Caloroga Shark Media. Hey there, Johnny Mac with your Daily Comedy News. Now, if you listened yesterday, you heard that I was just kind of bothered by how serious the show was yesterday. So I’m gonna just make today comedy comedy, comedy, comedy comedy, and I’m even gonna flip the order. If you listen all the time, you know there’s a rhythm to how I do things.

I’m throwing that out the window today. So let’s start with south By Southwest and see who’s playing tonight. At four o’clock, a recording of Comedy Bang Bang in the history of my career, the only show that I ever walked out of, but I understand a lot of people enjoy Scott Ackerman. We’re told to expect special guests and plenty of surprises and maybe a few familiar places. So that’s at four o’clock for fans of Comedy Bang Bang.

Another live podcast at five o’clock today, it’s The Comedians Comedian with a Parna Nurla. I enjoy a partner a lot at The Comedians. Comedian is Stuart Goldsmith. This is a popular British pod. That was my guess, right, James Adomia, Nico Karney, Megan Gaily, Stuart Goldsmith, Lynn Copletz. At eight pm, the show called an Evening at the Hollywood Improv. This one at Estra’s Folly’s, which is not the Hollywood Improv, but they’re celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of LA’s legendary Hollywood Improv. Your lineup, Doug Benson, Jay Jorden, Opiolig Baju, Melissa Vi and Signor. Let’s listen. I try to make myself feel better by telling myself it’s not a Southern accent thing. It’s an American accent thing, like the idea that any thick regional American accent can sound kind of dumb, not just this one. You know, like if you go to the doctor to get some test results back, Yeah, you don’t want this accent from the doctor. I know you don’t, right, you don’t.

But you also don’t want some mate ball from the Bronx, you know, Like, listen, it is what it is. You got stage four cancer. What are you gonna do? No, no, no, what are you gonna do? I’ll tell you what you’re gonna do.

You’re gonna take emo, You’re gonna take you righty a shit, You’re gonna kick cancers. Actually, I don’t want a Bronx doctor. I take that by ills. Sounds sounds pretty inspiring. Actually.

Nimish Pzil will premiere his new stand up social instant Karma Tuesday, April, first good day for comedy. I don’t think there’s a statement there. I think it’s just a Netflix special and those come out on Tuesday, and this year one April is a Tuesday. Instakarma is Nimishpatel’s first hour Netflix in insta Karma Nimess dives deep into the experience of growing up as a first generation Indian American. Nimesh, the lovable outlaw of his family, breaks down his relationship with his traditional parents, the mischief he causes a kid, and whether or not he’s become a better person now that he’s an adults.

For Reade the Seas, he hasn’t no trailer yet. One of the jokes we’re told, and he obviously tells it better than I do. My parents spent two hundred thousand dollars for me to get a degree in finance. Zero return on that investment. That’s good.

On the Golden Gloves, we have fewer climber shots of Taylor Swift. I’m sorry, never gets old. And I’m picturing a friend of the show, Mike Chisholm from The Letterman Podcast. He likes this kind of humor. This is the Letterman influence on me, where you just beat a joke forever.

It’s funny. Scott Beckett’s throwing things. More gossip Corner, More football gossip Corner. You know who was at Shane Gillis’s SNL. George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey, and Kyle Chusk.

They were all at SNL and they’re like, who are those guys? They sound familiar. They are san Francisco forty nine Ers, also a football team. Kittle went on inster and posted pictures of himself and his forty nine Ers team m It’s on set. Kittle also took a picture with Mike Myers.

More gossip corner. Dave Chappelle hit a basketball game. He was court sided a the UD Arena watching the Dayton Flyers rally from a fourteen point deficit in the second half and the Dayton Flyers beats Saint Louis seventy five sixty seven in the final home game of the season. Chappelle took seats in the opening minutes of the second half. Where was Dave the first half?

Was he in a skybox as he’d come to college basketball games late. Who knows, but we’re told. Dave Chappelle posts for photos with the fans during timeouts. He received applause from the sellout crowd later in the second half when he was shown on the scoreboard. After the game, Dave walked into the tunnel and waited for the University of Dayton players.

He posts for photos with the Flyers and then with Dayton coach Anthony Grant. Chappelle said, I’ll be back too. Coach Grant said, we appreciate you. In the postgame press conference, coach Grant said, it’s not every day you get Dave Chappelle in the house. Let’s keep it light, stuff that normally goes on the second half.

Comedy albums. You like comedy albums. These I didn’t get to yesterday because it was all angsty. In case you missed it, Rachel Pegram’s new album, Silly, Loud and Delightful is out on a Special Thing Records. It was recorded live in front of a late night crowd and Rachel settled everyone in with a neighborly INTROI before getting right to it with her hot takes on top of his including bagfoot and white people.

Now, is that two topics are one? I think it’s one, including bigfoot and white people, and there’s no comma. When I can end my day by five forty five pm, I’m good because that means I get to spend time with my daughter and just be a dad for a while.

It’s the greatest feeling on earth, Schultz said. The second you have a kid, every feeling you have is the hackiest feeling ever. Whenever they laugh, it’s the best laugh in the world. And when you first have a kid, you’re gonna be shocked at how cloche all your feelings are. The second you have a kid, every feeling you have is the hackiest feeling ever. Whenever they laugh, it’s the best laugh in the world. When they smile, you melt, you’d do anything for them.

Good job by the La Times, who asked, we’re in this new era of comedy where more comedians are talking about being parents in today’s world and being open and honest about not only raising them, but the conceiving process, which is the heart of your special What’s it like being so vulnerable, Andrew said, cathartic. It was nice in the beginning. It was nice because there are stages. When I first started writing it, I wasn’t even like writing an hour. I was just kind of I was talking about what was going through.

It was just getting back on stage and taking some time off from the last special.

And then my wife and I were trying to get pregnant.

I remember coming back from Burning Man, I was going to a big birthday party for her mom. But I remember that was when we first started trying. I remember doing it and afterwards being like, it’s probably okay if we don’t get pregnant this time, just because I didn’t know it was in my bloodstream at that point. I mean, I was at Burning Man for a week and then I’m gonna go make a baby. So it didn’t happen that time, and then another month went by, didn’t happen.

Another one went by, didn’t happen. I was like, ooh, is it hard to get pregnant. I couldn’t fathom it was hard. You know, my whole life’s been trying about not get women pregnant. The amount of stress that’d go through and plan bees and all the other crap.

Dallycommercial dot Com caught up with Lewis Black, who I thought was retiring at the end of last year, but he’s still out there on tour. Oh wait, now I could edit this. He he got political here. She up up about using weight loss medications and the Internet being the Internet got mad at her. She thanked her supporters and told her haters she doesn’t owe an explanation to anybody. Zarna said, anything else is just exhausting. I talked about this recently on a Zarnaguard Family podcast episode, not realizing the impact it would have an offering relief to so many. He said, it’s the greatest feeling in the world writing a new joke and having it work. He first considered a comedy career when he was nineteen. He was at a comedian show and tells the story the comedian called me up on stage, just asked me questions and answer the questions honestly. I didn’t try and make jokes. Well, my answers got laughs, and that was the first adrenaline needle where I was like, ah, this feels awesome.

I just started going to open mic nights, driving as little as five minutes and as much as six hours to do three minutes in front of No One, Drunks and other open my comics whoever. He finds that the stage is almost like meditation. It’s where my focus is, it’s where all my intention is. I’m only worried about what’s happening on stage, and that’s a wonderful, beautiful, simplistic feeling. Brad says, I don’t cover politics because I’m not smart enough to do it.

So if anyone’s worried about coming to my show and hearing a rally that’s either four against whatever side they’re on, they’re not going to hear that. But he tells us, I am going to make you go through a whole cavalcade of emotions in the course of an hour and a half, but ultimately I’m gonna make you leave feeling good. And that’s what I want. Hi, I’m Johnny Mac, host of Daily Comedy News. This is the Friday episode. I just wanted to talk to you guys before we get into the episode. As I put the show together, and you’ll hear me say this during the recording. As I put the show together, I was like, ooh, all these stories are really angsty.

I hope this episode doesn’t annoy people. I hope this episode doesn’t turn people off. It gets into politics, it gets into some social issues, and as I explained in the episode, I just put the stories together and I go, Okay, what’s going on today? And you know, sometimes I’ll be like, oh, that can wait till tomorrow, and you know, this could go next week. The show’s getting long.

Let me bump that. You hear me do that all the time live. But as I put the show together say it’s like, oh, this is going to be very angsty. And I hope you know, nobody who listens to the show every day goes away going ah, the show is getting really political. So I actually recorded Friday and Saturday back to back.

Is today’s show angsty? Yeah? It is, is tomorrow’s show angsty? Not at all went out of my way to make tomorrow just fun and light and silly. Today a little serious.

Hey man, what’s up. I’m Johnny Mac with your Daily Comedy News. More from Andrew Schultz. In an interview with The l eight Times, they were curious how Andrew feels a special like life raises the bar for Andrew’s comedy. Great question, Andrew said, I don’t know.

I’m always just trying to do something different. I think that’s the exciting thing for me. Before this special, I was never personal in my comedy at all. Like I didn’t think my life was interesting.

And then talking about this got really exciting.

On stage. I was like, maybe I could tell stories. I never really told stories on stage. I was like, what if I could make this whole story, and then I didn’t want to tell anybody it was a story because I didn’t want there to be one man’s show expectations, and I wanted them to come in thinking like this is hard hitting stand up for an hour and have that expectation, but also see if I could have a story layered onto it. Spoiler part of the special, Andrew jokes about collecting a sample, if you know what I mean.

The only times was curious as you were collecting a sample, did you think there could be a joke there? Andrews said, Yeah. Sometimes you’re in a moment you’re like, oh, this is kind of funny.

And then there’s other parts where you’re just so miserable in the moments you can’t even think about comedy just yet. So I think it was both for sure, new topic. Hey, Andrew, what made you decide facial hair was part of your look? Andrew said, not all of us can grow a beautiful thick beard. Okay, some of us, this is all we got mustache.

I’m no clue. I think this is all I got. To be fair, Andrew warns us, though you can’t go too short. That’s a big no no. Be prepared for a lot of rough looks from people.

Chris de Steffan a hotel Fox News Digital he hasn’t seen American pride on such a large scale since the aftermath of nine to eleven. Chris, and I think our country honestly now, personally, I know that it’s very divided. But I think that and it might be because of exhaustion if you think the other way. I do think we’re going to make a concentrated effort to try to come together a little bit more. Chris said, I mean, you look at this Trump presidency, the very early stages of it versus the last Trump presidency.

I mean, people were trying as much as they could to get anything they could on him, to remove him. People screaming in the streets, so mad the first three months of his presidency. But just like, yeah, there’s issues, people trying, but there’s no like major upheaval because I think people are like, all right, so exhausting, can do it the other way, So why don’t we just try. I feel like we’re unifying more as a nation. There’s more American pride or a country than I remember.

I haven’t felt American pride like this since, honestly, like nine to eleven, like after that, like right after that, there was so much American pride. Everyone came together, and now I feel it again, which I think is good, Chris said. I understand America’s just lines on a map like every other country, where there’s something about having pride as a nation that’s just better for everyone. It’s better for us. I’m not saying America is the only be all end all.

I’m saying it’s good to have pride and where you’re from. Is when I go to other countries, they have pride and where they’re from, and you see their flags flying and they’re proud of something, and that doesn’t mean, hey, you know, we’re number one in Mexico. It’s like, be prideful, be proud to be Mexican, be price to be American, and we can work together. Chris continued. For me, comedians, I think we like to call it as it is, and perception is reality.

I’m in the middle. I’m Chrissy Grayzone. I think even Trump’s efforts like who knows if the executive orders will pass, who knows if we’ll buy Greenland or Candadates is gonna be the fifty first state? Who knows right, could just be wild things he’s saying. But I do think what it’s doing is trying to reassert in an American dominance, which again is just good for our pride as a nation.

The combination of stories today has me a little worried that some of you are gonna go away and be like this show has gotten really political. I just do whatever comes out, and that there’s a couple of stories coming down in the first half here that are also political ish. It’s just the zeitgeist today, So let me just do a palate cleanser here. We’ll do something else. But again, I don’t wake up and be like, I’m gonna put out a political message today.

It’s not what the show is anyway. Friend of the show, Jason Zinneman talk to Bill Burr. Jason writes in The Times, I begin to tell bur there was something he often talks about that resonates with me. When he cut me off Bill went horse ores, He respondedly, back in chuckling in a gray hoodie and jeans. That sentence almost sounds like Norm MacDonald.

Right, hores, he responded, leading back in chuckling at a gray hoodie and jeans. Now, I responded, I’m not talking about hores, fully appreciating how funny it sounds for a New York Times journalists to say this in an interview. Yes, Jason’s in him been writing. No, I’m not talking about whores. Is funny, Jason writes, So, I wanted to talk about male anger, a long time theme of Burr’s stand up.

I won’t drop into a half assed bur impression because I want to catch Jason’s words Here. He’s quoting Burr, who said, let me ask you this, he said, flashing an intense stare. You’ve been with me for an hour. Do I seem like an angry person? Jason writes, I pause.

He did appear a little annoyed when I picked a fight with him about a bit he does about women’s sports. Burr is not the only one who likes messing with people, but alone in conversation, Burr seems like the same guy he is in front of a crowd, only more cerebral than my old mannerd Burs said, there’s a lot of truth in the guy you see on stage where you just looking at me for one side, Jason writes, the side I see here is a guy with anger issues who learned how to control them. Yeah, there’s some sort of uh. I almost suspect it’s a pr campaign. You’re in.

Burr’s got a special out a week from today. You’re gonna see a lot of Burr has grown up and changed his ways and learned how to become a better man. That seems to be the messaging on the mainstreaming of Bill Burr that he became a better man, which is fun. We should all become better people than we were yesterday. I strive to do that, probably like you, there are things in my past that I’m not too proud of.

I don’t have a time machine. All I could do is be better today than yesterday. So I’m not saying Burr’s a jerking face for being a better guy, but there does seem to be some sort of campaign around that messaging is what I’m picking up. Burst said, I want to lose my edge. I don’t want to go through life angry.

And here’s the thing. If you have an edge, you never lose it. I can tap into that whenever I need it. You bark at the other dog and make it go away. I know how to do that, Jason writes.

