What do you think, Oh man, you’re setting me off here. Tina Fe I talked about this podcast. I think thirty Rock rests on the shoulders of Alec Baldwin. I’m sure Tina was great in the creative process, but that show, if Alec Baldwin is not on screen, is terrible. So there’s no way I’m giving performance to Tina Fey.

I also brought up Steve Carell on the Office as a strong contender. Alec Baldwin definitely brought a unique charisma to thirty Rock. It’s true his presence is Jack Donneghie was a huge part of what made the show so hilarious, and Steve Carell as Michael Scott is just iconic. He brought so much depth to that character. I’ve been enjoying a mix of stand up specials and comedy podcasts. I’m particularly into Ali Wong’s latest work and podcasts like Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend always bring a good laugh. How about you? What’s been catching your attention in comedy lately? Boy?

You love Ali Wong. I’ve been into Tom Poppa’s podcast a little bit. Tom Poppa’s podcast is great. He’s got such a warm and relatable style. It’s always fun to hear his take on everyday life.

He’s just had an amazing list of guests. He had that run recently with Gaffigan and a Teale just I love the inside comedy inside baseball stuff. That sounds fantastic. Those deep dies into the comedy world with season guests like Gaffigan and Mattel are always a treat you get such great insights in behind the scenes stories, anything specific from those episodes that really stood out to you. I thought it was interesting that gaff again and Papa started talking about the possibility of a comedy bubble bursting, that they see bigger comedians pushing tickets a little harder than they had been.

The idea of a comedy bubble bursting is really interesting, especially with how the landscape has changed. It makes you think about how comedy consumption has evolved and how comedians are adapting. Do you think there’s something to that or is it more of a temporary shift. It’s interesting you see big comedians selling out huge arenas. There was a time when selling out Madison Square Garden was a big deal.

Now it seems like Madison Square Garden has sold out easily, which is kind of interesting. Even weird Al is playing MSG now comedians really filling up that arena. The tiktokization of comedy has let a lot of people break through at rapid speed. I think the club scene is pretty healthy. It just what we might be picking up from Pop and gaffigin is that the price point on tickets has gotten a little high, and maybe people don’t want to go to see comedians in arenas, like, for example, Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Gaffigan toured together.

That’s a great point. The rise of TikTok and social media definitely allows comedians to reach them of audiences quickly. It’s fascinating how the club scene remains strong while bigger venues are becoming more common. The ticket pricing might be a factor, especially with so many entertainment options available now. It’s a balancing ad for sure.

Seeing Seinfeld and gaffickan team up must have been quite the show. No, there’s an AI. Are you into any AI generated comedians? Do you have any material of your own? I don’t have any material of my own, but I do enjoy exploring AI generated humor and seeing how it evolves.

It’s interesting to see how AI can mimic comedic styles and create jokes, but nothing beats to creativity and nuance of human comedians. Do you follow any AI generated comedy or is it more about human performance for you? I mean, I like humans, but I think AI can do a good job. For example, give me five Late Night style jokes about Trump renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Sure so.

Trump wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America because when you think of America, you definitely think of renaming things that were already fine. Two. Renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Next he’ll rename tacos to freedom sandwiches. Three Trump renaming the Gulf of Mexico.

He’s just trying to build the wall around everything, including the water. Four. Rename me the Golf of Mexico’s the Gulf of America. Because if there’s one thing Americans love, it’s unnecessary rebranding. Five Trump renaming the Gulf of Mexico.

Caloroga Shark Media. Hello, I’m Johnny Mac with your Daily Comedy News. Another feisty one today. It’s topics this week other than SNL have just been different. But let’s start with Dave Chappelle big intention of getting headline.

Dave Chappelle says SNL producers forbade him from talking about gaza and trans people. The mainstream news reporting SF gates Senior culture editor Dan Gentila, who saw the comedian at the beginning of some recent appearances in San Francisco. According to Dan, Chappelle a ledges he was not allowed to speak about Gaza and transgender people. That said. On the SNL monologue, Dave did mention Palestine.

You may recall Chappelle said that the presidency is no place for petty people. So, Donald Trump, I know you watch the show Man. So the sf Gate article has been around for a few days. I didn’t catch it prepping the show because of all the SNL noise until today when I type the word Chappelle into Google, as I tend to do, That’s when all this came up. In the sf Gate story, Dan tells us Chappelle closed the first of the three shows with a very long story. Dan writes the anecdote began with a warning from Chappelle about conspiracy theories, then moved on to Atlanta, where the rapper t I, who joined Chappelle on stage in Oakland last November, took him on a tour of the city and introduced him to slain Los Angeles rapper Nipsey Hustle.

