The Shark Deck. I’m Jenny Mack with your Daily Comedy News. I thought I was done with the Chris Rock special, just wanted him move on, But boy, you know I love a good fight. A source told et online Will Smith is embarrassed and hurt by what Chris said about him and his family and the Netflix special. Will didn’t watch it, but he had people tell him what Chris said.

It’s everywhere when you look online and on social media. Will and Jada have seen comments about it. The source added, We’ll apologize to Chris and would like for Chris to let it go. Will has worked on himself and he’s banned by the oscars for ten years. He feels like that’s enough and wants Chris to move on so that he and everybody else can too.

The source also told eats he that Will Smith is upset that Netflix gave Rock this platform to express his views. Will’s also upset that Netflix was part of this and thinks Chris insulting Jada again is below the belt. He’s upset that Netflix gave Chris this platform to share these messages and thinks it’s distasteful.

Meanwhile, a different source on the Chris Rock side said, Rock said everythi…

It was funny, self deprecating and thought provoking. Now Chris is ready to move on. Deal hugely posted a clip of Chris Rock Special. Under that clip, Leslie Jones left a scathing response to one commenter, Right, so we’re following here, there’s a special deal. Hugley posts a clip.

Leslie Jones reacts to somebody commenting about the clip. The comment from the non famous person was, you gotta let stuff go at some point in your life. This is how young brothers get killed in the streets talking about something that happened a year ago, setting a terrible example. Leslie Jones chimed in and said, y’all forgot. He got slapped in front of the world.

YO, his kids, his mom up, hears everyone. I know how you all mother effers would handle that. And he’s a comedian. This is his way of expressing it. If he’s sang, he would write a song because it’s a painful thing that happened.

Y’all act like you would be righteous. You were hypocrites. Shut the f up and go sit down. The special caught the attention of hashtag Oscar’s so White creator, April rereen. April said, lots of folks were waiting to see if Chris would say Jade’s name during Chris Rock Live.

Hey didn’t, but he did call her a bit, and that seems just as bad, if not worse, to me. He knew what he was doing. It wasn’t weird but intentional. Chris could have picked and sold out any city in America he wanted to be in Jade’s hometown. Deal.

Hughley called Rock’s performance brilliantly executed and said, if you love comedy, if you’re student of the art, if you’re one of the few remaining people that allow for creative expression, then you walked away from this with the same sentiment. Side note, this happened to him to Chris, and the entire world got to weigh in and talk trash and make jokes and should would have could have the whole damn thing to death. Other comedians of bits about it. It was an opener for most of us. The one person he never heard from about it was Chris.

So now that he decides to address it on his time, people have the audacity to say he’s bitter, Why is he’s still talking about it? Let it go? We’re the best one we’ve moved on, so you’ve got to speak on it, but he can’t. Y’all are straight FF and trip. Congratulations Chris Rock.

You did the damn thing. I’m gonna jump in here, don’t I disagree, mister Hugley. I feel like the entire world was like, Chris, we want to hear from you on this. That was one of my challenges with the special that he made us wait sixty one minutes. We wanted to hear from Chris on this.

I’ve got the download numbers. Nobody was saying move on, so I don’t know where that is coming from. Everybody wanted to hear from Chris Rock. Was the special a master class in comedy? I don’t think so.

As I’ve said several times this week and my humble, unpopular opinion, I think the special was missequenced and Will Smiths stuff should have been about the twenty minute mark, and the Megan Markel stuff was stronger. But Chris Rock is a goat and I’m an idiot in abasement on the podcast what do I Know? Whoopy Goldberg is a famous comedian. She said Chris Rock’s ability to say what he sees is great, and you know what, this situation is never going to find a really good way to calm down. It’s just not there’s no justification for what happened.

What bees on the board of governors for the academy. So she’s one of the people that suspended him for ten years, right. Her theory on all this was I think it was a lot of other stuff probably built up. I think it one of those moments where it was just like, just stop, I get it. Not everybody asked the way would like them too.

Under pressure, some people just snap and he snapped quick stop. At Gossip Corner beat david Send likely not to face any charges after crashing into a home in Beverly Hills over the weekend. This from KABC. The report Pete Davidson was reportedly with his girlfriend. I like how they to say with his girlfriend, as if like you know, oh, we all know who his girlfriend is.

He has many girlfriends, As if you pay attention to Gossip Corner, this girlfriend doesn’t seem to be famous. The KABC article did not name checker. Davidson was poorly with his girlfriend and allegedly behind the wheel of a Mercedes when he lost control. The vehicle ran over a fire hydrant and crashed into the side of a house. Shouldn’t this be a rigor story?

Davidson was not arrested, according to Beverly Hills Police, and faces no charges as of right now. The important thing is it sounds like nobody was hurt. Quick note on Saturday Night Live. I apologize, Dear Travis Kelsey. I apologize.

I thought it was insane that you were going to host Saturday Night Live. I was wrong. You were really good, you were really charismatic. And I was texting my cousin He’s already John seen a good. Cousin wrote back and said cast him in Fast and Furies twelve.

I agree, Travis Kelsey has a tremendous career ahead of him, mister Kelsey, I humbly apologize. During the Chris Rock pregame show, Netflix teased the Netflix as a Joke Comedy special returning. What I missed at the moment was they didn’t announce one for this summer. They announced it for twenty twenty four. Netflix Is a Joke will officially return to La May second to May fourteen, twenty twenty four.

Is There a Netflix as a Joke Festival this summer, No Schorto reviewed Just for Laughs London, and this first part really spoke to me. They wrote, it’s a tough job launching a comedy festival in London given the city as hundreds of gigs a week anyway, whereas Just for Laughs absolutely dominates downtown Montreal for a couple of weeks in July, you could easily be in London and be entirely unaware it was on. That’s how I feel about the New York City Comedy Festival. It just comes and goes. But New York, there’s so much going on here that you don’t even notice the festival unless you’re part of the festival.

So it sounds like the same thing happened in London, Chordo continues. In fact, you could even be at the O two Complex and Greenwich where it all happened and be aware. Giant ads are just as likely to be promoting Mickey flannagannder Peter Kay’s forthcoming gigs, which were not part of the festival. Floor level tickets were in ninety pounds, although one fan tweeted that he got his for the price of coffee and a cake, suggesting not everyone paid full price. They reviewed a whole bunch of the shows, so that’s on chortle if you want to read that.

One show they liked, in particular Craig Robinson. He did a late night music and comedy mash up. But the reviewer said, I had a full road to myself and it was only wrote g shamed. So many missed a delightful party. Wow that sounds rough.

Sunday Night, Two New Faces of Comedy showcases, one of the hottest tickets and most prestigious gigs of the Montreal event in London was built as a place to see the future stars of the comedy circuit, although it’s definition of new Faces stretched to Shazia Mirza, now in her twenty third year as a stand up yikes. But the reviewer wrote, in London, I was told no, in certain terms, was just an audition, a new act event that should not be reviewed, and I should never have been given a ticket for not that the people who paid twelve fifty first seat had any indication this was anything but a normal game. So under sufferance, I can give you no review, but I will say the standouts where Josh Clank, with his unfailing commitment to silly unredictable comedy and Alison Spittle with her gloriously graphic but cheerfully delivered description of getting a contraceptive coil fitted perfect material for two PM on a Sunday, and the reviewer did hit the wrestling that was the show. I was obsessed with Silts dive in here a bald, brash and stupid spectacle guarantee the close the festival in an impressive style that not all the preceding four days lived up to. The wrestling offers a freeing sense that anything goes, both from the loose improval of the night to the ridiculously overblown characatures battling in good and evil.

Where else could you hear the phrase smash her disabled head in and have it not be a hate crime? Wow? Then came the first unscheduled match with a surprize guest, Gregg the Taskmaster. Davies took on reigning champ a Rosy Daddy Jones. Jones cheated her way to retaining her belt, only to retire hurt from the climactic eightweight battle Royale.

It was to decide the twenty twenty three title. In the main event, Alex the Raging Horn entered on a longboat the ringfluencer Abby Clark with her social media team Phil Phil Wang Wang in the revealing Bruce Lee jumpsuit. He war on Taskmaster and Pro’s Karen Noir, Las Si Clona and arch Heel, The Prince of Mumbai Rishi Ghosh Plust the comedy highlight of about Glenn Morgue as a cryogenically frozen nineteen seventies Tory MP defrosted by his manager, the very right wing comedian Joe Lysatz, chaos ensued, Clark performed a daring, high stakes die through the ropes. Wang was slammed from the ropes into a ringside table and stretchered away and Lycett revealed himself not to be a right wing comedian at all and turned against his capitalist charge. That sounds like a great time.

Despite crashing out so dramatically, Wang made a Lazarus like comeback against the advice of medic Mark Silcox, and ultimately he took the title while Phil Wang won the wrestling. That’s awesome. I would love to see one of those shows. That sounds like so much fun, The Guardian added, were we to judge by eight cast and Kumar’s running joke about low ticket sales for Saturday’s flagship event, The Q and A with Ryan Reynolds. The twenty twenty three edition has been only a qualified success m too bad.

Meanwhile, Moontower added even more comedians Moontower in Austin April twelfth. Through the twenty third they have added Howie Mandel makes sense. He’s like the big boss at Just for Laughs, Andrew Dismukes, Andrea Ginn, Kate Willett, Brendan Sagalow, Natalie Palamedes, Elizabeth Spears, and dream Horse. I feel like what I do here. You can go to buy meacoffee dot com slash Daily Comedy News.

I think you might have to get me a hot coffee today. I’m starting to feel like I’m getting a cold, and hopefully it’s just a cold. Yikes, mimycoffee dot com, slash Daily Comedy News. Donald Glover was at the twenty twenty three Writers Guild Awards in New York City Sunday night. He got in a joke about Chevy Chase.

Atlanta Executive producer Phil Simms was there to receive an honorary award. The award is named after former SNL writer Herb Sergeant, who came up with the chevy Chase hosted Weekend Update. Glover said chevy Chase once called Herb one of the funniest writers working in televis chevy Chase once called me, you know what this is about. Paul Marlon Wayne spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his relationship with Will Smith. Marlan said he hit Will Smith up and said, congrats on your oscar, But brother, I want you to go to therapy seven hours of therapy on Monday, because you’ve got some unpacking to do.

That’s exactly what I said. I don’t think you should bury him and cancel him and all that. I think he’s dealing with it enough on his own time. But yeah, the very thing he’s trying to race. Now you’re gonna have to deal with it for the rest of your life.

You just made it bigger. Now it’s about how you process this to do whatever you need for healing personally. Same with Chris. One day they’ll get together and hopefully resolve this because we can laugh at it now, we can put it behind us at some point. But for me, we got to look at our heroes and be like, hey, let’s stop the cancel culture for a second.

How about we get this brother some help. Are you in therapy because we don’t take care of our mental health the way we need to, especially Black people, we don’t do that. I go to therapy two times a week. This is for my own sanity because I deal with it a lot. We deal with a lot.

We have to act like we’re not hurting. My mama died, I’m still dealing with the trauma that and that was three years ago. We near these idols in people’s eyes. We don’t have any license to fail. And he saw that man fail.

It can happen at any and every one of us under these pressures. He had the worst moment on the best day of his life. He also talked about the current state of comedy, cancel culture and whatnot. He said, everybody’s got an opinion on it. I don’t like where society’s going.

But I will say, just like Chappelle said, as a comedian, you have to draw a line and be unapologetic. I’m sorry you’re hurting, but I’m not sorry. I told that joke because it’s your opinion, so we could tell the same jokes. But my opinion through my experience maybe different than a different community. Mine comes from a more sensitive place depending on the topic than somebody not aware or not in that community, or that topic isn’t of interest.

They’re gonna be a lot more callous with their jokes. But it’s comedy. That’s what our job is now. Our job is to tell jokes period. Some we’re gonna win, some we’re gonna lose.

We just watched it globally. For comedian they tell jokes. What we do for a living. You can’t be mad at that. It’s kind of like if Will’s in an action movie and he’s finding some people in the Middle East and Middle Eastern people get mad at him.

What do you have that guy like that? It’s a movie. It’s what I’m supposed to do. He was the bad guy. As comedians, all we’re trying to do is make light of whatever we see in front of us, and sometimes you crack the wrong joke.

And good news if you’re in Ukraine, Comedy Central has been added to a list of TV channels distributed by the Ukrainian media group one plus one. The Shark Deck. It’s Women’s History Month. I’m Johnny Mac with your Daily Comedy News. Jimmy Fallon said, yeah, remember behind every great woman is a man, loudly repeating her ideas. Kimmel went with Women’s History Months started as Women’s History Week back in nineteen eighty two, and then somebody thought, you know, hey, women should probably get more time than sharks.

On the Discovery Channel, Jay Leno was on Kelly Clarkson. You may recall Jay had a couple accidents back to back. How’s Leno looking well? He joked, for the second time in my career, I am the new face of comedy. Jim Gaffigan was on the Today Show.

He’s out promoting that movie, and he said, now that he’said dad, he has flashbacks of his adolescent ears and like most teens, remembers thinking his parents were clueless. Jim said, you view your parents, these people that don’t know what they’re doing. They have nothing to offer their burden in my life, he feels the pandemic left its mark not only on Jim’s kids, but children in general, saying it was really really devastating, particularly for teens. Jim said, there’s a lot of problems that they deal with that other generations didn’t necessarily have to deal with. It’s so much easier to exist now with no empathy virtually, so people would say nasty things and they don’t see the reflection on someone’s face or how they’re processing it.

Jim’s going to go back out on the road with his current tour, Dark Pale. It’s his tenth hour, and he said, so there’s the creating and rewriting and filling in the holes of developing the material. You have to travel to do comedy. If I do too much, then I’m missing out on other things. But when I do stand up in the city, I could have dinner with my kids, which I think is a luxury from here.

The headline Vegan comedian Tiknazarosh headline Comedy for the Animals, March twelve. This sounds cool. I love comedy show featuring all vegan comics. Comedy for the Animals co creator Scott Sevens told Vege out your home for comedy news. Comedy for the Animals exist to be a community building an animal rights activism supporting brand.

To that end, we donate a portion of each show’s profits to a different charity. We don’t select the charities ourselves. That choice is given exclusively to the headliner of each show. Our headliners do the show because they love the animals, believe in supporting animal rights activists, and have a charity they care about that they select for that show. The first comedy for the Animals Show took place in November.

Plant based comedians Mike Kaplan, Who’s fantastic, April water Shide and ash t I’m not familiar with them performed routines. This time they have tig Nazaro, and the article reminds us that tig Nataro was listened as one of the fifty best stand up comics of all time by Rolling Stone. I haven’t dove in on that list in a while. I might have to go back and revisit that. I’m pretty sure during the pandemic, when you know, there was less stuff to talk about because nobody who’s doing anything.