When I tell him the right wing media figure Ben Shapiro said Bill Burr was going woke, Burr shot back. All he knew is if you put Woke on what I said, he’d make more money. I don’t know who he is, but that guy is a hmm a self enjoying dure. I teach this to my students. I could just read the phrase there.

I mean, the phrase made the New York Times, so it’s not the dirtiest phrase in the world. But sometimes trying to keep it clean makes it a little funnier. And that’s one of the reasons I do the kind of things I do where I won’t say a phrase that made the New York Times in print. Anyway. Bill Burr’s special Drop Dead Years premieres on Hulu March fourteenth.

Now my question for Hulu is if I hit play, am I going to see the entire special? Or with like thirteen minutes to go, is the automation going to cut off the special and I just don’t get to see the closer. I mean, this is a fair question, Hulu. Perhaps your publicists could get back to me and I’ll ask them. Oh, this paired up nicely, and I didn’t do this on purpose.

Remember when Jason Zinnemann wrote, Burr’s not the only one who likes messing with people, someone who liked to mess with people. But Tresea O’Neil. I’ve spoken about this in the past. I did not enjoy the man’s company. His whole thing was messing with you, and great, dude, I’m here to just be a professional broadcaster and knock out this segment that we’re going to do today.

The twelfth annual Patrise o’nil Comedy Benefit Concert is a night of stand up comedy to honor the memory of Patrise O’Neil. This year, performances by Rosebud Baker Greer bourns I’m seeing a lot of buzz on Greer all of a Sudden DC, Benny Bilberr, Tim Dillon, to misch Ptel, Sean Patten, and Rich Voss. It’s at the New York City Center. All tickets seventy five dollars including fees. May eighteenth, Doors open at seven.

Performance at allegedly seven point thirty. Nice nice line up there. Tracy Morgan coming back to NBC and teaming up with Tina Fay in untitled comedy. Tracy Morgan plays a disgraced football player on a mission to rehabilitate his image. Tina Fey is the executive producer on the sitcom.

It’ll be written by thirty Rock colums Robert Carlock and Sean Means. So that is telling me NBC wants to be in the Tina Fay business. Very interesting, Lauren Michaels Snel, You see where I’m going there. They want to be in the Tina Fey business. I mean, it’s a good business to be in, but just interesting because I’m not sure.

In the twenty twenty five twenty twenty six media landscape, b a Tracy Morgan NBC sitcom is you know what the world is into these days? Nothing against Tracy Morgan, It’s just NBC sitcom doesn’t mean what it meant in the nineties, That’s all I’m saying there. Tracy will also star in Paramount Plus is upcoming comedy The Crutch, which is a spinoff from The Neighborhood. Tracy plays Francois Frank Crutchfield aka Crutch, a Harlem widower whose empty nest plans are put on hold after his millennial son and free spirited daughter moved back home. It’s expected to premiere it later this year.

All Right, some of the angsty stuff that had me nervous as I put the show together. Michael Rappaport’s in the news now. Anytime I mentioned Michael Rappaport, and I’ve brought this up in the past, it’s always like an angsty, angry controversy. It’s never like Michael Rappaport went to the children’s hospital, he gave out teddy bears. The nurses said he was the nicest man we ever met.

It’s never that. It’s always something like this from The Daily Wire, Michael rapp Report slammed a leftist Canadian politician for encouraging lawmakers to ban him from doing stand up comedy shows in Canada. Rap Report made his opinions known and a column he wrote for The Free Press, Canada’s new Democrat Party member, Heather McPherson had referenced rap Reports significant criminal history. I’m not familiar with that at all. Is that a thing?

I’m not familiar with that at all. If you asked me, is Michael Rapp Report a criminal? I would say absolutely not. But maybe I’m wrong. I googled the phrase Michael Rapp Report criminal.

I don’t see anything. Maybe I’m forgetting something. I’m gonna type in Michael Rapp Report crime, Google tells me. I’ll admit I have a phobia of anybody wants to kill hert or dehumanized Jews. The irony here is that McPherson, in her post asserted that hate has no place in Canada, except, of course, when hate is directed towards Jews, which Canada apparently has no problem with. He linked that to a report which found quote six hundred and seventy percent increase in anti Semitic incidents in Canada since October seventh, twenty twenty three. Report wrote some more things and then finished with if you’re reading this other a front row seats reserved for you in the New Democrats. That’s a genuine offer.

Another angsty one, this from AM New York. CJ is from Brooklyn and was having a wonderful day in Brooklyn. AM New York tells us she and her husband went to an exciting fundraiser at her son’s school before deciding to finish off a fun day at a local comedy club. Right, they definitely want us to know. The day was wonderful and it was a fun day, AM New York.

Right, she had no idea she’d end the night in tears after comedian on stage performed a set of jokes culminating with one personal attack. I wasn’t there, so I’m just going to admit the comedian’s name. It is not a famous comedian, CJ told AM New York. Most of the comedians were fantastic, at least until a comedian Question took the stage after ten pm and included a routine that focused on Jewish people and the Israeli Hamas war in the Middle East. CJ explains he starts with how Jews must find free Palestine, really confusing becase we love free stuff.

Then he said, I don’t know about you, but a Palestinian has never kept my security deposit. From a comedy standpoint, as a Roman Catholic recording a podcast in a basement, I don’t know what faith this comedian is. I don’t know what background this comedian is. But it’s not like I haven’t heard that sort of joke before, and I don’t know the nuance of the joke. So the quote from the person who went to the show was must find free Palestine really confusing because we love free stuff.

CJ identifies as Jewish, So is the we there the way the joke was told. So is this a Jewish comedian going because we love free stuff? Or is CJ self identifying and was the joke because they love free stuff? That I don’t know that would add some nuance to this story. CJ and their husband said they didn’t find the jokes funny, but understood that it was comedy, and hope did move on to something else.

Okay, But then apparently the comedian brought up the subject of slavery among Jews in history. I don’t have any information about what that part of the set was about and what the materials sounded like. CJ explains, at this point, I was getting visibly upset, almost crying at this point. It’s very sensitive. I’ve dealt with a lot of anti Semitism over the last five hundred and eight or so days.

CJ claims. The comedian then said something, quoting the article here along the lines of and then quoting along the lines of what the comedian said, something like wanting to go kill somewhere babies, this article says. The audience laughed. CJ then broke down in tears and left the club. Edward Ferrell is a spokesperson for the Williamsburg Comedy Club, told AM New York that the venue believes in free speech, especially on a comedy club stage, and will not be taking any action against the comedian.

Williamsburg Comedy Club is a place for comics to take chances. Unfortunately, people occasionally get offended. That’s out of our control. I hear jokes about many issues, topics and groups in the club that I don’t always agree with or laugh at. I will not censor any of the comics who were lucky enough to have on our stage.

A comedian made a joke and I stand by his right to do so. CJ said, I would love an apology from the club. They want to refund our ticket prices, That’s great, but whatever. What I’d really like is for at least one person to see this and not support this comedian, and to warn other Jewish people that if you see this guy’s name on a comedy lineup, don’t go. The comedian is scheduled to do some more appearances, heavy one today.

Apparently Joe had some red Snapper Rihanna with crab and mushroom adobo at the Eater thirty eight. It’s some interesting fact checking here. On Saturday night, Joe Coy told the crowd at the Capitol One Arena that he’s never had Filipino food like that before. Oh but fact check, Purple Patch had previously catered Joe Coy back in twenty twenty two. Hmmm, is Joe Koy lying about what kind of Filipino food he eats?

His SNL drew four point two seventy five million viewers and eight hundred and ninety five thousand viewers in the eighteen to forty nine demo, which I’ve aged out of, compared with the most recent regular episode, which was Timothy Chellamy on January twenty fifth.

That was down thirteen point seven seven percent among total viewers and down thirteen point two eight percent in the demo. However, it was a step up from the sixth most controversial person on Today’s Podcast, Shane Gillis. When Shane hosted in February of twenty four, he was up seven point two percent from the year before, however, with viewers aged eighteen to thirty four down ten and a half percent. Hmmm.

Caloroga Shark Media. Busy one today. Hello, I’m Johnny Mac with your Daily Comedy News. Took me quite a while to put this one together, and I even moved some stuff into the future. So let’s just jump right in.

John Mulaney’s talk show is back next week. Somehow sort of sneaking up on everybody, least knuck up on me. But here it comes. Mulaney said he never wanted to host a talk show, but he has released a trailer. I have to give you the visual here.

So John is standing in a parking lot and we’re seeing the point of view from like a drone. So John is far away, and the discussion is how should the promo be filmed? It’s a little deconstructionist. So again, picture you’re looking down from on high and John Mulaney is somewhere down there in a parking lot. Let’s listen, let me know, let me know when you’re tight enough that I should say the line is something gonna cue me when I just want to be tight enough to saying the line makes sense?

Okay, And Everybody’s Live is on Wednesdays Live. Okay, So I wait. At twenty, I counted to five myself. So just after you call out twenty, I’ll count to five. And as you heard, the abruptly cut to music.

So it’s got you know that Letterman Cone in twelve thirty kind of vibe there, like where he’s going. During the trailer, he puts on a pair of sunglasses like David Caruso, and then takes them off again like David Caruso. Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney’s now what it’s called March twelve. That’ll run for twelve consecutive wednesdays. That I got to hang out with the trivia guys and or play volleyball and then come home and watch mullaney.

It’s a lot of work. I’m just trying to do a podcast here. Oh poor me, I have to come home and watch Netflix for an hour. Life is so hard doing your podcast, John, I feel so bad for you. Richard Kine returns as John mulanie’s mc M’LINI said the first ever celebrity sit down talk show.

There’s absolutely nothing new about what I’m doing. By taking a lot of elements other people have already done and doing them out of order, it feels new, and that’s what’s important. Andrew Schultz said, a big profile in the La Times, a lot of Schultz press. I’ll break that apart for the next oh, probably six days. It’ll take me to get through all this the La Times.

I was curious why Andrew had Trump on his podcast since the podcast is not political in any way at all. And Andrew said, no, not really. What do you think comedy helped get Trump elected? Andrew? Do you mean Trump going on the podcast Times, well, specifically comedy podcast.

Trump went on several shows, including Your Flagrant Podcast as well as Rogan and Theo. Andrew, I have a maybe more humbled than some, which is that I don’t think it influenced the election at all. I think people were going to vote this way no matter what, and I think seeing him on certain podcasts made them feel more comfortable voicing how they were already going to vote. I don’t think very many people were like watching Trump on Mine or Robo or Theo and then flipped on him one hundred percent. It’s just me.

I don’t know if we have that kind of power. But what he might do is make you feel more confident in publicly sharing how you feel about Trump, right because maybe in those situations he feels a little less radioactive. Schultz. I don’t really care about politics. I just care about culture.

But sometimes politics is the reflection of culture. That’s when I start to kind of key in on it. Now the pendulum is swung the other way, so we’re like out of the censorship area. When we’re in a censorship ere comedians are usually the first ones to complain about it because it kind of affects the way we do our thing, and that’s happened throughout history, and usually you get like really prolific comedians that come out of those times, Carlin being one of them. I mean, even Eddie Murphy, you know, like people in prior the way that they would talk about him, like I can’t believe he’s saying these things.

This is so crazy. So I think censorship in a way is kind of good for comedy. But comedians speak about it, and then comedy’s having a boom, and that’s a reflection of the most influential person on the planet, Joe Rowe and being a comedian and loving comedians and putting comedy at the forefront of his interest. There’s also like a social media aspect and where it’s like everybody wants a funny tweet, a funny picture of funny meme. There’s like currency and being funny.

You know, it’s kind of like the perfect storm. Times asked what was the hardest part in prepping for the interview with Trump? Good question, Andrews said, for me, just that I want to understand who he is. So I spoke to some people close to him. I spoke to Dana White for a while, and I spoke to Don Junior for a while, and I just said, tell me a story.

I want personal stories, Like tell me your relationship. Like you don’t have to tell me who he is or who you think he is, Like tell me moments that have happened between you guys. La Times, what was the goal of the Trump interview when you went into it. Did you feel like you accomplished it? Schultz?

The goal was like the goal with every person I sit down with. I don’t want to tooot our own horn on the pod, but I think we got the best interview with a lot of people, specifically because we’re just trying to find out who you are and make you comfortable enough to hang with us. We’re just trying to have the best hang on the internet. That’s it. I hate that I have I hate that I even have to mention this.

It’s so stupid. We offered tons of Democrats to come on, but you know they didn’t. Mark Cuban came on. I’ll say that, and then Cuban was trying to push more Democrats to come on. He’s a big surrogate for Kamala.

Good followup by the light time. Did they give a reason as for their no? Andrew? I think they’re in a situation where they’re playing like a little bit of prevent defense. And I think it’s a tricky thing.

Again, I speak about these things culturally. I don’t really understand politics, but I can just understand the people’s reaction to things. I think Americans like risk. We like people who are going to take a risk. I think that they were seduced by Bernie Sanders because he looked like he was taking risks.

He was out there like f the billionaires, f these big corporations, they’re taking your money. I want to get your money back, and all of us were like, yo, he’s gonna get killed, like this guy’s fire. I think that’s the tricky thing for the Democrats. They could win this so easily if they made this about class. If they made it a class war, they’d win in a heartbeat.

It’s so easy. But it seems like they’re not willing to do that because I think they have very wealthy people donating a lot of money to them. They don’t want to ruffle those feathers. So I have to make it about identity politics because it’s the only other thing they would win in a heartbeat if they mad it about class. I think you need a young Bernie.

Look at AOC again. I don’t care what you think about her politics, but there are people in her district voted for her and Trump, and I think that’s because people see her as working class and actually want to help the working class, regardless if you think your philosophy is right about it. He talked about the Brilliant Idiots podcast he does with Charlamagne. Dude. It’s the best.

We’ve been doing this over for ten years and now he’s always been this crazy superstar and maybe I’ve gotten a little bit bigger. But then you can see the political websites looking or stuff and basically watching the pod and they’re like clipping it. But the thing I like about it is here we are these guys that like we might disagree in terms of politics about some things, we’re friends for over a decade. It’s just the proof that we don’t need America to be so divided. We hate each other and we’re about to fight, but we can actually be best friends and we could talk smack in, you know, do whatever we’ve been doing for ten years.

In the podcast, while also disagreeing slightly, really great stuff there. The Hollywood Reporter had a similar interview, again, how much time have I spent on Andrew? Ready? I want to keep moving, but this leads into what I want to talk about next. Andrew talked about how he approached his new special and said, I’ve never been personal and I’ve never told stories.