The story took a few choice and turns, touching on the FBI hip hop task force that monitored rappers in the nineties, Chappelle’s mentor Charlie Burnett and his battle with AIDS and a star studied Hollywood party coronating Hustle as the new king of hip hop just before his tragic murder. About ten minutes into the story, writes Dan, Chappelle noticed someone in the front row checking their watch Like that front row fan. I also felt a little bored at times. I’ve been a vocal critic of Chappelle over the years. Dan adds, I’m happy to report that Chappello has dropped his villain persona and that this time security didn’t confiscate my notebook, although it hit in a pen and paper in my shoe, just a case. He still makes a few jokes about San Francisco’s gay community, but at the Masonic they lacked the punching down vitriol that characterized his darker years, and they were always walked back with upbeat apologies. He called San Francisco his home away from home and softened a now iconic anecdote about how San Francisco needs a batman, quoting the Chapelle of the past, what the f happened to this place is now? I love your city, but you’ve got to admit it needs some sprucing up.

And when he caught the fan looking at his phone, Chappelle let out a self deprecating joke and quickened his pace. Dan then writes about the SNL story opened up the podcast with continuing there were a few other political trends. Chappelle briefly said Trump was wreaking havoc and in the Knight’s most surprising moment, got more cheers than Booze. When polling the audience on who voted for Trump, Dave revealed he had voted for Biden and twenty and Harrison twenty four, but he didn’t have anything else to say about the administration’s policies, just tired jokes about how Trump is a closeted homosexual. Dan editorializes a hard argument to make, given that he is legally considered a convicted rapist.

Chappelle spent more time making fun of former President Joe Biden than anything else, with a refrain about the Sleepy Joe nickname that just sounded tired. More than any other topic. Chappelle spent most of the night talking about his famous buddies, mostly Kanye West. Kanye recently insulted Chappelle in a series of angry and anti semitic tweets, criticism that Chappelle seemed to brush off, emphasizing that they’d overcome previous feuds. Dan continues, there’s a fun sense of voyeurism into hearing Chappelle recount phone conversation with Kanye and his experiences rubbing elbows with Jay Z and Snoop Dogg at parties.

And despite Chappelle’s immense celebrity, he’s still able to sound like a wide eyed outsider to fans. But there was an elephant in the room, Elon Musk, who Chappelle once brought on stage at the Chase Center, but whose name wasn’t spoken once. If Chappelle wants to make his relationships to stars the centerpiece of the show, well there’s one who is literally pontificating from the Oval office his day cruising Atlanta. T I sounded fun, but I’d much rather hear what he has to say about Musk’s Department of Government efficiency. This is a great piece by Dan, who tells us after the show, fans took refuge from the rain under the marble columns.

I overheard a woman remarked that the show felt like story time, that Chappelle’s anecdotes were lulling her to sleep. Does Dave need to go away for a while? Is that what I’m picking up here? That the act is getting tired, the materials getting tired, and he won what the Grammy three years in a row? Maybe he needs to just not be in the spotlight for a minute.

Maybe, Dan writes for a storyteller is gifted and insightful of chappelle show felt like he was on autopilot rather than picking up the mantle. As one of the world’s most incisive cultural critics, what are this role as his responsibilities? Up for debate, but it’d likely say no, really, really good piece there, Dan, Oh my, I just checked the clock. Was there a long opening story? Ah?

It’s been good. A lot of content Lately all Right, Dana Carvey’s account tweeted to promote the podcast. The Twitter account did not address when I looked why Dana was not at SNL fifty in Variety. They’re reporting that Dana had a bad flu, which prevented him from participating in the show. That would make sense if he wasn’t well enough to travel.

It would be weird if there were another reason, considering Carvey had been on the show a lot this fall, so I don’t want anyone to ever have the flu. But you know, I hope that’s the reason he missed, as opposed to something more nefarious. Yet, Well soon, Dana Carvey. I was in a bit of a panic. I was like, did I get to George Lopez story wrong?