I covered that, but I might have to go in and take a second look at that. It’s Tigg in the top fifty. Yeah, I don’t know if she’s got to be like forty six, forty seven? Should we look? Let’s look hold on, all right?

This is from twenty seventeen. I think I’ll do another weekend episode soon recommenting on this, but let’s take a look real quick. Fifty one to Sykes forty nine, is Zis, Yeah, you want to revisit that? Five years later? Forty eight, Margaret Show Sorry six years later forty seven, Elane Boozler forty six, Reggie Watts come on, no, No, come on forty five, Freddie Prinz forty four, Russell Peters forty three, Amy Schumer forty two, Phillis Diller forty one, Bernie mac cheeze.

Where do they have tig? I’m not gonna read the whole list because I’ll spoil the thing. I’m scrolling down here. Where do you guys have tig? Are you?

This is insane? Some of the names I’ve scrolled past already. Thirty five, Yeah, Patton Oswalt’s thirty four and curious. All right, I’m now inspired. That’s going to be some weekend filler coming up.

I haven’t needed filler in like, seriously, over a year. I think last January was the time that I blatantly just did filler. There’s been a lot to talk about. I don’t know if you’ve heard Will Smith slapped Chris Rock. That kind of set off a year of comedy between him and Dave’s Chappelle.

There’s always something to talk about. Comedy for the Animals present, Stignet Sorrow. Sunday Mart’s twelfth, two PM at Dynasty Typewriter in La Bert Kreisher was on Pardon My Teak and they asked him do you still own Hitler’s Tea cup? Do you know about this? Bert Kreisher and Sam Segura keep one upping each other with birthday gifts.

Bert tells the story, so the last time around, Sigura was trying to find something more expensive than a Reese car. Sigoura calls Kreisher and says, hey, man, can we rethink this birthday thing? I don’t know what to get you, and I’m like, it’s stressing me out. He’s like, send me a wish list. So he sent a wish list and it was like a ranch house.

Price point had to be in six figures.

And then I was getting anxiety about his birthday and I was like, this is rid…

So I said, why don’t we just make it fun? The price doesn’t matter, just make it fun. Make it something that’ll make us laugh and make it good for the podcast. And he was like great.

And then he said to me, I got your present.

I think you’d be so excited. I know you’re in a history. Graisher says, everyone knows I’m really in a Winston Churchill like he’s my guy. I celebrate Winston Churchill’s Day every January twenty fourth or twenty fifth, and I live like he did for one day. I wake up with a soft Scotch, a cigar, eggs, toast, coffee, orange juice, jam, fruit, bacon, the whole thing in bed.

I stay in bed for about three hours, drinking and smoking and reading a paper, taking meetings. I had my whole team in there this year. Three hours. Then I take a bath, I have some champagne. I drink all day my party, and I end the night with another scar some brandy.

So Sagora brings out a cup. He says, I got you this, and I think, oh, he got me Winston Churchill’s tea. I was like, this guy knows me so much, he’s better than my wife. And I grab it and he says there’s a ninety nine percent chance that Hitler had drank from that cup. Happy birthday, buddy, and I’m like what and he goes, yeah, that’s Hitler’s tea cup.

I can’t stop laughing. I’m like, this is the worst gift ever. And he’s like, but I know you like history. So like two weeks later we’ve released the podcast. It’s after my birthday.

My sister calls me and says, hey, can you drive a skateboard over at my house? I go yeah, So I get on my electric bike with a skateboard. I ride by a synagogue down the street from my house. As I do it, my bike dies. My electric bike dies.

I don’t know if you ever tried to peddle an electric bike. They go really slow. So now I’m peddling an electric bike past the synagogue. I see a Jewish family, hacetic Jewish orthodoxygen was walking towards me. They get out of the bike lane into like where the cars are parked, and the dad says, have a great day, man.

I say you too, and he goes, I love your stuff and he goes, what, Bert, I love your stuff? Man, You make me laugh every day. So now we’re going slow enough where we can have this conversation. I get passed him and he goes, hey, man, Hitler’s teacup killed me, and I’m like, that did not just happen. So I have a whole bunch of podcasts, as you know, I’m the writer on Palace Intrigue.

Then that’s the podcast about the British royal family where we kind of make fun of Megan Markle. Now did we set out to just make fun of Megan Markle? We did not. I just wanted to do something that was like The Crown in real time, and then Meg’s it happened. And I do get the download numbers.

And I’m telling you, if I put in the episode title Kate Middleton blah blah blah, I get fewer downloads than if I write Harry and Megan insert anything here, Harry and Megan. They move the numbers, just like on this podcast very openly, maybe twice a week talk about Joe Rogan just to get more downloads. So that’s one of them five good news stories you’ve heard the promos. I’ve been playing that in the post role on this podcast a lot. So that’s twice a week where I talk about five good news stories.

Then I have this casual travel podcast that what I do is I go places sometimes and I bring the portable recorder. I got it sitting here right on the table next to my laptop and a record. Just you know what I’m doing. Not claiming to be Anthony Bourdaine, not claiming to be Rick Steves. I’m a dude in a car with a portable recorder and a go places.

So the new season starts today, Season three of Travel Is Back. Is the name of the podcast, Travel Is Back, and it’s my Key West road trip about it. A month ago, three weeks ago, I went down to Key West with my daughter for the weekend. So we drove from Miami to Key West, hung out and Key West at the beaches, did the bars two nights, went to this great Cuban place. Then on the way back we hit the Everglades and I got too close to an alligator and I got yelled at by the nice volunteer lady there.

So check out Travel is Back wherever you get your shows A true story. As soon as I finished recording yesterday’s podcast with the whole Ryan Hamilton’s thing at the top there, the next thing is I recorded the Weekly Comedy Thing. The Weekly Comedy Thing is a show I host for the Live one app. The app is free, the show is free. What the Weekly Comedy Thing is, it’s the forerunner of this podcast.

So there. I’m more of a DJ type, so I can talk for about thirty seconds to a minute and then I throw it to a bit. So that big Jim Gaffigan story that I just did, I would do the twenty second version of that and then play a Jim Gaffigan bit. So that’s the Weekly Comedy Thing on Live one, if you want to check that out. I recorded this podcast and then I went to record the Weekly Comedy Thing and I was introducing true story, not making it up, not doing a bit.

I was introducing Canadian comedian Ryan Bellville, and as I did it, I misspoke and called him Ryan Hamilton. Now luckily I caught it, and I was like, huh, maybe that’s what’s in my brain, although I don’t think so, because I know who Ryan Bellville is. I mean, I know who Ryan Hamilton is. I just don’t know where he’s from. He’s from what Idaho?

Anyway, I went on chat GPTC and I asked the AI, Hey, what’s the difference between Ryan Hamilton and Ryan Bellville? And the chatbot tells me Ryan Hamilton and Ryan Bellville are both comedians, but they have different backgrounds and comedic styles. Ryan Hamilton is an American comedian from Idaho. Thank you, Chatbot. He’s known for his clean, observational humor that focuses on everyday life experiences.

His comedy is often compared to that of Jerry Seinfeld. See I said that yesterday. Ryan Bellville, who is not Ryan Hamilton, is not from Idaho. Ryan Bellville is a Canadian comedian from Ontario. He is known for his irreverent, high energy comedy that often incorporates physical humor and impressions.

Bellville is fantastic. I saw him in Toronto. Anytime i’d talk to y’all about comedy festivals, you hear me say, go see the locals, Go see the smaller shows. The example I often use is, if you want to see Chris Rock, wait long enough, he’ll show up on Netflix, sometimes even live. So if you go all the way to JFL Toronto, you don’t need to see Chris Rock in Toronto.

You can see Chris Rocks some other way. Go see the low people. So one night I saw Ryan Belleville and he was awesome. Chat GPT reminds me. In summary, While both Ryan Hamilton and Ryan Bellville are comedians, they have different comedic styles and come from different backgrounds.

Hamilton is known for clean, observational humor, while Belleville’s comedy is more irreverent and physical. Ryan Hamilton is of course from Idaho, Andrew Santino and Bobby Lee. They’re going on tour thirty two cities from April until June. It kicks off April twelfth in Oklahoma City. Other cities include Detroit, Atlanta, Seattle, and their final gig will be June twenty fifteen.

Mun Hall Where is Munhall? So? I tied Munhall into Google? What’s coming up? Is Munhall as a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

It appears to be a suburb of Pittsburgh, with a population of ten eight hundred and twenty seven. The Guardian caught up with Miranda Hart. Can you recall a gig so bad it’s now funny? She said, I remember doing a sketch show that I found funny at the time. There were about fifteen people at a three hundred seater and stony silence the entire way through.

I know whether to just stop. I had to go in the audience for a sketch and sit on a man’s lap flirtatiously, and when I did, he just said no thanks and besting on as somebody else. Questions Answered in This Episode

What did critics say about Chris Rock’s ‘Selective Outrage’ special?

Reviews were mixed to negative. The New York Times praised the first half and Megan Markle material but noted Rock seemed angrier and sloppier than usual. USA Today called it crotchety and boring, while Indie Wire criticized it as ‘an hour of buzzwords’ designed primarily for attention and controversy rather than solid comedy.

How much of the Chris Rock special was actually about the Will Smith Oscar slap?

According to Hollywood Reporter’s review, after waiting 61 minutes into the special for the Will Smith material, Rock’s actual joke about it was relatively brief and was one he’d been workshopping for months on the road.

What were the weakest parts of Chris Rock’s special according to Johnny Mac?

Johnny Mac said the second half of the special lagged and felt weak, particularly calling out the transgender jokes and abortion material as having poor punchlines compared to the stronger Megan Markle material in the first half.

Did critics think Chris Rock’s material was original?

No. USA Today noted the special felt outdated with jokes about topics from five years prior, and critics pointed out the personal dating material was too similar to his 2018 special Tambourine, suggesting self-plagiarism.

Why did Johnny Mac say most articles about the special seemed pre-written?

Johnny Mac observed that roughly 95% of review headlines followed a formula similar to how newspaper obituaries are pre-written, with the basic structure about ‘Chris Rock breaks silence on Oscar slap’ already prepared and just filled in with specific details.

The Shark Deck. I’m Johnny Max. I’m quick house cleaning here. If you’re just downloading the feed on Monday, this is a bonus episode where I will react to the Chris Rock reactions. I’ll lower in the feed.

You’ll find the normal Monday episode, which has no Chris Rock stuff. Before that, you’ll find my rapid reaction that I recorded Saturday night right after watching Chris Rock, and then you’ll also find the normal Sunday episodes. So you might have four episodes in your feed this morning, depending on how often you check in.

Also while doing house cleaning.

If I sound a little different, I’m using my brand new portable setup that I brought with me. I’m recording this on Sunday afternoon, around four pm while sitting in a car at the soccer tournament. And I’ve been thinking a lot about the Chris Rock Special and I’m going to stick to my guns here that the first half was pretty good. The strongest part of the special was the Megan Markel stuff, and the second half really lagged and the closer was okay. I’m taking some heat from people’s specific on YouTube who did not enjoy my review, but as we go through here, and see some other reviews, I might not be that crazy.

Let’s start with Jason Zinoman. He writes for The New York Times, and I have a lot of respect for Jason, who wrote at fifty eight. Chris Rock is one of our greatest stand ups, A perfectionist whose material, once it appeared in a special, always displayed a meticulous sense of control. He lost it here, purposely flashing anger as he insulted Will Smith, offering a theory of the case of what really happened at Academy Awards after he made a joke about Jada Pinket Smith’s hair, and in what will be the most controversial part of the set, laid much of the blame on her. A commanding theater performer who sets up bits as well as anyone, Chris Rock picked up momentum midway through Yeah, I felt about ten minutes, and he found his groove, while always hinting at Smith material to come, with a reoccurring refrain of poking fun at Snoop Dogg and Jay Z before making clear it’s just for fun.

His recurring joke, last thing I need is another mad rapper. Another running theme is his contempt for victimhood His jokes about Megan Markel are very funny, mocking her surprise that the Royal family is racist them its originators, the sugar Hill Gang of Racism. There’s a comic nastiness to Rock’s insults, some of which is studied, but other times appeared to be the product of his own bottled up anger. In this special, Chris Rock seemed more raw than usual, sloppier, cursing more often and less precisely. This was a side of him he hadn’t seen before.

The way his fury became directed at Pinkett Smith makes you wonder if this was also kind of a displacement. USA Today was not as kind their headline. Perhaps Chris Rock should have titled his new Netflix special Get off My Lawn. Wow. They wrote, that’s the tone Rock presented in Selective Outrage.

He’s crotchety, he’s mean, he’s predictable and boring. Like many of the biggest comedians of Generation X, Rock started sounding like the guy at the end of the box, screaming about kids these days in Outrage, a flimsy, flaccid special that gained nothing from being live other than providing publicity for Netflix. The problem is not that Rock made jokes about young people, are transgender people are women or duchess Megan, it’s that he made bad jokes about them. He doesn’t have to like the people he talks about. Heck, he doesn’t have to like anyone.

But if he’s going to spend five minutes on a bit about what might happen if one of his parents was transgender, the punchline has to be better then. Wouldn’t that be insane? Yeah? I thought that whole segment was weak and just a weird thing to even go there. So we’re talking about another Netflix special making transgender jokes?

What is going on at Netflix USA? Titty continues. If he’s going to joke about abortion and killing babies, the punchline has to be better than children are annoying. If he’s going to joke about Jada Pinkett Smith and excessively address the Oscar slap, the punchline has to be better than calling her a gendered slur over and over again. His material was oddly outdated from start to finish, with jokes that felt five years old, covering such targets as black China, the Kardashians, and the time when people used to post sushi pictures on Instagram.

Even personal material about dating in his fifties after a divorce is so similar to his twenty eighteen special Tambourine that it feels like a bit of self plagiarism. Yikes. The Hollywood Border wrote, Netflix attempted to build a live stunt out of Rock doing stand up material he’s been doing on the road for ten months, and the only thing that would tell you the special is live, after making viewers wait sixty one minutes for the inevitable Will Smith material, was Rock effing up the joke, a joke he’s probably made around the country dozens of times. They add, it’s not judgment, by the way, to note that a comedy special is the film version of an off, repeated, highly refined stand up set. If there’s ever a comic who did an entirely improvised film special, I don’t know who it was.

But then again, there’s very rarely been a comic whose workshopped reactions to a very public event. We’re getting print today newspapers in every city he went to. Now this next section here amen on what they wrote. They wrote, Chris Rock breaks his silence on Oscar slap is a headline I’m sure you’re going to see in every website in the known universe. Yeah.

When I first started going through the reviews early on Sunday morning, I commented on Twitter that it looked like ninety five percent of the articles had been pre written, as if you just wrote the oh, Chris Rock talked about Will Smith and then filled in the particulars, almost how like obituaries in the newspaper are handled. In case you’re not hip to that, almost every celebrity’s obituary has already been written, except for the date of death and cause of death. The reporter rights the prior work shopping is how I already knew going into the special that Rock was going to make the joke about their respective differences in stature, noting that even in animation, Smith was a shark and Rock was a zebra. This is a joke he made repeatedly and nobody cares that. In Shark Tale, Smith voices a tiny little fish who hangs out with the shark.