I had to learn what a story was. I read all these books about storytelling, you name it, I read it, and I even bought these cards from Instagram with like storytelling tactics. I wanted to figure out what makes this stuff work? Why are some stories good? Why are some boring?

And it’s the thing unfolded. I was like, Okay, what if I just told one story? But I never wanted to tell anybody it was one story because I didn’t want the one man show expectation. So that leads me to my commentary. I had some time the other night and I was like, oh, I’m hearing good things about Andrew Schultz special.

Let me watch it. And I started to play it, and the note I had before I saw this Hollywood Reporter interview was I didn’t like the storytelling. It didn’t work for me. His opening joke is, okay, it is about Chicago. I won’t spoil it, but I personally have been making that joke since the nineties, at least half of it, and the other half since the early part of this century.

So not an original joke. He did have a good tag on it. Again, I don’t want to spoil it. If you saw it, it involved Chicago. That joke I thought was really good.

But then when he got into the storytelling, I just I didn’t care. Just it didn’t hook me. I lasted seven minutes, which is usually when my comedy special Spidey sense kicks in. Again. Maybe the last fifty three minutes or whatever it is is awesome, that’s not my problem.

I’m a dude in a chair with her remote and I fum board. I’m out. So I was like, all right, let me watch some comedy specials since I blocked out the time. Next, I clicked on rosebud Baker’s special. I was excited about that one, and she lost me really early.

If you’re not familiar with that special, the gimmick is she recorded some of it while pregnant and some of it after having the baby. And the way it’s cut, it’s going back and forth like line by line. So you’re watching it and she’s pregnant, and then the next scene she’s not pregnant, and then she’s pregnant again, and then she’s not pregnant again, and my brain couldn’t handle it, and I’m like, I’m out. Did not last long at all. I’m like, all right, what else is out there?

Oh? Yeah, Lisa Traeger had a special Netflix put in front of me. I clicked on that. I liked her energy a lot. I thought it was fun.

I am a comedy snob. In case you can’t tell, is I’m just hating on everything this morning. But I did think it was fun. I think at its core it was fine. It won’t make my end of the year list.

It’s just fine. It’s just another comedy special. It’s fine. But I did like her energy a lot, and I’m like, all right, let me keep going. Let me head over to Amazon and see this George Lopez special that, as far as I could tell, George Lopez did no promotion for Can I tell you here’s the word I’m using to describe it, horrific, Like George, what are you doing?

It’s kind of like George taking a victory lap. But how about some jokes? Dude, not good at all? And I bailed and I’m like, all right, surely somebody must have done a good comedy special I could watch. I went over to Hulu and Hilarious Christa Stefano was on, and the word I’m gonna use hack.

It’s also tonally off brand for Hulu if I understand the hilarious brand, and maybe I don’t, and maybe the publicist could get in touch with me and tell me what it is. But if Christa Stefano special was on Fox Nation, I’d be like, yeah, okay, this makes sense, and I am saying that for reasons stay with me for the rest of the podcast. But on Hulu it was just kind of weird and off vibe. It felt very Fox and also the jokes are ha, So I went, oh, for five. Now you can say this podcast sucks, because it probably does.

You could say I have no idea what I’m talking about, and I probably don’t. But one dude sitting in a comfy chair with a remote who admits to being a comedy snob, oh for five. Chris de Stefano has been talking a lot lately with Fox News Digital. I see him coming up every day on their site. Chris told Fox News Digital that men competing in women’s sports was a humongous issue for voters and himself at the twenty four election.

Chris believes listing men competing in women’s sports was the catalyst for many people abandoning the Democratic Party in twenty four. Quoting Chris, I think also too, just like a big, big, big, big big thing five bigs was for all of us, for certain comedians and all that. I think the trans women and sports thing was a humongous thing for voters because the you know, left wanted to go with the narrative that people are anti trans and people don’t listen. There are people who hate every group, for sure. I’ve never met someone who wants to physically hurt someone because they’re trans.

I think, like, especially in New York. I think trans people are welcome, quoting Chris. I’m all for anybody’s time on this planet to be as useful as they want it to be and as pleasurable as they want it to be. I mean, you’re only gonna live once. But I think when the Democrats came out and we’re like championing you know, trans females and sports, you forgot about like the actual women, and you forgot about like, hey, I have daughters, Like I don’t want to be competing against someone who’s born in Man just because they do have physiological advantages.

The Stefano proposed creating an all trans league, quoting Chris, I want a trans league, for sure. I would love that. But I want biological women to play against biological women, and men to play against men, and trans people to play with trans people. We’re all for that. Chris also felt that many people traditionally aligned with the Democratic Party, like Joe Rogan, supported many of the party’s causes, but were completely disaffected by the party’s willingness to support men playing in women’s sports, quoting Chris, again, I think specifically on why a guy like Joe Rogan, and again I don’t know, I’ve never asked Joe about this, but what I saw was this shift when we were saying, hey, wait, this is crazy.

I was with some of the other stuff, but like, you can’t be serious about this. Oh my, I just checked the clock. I gonna have a long one today. Wow. I want to talk about George Lopez, his recent Amazon specials being just decribed by some people as horrific.

Well, he’s getting into a new business. He has partnered with Truly Original, a production company behind such series as The Real Housewives of Atlanta and inc. Master. George and those guys are going to develop a number of unscripted projects that The first is a feature documentary about Charlie Murphy. It is called Darkness The Charlie Murphy Story.

It will tell the story of Charlie Murphy, who died in twenty seventeen from leukemia at age fifty seven. Vulture had caught up with Bill Burr. He’s in Glengarry Glenn Ross, and Bill said, I get this guy, this good guy underneath, but he just sw his mouth and rousey, which I did too, And also I think he’s right. Doesn’t have to be that way. It’s funny that was written a long time ago, showing the direction things are going in.

Have people just continue to squeeze people beneath them, and how they get satisfaction out of that. A lot of this new Robert Baronet’s just wildly out of control in every business.

Meanwhile, we’re selling crappy land.

That’s the other thing I like about it. It’s a human thing to act righteous when you’re not righteous. Bill talked about the arts of giving grief to those you love, giving craps an art because you got to feel love underneath it. That’s always out of communicator with people as far as telling them and I like them, teasing them a little bit, hope they’re going to do it back to me. These characters are like a bunch of comedians giving each other crap.

And then there’s the top comic. When human beings get upset, they say the exact opposite. I wouldn’t be like I actually really liked you, so when you say that to me, that really hurts me. It’s funny. His play was written forty years ago and manage still not allowed to say that.

It’s beyond uncomfortable, which is why we communicate in the short bursts of insults that we do all right getting along here. Let me bounce a couple things, But I do want to tell you that JR. Da Guzman’s special is out today on the eight hundred to pound Guerrilla YouTube channel, and the special, titled I’m Your Son, Papa Jr. De Guzman shares and sings the true stories of his Filipino American upbringing, filled with laughter, love, and the complexities of family life. From R and B songs about Asian masculinity and representation to smooth, sultry songs about division in America.

This special will heal you and heal the world. My phone is blowing up. Apparently the New York Marathon did you Get in? Announcement is happening at this hour. I haven’t heard one way or another.

I’m texting with a friend saying, I kind of hope I got to know, because if you get a yes, then you actually have to train for the thing and do it. If you get to know, it’s like, ah, you know I would have ran them, Aratha, but you know they won’t. Levy Ah. There’s a series out today on Hulu is called Deli Boys. Seeing some good buzz on it.

The av Club wrote, like any good sitcom and need some room to grow. Although it is solid bones from the get go, the instant hook is spoilery, but two Pakistani American brothers find themselves running a convenience store chain, only to learn that the chain is actually a front to smuggle drugs. Raj and Meir are thrust into the mafia. Underworld. Show runner Michelle Nader grew up in South Philly and said, I’m not from the rich side of Philly.

I’m from South Philly. So the sort of underbelly of Phillies my world. I think we were attracted to that and what that looked like beyond the doors of the Delhi, what’s really going on? I think Philly has that mystery to it. Interestingly enough, all ten episodes were filmed in Chicago.

We’ll talk about that in a second. The series is set in South Philadelphia’s Gray’s Ferry neighborhood, a locale inspired by Serious. Creator Abdullah Sayid said remembered a story I went to a party when I was at Temple. Some friends had moved into a house in South Philly. We went down there and it was a very dilapidated and dangerous neighborhood.

We were like you sure you guys want to live here. Somebody then told me about Grace Ferry, the Forgotten Bottom. That name always stayed with me. It felt like a place where you could have a business that’s a front and nobody would notice. Now Block Club Chicago, they cover Chicago and explain Chicago has stood in for many cities in the history of film and TV.

They were curious why Deli Boys filmed in Chicago. Executive producer Jenny Conner explained the tax break. Chicago’s a very friendly place to film. I’m making a joke, but really thank God for that tax break. Sayid said, it was very important to us that the show looks like Philly and Chicago really does, not just visually but vibe wise.

That’s a working class city that loves its sports teams and very down to earth. Deli Boys out today on Hulu. I supposedly all ten episodes, but it’s Hulu. You know, you might get into like you might watch the first nine and a half and they’re like, oh, sorry, the stream ended who has been known to do that. I am still furious about that whole Oscars thing.

Last week, Elon posted on x that he would talk to John Stewart on air if his interview would premiere unedited. Now interesting that he chose premiere great because we could premiere it at three am and then mix some minutes.

But that’s not what they’re going to do. John Stewart began his monologue by reminding his audience that he made a bit of a critique of Elon Musk’s Department of Government efficiency. So we can do whatever there if we want, as long as we want as long as we wrap before the new season of South Park, which comes out in like May or June of twenty twenty six. So I’m game. You know, if you Tomy Conan was hosting next year, great, But I kind of in the back of my mind feel like Jimmy Kimble should be hosting the Oscars. A great job, Jimmy, You’ve made a connection in my brain between you and the Oscars. You’ve done a fine job. So interesting choice by south By Southwest to announce their comedy lineup in a very busy weekend with Shane Gillis hosting Saturday Night Live and the Oscars kind of taking all the oxygen out of the rooms.

Don’t Tell Comedy is doing their first ever roster of Don’t Tell Comedy All Stars.

Now. Is that a secret show or are you telling us where it is? Because that’s not what Don’t Tell Comedy is. That would be Told Comedy. The Allegian Theater, the center of LA’s Bursioning Clown movement, brings their flavor of experimental, outrageous performances to the Comedy Festival.

Alesia Knight’s eight c X is a variety show featuring upon an Intrilla, Natalie Palamedes and other special talents. Well you got a great one too. They’re off the top of the roster I would definitely go see that. Skank Fest going a little mainstream here, teaming up with south By for the festival mashup showcase Southwest skank Fest. You live long enough, everything becomes establishment.

Wow skank Fest, You guys are now sponsored thing at south By Southwest Wow. Okay. Southwest gang Fest will feature Jode Rosa, Samjay, Bonnie McFarlane and Sean Patton. That’s a good lineup. Hey, it apmosed to everybody, guys, enjoy the money while you can.

Joe Rosa will host The Street Meet, a comedic celebration of food trucks, grease pits and sandwich shops. Love it Joe. We’ll talk about food with creators of some of the country’s greatest common cuisine and a comic or two, which reminds me, I’m hungry. I’m recording this much later than I usually do because I recorded with Mike Chisholm for The Letterman podcast earlier, and I’m running about two hours late, and I gotta go have a sandwich myself. Oh, and Robert Smigel’s down there.

That means another week of me trying to book Robert Smigel on the show and no one getting back to me. Okay, at least he’s like outdoing stuff and not just ignoring me. I can understand if you’re not checking your email while you’re writing the oscars and hanging out at South By Eye, get it. Just want to promote the benefit, that’s all. Because the first I heard about it was when I put the show together on Monday. And I’ll remind you I put this show together every single day. Now, maybe I’m terrible at it, but you know I do google the words comedy and comedian and go ten pages deep on both searches, and this never came up. So maybe it’s the publicist not me. Ponchi today and I’m in a good mood.

The Knockouts Comedy Festival, which I think is really cool and I would love to talk about it, has kicked off and runs through Saturday with over fifty shows, a dozens of venues in and around at New York City. Comedians include Phoebe Robinson, Lisa Treeger, Emma Willman, Gina Brillan, as well as plenty of local favorites. The Knockouts Women Comedy Festival was born out of a desire to celebrate and amplify the voices of women in comedy and is actively inclusive to those marginalized and underrepresented in the industry, including trans, non binary, and gender fluid comedians of all backgrounds. The co creators put out a statement that said, we believe it’s essential to create spaces where women can sh showcase their talents, share their perspectives, and support one another in a traditionally male dominated field. By hosting the festival during Women’s History Month, we honor the achievements of women throughout history while also highlighting the contributions of contemporary female comedians.

We missed the opening night. They had Knockouts of the week, two stand up comedy shows featuring ten up and comers. Sounds like a really good festival. A nice job on that, Yeah, send me press release. I’ll talk about you in case you missed it.

Because I changed the schedule instead of putting on episode at three oh five am Monday. I actually put it out Sunday night during the Oscars because I figured it’s done and it’s close enough to three in the morning, let me just hit publish on this. But in it, I gave a great review to Shane Gillis’s SNL. So that’s the Sunday Night episode in the feed. That should be the episode before the Mike Chisholm episode.

In case you’re catching up anyway, Bowen Yang is shutting down those rumors that he was responsible for Shane Gillis being fired from SNL. There was a recent Instagram post promoting the show. Someone named Michelle called Shane a bigger man to come host f being unfairly ditched, and alleged that Boone Yang, whom she referred to as a whiny queen, had bitched him off the show. This Michelle person wrote, SNL fired him as a hater. He’s not.

He’s very kind and a smart humor and stands up to bullying. Bow and Yang heard about the comment and replied and noted that Bowen wrote the sketch you were a background actor in. It appears the commenter did appear in a twenty nineteen sketch, Isn’t This fun? That sketch was called Fashion Coward. That sketch features host Emma Stone, Kate McKinnon, and Adye Bryant.

This sketch acts as a fake commercial for a clothing store that sells bland clothing for women. Bowen, Yang, Shane Gillis, and Chloe Feynman were the newly added cast members in twenty eighteen. Shane was dropped after he came under fire last year. Bowen told Variety, I think he and I have done enough things in our careers now to really not have that be the definitive beginning or the thing that casts a Paul over everything else that we do going forward and from Late night er Any excited for Mulaney’s late night show, latenighter dot Com reports the ticket requests are opened through a website one Iota, so the number one, Iota, number one, Iota so one, and then Iota. The recordings are eight consecutive wednesdays starting March twelfth.