Did George Lopez even put out a special on Amazon on Tuesday? Because there’s no press about it? I once again typed to George Lopez into Google. There’s nothing I actually went on Amazon. I’m like, does this special exist?

Or did I get the date wrong? Oh? No, it exists, it’s out. I didn’t watch it yet. Tuesday night, I was watching Paradise on Hulu.

Yeah, where did this come from? Chichen Chong’s Last Movie will be out on four to twenty. If you know, you know. This is a buddy comedy documentary hybrid chronicling the career of Cheech and Chong. The official description Chichen Chong’s Last Movie great title, by the way, because of what they titled their other movies.

Chich and Chong’s Last Movie defines documentary expectations, offering a wildly imaginative take on genre convention. A true life tale, It’s sold through a mix of animation and arcival madness, all underscored by a classic cinematic road trip comedy tracing the enduring legacy of pioneering comics Cheech Marin and Tommy Chung. The film features interview sketches and never before seen footage spanning the duo’s five decade career. I went to pull the audio, and the mix of just overlap clips and naughty language made me say, you know what, It’s not worth playing the trailer on an audio podcast. But in the trailer you would see at Cheech and Chong driving through the desert in a black Cadillac with a marijuana leaf hood ornament. She says, you sure we’re going the right way. Cheong says we’re in the middle of nowhere. She says, no, we’re southwest of nowhere.

We’re not in the middle yet, people are upset. Tom Hanks. You may have seen Tom Hanks in a comedy sketch on Saturday Night Live. Tom Hanks played a Donald Trump supporter. In the sketch, the character’s body language suggested that the character was scared to shake a black man’s hand.

You remember her. She was part of SNL from eighty six to ninety two, and she was there on Sunday, which is great because I know she’s had a lot of health problems. She slammed the sketch at an interview with TMZ, calling it stupid. She also claims she was offended by the show’s sexual vulgarity and crude jokes. I’m trying to rack my brain about what that could be.

Maybe that last sketch where Eddie Murphy got a little naughty, Victoria Jackson asked TMZ, did anyone make fun of the Kamala supporters? Hanks had previously played the character named Doug who wears a Make America Great Again hat. Hanks played that role on a twenty sixteen Black Jeopardy sketch, which I recall being very well received. Victoria Jackson pointed to a Twitter post from political commentator Link. Lauren Link wrote, this show wonders why they’re ratings are in the gutter.

Trump won the popular vote. SNL is an unfunny show for snobbish liberal elites. The current Republican Party is a big tent coalition compromised of many former Democrats. Good riddance, SNL. I don’t know what good riddance means.

Variety reports NBC’s fiftieth anniversary special for SNL had fourteen point eight million viewers, So I’m not sure I agree with the link’s sentiment that their ratings are in the gutter. Good luck becoming less and less culturally relevant by the second.

If you’re curious, google Trevor Noah. It’ll take me a minute to unpack that one. W come out Bell explain to NPR why he played the Kennedy Center After several entertainers have severed ties with the Kennedy Center. Some folks are upset that President Trump has assumed the chairmanship of the Kennedy Center. Bell told NPR, I think Joe Biden was still running for president when the show was booked, so like this wasn’t connected to any of this.

Trump had already said he was going to take over, but nobody knew what that meant. So on the flight to Washington, d C. I got the Wi Fi as I always do, when I started getting emails and text for people about doing a show at Kennedy Center, and was like a clear sense of like, oh, something’s happened. You know, I did a show three years ago in one of the smaller room, so I have a lot of respect for the Kennedy Center. And you can’t help but feel like how cool it is to be there, even as an audience member.

You sort of feel like a bonafid winner at the Kennedy Center. There’s something about like nobody’s going to tell me I’m not an artice of know ite ever again. You know, NPR said, so you and the comedian new open for you join Kennedy made jokes about the whole situation. He said something like welcome to the last time two black guys are going to be at the Kennedy Center. And you said something along the lines of my kids like to eat every day, so that’s why I’m here.

But seriously, did you ever think about canceling? Belle said, I mean, so the people the Kennedy Center reached out because they were sort of almost preparing for me to cancel. But for me, I’m connected to it as a black to all this history and my family of showing up, so I knew there was never a point at which I thought about not showing up. But let’s remember, the Kennedy Center is in a city called Washington, d C. So as much as MAGA runs the White House, maybe they don’t run Washington, DC.