Voice by Jack Black. Indie Wire’s headline, Chris Rock’s Selective Outrage is an hour of buzzwords seven minutes on Will Smith and nothing special ouch. They write, even though Rock threw the microphone of the ground before striding off stage. His set wasn’t really about outrage. It was about attention.

Chris Rock, who’s been a stand up, film and TV star for longer than many of us have been alive, knows all about attention. He’s gotten and when he needs it, and endured it when it’s the last thing he wants. He’s seen stand up comedy evolve from an art form that could be constrained by practicing in bars and clubs before recording your special or playing a thousand people to something that could be recorded at random and shared with the world. And the blink of an eye. He knows how to attract attention.

He’d use it to his advantage, and the finest craft scene in Selective Outrage stems from his acknowledgment and execution of that tool. In short, he spewed broadly topical keywords for an hour, betting that Elon Musk, Steph Curry, one of the Kardashians, one of the Royals, and of course Jada Pinkett Smith would respond and extend his special’s cultural life cycle. Their tweets will be retweeted, headlines will be written about those tweets, Maybe more tweets written about those headlines, and it all leads back to selective outrage. Maybe an organization will let’s do a statement condemning his blustery noting comments about abortion, transgender people of the war in Ukraine. Maybe Fox News will do a segment.

Rock said his design to hit as many divisive topics as possible, and given its wide reaching platform on Netflix, odds are extremely high that people will talk about it, at least for a little bit, and while courting indignation via persuasive buzzwords. Certainly, as an all Rock did, selective Outrage was in no way built to last. Half the jokes were obsolete before he even finished saying them five minutes on O. J. Simpson in this economy and why does everybody over the age of forty still feel the need to talk about pronouns one of his jokes.

Yeah, kind of hackey. I’m rich, but I identify as poor. My pronoun is broke any my pronoun is is just. I mean, when Roseanne bar did it, we hated it, right, Yeah, Chris, Sorry, dude. The wobbly frame and extra beats actively hurt what was already a pretty average joke toss on a crowd that seemed more bored than anxious, and certainly not loud enough to give the impression of a triumphant stand up routine.

Yeah, I did think the crowd mix was a little low. I noticed that early and then I kind of forgot about it. But that’s a good note. Selective outrage fell flat in more ways than one in theyre ads. I’ll be curious if the sound mixing is amped up in post production for the vast majority of viewers who didn’t tune in live their grade A CS.

One other comment that I saw on the Internet that I’m going to borrow here and I think makes a lot of sense in the postgame show, why did you have David Spade and Dana Carvey host it? Especially when our Seniel Hall was sitting right there. It’s kind of weird, right, all right? That’s your bonus episode against your recap. There’s a normal Monday episode in the feed.

There’s a normal Sunday episode in the feed. And I also dropped my rapid reaction to the special in the feed, so you might have three more things to listen to if you’ve heard it all. Well, I’ll meet you back here toorrow. Follow the show for free on Apple, podcast, Spotify, YouTube, wherever you get your shows. See you tomorrow.

The Shark Deck. Somewhere in the feed, you’ll find a bonus episode talking about Chris rock special Saturday Night. Hi, I’m Johnny Mac with your Daily Comedy News. Now we’ve got to clear something up here. All listeners to this show know where Ryan Hamilton is from.

Here, I don’t have to tell you say it. That’s right. Everybody answered Idaho. Everyone knows Ryan Hamilton is from Idaho. You’d have to be an idiot to think he’s Canadian.

You’d have to be a moron to suggest he’s from Ohio. What kind of fool would do that? Now, you may remember a couple of weeks ago I mentioned Ryan Hamilton and I said he was Canadian, and then Tom shot me a note telling me I was wrong, And then I clarified that, oh yeah, he’s not Canadian, he’s from Ohio.

And then Scott, also a friend of the show, shot a note and like, dude, you go…

He’s not from Ohio, He’s from Idaho. So Tom has shot me another note, and I told Tom would put a little spin on his text, which was written in a very friendly manner. But I’m gonna put some spin on it. Let the record show that I said in the first email in this chain that Ryan Hamilton was from Idaho, which we know Ryan Hamilton is from. He adds, I heard you say Ohio, but after checking in and make sure that I said Idaho, which we all know Ryan Hamilton is from, I decided to let it go.

Fortunately, another friend of the show held you accountable smiley face crying emoji. Tom even sent his original email, which let me read it to you verbade him correctly. This time. He wrote, Dude, Ryan Hamilton may seem Canadian, but he’s from Idaho. It’s been a big part of his stand up.

How and why I misread Idaho as Ohio? Who knows? But the only way to clear this up is I think we need to hear from Ryan Hamilton himself. Presumably Ryan knows where he’s from, So let’s check in with Ryan. I’m from Idaho.

Nobody’s disputing that I look like where I’m from, don’t. I mean, you know you don’t look at me right away and go that guy’s from Idaho. But when I say it out loud, everybody thinks that makes sense. To me, I think that guy is legit from Idaho, all right? That seems to clear it up.

Now, if you listen every day and you hear my accent, you’re like John must be from like Georgia. You probably listen next to Jeff Foxworthy. You know I’m actually from New York City, believe it or not, which sets up this next clip from Ryan. New Yorkers have no clue you know where you’re from? Idaho?

Why that’s what it feels like. Why I don’t know? That’s where I done been borns that’s why. That’s where God Dune birth me.

And then they’ll try to connect.

They go, oh, I know it, you know it. Congratulations, it’s a state in your country. You should know it.

And then they go, no, I know it.

This is what you tell me. It’s in the Midwest. No, it isn’t. If you’d like to watch that complete clip, you’ll find it on YouTube. Ryan Hamilton drags New Yorkers very very funny.

Do you hear the Jerry in there? Yeah, little Jerry are in there. Ryan’s fantastic end, as you know, from Idaho. Late Night, which had been slumping, is back Baby. They had a bunch of great jokes about seepack.

Now, if you don’t know what seatback is, Jimmy Kimmel explains Seepack stance for clowns periodically assembling in convention centers. Fallon says it’s basically Coachella for people who post on Facebook and all caps, and he’s actually the Conservative Political Action Conference. Kimmel said they started it with the traditional twenty one assault rifle salute and the pledge of allegiance to Donald Trump. Fallon Sepack calls itself the largest and most influential gathering of conservatives in the world. The speeches are serious, while the people trying to dance at the afterparty are hilarious.

Kimmel the conference held at the Gaylord Harbor National Resort and Convention Center, which is another reason Mike Pence doesn’t attend. Kimmel add some great panels lined up. People go to see panels like no Chinese balloons above Tennessee Sacking the Woke playbook, parents with pitchforks. Those are all real. Kimmel then tagged it with I saw parents with pitchforks at Coachella last year.

A really good band Falon and this is nice. After each speech there’ll be a QAnon I’m sorry Q and a THEO von spoke with the Boston Globe and they were like, hey, Theo von what made you start your podcast this past weekend? Back in twenty sixteen, THEO said, I walked out of Joe Rogan’s one day and I said, man, I can do this differently, and I just started in my kitchen. I started sitting there and talking, telling stories from growing up. I was at my place with Hollywood, where I was at my wits end.

Hollywood offers this diamond in the distance, come here and you’ll have a chance. But I got to Hollywood and there weren’t a lot of shows with anybody from my area with my point of view. Why don’t these people see me. They don’t want to see me. They don’t want to think there could be a poor white guy from the South who isn’t to racist and dumb and the child of ruby cheek Republicans who drinks oil at night.

They asked him if the podcast has changed his relationship with his fans. He said, it’s not like back in the day, or if you saw a celebrity on the street and you were a fan of them. The podcasting it’s different. There are fans who know you. They’re fans who’d probably become friends with.

When someone’s like, hey, man, I listen to your podcast, that puts me a totally different level with them because we probably think about some of the same stuff. It’s been a gift because I’ve had people come and say things to me that I needed to hear it that I wouldn’t have been able to orate for myself. That’s pretty cool. Whitney Cummings spoke to people about having children and she said, hey, look here’s the thing I have all the time in the world. I have biological children.

There’s no rush. I did freeze my eggs. Whitney Cummings is forty and added they have a beautiful beach front and Redondo, California. They’re on better real estate than me. I do want them to get out before the sea level rises and they flood.

But I was going to try this year to get pregnant. Interesting. If you missed Adam Sandler on his recent North American tour, who you are in luck He’s added more tour dates. I mean, who is a bigger fan of Adam Sandler’s hilarious stand up comedy and fine movies than I am. I’m online right now trying to get tickets for April thirteenth and Newark, Boy, I hope I can get in.

I’d hate to miss an Adam Sandler’s show. He’s also playing Philadelphia, Buffalo, New York, at Detroit, Louisville, and Cleveland, Ohio. I like how they had a specify Cleveland, Ohio. Are there other Cleveland’s Let’s look, Wow, there are twenty eight places named Cleveland America, three in the UK and two more in Australia. So just to be clear here, Adam Sandler is not playing Cleveland, Wisconsin.

He’s not playing Cleveland, West Virginia. He’s not playing Cleveland, Utah. Are you gonna do all twenty eighth, John, No, he’s not playing Cleveland Middlesborough. So if you’re in the UK, no Adam Sandler for you, and I got bad news for your fee in Tasmania, no Adam Sandler. But if you’re in Cleveland, Ohio, and I know for a fact there are listeners to this podcast in Cleveland, Ohio, I know that guaranteed.

I even have their phone numbers. Adam Sandler, He’s coming to see you, babe. Sadler’s also working on Murder Mystery two that co stars Jennifer Anniston, and this article here says don’t expect Adam Sandler to read reviews of the flick. The comedian recently revealed that he stopped reading his press after Billy Madison flopped back in nineteen ninety five, and I doubt Sandler listens to me. So my big plan for the day is I’m going to try and go run a seven and a half miler.

My wife and I signed up for a fifteen k so that’s about nine miles and that’s two and a half weeks out and I am not ready for it. So today it’s actually warm where I live, and I’m planning on going out for a long run, which brings us to today’s sponsor, The Power of the Streak. The Power of the Streak and easy to read book by Carol Wood. The Power of the Streak answers the age old question how to stay consistent with exercise and keep motivated over time. I had sody last week.

I got a streak going, I snapped it. Now why did I snap it? Oh? Because it’s snowed, that’s why. And I had to take an hour and a half to shovel the driveway.

So my workout time went to the snow. Is shoveling snow a workout? Perhaps maybe we’ll find the answer in the Power of the Streak. Who knows. But I’ve been pretty good lately, pretty good going back and forth between running on the treadmill and doing Apple Fitness Plus spin classes.

Those are fun, but once it warms up, I want to get back outside. I do so much better outside. If you struggle with working out regularly, or if you started exercising and then you find yourself back where you started after a couple of weeks, you need to check out the book The Power of the Streak. Kara ads zero motivation for years. She eventually flipped the switch and has not looked back.

Through her story of starting and keeping a running streak for twelve years, through a demanding career, and after two childbirths and all the chaos of being a wife and a mother, Kara shares the secrets of having the drive to exercise and no matter what, her story is funny, relatable, and inspiring. Plus and this is cool. She gives you a step by step guide of how you can do the same thing with any exercise. It does not have to be running. My question for her doesn’t include shoveling snow.

Good question, right now, it’s actually it’s terrible question, John. The book has a low key, authentic and relaxed style, but is also entertaining and motivating even a cynic. I know those people, HI will leave feeling inspired and excited to commit once and for all for this dreaded exercise thing. Plus percentage of royalties are being donated to the Special Olympics, which is way cool. The Power of the Streak by Kara Wood available in all formats on Amazons and Noble.

There’s an audiobook on iTunes and Audible. Are you on social media? Of course you are the power of the Streak on Instagram at the power of the Streak, Twitter, at Power of Streak. You can even listen to this podcast while working out. So don’t blame me.

Don’t be like you know, Sean, I would have worked out today, but I had to donate fifteen minutes to you bashing Adam Sandler And it’s your fault. It is not my fault. They ever so serious? How are Condebolu spoke to LitHub. Harry said, I decided to do stand up at high school.

I started doing it in college. There were open mics and things. There were no comedy clubs, so there were no other places to go. I was the only show in town, and I liked it. I was at Bowdoin College and Brunswick, Maine.

I’m a queen’s kid. In Maine, I stood out like a sore thumb. Not even a sore thumb, just a brown thumb. Didn’t need to be sore. It was just that I perfectly find thumb, but it’s a different pigment.

It was shocking, coming from Queens to be in a place with so much wealth and so much whiteness, and a type of whiteness I’ve never really seen, you know, kind of a waspy in New England, prep school, boarding school whiteness with it different set of standards that I didn’t understand. Wanda Sykes is so funny you could choke. At one of her shows. She tell the story to James Cordon said, the show is going well and they’re yelling at me from over the side of the stage. I’m like, what’s going on?

They were like, you need a paramedic. This guy apparently he had a lot to drink. It’s always alcohol involved, and it was laughing so hard that he puked and then started choking on his own vomit. Oh no medical crews were called in to work on the choking man. Joel McHale was one of the guests on Cordon and chimed in and said, that must have been a funny joke.

Anytime somebody quits a hit show, I always point out people like Dennis Franz, Patrick Stewart and Kelsey Grammer. If you walk up to Kelsey Grammer and you go, hey, do you want to play Fraser? He doesn’t say like, no, you know, I want to do something else. He goes, oh, paycheck, I’ll do it. So Frasier’s coming back, and now Lilith is coming back.

The new New Frasier sees Frasier coming to a different city. I love how they keep saying different city. We know it’s Boston, with new challenges to face, new relationships to forge, and an old dream or two to finally fulfill. Frasier and Lilith spoilers, spoilers, spoilers, spoilers reunite at Freddy’s birthday party. You know Freddy’s an adult now it’s been a couple of years.

Lilith in classic form is far from pleased about having to share Freddy. Now that Frasier’s back in Boston, what begins as a fun party with friends and family inevitably becomes a little Hit and Frasier Showdown for the ages. Very exciting. Huh. And that’s your comedy news for today.

Where’s Ryan Hamilton from? That’s right, I’m glad you know the answer. Follow the show for free on Apple, podcast, Spotify, YouTube, wherever you get your shows. Seeing tomorrow And somewhere there’s a bonus episode about the Chris rock Ding. So you’re at McDonald’s and you get your bag and you open your bag you want to grab a couple of fries or something, and there’s five thousand dollars in it.

Yeah, this happened at one guy. Hi, I’m Johnny Mac, host of five Good News Stories. He gave the money back. Don’t worry. If you want to start your day with a smile, twice a week, I’ve got five good news stories for you.