Wow, that’s like next week in April thirtieth. That’s right, the show is out next week. I have that in the back of my mind. I have that in the calendar. Absolutely, it’s next week.

The tapings list a five thirty pm audience load in time, with the show scheduled to go live on Netflix at ten eastern seven West. Conan is getting nothing but good reviews. I haven’t seen anything negative about Conan at all, The Independent wrote, for the first time in years, the Oscars seemed to actually enjoy themselves. Sunday ceremony was a celebratory affair and necessary lick of positivity for a city that had weathered destructive wildfires in recent weeks. A brilliant turn by O’Brien and a raft of genuinely very good winners made this the best Oscars in recent history.

My personal favorite in recent history was Will Smith slapping Chris Rock. That was pretty good for the download numbers. I’m mad every time somebody doesn’t get smacked. Sorry, I’m just telling you. I got a podcast to do here and did a good job.

Doesn’t move the numbers. The Atlantic Road. Conan O’Brien understood the assignment. The Oscars host was silly and serious by turns, and delightfully in control of the evening. Yep, well said as soon as Conan O’Brien strode onto the Oscar stage, Sunday night.

He looked like he belonged there. He was self deprecating, telling the crowd to sit down before he continued, even though no one was standing. I’m still mad at Hulu. Did you catch this? So there we are.

Some of us are watching Hulu joining the Oscars, and right in the middle of Best Actress nominees, the screen goes off and we get a thing saying the telecast has concluded, and it never came back on. I don’t know Hulu. When I watch the Oscars, I kind of want to see Best Actress and Best Picture. It’s sort of a big deal. You guys screwed the pooch on that one bad job out of you.

Caloroga Shark Media. Hiley hoo. I’m Johnny Mac with your Daily Comedy News bonus edition. As promised, I pained Mike Chisholm from The Letterman Podcast to get him on here, and I have one question for Mike and then I’m gonna let him go. Mike, are you prepared to admit to my fans, your fans, Letterman fans, Conan fans, that Conan O’Brien is better at hosting the Oscars than David Letterman.

Man, not as only is he better at hosting than David Letterman, I would say that he is better than hosting than only the upper echelon of best hosts of all time. Conan absolutely knocked it out of the park last night. Oh my god, what a great Oscars that was. I love that you didn’t hesitate at all, because we all know we both love Dave. But it is what it is.

But yeah, Conan was fantastic. I see a note here. This is from comedian Jeff Tweety. I just saw this on threads. He wrote, Conan my be the most beloved crossover comedian of the last thirty years.

You talk about a guy who crushes it with anti comedy, comedy snobs, yep and traditional club stand up fans. Has no real controversies except ones where he’s screwed over by Jay Leno paraphrasing, seamlessly transitioned from TV to full time podcasting and remained hugely relevant. Yeah, yeah, unbelievable. What a great job. Yeah, it was.

It was like he took all of the best moments that he remembered from the Oscars that he enjoyed mixed in his not just his brand of comedy, because I felt Smigel, I felt different elements of like. It was very much a Conan O’Brien Oscars, there’s no question, but where when Dave hosted back in the day, he would take his sensibility and even some of his bits and kept them the way that they were. Conan took things sensibility and again even I would say a couple of the things that happened would be Conan bits, but he elevated them and he really morphed them for that audience so well. And again it was very much a Conan O’Brien Oscars, but also broad enough that the pop culture appeal of it was just absolutely flawless. As far as I’m concerned it was very traditional.

On Saturday’s episode, in my Oscar’s preview, I picked up on an interview where Conan was talking about how he grew up watching the Oscars and watching the host of the past, and I noticed at one point, pretty early in the show, he had that old timey rhythm of you do a chapter, you do a segment, you switch topics, for example, Yeah, and how about conclave joke, audience reacts, pause, and then there’s an aura and you do another chuck. It’s almost the same rhythm as a roast where you goo and Mike Chisholm is here. Hey, he’s wearing his letterman jacket. That’s a shock hot. That’s not a mean joke, it’s just a joke.

And I felt like he had that old Bob Hope rhythm and Hope gets killed for the work he did after age eighty. People go back and watch Bob Hope clips, please. He had the classic Oscars host rhythm. Yeah no, no, no, that rhythm that he had completely the same rhythm that Conan fans have come to the thing about it is, it’s it’s every bit his rhythm as well. But you’re you’re exactly right the way that he would and again you’re right again.

And also nothing is me. I’m not trying to just agree with everything that you just said, but it’s all perfectly relevant. The mood of it was so light. He wasn’t mean about things, like even the opening that he did with the Substance with to be moore that that is such a perfect Conan moment. I remember when he owsted the Emmys and he came through the ceiling of the office and he was in twenty four and he was in when he came in when they started the show with a couple of things, the video montage and then a couple other but the Conan part where he was mocking or doing a mock up or a parody of the substance.

I was expecting that he might do that throughout the show for all of the movies but he all the Best Picture movies, but he didn’t. But he did give homage to a lot of them, very smartly and very uniquely throughout the show. I just yeah, again, I’m gushing all over this thing. But I’m gonna watch it again. I’m gonna go back and watch Power the Oscars again.

It was so good. One of the things I jotted down. I did a substack post this morning, mainly commenting on Hulu screwing the pooch. So if you didn’t catch up on that, Hulu cut out during the Best Actress Award and never came back. So yeah, I had a hop on my ship and head to International Waters to see best pictures, if you know what I’m saying.

But it was like, come on, Hulu, what are you doing. But as part of the substack I mentioned I don’t have much to say about Conan, and that is high praise because the gig and you and I have talked about what the gig is and the seacrest of it all. The gig is once you get past the opening montage and you’ve done your monologue and you’ve done whatever the big stunt is at the beginning. From there on, it’s keep the show moving and stay out of the way. If you and I are having a conversation right now about Conan O’Brien and he did this, and he did that, and I did that, other than just wow, that was really good, really enjoyed it, that’s the wrong conversation to have.

At the beginning of his monologue, there was a part where maybe not at the very beginning, he had a couple jokes out of the way the police sit down at the beginning that was really funny. But there was a part where he was walking around and he even said, I am walking around the stage to show you that I have control of it. It’s almost like he took a note from somebody who might have directed one of these things for a long, long period of time and told him that, and he just goes around and he says, yes, this is what I’m doing. As soon as he did that, I’m like, Oh, this is gonna be that perfect blend of exactly what you’re talking about. He’s doing what we’re expecting him to do, but now he is taking control of the ship and gonna take us for a ride at the same time, and applied the pressure of that pedal perfectly.

He didn’t do anything to overshadow it. All he did was accentuated. So let’s walk through it chronologically, because I think there was a point where his comfort level set in and when he was prancing the stage. I don’t think we were there yet. Yeah, the opening clip the substance parody very conan.

As you suggest, you seem to like it. I didn’t think it landed, don’t. I don’t hate it. I’m not gonna kick a can about it, but I don’t think it landed. I don’t know if it landed or not, but a ditch.

First off, it did for me, but I’m a Conan fan, and I think that needless to say. It may not have landed for the pop culture of everybody else, but it did show. This is a very Conan O’Brien joke, very consistent with his stuff with the Emmys and whatnot. But to me, that’s where you knew that this was gonna have his sensibility all over this program. I’ll compare this performance to pitching a baseball game.

I feel like he may have walked the first batter and went two and zero on the next guy, and I was getting a little nervous, and then he settled in and found his fastball and just crushed it. Because my next note here is there was an early joke about a complete unknown and two other things rhythm of three typical joke, and I could I knew the joke was coming once he said a complete unknown. Now I thought the punchline was gonna be. That’s what they said about me back in ninety four, but I still could tell that it was going to be a joke about him and a bit telegraphed, and at that point that we’re very early here, I was like, ooh, this could be rough because the audience hadn’t settled in yet. A complete unknown, a real a real pain.

They’ll turn out too. These are just some of the names I was called on the red carpet. Yeah. No, there was that nervous energy and the uncertainty, and you’re right, there was a settling. There was a settling in point.

I’ll tell you this. The part where I got really excited was the John Lithgow gag. It seems we’re not gonna pull anybody off the stage, where he’s gonna show John with a disappointed look in the audience, pointing it out, doing it perfectly. That also to me very on brand for Conan, and to me that got the audience excited as well. The way that he would interact with people in the audience.

I think that’s always a hallmark that does transcend host a host playing with people in the audience, and many times you might want to be playing with the biggest movie stars and all of that sort of stuff. Conan having fun with John lithgowt to me was a lot of fun. Let me sidebar there. One of the notes I had for the telecast was they did a great job. It was celebrities that I say that I live on old Man Mountain.

I’m fifty five years old. These were celebrities that even I’ve heard of. They but they were current stars. It wasn’t like, oh yeah, they brought out Mark Campbell from nineteen seventy seven, who they later did you know? It was today’s stars, today’s musicians, not quote unquote my people.

It felt very modern. I have the highest compliments for the production. I’ll jump wayhead to the end when they honored Quincy Jones, So how do we honor Quincy Jones? And I thought picking a song from The Wiz was brilliant? High five whoever thought of that?

Because it ties the Wiz to Wicked, which ties the past to today, and the Whiz is like almost fifty years old now, which is differently scary. Just a really modern feel honoring the past being tied to the past. But an oscars for twenty twenty five. My wife and I we talked at length about Wicked because my wife adores Wicked. This is one of those movies that we saw it twice in the theater and then the moment the digital came out, and my wife was just so excited that they started the show with Somewhere over the Rainbow.

All of the Wizard of Oz connections throughout this telecast I thought was brilliant, and the Wiz. I just wish they would have mentioned Michael Jackson’s name to me, that’s the uh, you know, the script for Oprah and for Whoopy talking about all the different artists that he worked with, But they didn’t mention Michael Jackson’s name, but yet they said he was the helm of we are the world. Didn’t mention Michael’s name, but then they showed the Wiz, which, again, you’re right, perfect tie in there. They’re a better way to tie him to the relevancy of this year than that. But I thought it was very, very safe.

It was a very safe copy that was given to those ladies not to mention Michael Jackson’s name, even though Quincy Jones of course, always will be tied to that body of work as well. That being said, yeah, absolutely there was Wicked was all over this thing. Again, this is what I want to know is how much input does Conan and his team get to come in and they get to callborate with this institution that’s been around forever, does Conan get does he get to say how hard they’re going to press the wicked pedal versus say some of the other pedals that he could press. I’m super curious about that. After I let Mike go, I went upstairs to grab an iced coffee with caramel mil because you know, and I realized I didn’t answer his question about the production of it all, and I do want to just address that because I feel like I have something to say about it.

I’ve produced a few things in my life, nothing on the scale of the Oscars, but I’ve produced a few things. As for Conan’s involvement with the rest of the show, in my experience as somebody who’s produced things on and off for thirty years, what would happen is, uh, so you’ve got a host lined up and then on the suits end, So I’ll put myself on the suit’s end. I would grab my team and start spitballing. Okay, what could we do with host who’s got some ideas? And we would come up with a million ideas, and then the leader of the project, me would contact the talents principal person.

So in this case, if I’m producing the Oscars, I’ve got my team, We’re bouncing some ideas, and now I’m going to whoever Conan’s guy or gal is and saying, hey, do you think Conan would be into any of this? That person, having the position of being Conan’s guy or gal, knows how Conan thinks and is like, no, he would never do that. He might be into that, let me bounce it off him.

And then then that person would go to the host, get some feedback, and then c…

I thought the thing with the basketball was kind of fun, and there’s no way he wants to do the thing about geopolitics.

And then from there you would shape the show together.

But that’s my experience. Anyway, back into Mike. Does Conan get does he get to say how hard they’re going to press the wicked pedal versus say some of the other pedals that he could press. I’m super curious about that. Me and Robert Morton are gonna be talking about this.

I was Mexicano, no great messaging him throughout the telecats. I said, if you’ve been talking to Jeff Ross and he said all day? And I was like, oh gosh, I want to know more about those conversations because I really want to know how much input these guys had into the substance of the show, rather than just the acides between the substance that was there. I want to know how much collaboration was there. You know, you get better, guess I get you.

I don’t know if I don’t know if we’re gonna make it a letter in podcast or now we’re doing a phone call and we’re gonna talk about it. But he may he may be coming on for that. But yeah, Jeff Rock Spigel all over this thing. Well, yeah, the chronological thing I think is a good idea. But I want to go back to that the film that they did trying to teach people that the communal streaming service going to the movie theater.

I loved that video so much. I didn’t know if that was the Smigel piece. I felt like it might have been, but again, feels like a cone and piece, but elevated and pop culturized for that audience. I love that segment. No, everything just fantastic.

All right, So going down my chronological so at some point he prancis the stage. Yeah, we’ve covered that. I felt when he started bantering with Timothy Shalla may is when he got comfortable, and then physically, I felt like Conan knew he had the room, now that the room had his back, that this wasn’t going to be Letterman two or whatever other oscars we want to talk about. He knew he had the room. So now he’s more confident and he’s now he’s just throwing fastballs.

Yeah, and again keeping it very very One of the things that I loved about this is that Conan has clearly interacted with these stars and these megastars forever, because he’s got this level of comfort with these people, whether it’s perceived and it’s just because of how professional he is, or because he actually has a relationship with some of these people. Like it was seamless going from the opening Hullabaloo to then bringing out Robert Downey Junior. Again, they really started this thing by throwing fastballs somewhere over the rainbow, but then the main song Unlimited, from which it was just absolutely like, how do you top that? She came in and they absolutely belted it out. It was perfect.

Conan does his opening, he lands it, and then he brings out Robert Downey Junior. I love the best supporting act way that he did, the best supporting actor. How he get to monologue about every single one of the performances. And again, this is arguably you talk about pop culture in the modern times, one of the coolest guys out there generationally. And this is where, again I want to know how much input there was, because it was just a perfect thing to do.

It was like follow this, now, follow this. They started at a very high level. All right, well, come back and we’ll talk about my friend and yours. Adam Sandler. Oh, I’m cool.

I can’t wait to talk to you about this. Yeah, very much a Conan bit. By the way, again, just like lift goal, very much a Conan bit with one of Conan’s people. I know you’re not a huge out of Sadler bit, and I saw your reaction to it last night, so I’m the happy, optimistic Canadian up here. I was charmed by it, I really was.