And Washington d C. Has always been a bright blue progressive place. If you want to move to the White House to Branson, Missouri, understandably you would program the Kennedy Center in a different way. If the Kennedy Center called me this week and said you want to do a show at the Kennedy Center, that might have been a different decision. I might still have done it, but it’s a different decision.

I’ve been planning this for months you know what I mean. And so on some level it’s like either performer want to do the thing I’ve been looking forward to. There’s part of me that knows my audience, specifically in times of stress and pain and controversy, actually wants to hear from me. And some of it is about showing up and being my full self, as my mom taught me, as the Bay Area raised me to be, as I want my kids to see me being in that space at that time. Good stuff from Bell here, he says.

My whole career, at least for the last fifteen years or so, it has been about earning a living, but also making sure it’s easier for the person behind me. He either looks like me or is aligned with me. For me, I have to be loud and to be clear as possible for the people who can’t be out and clear, and I’ve got to take care of my family. But that does mean that sometimes, and I’ve done this for years, turn down things that were gonna pay me because I can’t be over there, because I don’t think over there I can be myself. They’ll continue and people say stay in your lane, and we go no, no, no, your lane.

What can you do in that lane that you’re already in that can help make it easier on somebody who can’t do the work that you can do. That’s where it starts. People are like, I’m going to go back to law school. No, no, no, no, what are you doing now? I’m going to start a nonprofit?

No no, no, no, what are you doing now? And how can you start making that lane more equitable, more inclusive, more diverse where you are. Apparently, Marlon also doesn’t like Soldier Boy selling bitcoin, paraphrasing the lyrics, ain’t rappin’, just gaming and selling people crappy coins. He’s a mess without a chest. His only hit with Superman now he ain’t got nothing left. Twitter user kazin six commented, never argue with the comedian.

This apparently goes back to January. You see Soldier Boy performed at the Crypto Ball in Washington, d C. Which was a celebration of Donald Trump’s presidential win. Marlin apparently supported a different candidate and sold one oh one point one the Whiz, I mean Soldier Boy. He even canceled.

Nobody cares about Soldier Boy, so Soldier Boy better go out and get that check. He don’t care. I think they thought it was a bitcoin event. They found out it was a ball for him, and it was too late to pull out. But you know that’s why you got to check the fine print.

Soldier Boy apparently didn’t appreciate the comments said on the Wiz. Soldier Boy tweeted, and I’m paraphrasing here, I’ll urinate on your mother’s grave. I’ll dig your mom up and kill that B word again. Last week, Soldier Boy made fun of Marlin’s role as an FBI agent in White Chicks, posting words like and I’m paraphrasing here. I can’t believe I’m marguing with a fella that dressed up like a white B word.

WTF is wrong with me? Then Soljia wrote, and I’m quite paraphrasing here. Ain’t your son a transit that performs favors at Marlon Wayans In his latest interview with TMZ, Morland said that the rapper could join in the reboot of Scary Movie as a crack and a meth head all mixed together. He also made fun of Soldier Boy’s teeth. In a TMZ reel, Morland said, I need someone who looks like a wet muppet.

I want someone that looked like they sell your car, rob you, and perform a favor a man would enjoy, all at the same time Soldier Boy. On February twelfth, Soldier Boy tweeted a Google search Engine screenshot showing two twenty twenty three articles from TMZ and Men’s Journal about Marlon embracing his child’s sexuality. Soljier Boy captured his post something that I can’t even bearaphrase, but ended it with it’s in your blood. Wayns responded, if Soljier Boy had a career, he’d get canceled for this type of slander. Like when in the first week shooting myth. Being at SNL as a writer taught me to read the news and not have an emotional reaction to it.

It’s like I’ve trained my brain to read and think, Okay, what’s funny about that. It’s almost like training herself to be a psychopath. One day, I was sitting at the Comedy Cellar talking to Ryan Hamilton about it, and he was like, you should just shoot some now and shoot them later and then put it together. And I was like, why don’t I do that?

Then I was like, what if I shot it the same way, in the same place and the same color outfit on the same stage, but one year later, and I’d sort of just be reporting for the people, like half journalism. Lauren apparently said that Sam’s style of comedy is too strident and political for his show. Sam told the Daily Beast podcast, I mean, literally, imagine calling anyone strident when you’ve built a career out of elevating the loudest guy in the room.