For example, there’s an airline for dogs. Or what about the woman in her eighties who just released your debut album. How about the dude who found one hundred and fifty corn on the cobs under his floorboards? Is corn on the cobs even the way you say that, who cares? And yes, that was a pony at the supermarket.

The Shark Deck. I’m Johnny Mac with a rapid reaction to the Chris Rock Special. It is eleven seventeen PM and I just turned off the postgame show. This will be a little less focused than a normal podcast because I’m not really working off a script. I do have some light notes and I’m just sharing my thoughts.

What’s going through my mind now is You’ve heard me talk in the past about the hypothetical return of Eddie Murphy to stand up, and I think this is a good warning to Eddie that nothing could ever lead up to the hype. I’m coming away from a Chris Rock special that probably is perfectly fine. It’s definitely not his best work, but because of the anticipation for a year, what’s Chris Rock going to say about Will Smith? And for Chris to not get to that material to an hour in, I think that was a mistake. And I say that, and I mentioned this on Twitter.

I say that realizing Chris Rock is one of the all time greats and I’m an idiot in the basement recording a podcast. So yeah, Chris Rock knows a lot more about comedy than I do. But just as if you were, I’m like, get to it, get to get to it, and he buried it, and I think the energy was out of the room. So just now I was sticking around for the post game and I’m like, oh, this is gonna be a tough set up, and they immediately threw it to Kareem Abdul Jabbar for his take, and I was like, dude, it’s quarter after eleven. I’m tired.

I no longer care. I’ll let me go through my notes here and I’ll handle this in chronological order as I wrote things down. So about nine seventeen or so, I went to Netflix. I went to the waiting room and it said the special would load, and then it hadn’t buy, like nine thirty three. I’m like, hmm, so I had to exit and go back in.

And because of that, I missed the first three minutes of Ronny Chieng. Other than that, you know, a little stuttering here and there, the Netflix tech was pretty good. I’m sure there’s a way they can figure out how to make sure the room actually loads if you get there too early, but whatever. Fine. So when I got there, Ronny Chieng was already in the middle of his set and he was joking about Netflix’s innovation of doing comedy on Saturday Night Live, which got a good laugh out of me, and he pointed out it was comedy on Saturday Night Live with Chris Rock, David Spade, and Dana Carvey.

Pretty good observation there, nice spot for Ronny Chieng, pretty high visibility. I thought he was pretty good. Deon Cole was your DJ. Dion had nothing to say. I don’t know why he was there, but okay, fine.

Then they threw it to Spade and Carvey to tease the postgame show, David Spade doing most of the talking. Carvey had his back to the camera, which telegraph that he was probably setting up some sort of bit what’s going to happen when he turns around? And Carvey did a really awful hack Joe Biden. It was bad. I’ll read you my notes on myself verbatim.

Carvey doing an awfully hack Biden. Geez.

And then the part that annoyed me in the pregame show was remember all week I…

It was just really lame b roll. Amy Schumer’s part was filmed on the street, as if like somebody found her on the street and had a flipcam and was like, Amy’s about Chris Rock for five seconds, and she did Paul McCartney I think was on a total of three seconds. It said something like Chris Rock’s really funny, hey, and that was it. Like, as I mentioned during the week, I worked at a place that lived and died. By the press release, I get the press release and Netflix, congratulations, your press release said, featuring Amy Schumer, Jerry he signed, called Paul McCartney, Matthew McConaughey, and whoever else she got in there, and I took the bait.

But boy, as a viewer, lame. Ronny Chieng mentioned that the Netflix is a Joe Comedy festival. We’ll take place May second to the twelfth. I think that was an announcement. I don’t recall doing a story telling you about the festival returning, so that’s good news.

He didn’t mention who would be playing there, but there were a bunch of recognizable comedians in the crowd, so who knows. I’m sure we’ll have something in the next few days that we can talk about. I’m still on the pregame show, here JB. Smooth happened. He was funny enough.

He off and gets by on energy. His bit was a bit forced, but it was fine. Leslie Jones then came out to do some stand up. Oh. At one point they threw it to Jeff Ross, who opened for Chris Rock.

I wish they had just shown Jeff Ross warming up the audience. That would have been better than the pregame show. Anyway, Leslie got up did some stand up, and it felt like she was playing to the room. Her material was a little inside baseball. I never got to mention, like I said at the top, this is a little more free form than I usually do.

The pregame show sounded like it was to a room of about eight people, like the audience wasn’t reacting. At the end of the half hour pregame, it was revealed that the audience was mostly comics. That explains that comics aren’t going to laugh at other comics. They’re going to sit in the back and go like, oh, that was really good, or even hate on whoever’s on stage. So that made sense, but it made the room sound dead.

Anyway, Leslie got up and she kind of repeated the SNL joke about it being comedy on Saturday Night Live. I guess she didn’t know Ronnie did it and her version wasn’t as good, so that landed flat.

And then finally it was ten o’clock and time for Chris Rock to come on.

At that point, I tweeted, this is fun. Feels like an event, like it really felt like old time TV or like a sporting event where we’re all watching the same thing at the same time, and it felt big. So out comes Rock? Do we get kay? Early, I flagged a couple of jokes.

One was about r Kelly and Michael Jackson Chris’s punchline along the lines of same crime. One of them has better songs that get a good laugh out of me. Then he did a chunk on Elon Musk and I thought that chunk was really good. Next thing, I wrote down what’s up with Chris Rocks shoes? And I googled.

He’s five ten, so it’s not like he’s short. Why the two inch three inch lifts on the shoes? Why does he need to look taller on camera? I just that was catching my eye, and I’ll point out if I’m focused on your shoes. The comedy’s not on point right because I’m not.

I’m like my mind is drifting. Then he went into a really strong chunk about Megan Markle, and I think this might have actually been the strongest part of the night. A good line about the British Royal family calling them the og racists, calling them the sugar Hill Gang of racism. That got a good laugh out of me. My notes on myself.

There was the Megan Markle chunk was when Chris Rock found his groove. I compared it to a baseball starting pitcher finding his good stuff in the third inning and now cruising in a good way. First ten minutes or so. I don’t think Chris was totally in his rhythm, but for the Megan part, yeah, he was rolling.

And then the special started to fall apart, and I wrote, is there a clause in…

Like they weren’t that good? And I don’t know, It’s like you’re just waving a flag now to get people to react. Especially the combination of doing transgender jokes on Netflix. I don’t think it was worth going there. I don’t think it paid off.

At ten thirty four, I wrote, Chris has waited way too long to get to will Smith and he’ll need a killer closer or this will be a letdown. Let’s see what happened. So right after the halfway mark, I’m like the next thing, I wrote abortion chunk, getting a reaction on Twitter, it’s been a boring ten minutes. Yeah, the abortion chunk. I started to just zone out and I wasn’t feeling the room, and I was looking at what people are saying on social and it seemed like that was where the special probably dipped the most, and people were like getting pretty restless.

My next note was, it’s been a boring thirty minutes. Yeah, there’s a solid half hour that’s just kind of like AI and we’re getting out to that or h. Chris finally got to the Will Smith material at eleven o’clock, so or a full hour, and he finally got into it and it was fun. He seemed genuinely angry, not having seen him do this material on other nights. Is this him putting on an act or did the live national audience kick him into an extra gear where he felt the emotions in more of a raw way than maybe he did on other nights, I don’t know, but watching it on TV, he seemed to have genuine anger during that segment, and that was a strong segment, not as strong as the Megan part.

Though. He also blew a joke that’s not me saying that. He said that the joke was along the lines of Jada being upset that Will Smith did not get an oscar for concussion, so instead he gave me a concussion. But he blew the joke and said the movie emancipation the first time around, then admitted he blew the joke, kind of tapped dance and circled his way back around to get the concussion joke in, but he had telegraphed it so it didn’t land when he finally did it.

And then he did an actual mic drop and we were done at about the seventy minu…

I think that chunk would have worked better about twenty minutes in, but what do I know. He’s an all timer and I’m tweeting, So that’s my quick take there. I want to like it more, I don’t hate it. Let me say my twenty twenty three rankings. My immediate take right now, I have Napergatzy at number one.

Was it better than Nate? No? Was it better than Jim Jeffries? No? Was it better than the roast of mister Peanuts?

Can you believe I’m actually humming and hawing was Chris Rock’s big One year later, I’m gonna finally talk about Will Smith better than the roast of mister Peanut? I? Yes, I gotta say. Yeah there. I’m opening up my little notepad here and I’m putting Chris Rock at three.

But I only have four things on the list, and the fourth is roast of mister Peanuts. So I don’t know. That’s my quick take. Would love to know what you guys think, so hit me up in the Daily Comedy News Facebook group, or on the Reddit or on social media. All the links are in the notes.

It’s a little late here. You can hear my voices giving out. But my takeaway right now is that was okay? If your new follow show for free on Apple, podcast, Spotify, or YouTube wherever you get your shows, normal episode in the feed the way I scheduled at this normal Sunday episode came out one minute before this bonus episode, and you know, go listen to that and I’ll see you tomorrow on Monday’s episode. I do not talk about Chris Rock at all because I already recorded it, all right.

See. Yeah, so you’re at McDonald’s and you at your bag and you open your bag you want to grab a couple of fries or something, and there’s five thousand dollars in it. Yeah, this happened at one guy. Hi, I’m Johnny Mac, host of Five Good News Stories. He gave me the money back.

Don’t worry. If you want to start your day with a smile. Twice a week, I’ve got five good news stories for you. For example, there’s an airline for dogs. Or what about the woman in her eighties who just released her debut album.

How about the dude who found one hundred and fifty corn on the cobs under his floorboards? Is corn on the cobs? Even the way you say that? Who cares? And yes, that was a pony at the supermarket.

What did Anthony Jeselnik say about Dave Chappelle’s complaints about being canceled?

Jeselnik argued that if you’re as big as Chappelle, people will get upset at the things you say, and that it’s part of why he does comedy, so he doesn’t understand the complaint.

How did Bert Kreischer improve his Machine routine?

After his wife told him he was phoning it in, he started finding fun ways to tell the story as if for the first time and writing new jokes within the routine instead of repeating the same twelve minutes verbatim.

When did Ralph Barbosa’s comedy career take off?

Around November 2022, his social media grew significantly, he started booking more road gigs, filmed an HBO special, and by December/January was approved for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

What advice did Ralph Barbosa give about writing comedy?

He said the more specific you are in your comedy, the more relatable you end up being, and that staying true to yourself and sharing how you feel as an individual usually works out well.

Why did Fortune Feamster’s career stall early on?

She was told she wasn’t ready for a Netflix special and was considered too different at a time when Hollywood wanted everyone to be like everybody else, which forced her back on the road to develop her material.

Has Kate Berlant received offers from her sold-out show?

No, despite being overwhelmed by the response and having every show sold out, she said she doesn’t have an offer yet.

Why did Netflix cancel Glow?

Marc Maron explained that Netflix couldn’t keep holding onto the studios and actors, and there was no safe way to shoot the show with that many actors during COVID.

The shark deck. It seems the comedians a kind of hand it with Chappelle playing the victim card. Hi, I’m Johnny Mac with your Daily Comedy News. You know, Dave should be the answer to who’s the top comedian of the twenty twenties, and the answer should just be Dave Chappelle. What has happened is if you mentioned Dave Chappelle, everybody goes, oh, the guy that makes trans jokes, and now, oh, the guy that winds that he’s canceled, and Dave’s clearly not canceled at all.

Anthony Jessnik said, if you’re as big as he is, people are going to get upset at the things you say. It’s part of what you do and it’s part of why you do it. So I don’t understand the complaint Dave makes so much money, your job should be a little hard. I don’t have sympathy for you in that he says whatever he wants to, but great when there’s pushedback. I don’t know why it bothers him.

Bert Kreisher was on Pardon My Take. He was talking about the machine routine is almost every interview with Bert Kreisher winds up talking about that routine for you know, good reasons. And we’ve got the movie coming out this summer. I’m looking forward to the movie. I think on the other side of that baby, we could stop talking about the machine for a while.

So he’s talking about back in the day, I’m doing clubs twenty five dollars tickets and I’m telling the machine close to every show. And my wife comes and sees me in San Francisco and she says, at the end of the show, Hey, you don’t tell that story anymore. And I said for real, and she goes, yeah, you’re phoning it in and it’s not worth the money they’re paying. And I was like what, and she goes, either tell it or don’t tell it. But if you’re gonna tell it, effing tell it, like really tell it.

And I went I am telling it and she goes no, and I go, well, I don’t want to do I’m just saying the same twelve minutes verbatim. It’s killing me. And she was like, then find fun with it. So what I would do is I’d find fun ways. I’d tell it as if I was telling it for the first time, and I try to find a way to write a joke, and I have so many jokes inside the machine story.

I did the one the other day about a pivotal moment we realize you don’t have the biggest penis in the world, Like you just have your thing and clean this up here, and you’re like, oh, this is great, and then you go in a locker room in ninth grade and you’re like, what the f I remember going in a locker room looking at a stuff and going, oh, I thought black was a slimming color.

And then you go, oh, cool, I have a cool bit.

And then he answered into the Machine. Ralph Barbosa been in the news a lot lately, Thanks George Lopez. Hey Ralph, when did you first notice your comedy crew were starting to blow up? This from the La Times, Barbosa said, around November, my social media had grown quite a bit. I started getting book more on the road.

I filmed a special for HBO, but November there was a lot of promo for it, and we did a promotional event at the New York Comedy Festival. So with Instagram going up and TikTok blowing up and all the other stuff was kind of mind blowing everything all at once. By December slash January. I was booking more gigs and I was approved to do the tonight show of Fallon. There’s a few months before that, I was struggling to make ends meet, running from open mic to open mic.

Good for him, man. They asked him about the comedy scene in Dallas. He said, Yeah, this is a handful of clubs there. We have the Addison Improv, the Hienias clubs, Backdoor Comedy. That’s a clean club.

Kind of funny to me that backdoor comedy is clean. Think about it. Yeah, move on, which means you can’t curse on stage, which I feel helped me make my writing better. It’s not like work or La. We can get up in front of some big names every night, but you can definitely stay busy, which is all I really needed.

When I started traveling, I worried my jokes wouldn’t translate because I was all the performing in Dallas for a long time, and I thought one of my stuff’s not cut out for crowds outside Texas or Dallas. What I’ve been finding isn’t no matter where I go, tons of people cannot to my stuff, even if they don’t go through what I’m talking about a lot of people have still felt stuff when I’m feeling. I think when it comes to comedy in general, the more specific you are, the more relatable you end up being. Brian Reagan, so the Duanne Go Harold. There’s a lot of comedians out there who are great at what they do.

I’ve always been a big Jerry Seinfeld fan. You go back in time to the big names, George carl and Richard Pryor. I like Jonathan Winter’s a lot. I like Johnny Carson. A lot of comedians out there doing good things.