I thought it was borderline brave to do what they did with Sandler in the audience with the hoodie and the microphone and allowing him to just be Adam Sandler. You didn’t think it landed. I know that I’m in the minority here. I understand the guy has a ton of money. We were supposed to take a break here, hold on, we’ll be right back.

Okay, all right, Mike’s got the giggles here. He apparently really likes Adam Sandler. Look, I’m obviously wrong. Adam Sandler has more money than anybody. He has all these successful films.

In whatever Hall of Fame we’re going to make, he’s going to be in it. I just I think he’s a fantastic dramatic actor. Uncut. Jebs is a great film, and he did that to show off that he can act. So please do more of that.

The recent thing, I don’t know what was called, the thing where he was in the spaceship with the alien. He’s really good in that. That was really good. Do more of that, please, But that bit last night where he’s in the audience and he’s dressed like quote unquote Adam Sandler and Conan’s giving him the business, it wasn’t funny. Now the rest of the Internet found it funny.

The rest of the Internet is gonna go see Happy Gilmore and say it was the funniest thing. I obviously just don’t get it, but you liked it. To me, it was very much a Conan bit and Adam Sandler, like him or don’t like him, A lister like he’s in. He’s one of these. He’s one of these A listers that in previous Oscars hosts have fun with some of these people.

You know, growing up with Jack Nicholson many times is in the front road, he’s smiling with the sunglasses or whatever. This is Conan’s version of that. In my opinion, not saying that Adam Sandler is Jack Nicholson, but he’s an A list star and it’s very much on Brent. It’s a mashup of the Oscars in Conan O’Brien’s sensibility and friends. As far as I’m concerned.

Somebody mentioned I think also on Threads Sandler would be a good choice to host the Oscars. He’s got the chops. We’ve seen he can do the sentimental again. The guy’s talented. I just don’t find some of the artistic choices he makes to be funny.

But he’s got a toolbox. I just wish he would use different tools. I think he’d be fantastic hosting the Oscars. Oh, Adam Sandler could absolutely knock the ball out of the park when it comes to that. He’s got again the collaboration that he has at his fingertips with people.

I think would be really special for something like that to pivot a little bit again, staying in the vein of Conan and his friends and people he admires and whatnot. What point did you notice that Nick Offerman was the announcer for the Oscars. I thought that was I don’t know if it was after the first commercial break or whatever. I’m like, I think that’s I said to Candy, I think that’s Nick Offferman.

And then of course he comes in later for a bit even better.

But what a bold, fantastic choice for the announcer for the Oscars having Nick Goferman there. I think I had the same timeline as you around the second commercial break, because I was like, wait, I know that voice. That’s Nick Offerman, because I recognized his particular delivery as the character of the president from the movie Civil War. He was doing that kind of read and then I couldn’t get that out of my head. I kept picturing that very serious Nick Offerman president doing the VOS so yeah, around the same time, I did Google just to make sure before they did the one minute bit.

I’ll play that here for people who missed it. This is Conan O’Brien’s first time hosting the Oscars. That is true in a culture, it is all about. A lot of pressure. Not really, I’ve hosted a lot of shows, Emmy Awards, Music Awards.

Well nothing this big, Nick, do me a favorite. Please stop interrupting. Okay, okay, guy, just trying to help, all. Right, Fine, the movies we honor tonight, explore the. Challenge this big, coming so late in one’s career, must weigh on a man’s soul.

That’s enough. Just write the script I gave you. He’s one of the great comedians of our time. Conan O’Brien, perfect, Thank you our OSCAR announcer, Nick Offerman, Thank you, Nick. Fantastic clip.

Just so much fun. Right, it was great that. And little nuds throughout the night. Again, I’m a huge Amy Poehler fan, and the idea that Nick got to have a little bit of fun with Amy Pohler was there. Just yeah, again, this is that collaboration I was talking about.

Conan brought our version, that the audience’s version of his people. You think about some of these people that he you would have say with Conan O’Brien. All over the show. People on the internet were losing their mind that the announcer got Amy Poehler’s name wrong, which was doubly funny to me, Just so good. What things you gotta be in on the joke?

Yep? All right. So at the end of the monologue he goes into a musical piece called I won’t waste time. I’ll throw the ball to you. I think anybody who’s been a long time Conan O’Brien fan knows his experience with The Simpsons and the idea of the mono rail song, and I think a lot of people were hoping that Conan would get his monorail song moment he did.

I don’t think it was too long. I think it felt fairly short to me, and I thought that he did a very good job of it, and to me, that itch for a mono rail song type presentation was completely scratched at that moment, and I was grinning ear to ear. I think I suffered from Montareel syndrome that especially because he had some sort of stick cane something in his hands, and my brain was just like Montoreil, Montoreel, and I needed mono rail level and this song was not montail level or boy, that’s a high bar. So I came away from the song a little disappointed. It might be one of those things if I rewatched the Oscars seven times, that it might grow on me over time.

But last night, in the moment, I was like, but it was good. Yeah, oh yeah, but to me necessary it’s again mashing up that cone in sensibility with this time honored tradition. In my viewpoint, the ouscers typically have a presentation like this. Sometimes it lands, sometimes it doesn’t. If you’re gonna stay with the traditional and you’re gonna make that happen, this is a Conan way to do it.

And again, I gotta be very like, I liked the length of it. It felt short to me, and I think that’s very important because it could have been a one note joke. There were a lot of things that could have been one note jokes that surprised me because they flower, they had a blooming and then a second blooming and it actually came out that one actually did for me. It held my attention the whole time. Can you bring Conan back and stay with me here?

So if you went back to say, Jimmy Kimmel, now you’re going down the middle straight host, he does a fine job. Nobody complains that Jimmy Kimmel hostly. Somebody can about everything, but for the most part, Jimmy Kimo hosted the Oscars. People aren’t like, what that’s crazy. If you go back to the Conan, well, now we kind of know what it does.

Okay, he’s gonna come out and he’s gonna do some quirky stuff. I wonder if he’ll do a song. Does the conanness of it wear off if he hosts it two, three, five times? Do you need more of a traditional Kimmel style host? And I wasn’t sure if we were going to jump around or not, but we have a little bit like the when he brought out Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan at the end and he reminded the audience about Billy Crystal’s dominance hosting this show.

You talk with these people who are at the tippy top. Billy Crystal at the very tippy top of Oscar hosts, and how Billy would reinvent himself when he would do it, and he would do it, maybe take a year off and Letterman comes in and then Billy comes back. I think that’s how it went. I think Billy had done it before and after Letterman and the idea that Conan could come back and he’s surrounded with Mike Sweetey and Robert Smigel and all of these collaborators. That’s the beauty of having a late night host do this, somebody who literally did the same thing every night, and their charge was to make it original and fresh and funny as much as they possibly could.

If you got a year in between, with all of the comedy goal that comes from the year of those movies that were there, I think absolutely there’s no question that Conan could come back and keep it fresh as early as next year. Could he do six or seven in a row. It might be like the Billy Crystal thing where he takes a year or two often then comes back. But I think he could do two more years of this, just using the movies of the day as the backdrop for the new comedy that comes out with that same framework. That we’ve been talking about.

I absolutely think he could do it again. Do you think we’re at a peak Conan moment right now? And there’s been a few over the decades, but I think today, on this Monday as a peak Conan moment. Could you see Netflix or more likely in HBO Max taking the millennium route and going pretty good at TV? You want to be way of these here’s some cash?

Or is the guy in the sixties, he’s got a podcast, He’s got enough money. You’re just gonna be competing against your past selves. The same question we had about Dave. Is there even a reason to do it at this point? I remember when he talked about leaving the Late Night Show as not the franchise itself, but actually the genre and what he was gonna do, and the deal that he had signed with HBO or Max whatever it was.

The idea of the travel show made so much sense Conan without borders. Yeah, let’s keep doing those. If we get a few of those a year, we’re satisfied. But then the other thing was the idea of the sketch show. And I mean, that’s been very quiet about that.

That to me would be I was so curious about what that was gonna look like. Would it be you know, Lauren Michael’s new show, or would it be something that is entirely Conan to me and Canadian think the kids in the hall, Like, the kids in the hall are perfect, and they’re so quirky, and there aren’t that many of them compared to say something like Saturday Night Live. I wanted to see Conan do that. And if you’re gonna talk about backing up a brinkstruck and giving him free rein to do something, I love that idea. But once a year to do the Oscars too.

Oh my, you could tell that the Again, I talk about the idea that my wife cooks with love and that’s our intangible ingredient. This show was made with a lot of comedy love. Oh yeah. So I think part of the matrix here is and I’m projecting like in my own career and I’m obviously not at all famous. I’m just some dude, but I’ve had points in my career between gigs where i would feel like, oh, I used to be John McDermott.

People used to take John McDermott’s calls. But being entertainment adjacent when you have a big fancy title. People take your calls and when you were a dude in the basement podcasting, some people take your calls because they were true friends. And some people have no use for you anymore, so they don’t take your calls. So, for Conan, is the podcast enough or is it at?

Oh? At some point I used to be Conan O’Brien. At some point I used to be David Letterman. Now Johnny Carson was fine being its. I used to be Johnny Carson and went away.

Dave seems good. Does Conan need it? Or is once a year enough? Is the podcast enough or never again enough? Or would a Netflix thing be intrigued?

Oh? Look at the name of his documentary, outlining the period between when he lost the Tonight Show and when he started the TVs show. What’s the title of it? ConA. Brian can’t stop.

And I truly believe that he can’t stop. I think he’s at the place now where he’s lucky enough to say, this is what I’m going to do, These are the things that I’m going to be a part of in my infinite energy for these things. To me, that was a guy who was energized, did not need to my as a fanboy, like, oh, wouldn’t it be cool if Kimmel or Letterman or some of these other people who hosted in the past were there were not you know, he could reference some of these things and make that’s the fanboy and me coming out. But then I see the presentation of him going up there and going, oh, no, no, no, no, no, he is I said it. I think I might have said it on this show too.

When he went back to The Tonight Show earlier this year or in twenty twenty four, he came back as a guest of The Tonight Show, and my first response was he seems way bigger than the show. Conan seems way bigger, and his podcasting dominance, I think is one of those things where people will continually pick up the phone because, yeah, you do want to be on Conan’s podcast, like you wanted to be on the late night shows before the dilution of the audience the way that they did. I think people want to be on his podcast for that reason, and that keeps him relevant right there. But I do believe the Conan O’Brien name is big enough that he will always be relevant. Now he is, He’s a giant he really is.

Last night was for many people. I think just like the Emmy’s back in the day. I think that the Emmy’s back in the day when he hosted that surprised a lot of people. I felt like that same level of surprise might be happening to a lot of people out there, going, Oh, Conan’s still around. For those of us who still love this stuff and listen to his podcast, we’re like he never left and he’s only getting better with age.

It’s interesting that you go from being underground and an acquired taste to a day like today as mainstream as it gets. Absolutely absolutely something else. I want to note there was a moment when Kimmel hosted I think it was last year, where he made a real time Donald Trump joke. It was during the performance, and it was something that had happened during and he made a reaction a joke, a reaction joke during the actual Oscars, and I forget the joke whatever. I was wondering if Conan was going to have any real time type moments where there would be stuff that would carry through the show, and the idea of when the Latvian crew for Flow won their first Oscar they talked about that and Cona’s response, your Move Estonia, and then he called back that your Move Estonia a couple of times throughout the show, which I thought kept it fresh.

To go back to that point, the idea that it wasn’t just a canned performance, that it was a live thing where he could also show his improvisation chops as the show moved flowed through. I thought that was a really neat addition to the program as well. It’s hard to make those editorial choices. You want to live in the real world. You have to deal with things that are obvious, for example, the La wildfire.

Yes, if you start getting into American politics these days, you’re going to lose half the audience whichever direction you steer that conversation. If you get into the Middle East, you’re going to lose half the people, depending on which way you steer that conversation. We’re here to talk about Conan O’Brien. Maybe some other time I’ll ask you about that topic, but it’s not why you’re here. So I don’t need to go there. You possibly have some views on geopolitics, it’s not why you’re here, so I don’t need my audience going. You know, I really like that Mike from the Letterman podcast.

He was really cool, but I totally disagree with his take on X and now everyone or half the people dislike you because it’s not what the show is. So I think it was a smart decision, yep, not to do it now. As for the speeches, if you get up there and you get your time I like when people get up there and use their time to you know, you get a platform, use it. I think that’s a good thing. And I don’t think that’s contradictory to what I just said.

One of the questions I have from the production standpoint is rushing people off the stage. What are we rushing to? Are we we just rushing to the American Idol Special or the eleven fifteen PM News. Let people have their moments, like at some point, okay, you gotta stop, but like forty five second clocks, especially when multiple people have won an award. Let people have their moment.

It’s why we’re here. I the more I see him do things, the more I enjoy Adrian Brody and some of his antics. He does have antics, the infamous snl antic when he introduced the musical guest addressed in Rastafarian with a Jamaican accent, and things like that. During his acceptance speech, the idea where I’ve done this before, I’m gonna keep talking here, do not play me off, and then after the thingk he did actually give what I thought to be Sometimes these socially conscious messages are out of touch. I thought his was actually really good.

It was universal. I don’t think it was walking Phoenix talking about private jets. I didn’t think it was like that. I thought he did a good job with it. Some of the people who would come up and be out of sorts, like it was the winners for Flow.

I think that had the phone and they read the speech and it was Yeah. I like allowing moments like that to unfold and to breathe because they can then become something else, and if they run the ship so tight that it can’t. I don’t even know how over the telecast went. I know we always record the next show on the DVR as well, and I think we watched maybe ten minutes into the American Idol show. I think that was if there was an overrun there.

I think it was only about ten to fifteen minutes. I don’t think it was that long, but they were making fun of themselves all night for it being so long, so I didn’t care. I didn’t mind. They acknowledged it. And when you allow moments like that to happen, to me, that’s a better trade off and it feels like you’re getting something special rather than something canned.

As part of the leadup, Conan actually said he was hoping something would go sideways because that’s where the magic is. He’s so right every time. Why do we love Letterman so much? Because whenever something went sideways, Now it’s a new show. Now it’s something else where, uncharted territory, and nobody knows where it’s going to go, including the producers of the show themselves, And to me, that’s one of the magical feelings that that Letterman brought to us and Conan.