We have our biases, we have our people we like better than others, but you can’t be Samantha Bee. How about John Oliver? Late Nighter points out that Max gave in and they’re putting last week Tonight clips back on YouTube in olden times, they would post the main story on YouTube on Mondays. There was a time I didn’t have HBO Max and that’s how I would consume it. They had stopped doing that and wouldn’t release the clips until Thursday. At that time, John Oliver’s that he was annoyed by the YouTube delay, calling it massively frustrating, and added I was not happy with it at all.

What I love about having the show on YouTube is we can reach beyond HBO subscribers. That feels really important to me. I really really appreciate the fact that they do that. I would rather they did it straight after the show the way we’ve always done it, but I’m very grateful they’re willing to still do it at all. Well, it is back on Mondays now, so that’s good.

Now, something must be going on because Oliver, you know, he appeared on The Daily Show last week. Now he went on Colbert that combined with the clips coming out on Mondays again, somebody seeing something. It’s the metrics are down, or they’re noticing John Oliver’s not in the national conversation as much as he could be. Something is motivating a publicity campaign. Really interesting anyway, Oliver was on Colbert Monday Night.

Stephen said, you’re a recent citizen. How do you feel you’re still gonna stick it out? A You’re gonna head back to England? John said, oh no, I’m sticking it out. I’m going down with the Titanic.

I know there might be life rafts available, but I’m tuning up. And they started to play a fake violin. I don’t know how surprised you were about any of this. All of this was pretty much foreseeable. Oliver encourages the recent protest.

Will worked off notes people believe, possibly a script. During his set, Will Arnett reportedly joked about his recent divorce. Arnett is working on a film with Bradley Cooper directing. The film was called Is This Thing On? The movie, which also stars Sean Hayes and Lord Dern, reportedly features Bradley Cooper in a supporting role with Will Arnett as a comedian navigating divorce and a career change.

Jerry Seinfeld would have made front page news if not for Saturday Night Live. But we will start with SNL fifty and I’ll do the other stories in the second half of the podcast. Steve Martin did a great job on his monologue, reminding us he was one of the top stand ups before he went into being more of an actor. Steve showed up thirdday night at the Comedy Seller in New York to work out his material. TMZ says Martin short and John mlaney joined Steve on stage and participated in the bit, which makes sense because that’s what happened on stage on SNL, also doing surprise performances. Listen to this listen. They all did about ten to fifteen minutes of material.

David Spade, Chris Rock, Ray Romano, The Not So Canceled Disease. I’m sorry, Colin Quinn, Naperghetzi, Leslie Jones, and Marcelo Hernandez. I’d love to know more about the Marcelo set because I’m not bashing the guy, but he’s only shown me one look like if you were a baseball pitcher, he throws fastballs. I want to see what else you can do, Marcelo. I like you, but you do one thing.

Blah blah blah. The drunken antics that occurrent after party is her legendary. Kristin Wigg admitted to Jimmy Found that she chipped her too at the after party following her final show in twenty twelve.

Adye Bryant confessed she once blocked out and fell asleep in her apartments hallway. Kate McKinnon said her hair once got stuck on a Woody Harrisons sweater button for twenty minutes. At the Sunday Night party, Woody Harrison was wearing a tied eye that someone has inexplicably and indecipherably signed with a shirpie Volks person asked Woody who signed your tie, and wood he said, thanks, Perhaps he was well hydrated. Who knows Adam Sandler was wearing a succeedo Folks says, the person with the most Sandler like outfit is not Sandler at all, but Jason Sedakis, who was wearing a hoodie in a baseball cap. Vogue then tells us what everybody else was wearing doesn’t really interest me, as I sit here in an oversized sweatshirt.

Jj abrams high five’s Keith Richards, Kim Kardashian and listens to Bow and Yang by the bar. Peter Dinklage lounges with Natasha Leon and Chris rock. Lorne Michael sits at a table in the back room with Alec Baldwin, Olivia Munn and John Mulaney hold hands the entire night. Steve Martin and Catherine o’harris sit on a couch right by the first floor entrance even though most people on a third floor. As the band played on and the ballroom at the Plaza became even more packed, it was clear that for many people here he would be an icky blue light night.

You may have noticed in the Good Nights that somebody was holding up a picture of Gilda Radner. The people holding up Gildo where Loraene Newman and Jeene Curtin. Some people were curious who wasn’t there, and there was one really really suspicious person not there.