But you gotta be careful not to pattern yourself after somebody. You might like what they do, but you always try to carve your own unique path in this business. I think if you stay true to yourself, make sure that you’re sharing how you feel is an individual on stage, it usually works out pretty good. I don’t like to hurt people’s feelings. I wouldn’t talk about how someone looks or something like that.

I wouldn’t make fun of someone. I think behavior is fair game. I wouldn’t mind going after somebody about their behavior. Mostly I talked about myself. I’d like to be self effacing when I’m on stage, but in terms of topics.

I think ultimately all topics are fair game. It just depends how you approach them. As long as you have some moral compass inside of you and you’re just trying to make people laugh on pointing out certain things, then I think everything’s available. It’d be talked about Fortune Feamster until Kentucky dot Com. Very early on in my career, I was getting told no constantly because I was considered different.

I came up at a time when being different wasn’t really celebrated. Was still that time in Hollywood where people wanted you to be like everybody else. Her career kind of stalled when she pitched Netflix an hour long special, and the feedback I was getting was that I wasn’t ready, and that forced me to go back on the road and really digging on my material and be like, what am I trying to say? She went back and worked out what became her special, Sweet and Salty, that aired on Netflix in twenty twenty. She said, I liked that narrative and the personal feeling to it.

By the time I got a yes from Netflix, I really tapped into what I think is now my voice. The New Yorker asked Kate bro Lant, what do you think about when people talk about you as an industry favorite or every comedian’s favorite comedian. She said, I’ll take it. She’s enjoying doing her show these days, and she says, I’m already nostalgic for this time. I’m overwhelmed by the response to the show and the fact that every single show was sold out and people are coming multiple times.

It’s my dream come true.

And then they asked her you getting work from it, and she said, nope, I don’t…

Mark Marrin spoke about the ending of Netflix’s Glow. Remember Glow, Women Wrestlers, Fun Show, Alison Brie. Remember Alison Brie in episode one? Either know what I’m referencing or not move on. Johnny Mac Wow enjoyed that episode.

COVID was so harrowing, and what I was going through personally was so harrowing too. I think Netflix is going to cut it loose anyway. I’m sorry I’m laughing at that, but if you got it, you got it. I’m upset about the bad luck, but I believe that Netflix held onto those studios and those actors for a long time, and I know they have bottomless pockets and they have all this money, but they didn’t do it lightly. He was disappointing when they finally said, luck, we can’t keep holding onto these studios and there was really no way to shoot it safely with that many actors.

There was COVID remember COVID, Yes, there just wasn’t. But I’m upset that they didn’t. Why couldn’t they just made a movie? Well, why can’t they make a movie? Maren said, I don’t know anyone’s working on one if they believed in it.

I’m more man at Netflix in general for not just saying, but why don’t we make this last season a film? They could have done that. We could have shot that after the pandemic. But now pay attention to here. Maren said, but I don’t think they’re really good at supporting anything that doesn’t add up to global business for them.

That’s just the nature of it. So yeah, I was disappointed because we needed to finish it. We were going to finish it, Allison’s character in mind, We’re going to get together. That’s not the first interview where I’ve seen Maren below a little steam in the direction of Netflix. When he was promoting the HBO special.

There was some line I’m quite sparaphrasing here, like who wants a Netflix special anyway? And I’m looking at that going like, I don’t know everybody, so I don’t know what’s going on there. Maybe he’s just upset about glow from Cracked, LA based comedian Logan Gunslman has an affinity for a typical advertising. For one week, Gunslman ran sidebar ads on certain websites, you know, the ones with naked ladies and stuff that kind. Yeah, Gunsman said.

During the pandemic, I had a lot of free time, so I was visiting porn sites more frequently. I’d get distracted by how insane the ads were, and I thought, it seems like they’ll buy anyone by ads. I wonder how hard it is set up. I googled it. It was pretty easy.

She spent probably twenty minutes shooting some silly suggestive photos or the ad campaign than a few hours photoshopping images and adding captions like you know what feels better than finishing laughing? Well, I’m trying hardier to clean this one up. I’ve got the perfect thing to listen to right after you are done. A twenty minute recording of a woman talking, and it had a link to her album That’s really funny. She said.

Most porn ads are bad, so these can be bad too. She paid a total of one hundred and fifty dollars to run her promotion for one week and select zip codes. So I run some ads from my podcast. A bunch of horny dudes could be like, what the hell is this dude? Yeah, the ad campaign didn’t work out so well.

Her dream is to advertise at her shows on the TV screens at the Department of Motor Vehicles, but it turns out that’s actually like five grand. More recently, she publicized some shows in Louisville, Kentucky by dumping a bucket of ky lubrigants all over herself. Ky as in Kentucky, get it. She did that in an Instagram post. She also hosts a monthly show with the Blind Barber in LA That’s strictly by OL.

The Shark Deck. Happy Chris Rock Day. I’m Johnny Mac with your Daily Comedy News. Did you see this? The US Energy Department released a report that said the COVID vandemic might have been started by a Chinese lab leak.

Jimmy Fallon said, America’s heard, and we’re like, hey, thanks for that, three years too late information any Game of Thrones spoilers. Valin again, Yeah, they think COVID started a lab, but said they only have low confidence in the report. Low confidence, which is just one notch above. We have no freaking idea. Hasan minhas Josting the Daily Show give him the job already said, how can you conclude something with low confidence?

That’s not a conclusion. I think the word you’re looking for is guess, Fallon, I mean low confidence. That’s like me saying I think I could bench three thousand pounds, but I have low confidence. Tonight ten eastern the Big Chris Rock Special. Join me on Facebook.

I’ll be hanging out in the Daily Comedy News podcast group. I’ll start that at around nine thirty. We can watch the pregame show together. We can comment about Jerry Seinfeld and Amy Schumer and everybody else. And you can say stuff and I could say stuff.

I’m also going to drop a bonus episode of the podcast just covering the Chris Rock stuff. I don’t know when that’ll come out, sometime between like tonight and midday Monday. I’ve got a lot of soccer on Sunday, so I’m not sure where I’m gonna be able to bang it out. And I can’t bang it out too early because I want to collect some reactions and stuff. So we’ll see how it goes.

But there’s a bonus episode coming about Chris Rock Netflix as a pregame show at nine thirty. Seinfeld and Schumer and a bunch of others are going to be on that, then Chris Rock at ten East, and then a postgame show with David Spade and Dana Carvey and guests like Kareema dul Jabbar, JB. Smooth and our Senil Hall. How this all works At nine twenty Eastern, if you pop on Netflix, you’ll see a red watch Live button, so that’s a new thing, right, and then you can enter the waiting room before the pre show starts. If you’re late to the show, you can hit a play from the beginning button or watch Live.

The special will be available to rewatch on Netflix once the stream concludes, but the pre and postgame shows will not, so if you want to watch those live nine thirty tonight. According to the Huffington Post, Chris Rock has been working out of the Comedy Cellar. He also had done a recent show in Baltimore working out this material. I’m going to talk about the specific material. So if you don’t want me poisoning your brain with a the jokes b the jokes told poorly by me, you might want to skip ahead a few minutes.

I’ll give you a second here. At the recent show in Baltimore, Rock worked the Will Smith’s stuff in. He teased it early on. Using rhythm and repetition. It builds comic impact, pitching his voice high and loud to underscore his indignation.

Then the line that I talked about yesterday, Will Smith practices selective outrage. People who are in the know know that stuff had nothing to do with me. At another point, he took issue with the children’s nursery rhyme, sticks and stones, joking words only hurt if you’ve never been punched in the face. Vanity Fair has recounted everything Chris Rock has said about the slap so far on stage, So these are major spoilers if you want to skip ahead. Last April, at a show in Atlantic City, Chris Rock joke he had an interesting week and choked that Atlantic City is too close to Philly, referencing Will Smith’s hometown.

On April eighth, he was in California and said, life is good. I got my hearing back. I’m okay. I have a whole show to perform, and I’m not talking about that until I get paid. May third, Chris Rock opened for Dave Chappelle at the Netflix Is a Joke Festival in La.

Remember somebody jumped up on the stage and attack Dave Chappelle. Chris Rock choked, was that Will Smith? Two nights later, Dave and Chris discussed the attacks. Chappelle joked, at least you got smacked by somewhat of repute. I got smacked by a homeless guy with leaves in his hair.

July twenty nine, Will Smith releases a six minute long YouTube apology video. In the video, Will Smith says, I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable, and I’m here whenever you’re ready. To talk. That same day, Chris Rock played the Fox Theater and said, everybody’s trying to be an effing victim.

If everybody claims to be victim, then nobody will hear the real victims. August twenty eight in Phoenix, This is great job by Vanity Fair. Huh. Chris Rock jokes that hosting the Oscars would be like returning to the seam of a crime, like OJ asking Nicole Brown Simpson and go back to the restaurants. Rock adds he’s bigger than me.

The state of Nevada would not sanction a fight between me and Will Smith. September first, in the UK, Chris Rock jokes that Will Smith is as ugly as the rest of us and tells co HEADLINERD Dave Chappelle that he got slapped over the nicest joke I ever told. November tenth, they announced the live Netflix special March first, Chris Rock said, the other day I watched Emancipatient just so I could watch him getting whipped nine thirty tonight, come hang out on Facebook Daily Comedy News podcast group Marlon Wayans as a news special. This came out yesterday. He did a lengthy interview with the Holly Reporter, and this does come back to Chris Rock and Will Smith here in a second.

This special fully financed and produced by Marlon Wayans himself. The Hollywood Reporter asked him, when did you decide the special was going to be about the slap and did HBO Max have any questions? Marland said, I’d seen the slap when it happened. I swear I watched it like everybody else, and I called Chris Will see everybody’s a friends like, texted Will and I was like, are you okay? Chris?

I was like, where’s your face? I was doing a show in Oxnard that weekend and I talked about it on stage with the improv. I had five minutes of thoughts, and I like to speak truth on stage and see where it goes. So I did that and by the end of the week I had fifteen minutes. I kept exploring the truth and it became like a rub excupe to me.

I got one side, that’s the Chris Rock side. I got what’s my experience with Jada, and then what’s my experience with Will? What’s my experience in the industry, what’s my experience as a black person, what do white people feel. Before I knew it, I had an hour of material. I was actually doing a set about my mom and dealing with the grief of losing my mother.

I was like, sorry, Ma, I’m gonna put you on a side for a second. I need to explore this. I did Netflix as a joke in April. I had all this material, an hour and a half, and then this set all blended, but it was bifurcated, so I decided to separate the tube. Before I knew it, I had an hour in this Chris Will and Jada thing.

Normally he tour for a year or two. I tour this for three months. This is really really interesting, right Like, as I’m reading this, I’m like, oh, I want to watch this special tonight, except I’m not home this week and I have a lot of soccer. Plus I don’t know if I mentioned it as a Chris Rock special to watch. I wrote it on stage.

I never put a pen to the things I experienced the set. Maybe it’s because I’ve been doing stand up so much of the past ten to twelve years. It’s allowed me to have the freedom to create in front of people. Before I knew and I had this beautiful piece. It felt good, Audiences gave me standing ovations.

Women loved it. It was just such an honest perspective and didn’t come from a mean place. It came from like a healing place, not just for myself but for the involved and for the people who watched it. I failed it in August in Atlanta because I did a show there and I loved it. It’s a great room.

Then I cut it together and presented it to HBO Max and they did something they never do, which is they loved it so much they licensed it. Marlon Wayams was asked did he reach out to Will Smith or Chris Rock. No, because in their art they don’t ask me, what do you think of this? I think as artist, we all do what we do, especially because it’s such a sensitive subject. I didn’t want their opinions.

I just hope they gauge and trust that I love them, that I’m being objective and being honest and being real. And the purpose of this is more healing than it is deconstruction. I did this in Atlanta on purpose, because black women will tell you when you went too far, they will they’ll go, don’t do that. And this one got a standing ovation. They loved it.

The Holly Reporter said, Chris rock style is more cutting than yours, which we see in the special, can at times offer grace to your subjects. How do you feel about more targeted comedy having been on the end of it yourself with Chris Rock, I love it. I think there’s a purpose for doing cutting comedy. I’m a cutting artist. They say mockery is the best form of flattery, and that’s the way we Wayane’s Clan look at it.

Anybody we’ve ever made fun of, for the most part, even in this sensitive time, usually laughs the loudest. Chris Rock is a brilliant comedian. When it comes to looking at the point of view of what’s funny about people, he’s always been. He gives them the truth about what’s funny, even when it’s at as black folks. Chris is I won’t say a mentor.

He never took me under the wing, but he’s somebody that I always looked to in comedy. He’s a brilliant comedian. He can’t take that from him. No slap could slap the greatness out of him. He’s just a brilliant mind and a brilliant comedian.

He’s always been like a big brother because I kind of grew up around him. He and my brother Sean used to do stand up comedy together Keen and Ivory Wayans. But Chris and the movies we know each other. I know his brothers, I know his family. So that’s why for this special I had to talk about it.

I can’t worry about what everybody’s thinking, what everybody feels. I have to talk about it because nobody else is. I have to come from an honest place as a brother. I felt bad for Chris’s brother Tony when this happened. I know me and my brothers would have been waiting outside the oscars ready to jump Will.

But at the same time, I can imagine what Will felt like. So I just felt like in this moment, all I could do is speak truth and hope everybody could see it themselves. But most of all, I saw myself as an artist come together over thirty year period to be like, this is why everything happens to you, Holly Reporter said. In the special, you tackle every perspective or question offered about the incident, except for one major one, which was Pinkett Smith’s alopecia. Why his answer.

That’s a condition, and that’s something I won’t say I’m making fun of. Nobody knew she had it. Jade’s a very stylistic person. She’s fashioned forward. I don’t think Chris saw the episode of Red Table Talk where she talked about it, So I think Chris is just kind of commenting off the top, and I think they were dealing with a condition of it, and Will was being protective.

I just felt it would weigh down the special. That needs its own ten minutes. I think that’s a separate piece and that takes investigation. It’s not what I knew, and I don’t want to be insensitive to anybody who’s going through that. I think that would have just convoluted the message.

So I left it out and I just explored what was funny from place we can digest. That’s a special onto itself. Hollywood Reporter, you spend some time talking about Smith’s relationship to white Hollywood, as well as the different to quorum dynamics among races. How much did you want to say about how whiteness ultimately shaped that slap moment Wayan’s I just want to talk about the truth of everything. Will talks about it in his book.

I’m not uncovering anything. I’m just saying it out loud. Hollywood’s a funny place because it’s like a bank, you get chosen to like a horse, be bet on. It’s different in some ways for comedians. We have to prove ourselves in theaters.