That was one of the ingredients the bones that Conan continued with the Late Night with Conan O’Brien franchise that they took from Late Night with David Letterman, And sometimes they would plan these moments again to go back to a Conan bit, a very Conan bit, the dune sandworm funny the first time, as a Conan bit funny the second time. Because it’s like that thing was so expensive, we had to use it twice and I just, oh, what a perfect Conan bit. And it wasn’t unpredictable necessarily, but at the same time, it was a little bit. It was the him out of Pewe’s Playhouse, I guess I would say, yeah. And it just shows you the when things go sideways, the value of a quarterback, whether it’s Conan or Dave in his element or a Kimmel.

I was speaking with my wife over the weekend about the Will Smith incident and a few years later here in everyone’s mind, I think everybody thinks Chris Rock hosted the Oscars that year. He didn’t. He just happened to be there when things went sideways. And recovered pretty nicely. And I don’t think the trio of hosts that year really stood out when things went sideways.

There’s another situation where the slap happens and now we throw the ball back to Conan. That gets handled a lot differently. I think I could not agree more. That’s somebody that you want to be the host of that show. I remember Chris Rock hosting the MTV Video Awards when I was growing up.

I consider Chris Rocker host that the year of the slab was that was that Amy Schumer? That that was Amy Humor that hosted it. Which which again my audience. So we’ve been talking about Amy a lot lately. If I walked up to you and I said, Hey, who’s hosting the twenty twenty sis Oscars is Amy Schumer?

Wouldn’t you think? What? What? Yep? Yeah, one hundred percent?

And you’re right, that’s a good example of a show being on rails, never mind how the host has reaction reacted. All that show was so on rails that Will Smith Gott could could slap Chris Rock and then be celebrated like an hour later when he went up at That show was very on rails compared to last Night’s did not seem that way. It did seem fresh and unpredictable. And yes we’re acknowledging that it’s long. Conan made a Stockholm joke, a Stockholm syndrome joke about that.

It felt unpredictable, and I think that the late night hosts many times bringing I think Kimmel brought that feeling when he hosted as well. I think Billy Crystal when he hosted the show back in the day and did it such a masterful job of it, brought a little bit of that. But the late night hosts bring a special version of that because that’s their brand, that’s what they do. So last thought for me, I’m gonna hop in the time machine. I’m going to go back to the Wednesday of Conan’s first week as the host of Late Night, and I’m going to tell everybody in thirty years, this guy’s going to the Oscars and crush it.

I think would not be surprised by that. Some of the people who I was just talking to George Meyer this week, and George is a legend comedy legendary comedy writer. We were talking about the Lauren Michael’s book. He talked about the moment that Conan was vying for Late Night, and originally the idea was that he would be might be a head writer, one of the head honchos for it, and nobody considered him host. George was one of the guys that said to him, hold out for the host job.

This is when Conan O’Brian was a writer for The Simpsons. They’ve got the Harvard Alum National Lampoon background together just from different eras a little bit. George saw it because he would see Conan putting on these shows for the other Simpsons writers and how special of a talent he was. The idea of replacing David Letterman. Yeah, I’m gonna be on part of Late Night, this new this franchise that David Letterman built, and we’re going to be continued at NBC.

Somebody actually says to this, not to put any pun into this show, but a complete unknown and saying no hold out for the host job. That’s a ridiculous thing to say to someone like that. But George and people who were around Conan on a small scale back then, I think could say thirty years from now, this guy could be hosting the Oscars. I think that there were elements of him. Again, I think the Conan who was at Late Night that signed the five year deal.

The reason the five year deal existed was because of the Conan we saw last night. That was the Conan that did host the Emmys. Back then, that holding deal that NBC signed with him was because they did not want to lose this giant talent. And how many years later are we go ash he signed that deal and what five twenty years ago? He was that big and people saw it that much twenty years later.

Conan’s a smart investment. Such a bolds pick back in the day. Why not just hands twelve thirty to Gary Shandling or somebody like that. And just kudos to everybody involved in making that decision for being able to recognize the talent he is. And again he’s that.

I listened to his podcast all the time. It’s so natural to me to listen to that show. I enjoyed watching Conan. My golden age for late night television was when Late Show was on, then Late Show with Craig Ferguson and Conan either at the Tonight Show or his TBS show. He transitioned over to podcasting so seamlessly and can do these things.

The Travel Show again a very different kind of a show, so seamlessly and again hosting the Oscars things. I am not surprised that it went that well. I’m just so happy that it went that well. It was a delight to watch. Sometimes these things are a pain in the ass to watch.

Our good friend Rick Scheckman passed away two years ago this week, so we’re gonna talk about him as well. But then also we’re going to talk about King of the Z’s and we’re gonna do a separate episode where we actually go through Calvert to Forest’s one of his inaugural performances.

Together. We’re gonna do I don’t know if it’s gonna be a commentary or mystery science theater, how we’re gonna do it, but that’s gonna be coming out here soon. So that’s pretty exciting. I think Mordy is coming back on the show again soon. We’re gonna start celebrating the ten year anniversary of Dave leaving show with David Letterman.

So lots of good stuff coming up on the Letterman Podcast, and we’re gonna have you back too, because you’re one of my favorite guests. But I think we have a pretty good feel for the Oscars as I record this. Conan pretty comfortable out of the box. I think the audience took a second to adjust to him, and I shared a note in the Facebook group. Around seven eighteen or so he started doing banter with Timothy Shallimy, and I thought Conan was really in a groove there. You could tell that he knew he had the audience, and then he got a lot more comfortable and just did his thing.

Let’s walk through it in chronological order. The opening bit with Conan and doing a thing from the dememor movie substance, I didn’t think that worked, and I was like, uh oh, this might be rough.

I feel like I’ve seen that premise before. Maybe SNL did it, Maybe it was Keen Peel, but I’ve definitely seen that premise before. But that was really good, very funny sketch. To be fair, his monologue, the audience was tough. I feel like the material was better than the audience was.

And I did note red haired guitar lady stoneface the whole time. But I mean, she’s behind it. But the audience didn’t really give Shane enough love there. But let’s listen to a little bit of the monologue. This was bumming me out of little.

Shane Gillis figured out early into his monologue that the audience wasn’t quite feeling him. All right, now, I’m gonna lose you even more.

Uh for extra. He did his Biden impression before saying, look, I get it, you guys are pretty liberal here. The Daily Beast writes. Although the level of laughter in both monologue sounded fairly normal to casual viewers, pass sketches demonstrate that the show’s live performance are often hearing a worse audience response than the viewers at home. You know that’s really interesting because I was listening to the monologue and during the second half of the monologue, I was like, some of those laughs sound fake, and you know, would SNL mix in fake crowd live You’d have to be pretty good on a board there.

But I’m not gonna say my Spidey sense wasn’t tingling later on, Shane was kind of floundering and he’s like, all right, I don’t know how to get out of joke. All right, I don’t know how to get out of this joke. I find him very charming. It works av Club when with Shane Gillis gets another shot to show off how bad he’d be on Saturday Night Live. That’s just a bad take.

Bad take Avy Club, bad take their subheader. Can Gillis do a second thing, or at least stop doing this one? I don’t know. I mean, I’m gonna get in Shane’s corner here. They’re right say this for Shane Gillis.

Now they just hosted SNL twice. It’s harder to assume that had he kept his future player spot back in season forty five, he would have become the Jeff Richards of the twenties and I’d brow out in an eclectic ensemble with Gillis. There’s a clear sensibility at work in his sketches, and maybe there just would have been a whole lot more of that stuff, Satisfying Lord Michael’s nagging feeling the show was reaching out to an untapped portion of the audience that ptively wants less out of SNL again the best show of the season. I they had Shade been on the cast, he obviously would have been the breakout start. I know what’s going on at these websites.

You and I are not in sync various entertainment websites. I thought it was really good, but the AV Club Rights. Then again, maybe Gillis staying occupied by doing a bunch of terrible SNL sketches and presumably appearing in the occasional good one would have laid more immediately bare his CBS didcom sensibility rather than gussing it up with Edge Lord, podcast cred and the weird parasocial connections that go along with it. I’m sure Gillis is a good hang if you’re his actual friend. He seems affable enough to let himself be the butt of the joke.

But the thing is that’s never really been born out in many of the SNL sketches he’s done. Dude, that’s the vibe In every sketch he’s letting himself be the butt of the joke, and he seems like he’s a good hang. What are you talking about? AV Club Rights? Look?

I know if you’re reading this and you dig Gillis’s stuff. This will sound enormously personal. I reviewed his simul sitcom Tires, so I know what I’m talking about. Both the trips Gillis playing a few bad notes in Cicely and getting called names by randos for not liking a show on Netflix, a bias the likes of which has never been seen in this entertainment industry. In other words, what what is this piece?

But I’d love an actual explanation of why the Couple of Beers ad is supposed to be funny? Because it’s funny because the name A couple of Beers is funny, and the premise that the guy has two beers and then his kind of chill is funny. What I gotta get you A byline on this? He’s out promoting Glengarry Glenn Ross right now, and I’m starting to wonder is Bill gonna lose the old fans? And I’m not sure why I’m feeling that, but I’m feeling it. I think it’s a combination of being overexposed a little too much Bill Burr lately. And I’ve said that about a few comedians. Tim Gaffigan needs to tap the breaks, Nikki Glaser needs to tap the brakes.

I feel like there’s just a little bit much to Bill Burr and the Bill Burr were increasingly getting is some sort of mainstream media Bill Burr and not the quote unqute angry Bill Burr of his youth. Bill’s got a special coming up later this month, so we’ll be getting a lot of bill press in the next few weeks. May Martin spoke to The La Times. May has made a rock album. The La Times asked, May, this is obviously a tense time for a non binary Canadian comedian in the US, I holding up.

May said, like everybody, I’m full of existential dread and trying not to let the doom permeate too much and not to be paralyzed by how hopeless it all feels right now, because I know that it’s not hopeless, it just feels like such a massive step back. I have a lot of friends who are articulate activists, and I tried to take my clues from them La Times. This election cycle showed how some elements of stand up comedy culture drive a lot to the far right. With President Trump going on, Joe Rogan and Tony Hinchcliffe performing at a Trump rally. Dave Chappelle arguably contributed to the current anti trans backlash in his work.

The question is an unnerving to see people with backgrounds and stand up having this direct line to the far right in power. May said, yeah, it’s very strange, but I could see where they met. Because governments reach into reality TV. Now you’ve got the host of the Apprentice. Of course he’s going to want to talk to that host of Fear Factor.

That’s funny. But those guys you’re referencing, they’re not part of my comedy community. I don’t think about them. What I want is for you to engage in combat with them. I’d rather be aligned with qualified people and thinkers and scientists.

I hope that the heroes of mine are still fighting the good fight and not falling into this perception that the enemy is the WOLP left. The San Diego Union Tribune caught up with Jerry Seinfeld and Jim gaff again. They asked, Jim, one of your favorite comedy topics has been your weight battle. As your perspective on food changed, and do you and Jerry eat together one on tour? Gaffigan said, Jerry eats more during the day than anyone I’ve ever seen, and I’m an eater.

He eats breakfast and then eats lunch. Then come around five o’clock he so discipline he stops eating. I have no discipline, but I’m more of a late night eater, which is probably the healthiest time to do it, especially a big stake at Burgers. Then I can climb in bed and see how many nightmares I have. The great thing about an appetite suppressant is that I still have the desire, but just consume like a human being rather than a dog.

That got a laugh out of Jerry. The conversation moved to the current news cycle. Jim said, we live in such a twenty four hour news cycle. I’d like to give these people the audience credit that they’re mourning whatever crisis, man or natural. But at the shows they got out of their way not to acknowledge that.

I’d say that after nine to eleven it was weird performing, But otherwise, humans are always looking to embrace denial. Jerry said, We’re never in a good place. It doesn’t matter what’s going on in the world. I went to the premiere of Amy Schumer’s new movie Kind of Pregnant and sat in a pack movie theater and everybody laughed their heads off from start to finish. Really, Jerry, everybody laughed their heads off and kind of pregnant.

Who was in the audience. I digress. Jerry says, that’s what a comedy show is. You’re enjoying the movie, but also fifty percent of the fun as being around people who were laughing, and everybody forgets what they were upset about. What an amazing feeling it was to sit in an audience.

It’s like Jurassic Park with dinosaur rides. Good question here, what are some of the things making you laugh right now? Jerry said, I’ve been thinking about the number of different fake identities. I seem to be a husband and father. I actually had a chameleon and the cute little lizard asked me, how are you able to transform yourself like that?

And I said to the lizard, coming from you, that’s a real compliment. I got to laugh out of Jim. Jerry continued, I’ve learned her audiences really think that I’m this person who is thoughtful and empathetic to their problems and interested in their day, and they’re buying it. Jim has said, I’m going to a middle score basketball game today and then a girls high school basketball game after that, and there’s some anxiety in my life. It’s very raw rod the games, and I think you shouldn’t say anything.

I’m amazing parents that lose it at these games. I can’t believe they really care. I’m always nervous about committing to the kids’ games, so don’t know what the schedule is. The last thing you want to say is I’ll be there and don’t show up, and there’s ten years of therapy. Jerry commented, if your father showed up but everything you did, you’d think, what’s wrong with him?

Is dad? Okay? Jim said, my dad came to a couple of football games, but it would be weird if he came to everything. Now, if you don’t go to a game, you’re consider the great Satan parents. I will tell you those years go fast.

I feel like it was five minutes ago. I was the coach of some five year old Rex soccer kids and they’re all graduating college. Now it goes so fast. Enjoy all those games. I disagree with Jim and Jerry.

Make every game that you can. This has been my first fall, and now spring is an empty nester and I two weeks ago, I said to my wife, it’s six thirty eight pm and I’ve watched two movies already. I don’t know what to do with myself. Now, once it gets warm, I’ll go out sign we’ll go hiking and hiking being generous walking out in the forest somewhere. I start doing that and I’ll start running again.

But it has just been so cold. I’ve just been watching everything. Have you watched Paradise yet? By the way, watch Paradise. This weekend’s episode of Paradise was one of the top episodes of television ever.

I’m not going to tell you why I’m saying that. Just watch Paradise. It’s on Hulu. I digress again. Rosebud Baker talked to The Hollywood Reporter.

They were curious how she finds the difference between watching her self perform as opposed to watching the SNL cast perform their materials she writes for SNL. Great question, Rosebud said, I get the same juice from it. I really love getting a win. That means getting people to laugh, whether or not I’m the person performing it. It’s funny.

