between white people and Chinese people. Straight out of the gate, doesn’t even say hello, but chortle tells us don’t expect any hack material or edgy race based content from this mild mannered comedian. Later, he tackles the N word in rap lyrics and the concerns most non black people have in singing along. His solution takes potential offense and makes it cozy, typical of a comedian so physically soft, he confesses to injuring himself on bread, complains about having to do everything himself when flying seem lightweight, but end with a more distinctive payoff, calmly dismissing a task that he doesn’t want to take on.
It’s the closest the composed comic ever gets to snapping Phil Wang Wang in their baby Netflix. That is your comedy news for today. If you enjoy the program, tell a friend about it.