I’ll get to No, it’s not Dan Ackroyd. Late Nighter points out that Akroid’s been laying groundwork for this for months. Late Nighter sourced an interview with Akroyd last August. Dan was asked about SNL fifty and said, for me, it’s going to be a great night of television because I think it starts at eight thirty. I personally would like to be at home watching it because if I was there, I’m going to miss a great night of television.

I’d get a viewing party together wherever I am in the world. And watch it. That’s really what I think I’m going to be doing. Ackroyd had said something similar to the av Club several months later when asked if he would attend, Well, it depends on how and when I’m invited. I guess it depends on how I can serve.

Let me put it that way. How can I serve them best? How can I serve Lauren and the whole enterprise best? That’ll determine whether I go or not. There doesn’t seem to be any bad blood.

Dan tweeted over the weekend, I’m so proud of being associated with my comedy Alma mater and it’s Dean Lorne Michaels. Friday night at the homecoming concert, it was a tribute to the Blues Brothers led by Jimmy Fallon Puck News, Matthew Baloney had mentioned that Bill Hayter was a quote polite decline. Now that notable name who wasn’t there Dana Carvey, Which is weird because Dana Carvey was in a ton of episodes in the first half of the season. It’s not like he wasn’t you know. At thirty Rock Late Nighter points out Dana has not spoken out about the milestone anniversary on any social media platform.

I wonder what’s going on there that’s interesting to me. All this SNL media, I think did a favor to Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry was asked by a social media influencer if he would take a selfie. Let’s listen to what happened, Jerry, Can I get a selfie? Sure?

Free Palestine. I don’t care about foul plot. So you’re seeing a couple headlines about that, but I think there would have been a lot more if not for all the SNL noise. Vulture did an article every single thing that happened at SNL fifty. I started to read it and then I’m like, let me just do this live because I think it’s interesting and I want to react to it.

Because the first thing I saw was from Jesse David Fox, who I guess tweeted if anyone watching tries to read the tea leaves for who’s taking over for Lorne. Almost every sketch was from Seth Meyers’s time as head writer, or was by someone Myers hired, say for Debbie Downer and Domingo. That’s interesting, Jesse again, head writers from the last twenty five years missing from the credits Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider, Rob Klein, Ana Drezzen, Adam McKay, Harper Steele. Vulture points out Tom Schulders Don’t Look Back in Anger is the only retro sketch shown in full at SNL fifty. That’s the one with Belushian old age makeup.

Bethy Squire’s points out no inclusion of Trump or Elon in the problematic guest segments. Huh either. It was interesting they didn’t do any politics. I get if you don’t want to get into Trump during the SNL fifty, totally get it. But like Daryl Hammond doing Clinton wouldn’t have been the worst thing.

Ferrell doing George w wouldn’t been the worst thing. I don’t know herschel Pandu wrote, how is it that Lauren doesn’t watch this musical sketch that’s the millenie musical. It’d say this doesn’t play to all fifty states. I don’t think they cared my take watching it, I felt like I was at the Groundlings in la and they were celebrating themselves. Now I say that, having attended the Groundlings thirtieth anniversary show, is that math right, maybe it was the twentieth, twenty fifth.

Anyway, long time ago, I went to one of the anniversary shows and they were just paying tribute to themselves, and I felt like, that’s what SNL did on Sunday night. They were celebrating themselves and we were allowed to watch. I don’t think they tried to hand in the greatest episode of SNL at all time. I think there was some backslapping there. Well, earned no problem with it, but I think that’s what we were watching.

Jesse David Fox points out the American Girls Store cutaway with John Lovetz was pre recorded. Lovetz was actually sitting with Sarah Sherman in the audience before the show. Kevin Elon caught up with Fox News. Kevin said, when I started, comedy was totally different. It was a totally different time in generation, and it was not as much short attention span.

I can look back at some of the sketches on SNL and they’re a lot longer than they are now because of the short attention span. I also the comedy may have gotten a little more snarkier. People want snippets more and more and more as quickly as possible. It’s like a buffet. He got into these kids today.

I think without social media, these comics wouldn’t be known, they wouldn’t be selling out arenas. John Lovett’s echoed those sentiments, telling Fox News Digital he believes stand up comedy is bigger than ever. Steve Martin was the first guy to play like arenas and stadiums, and then years later was Andrew Dice Clay, and then years after that it was Dane Cook. Lovetz then talked to Midnight and said, you know, they’ve become way more political than they used to be. I know those guys, they’re all extremely nice, and they’re all very talented and very funny, but they’re focusing on politics.