We have to be a proven commodity where stars they find out like eighteen nineteen twenty and they go, we’re gonna ride this horse. Except for somebody like Eddie Murphy was just that big of a star that he could rock for forty years. Even Will, he’s an international box office name. He’s a phenom we’ve never seen as black people. But he talks about that and there’s a lot of precedents to go with that.

So it’s just uncovering the truth from a comedic perspective, not a dramatic perspective. If you look at a guy like Will, I gotta say I’m proud of him up until that moment. What that man is dealt with being the biggest star in the world time in, time out, approven commodity worldwide. They’ll tell you have no value. In Japan, you put yourself on a plane, you go to hand to sell your movies and people are going crazy and you’re proving them wrong.

Will has always been that guy. He’s been a prime example of what it is, not just for me as a black man in Hollywood, but to erase the racism that sometimes comes with Hollywood’s eyes, to say, now, you’re not gonna label me. I love Will, I love Jada, I love Chris. I say that in my special. I’m not coming as an enemy.

I’m coming as a friend with love going Here’s what’s funny about them. I would have sold the jokes to them Oscars night. I was going around, I’d talked to Trevor. Now, I’d talked to Tyler Perry. We’re all sitting there talking.

Everybody’s talking about this. I’m not just a guy to whisper it. I got some jokes. I’m going to say them out loud. Boy.

As long as I went there, there’s still half the article left, So I think I’ll come back to this next week. This really makes me want to watch Marlon Wayans, doesn’t it. Maybe that’ll pair up nicely with Chris Rock Or is that too much? Maybe you would just watch Chris Rock tonight. Maybe do Marlin to Morrow night?

Really looking forward to this. I mean this is a major comedy event. The bar for Chris Rock tonight is so high, Like people have been waiting a year for this thing. Plus it’s live, plus that Netflix added on the pre and postgame hype. I mean this is a major comedy event.

The bar is super high for Chris Rock. Of all the comedians I’ve ever seen live in person, Jerry Seinfeld’s the best, Chris Rock the second best, and they are one and two and very very very very high on my list. So I’m not saying like Jerry’s way better than Chris. I’m just saying I saw back to back at Chris Rock and then Jerry Seinfeld, and Jerry was better than Chris Rock. When I last left you, I was reading US Magazines twenty five things you don’t know about Jim Gaffigan, as provided by Jim Gaffigan on yesterday’s podcast.

I did the first eleven. Don’t you want to learn more things about Jim Gaffigan. Of course you do. Number twelve. The most famous person in Jim Gaffigan’s phone book is Jerry Seinfeld.

I like how he said phone book and not phone My answer is Stephen van z Aunt. By the way number thirteen, His first job grocery stores, stock boy number fourteen, Favorite room his bedroom fifteen, favorite comfort food, Having too much of Anything. Sixteen starstruck moment the first time I appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, and I felt like I was meeting Mark Twain. Proudest moment of my career. Same thing, Letterman, all right, that’s kind of one thing, Jim, that’s not two things.

Eighteen Favorite movie? Forced Mazure? What is that? Forced Majure appears to be a twenty fourteen movie. A young Swedish family, mom, dad, two grade school age kids begin their skiing vacation and a French alpine resort and typical holiday high spirits.

The first day on the slopes, they paused to have their pictures taken by a tourist photographer. Then on the second day, something extraordinary happens. They’re having lunch at the resort’s rooftop restaurant when they hear a loud report from the mountain above them. Snow begins to topple down. It’s a controlled avalanche, a common thing in ski resorts, but this one quickly comes to seem excessive spoilers, but everybody’s okay, and then there seemed to be some twists and turns, and I’ll have to ruin the movie for you, and it’s really about an avalanche of emotions.

Interesting pick, Jim Gaffagan. Next up, I watched Fleischman Is in Trouble and I loved it. That was amazing. I agree, Jim gaff again. Twenty The comedians I looked up to the most when I was growing up were Jerry Seinfeld, George Carlin, and Bill Murray.

Twenty one. The famous face I’m mistaken most for it is Philip Seymour Hoffman. We all know this, Jim. You bring it up in every interview. That’s not something we didn’t know.

We know twenty two. During the summer, I like to decompress by working in my garden. Twenty three. I would never ever do karaoke, no matter how drunk I am, I’d never do that. Twenty four.

The most challenging thing about being a dad of five is everything. Twenty five. My alternate profession would be a farmer. Twenty six. If I ever get really famous, I’ll return the calls of people that helped me in the early two thousands when I was just starting.

Oh no, sorry, that’s not on the list at all. You know, as if today is not a big enough day in comedy, you know what else is happening today? Adam Sandler. He’s going to be honored at the two twenty three Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards. He is winning the King of Comedy Award.

Yes, great job kids. And how old are these kids? Say they’re like seven or eight. I’m sure they love Adam Sandler. They’re so familiar with him.

I’m sure Adam Sandler’s prolific career of more than thirty years will be recognized with a silver blimp statue. He’ll accept the honor while sitting in a giant thrown on the stage. Sandler said, I’ve had so many great times at this fantastic awards extravaganza. I’ll always be excited to hang with duck hiddies. So if you need something to do before Rock, you can watch Adam Sandler and the Kid’s Choice Awards.

It’ll be on Nickelodeon and a bunch of other channels starting at seven Eastern. That should walk you right up to the Chris Rock pregame show. Huh. Adam Sandler, the King of comedy. I feel like what I do here?

Go to buy me a coffee dot com slash Daily Comedy News. There are a couple of bucks in the tip jar. I will take your money. I will go to the National Donuts chain and it will pick up my order that I didn’t even tell you that I ordered already. Yeah, it’s in the phone, large iced coffee, caramel, almond milk.

It’ll be there, it’ll say John m on it. I’ll walk in, I’ll grab it. No one will even talk to me back in the car. Thank you, Buy me coffee dot com slash Daily Comedy News. Sunday is the last day of Just for Laughs London.

I’ve been playing the what should we go see tonight game a day in advance to take advantage of time zones, or to not to disadvantage ourselves of time zones. In case you’re listening in London, you’re like, ah, I wish i’d known this couple hours earlier. Jenny mc right, you got a day in advance. Relax, Well, I would tell you no doubt. We’re going to see this first show at one o’clock and again at three o’clock.

There’s probably two groups new faces If you’ve listened for a long time, you know that I go up to Montreal just to see new faces. Katherine Bohart is your host tonight one o’clock. Should I read the names? No, they’re new faces. You don’t know any of these people.

One two, three, four, five six seven at one o’clock one two, three, four, five, six seven eight at the three o’clock showcase. If we were in London, I’m making you go to both too bad, which means at two o’clock you’re going to miss Basil Brush’s family fun show. This seems to be are you a fox? I don’t know what this is. It looks like a fox wearing a green jacket, joined Basil and mister Martin as it bring you a show full of magic and laughter, storytelling and jokes.

I can hear somebody in the UK right now going, how do you not know what Basil Brush is? It’s and yelling that it’s a coyote or whatever it is. I don’t know what it is. Should I look it up? Basil Brush is a fictional red fox.

See I had it right the first time. It’s not a coyote. Best known for his appearances on Daytime British children’s television. Are there coyotes in the UK? I’m gonna google that too.

We want to know. We know the answer is going to be no, but we got to be sure, right. Basil Brush is primarily portrayed by a glove puppet, but he’s also depicted in animated cartoon shorts and comic strips. He’s got a catchphrase, ha ha ha boom boom are their coyotes in the UK. There are no coyotes in the British Isles.

There are no wild coyotes in Britain, or indeed anywhere outside of North and Central America. There’s a lot of searchers for this and the next one. Do Britain’s hunt coyotes? Are coyotes a menace in Britain? The answer no, there are no wild coyotes in Britain, were indeed anywhere outside of North and Central America?

All right? Relax? Google Basil Brushes Family Fund shows at two o’clock. At four olock Comic Relief The Truth and Everything Except the Truth. Richard Curtis, co founder of Red Nosed Days, joined by Comic Relief stars as they reveal comic Relief, The Truth and everything except the Truth.

An afternoon of comedy, memories and mishaps. Five o’clock Felicity Awards, The Mother Effing Trilogy. Felicity Award is back with a mother of a show in twenty nineteen. Felicity, like many other people, add a baby, then she run almost three hours of stand up about it. This is it.

I’m intrigued, but three hours that’s long. Six o’clock Comic Relief, Proud every Day with your glorious host Sue Perkins. Eight o’clock Max and Ivan’s the Wrestling. I’ve talked about this on and off. I want to see this professional comedians versus professional wrestlers.

The wrestling is a death defying Edinburgh Comedy Award winning sellout Mega show, the Grandest, most outragious blah blah blah bla blah okay. Calling the action at ringside will be the team of Ashling b Nish Kumar and Greg Jeames. As for the matches, Rosie Daddy Jones will be defending her championship belt, ed the Gambler Gamble will be teaming up with pro wrestler Levi Muir against creators Max and Ivan, and the main event will feature the Raging Horn, Alex Horne, Phil Phil Wang Wang love It, Glenn Moore aka Glenn Morgue and their ringfluencer Abby Clark. Tremendous fun. All right, this is pretty easy for a wonderful Sunday.

We’re doing new faces, more new faces than We’re getting dinner and some beverages and then we’re doing the wrestling and that’ll close out just for laughs. London boy, wish we were actually there. Huh. All right, we got Chris Rock tonight. Hang out with me on Facebook and like I said, I’ll drop a bonus episode at some point.

That is your comedy news for today. Follow the show for free, Apple, Podcast, Spotify, YouTube, wherever you get your shows. All right, see on Facebook. The Shark Deck. Hello, I’m Shunny Mack with your Daily Comedy News. On Monday night, Jimmy Kimmel addressed a report that was in Rolling Stone. According to the report, in twenty eighteen, President Trump asked White House officials to call Disney and demand that Jimmy Kimmel stopped making jokes about Trump. Kimmel said, in other words, President Karen demanded to speak to my manager.

You think the guy that fathered Eric and Don Junior would know how to handle jokes, But I guess not. You know what, maybe this is why Donald Milanny asleep in separate bedrooms. She was laughing too hard at my monologue at night, but really joking aside, this is a blatant abuse of power. I wonder if Fox News, you know they’re always screaming against censoring comedians, will they defend me on this? I doubt it.

Are you excited for Chris Rock’s Big Live Special on Netflix Tomorrow night, Saturday, ten pm Eastern pregame show at nine thirty. Yes. I will react to it in a bonus episode at some point between the end of the special and Monday afternoon. I have some soccer over the weekend I’m not sure when I’m gonna be able to bang this one out, but there will be a bonus episode discussing Chris Rock.

Also, I’d like to invite you to the Facebook hang So Pop on Facebook and the …

I’m going to do some sort of post and we could just chat and watch it together. And if you have some comments, you comment in the comments section. That’s what a comment section is, that’s where comments go. You know, we can comment. So I’ll pop on to Facebook around nine thirty Eastern tomorrow nights and we’ll watch Chris Rock together.

Okay, I’m going to talk about the Chris Rock special here. There are some spoilers for the material, so if you want to skip ahead, bit let me see here. Let me skip ahead about two minutes. Okay, those spoilers. Apparently some of the material that he’s been working out very recently includes Rock saying I rooted for Will Smith my whole life, but the other day I watched Emancipation just so I could watch him getting whipped.

Chris Rock played Baltimore back on February seventeenth, presumably working out the location and the material. At that show, Chris Rock said Will Smith to his selective outrage. People who are in the know know that stuff had nothing to do with me. He’s significantly bigger than me. You’ll never see me on camera with my shirt off.

Will played Muhammad Ali. I played Pooky, and according to the son, Chris rock is keeping his word about never saying Jada Pinkett Smith’s name. That was Will Smith’s request or I keep your name out of your mouth, while Chris Rocky is agreeing to it, referring to her as Will Smith’s wife and his wife. Rock told the crowd at that Baltimore show, we’ve all been cheated on. She hurt him way more than he ever hurt me.

Everyone knows. I’m not spilling any t. I felt so bad for Will I try to call him and give him my condolences. Everybody was calling him a bitch except me. But who does he hit me?

Should be a major comedy event. I’m looking forward to it. Trevor Noah has a new book coming out this fall. Not much is known about it, but publisher One World is billing the novel as a quote gorgeously illustrated and moving modern fable for readers of all ages about forgiveness. Acceptance and the Secret of Solidarity.

Untitled book is said to be evocative of Alice’s adventures in Wonderland and the Little Prince shooting high there Trevor Noah Okay. The Great Outdoors Comedy Festival, usually held in Edmonton Calgary, is expanding to Halifax, and they brought in a big name. He is Jerry Seinfeld. Their release calls Seinfeld quote one of the greatest and most recognizable comedians of all time. I would like to break apart sentences like that now of all time, you know is an awfully long time.

Let’s just casually define all time is starting in nineteen hundred. Is Jerry Seinfeld one of the greatest comedians since nineteen hundred? I’m gonna say yes, no doubt. In the course of my career, I have seen a lot of comedians live. The best two that I’ve seen live.

I never saw George Carlin in person. I never saw Richard Pryor in person. But people that I’ve sat in the audience and watched number one Jerry Seinfeld, Number two, Chris Rock Who’s third best, Johnny Mac I would have to think about that, you know, who was really good and crushed when I saw him Ralphie May. Now am I going to sit here and say Ralphie May third best community of all time? I don’t know if I’m ready to say that, but I’m just racking my brain who I saw in person that like crush crushed, you might have to put a tel in the conversation as well.

That we’ll do that some other day. Jerry Seinfeld will be in Halifax August eleventh. Forbes caught up with Taylor Thomlinson. She’s in Dallas, Texas this weekend five shows at the Majestic Theater. She discussed making the jump to bigger theaters and said, you just have to do everything a lot bigger.

That’s the biggest challenge. At the Comedy Attic in Bloomington, Indiana, you could take two steps in either direction at an improv you can face a bit. But the Chicago Theater is a massive, wide stage and you have to move much more. It’s also different because in some of the rooms, like Chicago, there’s a screen behind you, and that helps. Certain things will work with a screen because the back row can see your facial expressions like in a club.

So thinking about all that and sort of tweaking each performance based on the room you’re in. Is key really interesting there, right, Because I commented earlier in the week that one of the challenges I had watching Kathleen Madigan special is that she didn’t really move. I feel like you got to work the stage a little, right, comedian stops me. Taylor said, I don’t think comedians really need any one thing, or any one opportunity or any one person anymore. I think with podcasts too, everybody has so much control over their career and their voice and finding their people.

I think the Internet has made it so you have so much control over your own career, which ivank is really important and cool. I’ll say you plugging buy me a coffee every day has resulted in a lot of free coffees. Another show here where I didn’t bring one downstairs. I haven’t even finished it yet. I put it in the fridge.

I started it this morning, then I want to work out, and I put it in the fridge and I haven’t gone back to it yet. Here is a bottle of water. I don’t want to shake it too hard because it doesn’t have a camp on it. But if you enjoy what I do here, and you want to support the show. Two a’s one go to buy meacoffee dot com slash Daily Comedy News.