When I started as a stand up I didn’t think I wanted to write stuff that someone else got to do. But now it’s a really good feeling. And the thing about SNL is that it’s collective wins. You don’t necessarily get credit for your specific liner joke, but when it’s a loss, it’s a collective life. Rosebud.

Was it like getting back to stand up after having the baby? Rosebud said, the first time going back on stage was wild. I felt like I had gone to space and come back and I was like, I went to space, and Everybody’s like, yeah, Okay, we’ve seen his pictures of space, and I’m like, but these are my pictures of space. They’re mine. You feel so weirdly separate from the world, and especially from the comedy world.

I had to find my footing. Hollywood Reporter, you have a few jokes in the special about feeling as though men are useless when going through things like IVF. Do men get the absurdity of the gender gaps and those experiences? Rosebud said, Look, the short answer is I don’t care. The longer answer is if men are able to watch it laugh at it, that doesn’t make me happy, because I do want comedy to be a unifying thing.

That’s what I aim for. That being said when I was writing this, I was thinking of women because I was writing from my perspective. I thought, this one’s for the girlies. But I’ve been surprised that the number of men that have responded to the special. I don’t hate it.

But I did get the week of the fiftieth off because it was the senior writers and the alumni who were writing for the special. So I was just able to enjoy the show on the party, which was really nice. It helped remind me what a legendary place this is to work. You can lose sight of that when you come in every day. Your heroes are hanging on the walls, but that doesn’t always sink in being there at that show.

It really sunk in how lucky I am. This is part of comedy history and I got to be there. That rosebud piece reminded me that I hadn’t seen any press about George Lopez at all. Remember, he had a comedy special that came and went and nobody talked about it. And as of this recording I haven’t watched yet.

So he apparently did no press for that special. That’s just weird, really weird. Let’s file that away in the back of our mind because sometime in the next x years we’re gonna find out why there was no press for this special. I’ve been doing this for a while. There’s gonna be something there.

Colin Jill dug through twelve dumpsters of trash trying to find wife Scarlett Johansson’s lost engagement ring. Colin told a story on Pop Culture Jeopardy and said it was a great day for me. One time, Scarlett told Jost she thought she might have accidentally thrown the ring in the trash. Colin goes through twelve dumpsters and says, I went back to the house and she said, oops, it was in my pocket. I understand.

I’m somebody who I don’t know. Nine times a day will ask my wife, have you seen my keys and they’re in my hand? Or have you seen my phone and they’re in my pocket? And I’ll find my keys on my phone and my keys will be in my pocket. I’m that person you don’t want to live with me.

Caloroga Shark Media. Do you like Conan O’Brien, because if you do, you’ll like today’s show, and if you don’t, you might as well leave. Now. I’m Johnny Mac with your Daily Comedy News. This is the OSCARS Preview, your host for the ninety seventh Annuel Academy Awards, former late night talk show host current podcaster Conan O’Brien.

He joked at a press conference, I only hosted so I could be invited. Conan did a lot of press this week. Everything I’m about to tell you here is from many different sources. I’ll mention the sources for the most part, but understand that I’m really bouncing around from interview to interview and trying to piece things together thematically. As we had forward here, Conan was riffing.

He said he was probably the greatest entertainer of the producers I’ve ever worked with. The producer said working with Conan has been a delightful experience. Conan said, well, we’ll see what you’re saying on Monday. The OSCARS team, they’re incredible professionals. They know what they’re doing, they do beautiful work, and it’s been a thrill for myself off and from my head writer, Mike Sweeney, and also my lawyer as well.

Conan said one of the things that as him the most excited is wearing a tuxedo. He said, it’s the nicest thing I’ve ever put on in my life. It’s made by High Society. Conan said it was important to use them because these are the people that make incredible wardrobe in Los Angeles. I didn’t want to go with whatever designer.

We wanted to do something that was from the community, and they made this incredible tuxedo. Another reason Conan accepted incredible lighting. I said yes to this happily because I wanted to be part of this magical machine and have for the first time my life, incredible lighting. Because when I see people on a mall, all they say is you look so good in person, what’s wrong with you on television? And this is my chance, so let’s get that lighting together.

Conan got some advice from Pass hosts, including Billy Crystal and Kimmel. Conan said, I’ve spoken with Billy Crystal, who I think is the als. I’m great and mastered the hosting of the Oscars, in my opinion and will always be top Conan said Kimmel and his wife reached out to Conan and met him at a restaurant. Conan joked that Kimmel picked an expensive restaurant and ordered tons of appetizers that I don’t need. I don’t eat shell fish.

He ordered it and then stuck me with a bill while wife Molly gave me all the pitches and the things I should know. Molly’s the genius in that equation. They’ve been very supportive and very helpful, and so that’s nice because I came up in a very different era of late night, when not everybody was chobby and friendly, and he didn’t just pick up the phone. So this new era where people are so lovely to each other is something I don’t take for granted. Interesting anecdote about Billy Crystal from the Times interview.

Conan said, Billy lost his house in the fire, and I didn’t want to bother him because I can only imagine. Then I saw him at the SNL fifty and we had a long talk. So I think I’m going to be texting him to say, hey, maybe here is some jokes things like that. Then he talked about the dinner with the Kimmel’s ConA said things you wouldn’t even think about, Like if you’re doing a bit about somebody in act one, make sure they’re in their seat, because sometimes five minutes into the monologue they’re still loading people in. Jimmy said, just make sure you sit down when you can in between acts, because you’re standing the whole three hours and it does start to wear away at you.

So I’ve had a pair of metal legs made that I’m going to paint a flush color. ConA talked about Kimmel at a different piece and said his tips kept going back to try and sit down. If you could do the jokes sitting down, do them sitting down? What are you? Franklin roosevelts, it’s funny.

Conan was on Kimmel’s show, and Kimmel said, I wouldn’t give you tips on jokes or any of that stuff. I’d never do anything like that, and asked Conin do you have a tuxedo? Codin said, I have a tuxedo. I’m going to change out fits fifteen times. How many tuxedos would you wear in a night?

Kimmel said, well, what I would have is two jackets, and I would switch into the second jacket, and I always felt dumb about it, And Conan said, good to known, and he would tie a chair to your butt. Right more Conan, he spoke to us Weekly and said, I’ve hosted many awards show in my life, but the Oscars it’s the pinnacle. It’s the one you dream about hosting when your child. As long as the pay is good, I’m looking into that. What can we expect.

There’ll be several moments in the Oscars were all be shirtless and oil, and I think that’s going to hurt the program incredibly. My biggest goal is to enjoy the nine hours of the Oscar telecast. I think it would be a shame to get the chance to host the Oscars and not have a good time. So I’ll be medicated. Conan said, the biggest hosting lesson he’s learned over the years is that mistakes aren’t mistakes.

I’m someone who hopes that things sometimes go a little off the rails because that’s where the real memorable moments happen on late night and on the Oscars. Yeah, there is this thing a couple of years ago. I don’t know if you remember, remember Will Smith slap Chris Rock. Yeah, I think we’re still talking about that. One Conan says he will address the current political climate during the awards, but he won’t get bogged down in devisive jokes.

I think it’s host I can’t ignore the moment we’re in, but I also have to remember it’s threading a needle. I also have to remember what we’re here to celebrate and fuse the show with positivity and also shine a light and all those people that have worked incredibly hard, not just dayless celebrities, but people you never see, craftsmen and crafts people that work hard and have spent years making the films. But I do with humor, and then I also make sure the night doesn’t drift into only about politics, because I think that’s robbing people of something beautiful, hard work that they’ve done. So it’s a difficult line to walk, but I’m determined to figure it out. We’re told the show we’ll have uplifting moments dedicated to la after January’s fires.

As for his week putting this together, it’s been a thrill. It’s like for the first time getting to drive a Ferrari. My philosophy on this is as the host, I’m the spokesperson in a way. I’m the person who’s sitting in for anyone who’s watching at home. If something happens it seems awful, funny, or strange, I should comment on it.

Will Conan have a musical opening? His answer, I can either confirm nor deny anything that’s happening anywhere in the show, mostly because I don’t know what’s going on. I don’t come to rehearsal. I hang out a cheesecake factory which is on Vinen Island. The whole check here in this business to get people to watch, to see what’s gonna happen.

See, this is the mistake I used to make. I used to tell people exactly what I was going to do long before I did it, and no one tuned in. Then I learned, oh, don’t tell people what you’re gonna do. A magician taught me that The New York Times profiled Conan. Conan had to evacuate his home during the fires.

His wife called and asked what to save. His only thought was a nineteen eighty letter from author E. B. White, Conan had written to him as a teenage fan. Conan said, and he wrote me back a really sweet letter.

So I said, just grab that if the rest goes, it goes. Conan is still living in a hotel. His preparation for hosting the Oscars has included bringing in ten of his own writers, running jokes by the crew, and dropping into clubs in LA to try out the material. You know now that I’m thinking, I’ll tell you. I had reached out to Smigel’s camp to see if I get him on to talk about Night of Too Many Stars, and I got silence back, probably because Smigel’s probably working with Conan on this, now that I think about it.

That said, professionally, a non response is just the worst thing high Night of Too Many Stars. Just write me back and say, like, the dude’s busy, or we hate your show, or nobody listens to your show. We’re not doing that. Non Responses aren’t cool if you work professionally in the industry. No is a perfectly good answer.

Hey do you want to host the Oscars? No? Hey do you want to host the Oscars? Well, I’ll get back to you, or let me think about it. That’s not good.

It’s seem like with your friends, do you want to hang out Saturday night? No? Just tell them no. If you don’t want to hang out. Just no is a fine answer anyway.

Hopefully I’ll hear from the Smigel people. I’m just genuinely interested in the event and what goes into the event, and in the most positive way. You raise some money, where does the money go? I don’t mean that like I’m hosting sixty minutes. I don’t mean it like where does the money go?

I mean like, oh, where does the money go? You? Guys, guys seem like you’re doing a good thing. You’d like to learn more about it. So smigle camp, someone get back to me if you want to tell me.

Nobody listen to the podcast. That’s fine. I have digressed to Conan brought in ten writer is one of them, possibly perhaps maybe who knows Robert Smigel to work on the jokes. They’ve been running jokes by the crew and dropping in at clubs in LA to try out material. But they’ve been keeping that on the DL.

I haven’t heard a thing about that. That’ll probably come out next week. Interesting that that hasn’t leaked at all. Conan said, I started seriously writing comedy around the time I was eighteen, and that’s what I think about all the time. But he says there’s no formula.

It’s frustrating, but it’s not math. He can’t prove it. The only way to find out is to try it on people. He also wouldn’t tell The Times if he’s doing a musical number or an opening montage. My guess one hundred percent, Yes, one hundred percent.

I have no doubt he will do something musical and goofy to open up. But Conan says nothing’s in stone. I’m leaving every possibility on the table. I have choices right now. We’ll see what happens.

Conan got a little more serious with The Times. I said yes, because I’m nostalgic, particularly now about my childhood. The biggest thrill I’ve had in my career is meeting the celebrities that were on my TV when I was a little boy. So when I met Don Knats, I lost my mind. When I met Tom Cruise, I was happy and he was lovely to me, but it couldn’t have the same impact as Don Knots, and I remember watching Johnny car Person hosts the Oscars and that being a big deal.

The entertainment landscape has changed a lot. I told Billy Crystal, you hit a note that I don’t think you can hit anymore because when people tuned into his Oscars, everyone had seen the movies. He was parrotying, it’s not the communal campfire that maybe it once was. But I still think the Oscars is meaning really good cinema, especially when it’s from different countries, different points of view, as an incredible amount of residence and importance right now, and this is the night that celebrates that. To be part of it is meaningful to me.

I don’t think of it as a thankless task. Even if I just do it once and no one’s interested in me in doing it again, it’ll have been a meaningful experience for me. My parents aren’t here to see it. Yeah, they passed away last year, but I know it would have been a huge deal to them. I was able to tell my father and he was impressed.

He probably wondered, couldn’t they find someone else. ConA told people I have a really great photograph of my parents laughing in the audience, an event I did years ago, and I realized early on the original reason anybody gets into comedy is just trying to make our parents laugh. I used to think to myself sometimes, Huh, why would I continue doing comedy. If my parents aren’t here anymore, I’ll still be thinking about them on Oscar night and trying to get them to laugh. That’s kind of a comfort.

It’s also more pressure in case in the hereafter they don’t like it, and they let me know. When your parents go through all that effort to travel through space, time and the mists of mystery to tell you they didn’t love it, that’s a crushing blow. So I’ve really got to nail it. The topic of politics came up again. Conan said, it’s all about threading the needle.

I’m there really to talk about the films, to talk about the industry, and yeah, there’s gonna be political jokes here and there. There have to be. But if it’s a screed, I’m doing a disservice to everybody. I’m actually doing a disservice to the people who might agree with the screed. In my opinion, however, anyone voted should not be a prerequisite for whether you enjoy the show.

I feel very strongly about that. What’s Conan the most nervous about getting the tone right. The tone’s been shifting a lot in LA and people love to project their agenda on a big show. The thing I think the most about is how the ground can shift between when I’m talking to you. This is the New York Times and this is by Molna Rizzicks.

I’m not friend of the show, Jason Zinneman. Perhaps Malayna could become a friend of the show, but ConA wants to get the tone right. The tone has been shifting a lot in LA. The thing I think about the most is how the ground can shift between when I’m talking to you and when the show happens. Moods can change, currents can change.

I want to make sure that I have my intenta up forever, and I’m gonna be doing that right up until they tap me on the shoulder to go out. So I just hope I’m able to ride it like a wave, because there’s so much about it that I can’t manifest. Now just gonna happen. It’s what excites me and worries me, and that in a nutshell my life, I’m drawn to things that scare me. They excite me and they scare me.

I love them and I dread them, and it keeps flipping. And they haven’t made a medication yet that will fix it. I think the surprise for America is people are gonna look at this and say, that’s one of the most attractive men alive. Some more odds and ends from Conan. I’m gonna go to the audience and I’m gonna shave a Stanley Tucci’s chest.

He hasn’t consented, He’s heard about it, he said no, but I’m still gonna do it. Conan said, the Oscar audience can expect to say something new. I don’t care if my ideas are bad ideas. I care that they’re new and you haven’t seen it before. You know what I mean.

Wrestling the giant Kobra, you know, for the first time on stage hasn’t been done. I can sing, I can dance, I can do close up magic. I’m a contortionist. You don’t know what I’m gonna do. Anything can happen at any time.