There were some technical snaffoos across the country. The show ran long now I saw from late nighter Sunday, I don’t know, around five PM or so. Late nighter had reported that NBC had told the affiliates, we’re gonna run over. So I’m sitting in the basement watching uh Hulu The Shield and giseh’re Currius have been rewatching the Shield. Love the Shield.

Michael Chickliss, founding member of the Macpac We’ve talked about this, so I knew the show was gonna run over. The show got cut off in at least Detroit. In Houston, Bob Ellis is the general manager of WDIV Channel four, Michigan. He put out a statement, Now I need you to pay really, really, really really really close attention to the statement. I know the best way to address the error last night with the ending of the Saturday Night Live fiftieth Anniversary special was with you directly pay attention. We sincerely apologize for cutting short the SNL special. This was not an intentional programming decision. It was simply human error, and we understand your disappointment. NBC had communicated to us Friday afternoon that the live show would run long with the scheduled end time of eleven fifteen pm.

We had our technical teams ready for this planned fifteen minute overrun. When the show ran even later, we didn’t make the real time adjustments, and that’s why the final thirteen minutes were missed. Let me translate for you. That means we programmed the automation to cut off at eleven fifteen because that’s what the network told us, and it never occurred to us that it might go over and nobody was on duty. All you had to do is pay a board up.

That’s what happened there. In my humble opinion, Bob Ellis writes, well you didn’t see included a performance by Sir Paul McCartney, who sang a medley of three songs from the Beatles Abbey Road album. We all dismissed the on stage goodbye led by Martin Short that included former cast members holding up a photo of detroiter Gilda Radner. Okay, now let me reread the middle of bob Ellis’s statement. Huh, it’s almost the exact same statement, except for the adjustment for the time zone. That’s weird. Lawyers in other news, Decider with a wonderful headline abysmal Kevin Hart special interrupted by sporadic basketball Decider writes, I thought I was being smart when I turned the NBA All Star Game on thirty minutes late NBA tip off times a notoriously far afield of what is promised by TV listings that I wasn’t eager to spend any more time than was absolutely necessary watching pregame ceremonies were listening to Kevin Hart talk, eight thirty seemed like a good time to tune in, even if it meant I might end up missing the first few minutes of the first game. When the TV flicked on, the game end started yet and Kevin Hart was screaming at me.

We can’t blame everything on Kevin Hard here, but we can definitely get pretty close. He was installed as the in game mc and Heart seemed to be under the impression that because he and Lebron James pretended to like each other in commercials, he is a rapport with every star player in the NBA. The ARENASBA system was turned over to him for portions of each game, which he used to attempt what I guess you would call NBA themed roast comedy as performed by a guy who doesn’t seem to watch the NBA. He kept complaining about how the big men were shooting too many threes and demanding that they get in the box, delivering that uncanny collection of words as if they were a hilarious punchline. The cider continues.

I then watched an hour long episode of a TV show and return to the broadcast to discover I had only missed the second minigame. Then there was more of the second halftime show to come, more commercials, and then more of Kevin Hart vamping at mid court. Eventually, the final game started, and after a few minutes of play, it was paused so that Heart could lead a drawn out ceremony honoring the cast of Inside the NBA, who aren’t dying, but merely moving to another network next season. Now if you need a sense of how bad this was, I pulled a clip. The clip I’m going to play for you is the clip that the NBA spotlighted.

So this isn’t some caddy fan going Kevin Hort sucks. So let me pull a clip. This is the one the NBA thinks is good. Okay, So this is the best one in the opinion of the NBA. The first voice you will hear is Ernie Johnson.

On Amazon Today, George Lopez Mui Kotaliko premiere is Across the Hour. George shares his reflections on aging, Latino family dynamics and cultural quirks. As I’ve said every time I’ve read that line, George Lopez doing George Lopez things. He also embraces the challenges of getting older and touches on generational clashes and Latino superstitions. George is retiring from comedy and said it’s the last one I’ve subjected the American people to.

Enough of my crap. Seems like the right time. It’s been the one thing that has never left me my whole life, and it’s a wonderful place to leave it at this particular point now. Last week, George was on The Jennifer Hudson Show. People were surprised George in the past has worn his hair short.