Either there’s some money in the tip jar I buy a coffee. You’ve heard me talk about this every day. You can also become a premium subscriber on Apple Podcasts via Apple podcast and I’ll put the option under your nose. Five bucks a month. First month is free.

If you want to try it out, you can cancel. I’m not offended, but you get the episodes early and you’ll get them ad free. And the ads are back. Did you hear the ads are starting to come back? Yeah, the ads are back.

There’s a plan here telling you appreciate y’all. The numbers have been up again, so it’s been a nice little run here, all right, just for laughs London. Because I have mastered time zones, I’ve been working ahead. So let’s take a look at who’s playing on Saturday. First show is the Fock It Up Comedy Club.

I said, fock foc. I don’t know what you think. I said. The Fuck It Up Comedy Club unapologetically celebrates and centers the perspectives of comedians of color that are not sis men. Fock apparently stands for Fems of Color Comedy Club.

All right, that sounds like it could be a really good show. And that’s a two in the afternoon. Why would we not go three in the afternoon? Craig Robinson in conversation. Now, we supposedly saw Craig Robinson in my little fantasy last night, so we don’t need to see Craig again at four o’clock.

Chapark Course Sandy. The description here ah the nineties, the decade that Chapark was in her twenties, the decade when there was nothing to do but party, and Chapark found herself flying about London with hope in her heart, a tenor in her pocket, and spear knickers in her handbag. She matched the boys pine for pine, and frequently woke up in parts of London she’d never heard of. This is show about how we nineties kids are looking to young people to learn about how to take care of ourselves. That sounds fun too, And that’s at four o’clock, all right, five o’clock Springleaf with James A Castor and nish Kumar undercover cop Pat spring Leaf, more widely known by his covert named James A Castor talks to Nisch Kumar about his upcoming true crime podcast.

At six o’clock, Jessica Fostaq presents Wench, a show about sexy things, awkward, private things, oh no, and a woman trying to sit on the face of time to keep it still right. The Sea’s hot Right. Eight o’clock Ashling b and Friends. Friends include Nish Kumar, Susie Ruffel, and Nebil abduur Shed. Eight thirty Ryan Reynolds, Yeah, that Ryan Reynolds, moderated by Rob Delaney.

You know, I watch Welcome to Wrexham and I see Ryan Reynolds, and I’m like, I don’t think I would enjoy spending time with Ryan Reynolds. I don’t know. My wife is like, you’re insane, but I don’t know, So I’m gonna rule that one out already. Nine o’clock Jordan Gray’s Extra Jordinary Cabaret. Jordan Gray brings some of her favorite pals to join her for an Extra Jordinary cabaret show.

Eleven o’clock. Reggie Watts, all Right, we got a busy day here. Let’s go back to the top and plan out our day. Let’s definitely go to see fock It up at two. Japara Corshandi’s nineties show interested me, So we’ll do that one that was at like five.

Then we’ll grab a beer and some food. Then let’s do Ashley Bed that was like the eight o’clock show, and we can get Reggie Watts late. That’s a pretty solid night of comedy. Huh, too bad we’re not in London. Then we could say up till three in the morning and log into Netflix and watch Chris Rock Live and then really pass out.

US Magazine has twenty five things you don’t know about Jim Gaffigan. The twenty five things we’re provided to US Magazine by Jim Gaffigan. I don’t know if I want to do twenty five. Let’s do ten and then we’ll do some more tomorrow. How about that Number one?

Jim Gaffigan says, I’m more of an eater than a cookery. I like to make meat sauce with spicy peppers that I grow in my own garden. All right. Number two things you didn’t know about Jim Gaffigan. It was embarrassing a little or I understood the science that portrayed on my character’s kids show in Linoleum.

All right, Jim, you plugged your movie. You could have put that a little deeper fine. Number three. One thing fans always say to me on the street is either meow from Supertroopers were hot pocket, or they asked me how do I know you? Number four.

My biggest secret talent is that I could sleep a lot and still be exhausted. Number five. My first car was a Fierro which looked like a wedge of cheese. Six. My favorite item my wardrobe is a fancy robe that my wife got me.

I used to make jokes that I hated robes, but this robe was so nice. When I put it on, I’m like, I should just live in this. Number seven. This one’s good. I think Ellen Degenerous was my celebrity crush growing up.

Number eight, We Are Young reminds me of being in the car and my kids singing along to that song, the version by Fun. Number nine David Copperfield is Jim Gaffigan’s favorite book, and number ten. On a typical Saturday night, you’ll find him on stage doing stand up. I don’t think that’s like something we didn’t know about you, Jim. I think we kind of all knew that.

I’ll skip head to number eleven on Sunday afternoon. You’ll usually find me napping if I’m lucky. Alrighty, so I’ll save the rest for tomorrow. We’ll come back. So you want to make sure you don’t miss the show.

So you’re gonna follow the podcast on Apple Podcasts or Spotify or YouTube, whatever thing is. We’ll meet back here tomorrow. So you’re at McDonald’s and you get your bag and you open your bag. You want to grab a couple of fries or something, and there’s five thousand dollars in it. Yeah, this happened at one guy.

Hi, I’m Johnny Mac, host of five Good News Stories. He gave the money back. Don’t worry.

Who cares? And yes, that was a pony at the supermarket? Five Good News Stories the number five Good News stories, Five good news Stories, the Number five good news stories. Wherever you get your podcasts

The Shark Deck Johnny Mac with your Daily Comedy News. A lot to get to today. Let’s start with Chris Rock Special Saturday night at ten o’clock nad Flix, and they’ve now added a pregame show at a postgame show, the show before the show, that’s the title Little Stream, Beginning at nine thirty Eastern. It’ll kick off with live commentary from comics and messages from Chris Rock’s famous pals. The famous pals include Amy Schumer and Jerry Seinfeld.

So it sounds like somebody at Netflix called in some favors and it’s like, hey, Jerry and Amy, can you jump on zoom for ten seconds? And they said sure. The pre show also includes messages from Centric the Entertainer, Iced Tea, Sarah Silverman, and Paul McCartney. This is I find these things weird. I like Chris Rock, I like Paul McCartney.

I don’t care what Paul McCartney thinks about Chris Rock. Why do you do this? I know why you do this. You do this because of the press release. Believe me, at Famous Plays I used to work, they were all about the press release.

It didn’t even matter if the content was good, if you could put Paul McCartney’s name and the Chris Rock press release and get some idiot with a podcasts basement to talk about it. You get a bonus. My friend, so, I totally understand the game, but the game is stupid. I don’t care what Paul McCartney has to say about Chris Rock, really don’t. I also don’t care what Chris Rock has to say about Paul McCartney.

Your host will be The Daily Show’s Ronnie Ching. Interesting choice of host for the Chris Rock Special.

Also scheduled to appear Arseniel Hall, Dion Cole, and Leslie Jones.

Then the postgame show, which is called The Show After the Show, that’ll be hosted by David Spade and Dana Carvey. Their scheduled guests include JB. Smooth and Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Okay, Chris Rock’s gonna go live at TAN Eastern from Baltimore, Maryland. My plan is I’m going to do this as a bonus episode, and I’m not sure when i’ll get it out.

I’ll possibly stay up late Saturday night and do something Sunday morning. I know I’m out the door pretty early with soccer and I’m home kind of late, so sometimes Sunday and I’ll do a bonus episode that is just about the Chris Rock Special. This is going to be a major event. You may have heard Chris Rock was slapped by Will Smith at last year’s Oscars, so I imagine there will be a lot of eyes on this live special again. It’s a Saturday night, ten o’clock Eastern on Netflix.

The Summit brings together chefs and creators behind some of Austin’s best eats to talk about all things sandwich. Why not.

This all kicks off March tenth, that’s next week, so we’ll have a lot of fun talking about that. Tom Brady made the news TMZ reporting Tom Brady is not pursuing a full blown second career in stand up comedy. Yeah, there was a little rumor going around that Tom Brady was going to put off his Fox Sports career to become a stand up comedian. Now when you read that story, don’t you go that makes no sense at all. That was my reaction to it.

The initial report quoted a source you said Tom was a terrific quarterback, but he needs to toss this idea before it’s too late. The source clai it was part of a plan to win back ex wife Jasell Uh huh, because she’s gonna be like, oh, Tom’s doing stand up The biggest obstacle between them was Jazelle’s complaints about Tom putting football before family, so he decided to show her he’s willing to focus on them before taking the job at Fox. His only goal right now is to get his family back and apparently do stand up comedy. It’s anyway. TMZ says that’s nonsense, But they aren’t talking about doing a roast of Tom Brady.

He’s in talks with Netflix to be the center of a roast that would be titled the Greatest Roast of All Time, and you know what you’ll watch. Hey, if you like what I do here, you can go to buy me a coffee dot com slash Daily Comedy News. I don’t have a coffee with me. I do have this bottle of water, but that’s not what we’re doing here. We’re talking about coffees.

Cheryl bought me two coffees. Cheryl, thank you very much. Cheryl and I have been emailing on the side, and she’s been the inspiration of a topic I talked about yesterday that I’m going to talk about again in a minute. Cheryl, thank you very much. If you like what I do here, go to buy me a coffee dot com slash Daily Comedy News.

I will take your money. I will put it in my bank account. My bank account is tied to my Donuts Chain account. I’ll pick up my phone in the morning, I’ll log into the Donut Chain app. I’ll hit the same order as yesterday, and in that order a large eyed coffee with caramel and almond milk.

I tell you I’m loving cutting back on the dairy and made myself a smoothie yesterday. I put yogurt in it. And I was like half asleep again. So I’m trying to replace the yogurt with the almond milk. But I like my strubberry yogurt in my smoothing.

It’s so hard being old. Zone Age buy milcof dot com slash Daily Comedy News Real Quick Hasan Minhaj I shared a clip of him hosting the Daily Show in the Facebook group Daily Comedy News Podcast Group. I continue to think he feels like the right host for the job. Now he needs a couple of reps. He wasn’t like totally on point on his first installment hosting the Daily Show, but he could easily get there.

I think he’s right for the sentiment of the show. Right vibe, right age. Just feels right to me. But we’ll see what they decide. So that clips on the Facebook group Daily Comedy News Podcast Group.

Also in that group, I’m pulling you, guys. I think I want to do some sort of live chat or live reaction to this Chris Rock thing. I’m thinking maybe doing it in the Facebook group and we could all kind of chat along as we watch. So let me know your thoughts on that, all right. The Jessera laughs.

A London Comedy Festival continues, and because i have educated myself about time zones, I’m working a day in advance. So let’s see who’s playing their Friday seven o’clock Randy field Face. Are you’re familiar with Randy feld Face, He’s a puppet, He’s purple. Since beginning his comedy career in Milbourne, Australia in twenty five, Randy feld Face has written and performed ten solo stand up comedy shows. Were these four comedy specials and played sell out places all across the world.

Randy’s live show is a high energy existential crisis fill of biting observations, rezor sharp crowd work and rapid arm At eight o’clock, The Graham Norton Variety Show featuring Katherine Ryan, Joe I Said, Phil Wang, Jeed Adams, Danny Beard, Sam Ryder and others. At nine o’clock Stamptown hosted by Zach Zucker featuring Sam Campbell, Desire Birch, Michelle Brazier, Flowing Joan and some others. Raunchy, chaotic, and the only show that consistently runs in New York, London and La Stamptown is the Late Night Variety show featuring the best performance from around the world, and then at eleven o’clock Craig Robinson and the Nasty Delicious. I’m not sure what the split of comedy and music is there, but we’re free at eleven o’clock, all right. So at seven o’clock do we go see Randy felt Face or do we go see the Graham Norton Variety Show because we came all the way to London and we should see something British.

I really like Randy felt Face, but I feel like we’ll be able to catch him in Montreal or something. Let’s do Graham Norton at eight o’clock. Now that’s going to box us out from catching Stamptown. So tonight’s play Graham Norton at eight and we’ll see Craig Robinson for the eleven o’clock show. How’s that sound?

And by tonight I mean Friday night? Okay. So yesterday, towards the end of the show, I was talking about the subject of women in comedy and how many women comedians I discuss on the show or not. Then I got some text from my daughter that we’re distracting for good reason. I don’t want to get too much into it.

But something really terrible happened to someone we know, So that’s what happened there. But the topic of women comedians is on my mind and started poking at it. As you know, I’m fascinated with AI chats, so I went to bing and asked being a question, Hey, how many comedians are women? Being said hello? This is being According to one source, eleven point three percent of stand up comedians or women and eighty eight point seven percent are men in the US.

That to me sounds totally off, but being continued and said. Another source gives a similar estimate of twenty six point seven percent women and seventy three point three percent men for comedians in general in the US. For me, no research at all. That feels right. About twenty six percent that feels right to me.

I’ve thought about it more and I think there are a lot of younger women comics, and they tend to be in the alts scene, and most of the comedy websites tend to live in the bro dude Austin kind of comedy scene. So as I researched the show every day, it’s either like the big headliners who’ve been around for a while your Jerry Seinfelds, or your Jim Gaffigans, or your Chris Rocks or that bro dude scene of Crasher Sigora and Rogan and those guys. Although Jim Jeffreys in there. You know that kind of vibe. There’s that style of comedy, and you don’t see much all stuff in the trade.

So it could be that too that is affecting my choices of what I talk about here or not now being sourced zipia dot com slash stand up comedian jobs with a bunch of hyphens in there. I’m not reading the url. I don’t know too much about this website, but they have some demographics here. This is the survey that had only eleven point three percent of comedians being women. So I don’t know how much want to read into this, but for what it’s worth, percentage of stand up comedians by race White fifty seven point four, Hispanic or Latino seventeen point four, Black or African American twelve point eights, unknown six point seven, Asian five point four, average age thirty seven point nine.

I guess gender. Bay gapp for stand up comedian women earn ninety six cents for every dollar earned by men mail income forty nine eight hundred forty one dollars, female income forty seven six thirty seven. I know I’ve got a couple comics. Listen on the show. Hey guys, you guys making forty nine thousand doing stand up might be throwing in some lesser amounts with Jerry Seinfeld’s income in there.

You know, average can be very waited if you have some big numbers in there. But I don’t know now. According to this site, which is zippia dot com, in twenty ten, comedians were almost ninety one percent, with women being nine percent. By twenty twenty one, those numbers eighty eight point six and eleven point three, And it feels a little low. This next thing is cracking me up.

You can go to Zippia dot com zippia dot com and you can make of this next fact what you want. Top industries hiring stand up comedians number one, government, really, next up media, then professional whatever that means, retail and start up. Sixteen percent of stand up comedians working for the government. Okay, And some of these stand up comedian jobs posted on the website include concessions, stand attendant, red Bull arena. So I’m not sure what we’ve learned from that.