The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the producers of the Oscars, Raj Kapor and Katie Milan. Katie told The Hollywood Reporter, We’ve been preparing for the show for months and months and nights, and then what happened in January caused us to do a rethink of a lot of the elements and really think, Okay, how do we acknowledge it, the fires, how do we reflect on it?

And also how do we give the people the ability work so hard and have so much …

So, yeah, it’s been an interesting and difficult couple of months and we just really hope this year’s show kind of helps heal and it’s a bit of a love letter to la. Kapoor also was a producer on this year’s Grammys. The Grammars were acclaimed for the way they handled La. Kapoor said, it’s definitely influenced our show. We have moments that definitely acknowledge the fires, what has happened.

It’s kind of our unique spin on how we acknowledge that. But there will be at least three moments when the show that touch on it and hopefully have some messaging that may be inspiring. Then you know, a charitable component with the Motion Picture Academy and the charities they’re supporting, and then there’s a way that Conan will acknowledge it. So throughout the evening there’s gonna be some touchstones to acknowledge because so many people in the room. So many people in the film industry have been impacted by it, and I think almost everybody in LA knows somebody who’s experienced some sort of loss or impact.

So we feel that it’s very prudent that we acknowledge it and make it part of our show. We also have the Oscars to produce. We have twenty three awards to give out, and we want to really honor everybody who’s nominated and have the unique things that make the Oscars the Oscars. Milan talked about what Conan’s up to and said, there’s a lot of ideas and he’s a great team. People have been cooking them up for weeks and weeks and weeks.

What we have at the moment is probably way too many, but we love that because then we can whittle it down to the best of the best for the show. Some of them are pre taped, a lot of them are live in the room. I think Conan is just so beloved and he has such great connections with pretty much everybody who’s going to be in that audience. So seeing that from the stage and allowing him to kind of really own the room and give everybody license in the room and have a good time. It’s crucial and key.

But you know what we love about Conan in his styles that he always comes up with something unexpected. We’re going to pepper that throughout the show. So yes, there will be some pretapes. There’s definitely going to be some unexpected moments, and there are probably some surprises we haven’t even thought of yet because it’s a constantly evolving creative process. At the moment.

Oscar writer Bruce Valange talked to The Hollywood Reporter about some of what goes on in making one of these things. They asked the question kind of similar to what Trevor Noah talked about that I played the clip the other day. Do you play to the room or do you to play the people at home? Bruce said, you make it work for the house meeting the people in the room, because if the house is enjoying it, that spirit is seen by people at home watching it, and they kind of get into the fact that it’s working, and even though they might not know every reference is being made, there’ll be enough you have to calibrate. His advice for any Oscar Night host, I always tell hosts to front load the show because for everybody who wins.

There are four people who don’t, and as the evening wears on, the room fills up with losers, and they’re not listening to you. They’re texting, firing their agent, firing their dentist, whoever. So you’re not gonna get the laughs you got. And many times the camera cuts to where Eddie Murphy was sitting and now it’s a lady who bought a dress from TJ Max that you got for the occasion. You better do this strong stuff up front because you’re not gonna build as the show goes on.

All right, Bruce, what makes a great Oscar host? And guys, you know I don’t preread these things half the time. Ah, I didn’t set this up. I’m laughing. Let me answer.

Bruce said, Well, what Joe Cooy proved at the Golden Globes is you have to be a big star. I’m not going to do it. Scott Becker, relax because if you’re gonna make fun of big stars, they have to feel as if you’re on their level. There’s a very short list of people who can do that. Bruce is they’re an upside of hosting an Award Show. Hey, if you’re Nikki Glaser, there’s a great upside. And she wasn’t mean. She calibrated her stuff. Her act is very dirty and she was being a nice girl, but she had a little edge to it.

I don’t know if it would have worked on the Oscars necessarily, because while it’s the same crowd, there’s more pomp and ceremony to this thing. I think she was a little risk averse, even though she was now on her own talk show and everything about her was out and the public loved her. I think she was very protective and wanted her people around her and that was it.

So that was the only one that was really difficult. Bruce R. People ever warned that they’re going be made fun of. He said, no, Elizabeth Taylor was the real exception. It was because it was a joke about a personal life.

The nominees for Best Picture are Anora The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown Conclave, Dune Part two, Amelia Perez, I’m still here, Nicol Boy’s The Substance, and Wicked. The only one of those I’ve seen is Dune Part two, and I didn’t think it was that good, so don’t ask me what the best picture is.

And as I record this late on Thursday afternoon, I’m now realizing they’re probably scrambling to put together something for the Great Gene Hackman that is quite developing new stories. I record on Thursday afternoon, perhaps by the time you’re hearing this on Saturday, the story has changed one way or another. We have some more information, So I don’t mean to offend. It’s Thursday three, sixteen pm Eastern, Johnny Mac talking to you now. But my point here is, yeah, I bet there’ll be a big Gene Hackman segment on Sunday.

Tim Walls was introduced as Jim Gaffigan is at Jim’s show on Wednesday Night, and then Walls walks out and says, I know what you’re thinking. He’s much more handsome in person. Gaffigan on Instagram said, really enjoyed meeting him and his team. Fyi, I’ve never seen a politician greeted by his constituents. That’s a hard word to say.

This was take four, and I’m still not sure that I got it correct, but I’m moving on. By those guys, the way Governor Walls was to night, Shane Gillis is your host of Saturday Night Live. There is a new promo I will play you the promo, but let me describe the promo, so there’s some visuals there. Shane is walking backstage at Studio eight h with cast member Ashley Padilla. Along the way, Shane’s going to run into Michael Longfellow.

He’s passed out on the couch. Mikey Day is wearing Sarah Silverman’s clothes, and the police don’t destroy guys look kind of disheveled. Towards the end, Padilla gets an IV let’s listen. How are you feeling. Are you excited to host?

Yeah, I’m excited. I’m just worried everyone’s gonna be hungover? Still from the fiftieth makes you say not that for one thing?

A Kennedy Center rep says the show is continuing as scheduled. You may have heard Donald Trump took over the Kennedy Center and some shows aren’t happening. Not doing politics today, just telling you what’s going on. So the Conan thing is still happening. That’s good.

Camille n Gianni returning to stand up, very very interesting. It’s his first special in ten years, and it will be part of hilarious, No Date, No Idea. When they’re recording no Idea. What it’s called, no Idea, what it’s about. It’s the second special of his career, is first in more than a decade.

Now. I’m interested in what Cameal will do as a stand up because his first special back from twenty thirteen, is called Beta Mail, and the persona he’s doing is a very soft spoken beta type character. And here we are a decade later and he’s done a few serious acting jobs. Plus he was in the Marvel movie. I can’t remember what that was called.

I’m gonna have to actually google it. Oh, the Eternals, I can never remember that one. He played KINGO. Remember he got like super buff, So he’s been like super buff leading man type. Is he going to do that?

Is he going to do his beta comedy act. It’ll be curious to see that. Anyway. I liked his stand up work. I also like him as an actor, so I look forward to that one.

From the Tennessee and Naperghetzi was talking about hanging out with all the celebrities around SNL fifty he talked about going to the cam that kind of situation. You got to imagine all these celebrities, everybody’s reading and everything. Where he’s sitting. You’re allowed to bring a plus one or not a plus one? Are you sitting farther back?

Are you in the middle? He said it was weird too, because there were after parties every night. At one point, Nate and Tina Fey, we’re talking about the exclusive after parties. According Nate, Tina Fey’s like, what are these after parties? I mean, I haven’t heard about one of them, and he continued, usually nobody knows what’s going on, and people will be overlooked.

It’ll be big people to be little people. It was comforting to hear Tina say that. I’m like, yeah, I didn’t hear about any of this. You found out the moment about the after parties and you’re like, I don’t want to ask, I don’t want to show up, and they’re like, you can’t come in. I’ve been to an after party or two now.

Not being a performer, it’s always awkward when you were like not in the clubs, so like you’re there and there are famous people there and they don’t care about you know, suit types, and you know, it’s a little easier when I was in my thirties, not my fifties. Boy, I can’t even imagine being in that scenario now, At least at one point I was halfway young. But they’re just weird and nothing ever amazing happens, I hear. I’ll tell you a story real quick. We were out in last Vegas, and we were out there for that was when JFL Las Vegas had the Comedy Festival.

At the same time it was the AVN Porn Awards, and one of the bosses decided, since my team was already out there, we would also cover the porn Awards for serious. One of my hosts kind of somehow, sort of knew one of the porn stars and we got invited to a party in the porn stars hotel room. This is a true story. Why would I make this up? And we’re walking down the hall, you know, and it’s me and my bozo friends and you know, it’s not exactly Entourage here, actually it is Entourage, just you know, we’re all of the turtles.

So we’re walking down the hall and a big stereotypical bouncer sees this from you know, a million feet away and starts shaking his head. He’s like, you’re going the wrong way, guys. And my host he’s like, nope, we’re here for whatever her name was, and he was right, and they let us in and there we are in the suite and the porn stars having a party and it’s just a party. Nothing crazy was happening on. There was no worn, there were no drugs or just people hanging out and we had some drinks.

Anyway, later that night we wind up at the Porn Awards, which they take very seriously. The house band that night was smash Mouth, which is kind of cool. So we’re sitting in the back they start giving out the awards and we get the giggles because remember, back in the day, porn titles would be spoofs of real movies. I’m trying to think of one here I will google. Okay, I’m about to get a little naughty here.

If you haven’t chased the kids already, chase the kids? Hit stop? All right, I’ll babble for another five set. Did you hit stop? Or the kid’s gone?

Okay? So examples would be, you know, the nominees for Best Picture are sperms of endearment, saving Ryan’s privates, romancing the bone for your thighs only you get it. So we had the giggles and we had a wonderful night, and they gave us gifts. So I get back to the room and I’m like, I wonder what this gift is that they gave us. And it was a glass thing, a glass thing that you know, my and might enjoy a glass thing, you know, say like eight inches long, that kind of thing.

All Right, you with me? We’re naughty today. I’m sorry. So I have this thing, and I’m in my hotel room and I’m like, what am I going to do with this? Am I going to put it in my luggage and explain to the TSA why I have this?

When I bring it home? My wife knew what I was doing as a work assignment, but like, hey, guess what I brought home? Or do I leave it in the room leaving the maid to wonder? Hmm? I left it in the room anyway, I quite digress.

Where the heck were we when I started talking about this? Oh? After parties, Yes, Nate Bergancie went to one John C. McGinley, you know doctor Cox from Scrubs. He has joined untitled HBO comedy series starring Steve Carell.

And what’s interesting is the untitled HBO comedy series starring Steve Carell was created by Bill Lawrence. You know Bill Lawrence, creator of Scrubs and Ted Lasso and all kinds of awesome things. Untitled HBO comedy series starring Steve Carell will be set on a college campus and follow Steve Carell’s character, which is a writer who’s navigating his complicated relationship with his daughter. John C. McGinley will play Walter Mann, the president of the university.

All right, that’s good casting. He’ll be good at that. No additional details about the series are currently known. Well, there are some details I just didn’t tell you, Like I didn’t tell you Mike Tarsus is writing on it. But point being, we don’t know much about it other than the general show and some people working on at ten a half hour episodes at some point in the future.

Hey, what would do you think if I told you Jimmy Fallon was hosting Survivor Weird right, Jeff Probes was on The Tonight Show hosted by Jimmy found Oh by the way in class on Thursday I was telling a story about Johnny Carson, and I understand that these students are born in let’s see, what are they now? Two thousand and five seven? That kind of arranged mee more two thousand and seven at this point, right, And I just asked them do they k know who Johnny Carson was? And some of them had never heard of Johnny Carson? Are you feeling old yet?

I am? And I get it. I wasn’t like you’re silly, I’m like, all right, he hasn’t been on TV in thirty years. Why would you know who Johnny Carson is? But just boy, it happens anyway.

The current host of the SND show hopefully you’ve heard of this, Jimmy Fallon fellow. His guest was Jeff Probs, who is the host of Survivor. They asked the audience in season fifty, which is still a year and a half away, should Jeff Probs be a Survivor contestant instead of the host? Interesting question. Fallon voted no, but the audience voted one hundred and seventy three to eleven in favor of Jeff probsed being a contestant on Survivor fifty.

That has been a notion before. What would happen if Jeff played the game, But if Jeff plays the game, somebody else has to host it. Then Jeff said, what if Jimmy Fallon hosted Survivor? Of course a Jimmy Fallon audience would like the idea, And so I took a second to think about it, and I’m more pro Fallon than most people in the industry seem to be. You know, I understand what hosting that SNYDE show is and what Jimmy does.

Is it cool with a capital C? Now, Conan O’Brien is cool with a capitol C, even though it’s goofy. Jimmy is not cool, No, not at all. But I think it could be if he had a different gig, you know what I’m saying. Anyway, do I think Jimmy Fallon would be good at hosting Survivor?

I don’t think so, because I think he would just be Jimmy Fallon hosting Survivor, you know what I mean, Like he would just the Jimmy fallonness of it would take over the show. What you need in that role if you didn’t have a Jeff Probst, you need somebody like Ryan Seacrest. You need a professional host. I think Mike Chisholm and I from The Letterman Show got into this a couple of weeks ago. If you look at what was it Simon Cowell’s American X Factor, where they didn’t have Ryan Seacrest, they had some other dude.

When you see some other dude being the glue, being the traffic cop, being the person in the middle of the show keeping the show moving when it’s not Ryan Seacrest, you notice, oh wow, Ryan Seacrest is good at that. Ryan Seacrest is good at it because he’s invisible doing it. I think Ryan Seacrest I could wake him up at three in the morning and go, hey, don’t worry about why I needed a host Survivor right now, and he could do it. So you need somebody like that, a traffic cop who can just hang back and isn’t trying to make the show about them. I don’t think Jimmy found would be a good Survivor host.

And as I mentioned near the top, Shane Gillis is your host on SNL. Somebody who won’t be on this week is Chloe Fyneman. She has COVID Apparently the SNL COVID is going around. She posted an Instagram story with the caption this is so annoying and it was an image of two COVID positive tests, and another post on Wednesday, since deleted. Interestingly enough, she said it was her first time contracting COVID since twenty twenty, and described her symptoms as alternating between feeling like it’s just a cold to getting faint doing simple tasks in her apartment like going to the refrigerator.