Then I went to chat TGP you whatever it is, I always get it wrong. It’s TGP right, TBG Wait. I didn’t even just say letters there leave it in that one Chatbott said it is difficult to give an exact percentage, But according to a twenty nine survey by the Highlywood Reporter, all right, that seems like a legit source. Only ten percent of the top earning comedians in the US were women. Another study by the BBC in twenty seventeen found that women made up only thirteen percent of their performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, one of the largest and most prestigious comedy festivals in the world.

So that thirteen percent seems kind of in the ballpark. I don’t know. I don’t know what the real numbers are other than whatever I computed on yesterday’s podcast. But it’s an interesting topic to me. And that’s your comedy news for today.

Follow show for free on Apple podcast, Spotify YouTube where if you get your shows and a see tomorrow. So you’re at McDonald’s and you get your bag and you open your bag. The Shark Deck. I’m Johnny Mac with your Daily Comedy News. The big news of the week will be Saturday night, ten o’clock Chris Rock Live on Netflix. I might live tweet this thing and we’ll see what happens. Will Smith, forever tied to Chris Rock.

Will was on social media and he shared a TikTok and the other chicktoker says, did you know you can pick up any object, look at it and ask what it thinks of you? So, for example, you can pick up a pen and ask how it sees you or what it thinks of you, and you’ll get an answer in your mind from your intuition. You can ask your car what it thinks of you. You can even ask money what it thinks of you. Will Smith then picks up as Best Actor Oscar Trophy and gives it a puzzled look.

All Righty, Woody Harrelson cause a little controversy on Saturday Night Live. By the way, that was a really bad SNL and you could kind of tell from the get go. James Austin Johnson and the opener did his trump thing and it was fine.

And then Woody Harrelson’s monologue which I’m about to talk about was poor, …

Even the news wasn’t particularly good. So aside from the kerfluffle, which I’ll tell you about in a second, I just thought Woody Harrison’s monologue was bad. I expect better from him. He should be much more natural at that. In his monologue, wood he said, the last time I did SNL was around Thanksgiving twenty nineteen, three years ago.

And you’ll not believe what happened after the show. The next day was a Sunday, as it always is the day after to do Saturday Night Live. That was probably the best joke of the entire night. I went walking in the greatest part of the city, Central Park, laid against a tree, and started to read the craziest script. So the movie goes like this, the biggest drug cartels in the world get together and buy up all the media and all the politicians and force the people in the world to stay locked in their home and people can only come out if they take the cartels drugs and keep taking them over and over.

I do the script away. I mean, who was going to believe that crazy idea of being forced to do drugs? I do that voluntarily all day. Some of the headlines from The Washington Post on SNL, Woody Harrison pushed his popular COVID nineteen conspiracy theory vanity fair. Woody Harrison really blew it on SNL people.

Woody Harrison’s spark controversy by supporting COVID vaccinine conspiracy theory. DMZ Woody Harrison floats COVID vacs conspiracy and from the av Club, Elon Musk praises Woody Harrison’s anti VAXX choke. Pretty bad episode. They did honor Richard Belzer with a title card showing a young Richard Belzer performing stand up. Joe Rogan has caused a stir.

Yes, he has slammed the bald eagle. You know, the sometimes symbol of America, the bald eagle as an effing, soulless, evil creature. Joe Rogan was joking around with Ari Shaffir, Mark Norman, and Shane Gillis. They were discussing how China often leases pand is to US zoos and note now the band is associated with the country. Joe Rogan said, there’s an animal that represents America.

It’s funny that it’s an eagle because eagles are It’s kind of an effing, soulless, evil creature that likes to eat dead fish. Gillis chimed in and said Benjamin Franklin was right. We should have had a turkey. Rogan didn’t used to be a dog. I think at one point it was the dog.

It was like a pit bull. Is that true that America’s national animal was a pit bull at one time? Mark? I’m in joke that it was actually rapper pitbull. When Twitter user wrote tell me you’re a boorish, ignorant American Caucasian mail without telling me you’re a boorish, ignorant American Caucasian mail, I’m not sure how we got from the eagle to that, but okay, I like controversy.

Bert Kreischer was unpardoned my take and asked how long will he live or it? Said I think about that a lot. I wonder. I don’t have a lot of the issues that I know dudes that live my lifestyle have because I work out really hard. Like I’m looking at Shane Gillis last night.

If he lives to be forty two, I’ll be shocked. He’s a bull, But he comes in at like three in the morning, and I’m in bed. I called it early last night. I got in bed at one. Shane gets in bet at three, stays out in the morning.

I’m up at seven in the morning. I’m going to do radio shows. I’m doing interviews. I come back. I have hairstylists coming over to cut everyone’s hair.

I got a chiropractor. We’re making breakfast, we’re running meetings, we’re working social media. Shane still in bed, locked his door. Dudes like him and Mark Norman, they party, but for some reason they rebound. I don’t know what it is.

Back to how long he’ll live. F I had to give you a real number, I got the fifties. Fifties, I’ll be fine. I won’t have any health problem in my fifties. Extes, it’ll be like, oh, we found a polyp.

I think I could make it as a seventy seven clean and I think I’m gonna go from like a shark attack or something. I’m hoping my death surprises people. I can’t go out from something like associated with partying, So why don’t do coke anymore? If I do coke and I have a heart attack, everyone’s gonna be like, woh, we saw that coming. That’s why I don’t do coke.

I want to get like attacked by an animal, or like a plane crash that sounds nice. Murdered by my wife, that’d be cool as f something where they don’t have the obituary ready to go. David Cross will join the upcoming season of The Umbrella Academy. David Cross will play Sy Grossman, who is an upstanding, shy business owner and family man desperate to reconnect with his strange daughter. We’ll stop at nothing to get her back.

BJ Novak was giving some sort of speech and started talking about Mindy Kaling back in their office days. BJ said, we were in love with each other and we were reckless idiots. When the producers realized that our relationship as co writers had jumped every conceivable boundary and became a tumultuous, romantic, toxic, boundaryless mess, they both aside and said, hey, you should have scenes together too. Novac made fun of the references to their relationship in Middy’s next series, The Mindy Project. He described the love interests of Mindy as men who looked weirdly like me.

If you enjoy what I do here. You can go to buy meacoffee dot com slash Daily Comedy News, throw a couple of bucks in the tip jar. I’ll take your money. I go to National don’ts Shane. I’ll get a large iced coffee with caramel and almond milk.

Really enjoying getting off the darium so less sleepy. How old am I? Another way it support the shows go on Apple Podcast. I’ll put the premium subscription option under you five bucks a month to get the episodes early and ad free. You can test drive that for a month for free in itself if you want to try that.

I watched some comedy specials Draffa Zepp, he’s a friend of the podcast, and he went on the Daily Comedy News podcast group on Facebook and he suggested Drew Lynch and it was Friday night and I was like, all right, I’ll watch Drew Lynch. It was funny enough. I got a little long from me to the end, but I was enjoying it. Won’t make the end of the year list, it was funny. I was enjoying it.

I also appreciated Drew Lynch who posted it for free on YouTube with commercials. No problem, no issue. He placed the commercials. That’s right. Other comedians.

Drew Lynch came to the end of a complete thought and then there was a commercial and I went, cool, make some money, bro, happy for you, and then the commercial ended and then we had a new chunk. That’s how you do it, you comedians that just monetize but let things go in the middle of a sentence. Come on, man, it’s not hard. I do it every single day here. I end a sentence on a down inflection and then I leave a break.

It’s not hard, just do that. I also watched Kathleen Madigan’s new special on Amazon and I was thinking about it. So I actually know Kathleen and I’ve been listening to Kathleen’s comedy for twenty something years now, and I was thinking about, all right, what’s bothering me about this one? And she doesn’t move around too much, So as you’re watching the special, you’re just staring at Kathleen and it’s just a woman behind a microphone, not moving left or right, just standing behind a microphone. Not that I’m looking for jump cuts, but I do like my comedian to use the stage a little bit.

And as I thought more about it, because I ran the comedy channels at sis XM. All those years, I’ve listened to a lot of Kathleen’s comedy, but that’s it. I’ve listened to it. I don’t know if I’ve ever watched a Kathleen special. Maybe the previous one, but for the most part, my consumption of her material has been listening to it.

So then I thought about the material and closed my eyes and I’m like, oh, this is Kathleen doing Kathleen things very funny. If you like Kathleen Madigan, you’ll love this new special. Gives it groundbreaking Nope? Will it make the end of the year list, Nope. If you like Kathleen Madigan, here’s Kathleen Madigan doing her thing very nice special this week it’s just for laughs.

London. I would have loved to have been over there, but not going to happen. I finally remembered about the concept of time zones. So what I’m going to do here is I’m going to work a day in advance for the London Festival. This is Thursday Night’s lineup.

It’s not as robust as say Montreal or Moon Tower or any of the bigger festivals, but here are the options for Tonight, Adam Buxton presents the Best of Bug That is the long running sellout BFI music video show. Expect a selection of outs standing videos from the last few years and variously unhinged comments from the online community. Brad Williams is playing, and I think that’s going to be the choice. Luisa o’meilan is also playing. Luisa creates iconic one woman shows.

She was the first comedian to receive a bath to breakthrough for stand up, not the first female comedian, the first. Or we could see Katherine Ryan and friends. Friends include Darren Harriet’s, Kerry Godliman and Ed Gamble. That one’s at nine thirty. Luisa’s show is at eight thirty.

Brad Williams is at seven o’clock. M see now part of me I want to see UK comedians because we came all this way, but the timing’s not going to work out. Let’s do Brad Williams at seven. He is very, very funny, and then we’ll do the Katherine Ryan show at nine thirty.

And then when you’re like, hey, let’s go hang out, I’m gonna be like, we’re i…

You Americans and your four am bar closings. I was over there a couple of years ago. I had a tough time getting a beer at like nine. Genieya Sheer is on tour. Do you know Gina the British Nigerian comedian, Very very funny.

Her tour is called the Woman King of Comedy. Her signature distinctive physical humor, shed light on the plights of being a brit in America, constantly educating Americans on the mere existence of black British people, the absurdity of the American healthcare system, and overt American racism versus passive UK racism. Brooklyn and June, Chicago and Detroit. In July Portland, Which Portland? It doesn’t say, I’m going to guess the Oregon One.

Yes, that’s an August Gina Sheer, the Woman King of Comedy. Quick stop at Gossip Corner. Hey, who is the woman in a bikinis skiing in Whistler, British Columbia. That’s right, it was Chelsea Handler. She posted a social media video of her annual clothing optional birthday ski trip.

She was wearing a broad top of American and Canadian flags and black bikini bottoms, and she pulled off the skiing runs successfully and we’ve got a full listener Maile segment. Today, I heard from Scott Beckett, friend of the show. Scott wrote, John Dude, on your February twenty fourth episode, you read a correction from Tom who said Brian Hamilton is from Ohio, or at least that’s what you said when you spoke Yes, I secreted it up again. Scott points out Ryan Hamilton is not from Canada, He’s not from Ohio. He’s from Idaho.

So I wanted to be sure this time. Titan Ryan Hamilton, Idaho. Here’s what I’ve learned. Place of birth Ashton, which is a city in Fremont County, Idaho, United States. Population was eleven hundred twenty seven at the twenty ten census, and Ashton is part of the Rexburg Micropolitan Statistical Area.

The district is noted for seed potato production and bills itself as the world’s largest seed potato growing area. But I needed to double source this and from the East Idaho News, Ryan Hamilton said, my mother’s side of the family is from Ashton, which is in Idaho. His dad was from southern California, which is not Idaho at all, and his grandfather owned a general variety store in Ashton, which, as you know, is in Idaho, which is where Ryan Hamilton is from. Hamilton remembers being attracted to comedy from an early age. Would read the Sunday paper.

There was a humor column that was syndicated Dave Barry is his name, and I just loved it. I thought, this guy is the greatest job in the world. We didn’t even have a school newspaper at the time, so I called the county paper and asked if I could write a column. They said yeah, So I started writing a column in the newspaper. That led to a job as a sports supporter at local News eights in Idaho, Idaho Falls, which is where everybody Idaho, which is where Ryan Hamilton is from.

He started doing jokes in the nightly sportscast later as a college student at Rick’s College in Rexburg. By the way, how old was he then if he was doing sports before college.

Now, let’s make sure we know where Rix is.

Rix College was a religious two year college in Rexburg, Idaho, which is where Ryan Hamilton is from. Previously known as Rix Normal College. The institution was later renamed as Brigham Young University, dash Idaho. Ryan said, the first time I ever did stand up comedy was for the radio station at Rexburg, again Rexburg in Idaho, which is where Ryan Hamilton is from. He never really thought of comedy as a career.

He was laid off from a pr job he’d gotten after college. He started doing comedy gigs more frequently in Utah, which is not Idaho at all. Then he moved to Seattle, which is not Idaho, and he said, I just wanted to see what it was like to get on stage every night. I was at a competition. I won the industry night.

It was a week’s long competition, but there was one night where people from la which is not in Idaho by the way, came who were from studios. They were looking to represent comedians. I won that night. That solidified me to keep going.

And also got a note from Cheryl and we had a nice email exchange about this, …

So she sent me this note with love, and I find it really interesting, She wrote, of the two hundred and eighty four comedians you mentioned from Wednesday February eighth until Wednesday February twenty second, only fifty nine were women. And she even has a napkin or something that she sent me a picture of with all the check marks of what I was mentioning. I love that you did this. This is so wonderful. So I have divided fifty nine by two eighty four, and that is a twenty point seven seven percentage of me mentioning women.

So let’s go back and look at today just out of curiosity. And I’m doing this on the flight and plan to do this all right, I scrolled back up to the top of the script. Woody Harrelson, Richard Belzer, Joe Rogan. So we’re over three or Shafiir Mark Norman to Shane Gillis over six, Bert Kreisher o for seven, David Crosso for eight, bj Novak, Mindy Kaling one for ten, Drew Lynch and Madigan two for twelve, Genie Is shared three for thirteen, four for fifteen. So what’s four divide to buy fifteen?

Chelsea Handler four for fourteen, Ryan Hamilton, he’s from Idaho twenty six percent. Look at Johnny Mac talks about women all the time. No, so I sat Rosa Cheryl. Here’s what I do when I put together show. I google comedy, then comedian.

Then I check out Twitter, Hollywood Reporter, a v Club, Vulture, the Laugh Button, sometimes the Insterror Bang, you know a bunch of other sites. Then if I don’t have enough stuff, I will google names like Joe Rogan and as Cheryl and I were emailing about names like Joe Rogan or Burke Kreischer, they definitely help with the SEO on more people discover the podcast. Why don’t I talk about women comedians more often? I just don’t see the news. So that’s a discussion in itself.

As I’m doing this rape my kid is texting me with a mini crisis, so I have lost my focus. So I’m just going to wrap this up and try and pick this back up tomorrow. That’s your company needs for today. See you then. Hello.