On the Jennifer Hudson Show, he was rocking bushy gray hair, and fans on Twitter were much funnier than the Kevin Hart NBA appearance. One person wrote, he looks like when trees come to life and tell stories. Another made a Harry Potter reference, he looks like he’s about to tell Harry that he’s a wizard. But my favorite, he looks like if Einstein discovered four loco. The Lopez Press has got people talking about that time George Lopez got a kidney from his now ex wife.

George was told by doctors in two thousand and four he needed a kidney transplant. In two thousand and five, the Lopezes made headlines when it was revealed that wife Anne had given George the gift of life by donating one of her kidneys. They got divorced a couple of years later, So back to George Lopez’s current look. One person tweeted, George Lopez took that lady’s kidney and then divorced her. That’s why he looks like that good.

Another rote George Lopez looks awful, but he actually deserves to look even more hideous for dumping his wife after she donated her kidney to him. Both parties say the split was amicable and by mutual agreement, and poor Rosebud Baker, She’s got a special out today on Netflix. Rosebud you are like twenty minutes into Daily Comedy News. Often the special will be the first thing I feel bad for you. Hopefully you get some press later in the week, but it is crowded today anyway.

The Mother from Rosebud Baker is this week’s Netflix special. Taped months apart during two sold out nights at the Comedy Seller, New York. The special intercuts between Baker before and after giving birth. Her set discusses the indignities of childbirth, the pros and cause of losing your identity in motherhood, generational divides of upbringings, along with coming to the difficult decision to retire from doing nice things for your male friend. And I’ll leave it at that.

Caloroga Shark Media. Hey there, I’m Johnny Mac, and I find myself on this Monday morning thinking a lot about SNL fifty and how much I liked it. This is a bonus episode. This is just me, you and clips. I know I said I would do a full recap on Tuesday.

That is still the plan. As the day goes on today, I’ll do my normal show prep and see what everyone else is saying and what happened backstage and on the red carpet. And I’ve already got some clips pulled for that, and there’s some other news I already see this morning. But this is just my reaction to last night’s show, which I liked a lot. A bunch of us were hanging out in the Facebook group Daily COmON News podcast group.

Early on the show was struggling a little bit. There were a couple sketches that fell flat. But once it got into the second half, really starting with maybe the News, maybe Adam Sandler, it really hit a groove and I feel really good about it. We open up with an interesting choice that personally I didn’t think the energy was there. I get it for the legacy of this show.

Paul Simon and Sabrina Carpenter opened up singing. Paul Simon mentioned he was about to play a song it performed on the show with George Harrison in nineteen seventy six. Sabrina got a laugh, saying I wasn’t born then, and neither were my parents. The song is fine. I don’t know what I was looking for for the open, maybe something a little more up tempo.

Anyway, we get into the monologue and Steve Martin comes out and reminds us you know I was I wrote in the group you forget that Steve Martin was one of the great stand up comedians. Here is a piece of Steve Martin’s monologue. Good evening and welcome to the fiftieth anniversary up Saturday Night Live. I’m Steve Martin, Saturday Night Lives, Newest, Diversity Higher, and what a thrill it is to be here. When I heard that SNL wanted to do an anniversary special, I literally wanted to leap into the air.

And the only reason I didn’t is because at the time I was wearing a short skirt with no underwear. Now I can’t believe, I can’t believe I even made it here In time. It was only a few days ago. The lorne told me I was doing the monologue, and I was actually vacationing on a friend’s boat down in the Gulf of Steve Martin, and I finally. Steve then brings out Mullaney, and boy, Mullaney had a killer night, which is just incredible when you think of the amount of talent in the room.

And mulaney was a writer for SNL but not a performer on SNL. But John crushed twice during the night. Here’s one of those times he crushed. John Mulaney. I didn’t know you were even gonna be here.

Oh you would if you’d ever come to rehearsal. By the way, congratulations on the Emmy win. Nope, Emmy nomination, Nope, Grammy win, no Grammy nomination, no Golden Globe win, no Golden Globe nomination. There you go, yes, sir, thank you. You know, we writers really appreciated that tribute.

But I believe that the heart and soul of this show is the celebrity hosts, many of whom are in this room tonight. You know, as I look around, I see some of the most difficult people I have ever met in my entire life. Over the course of fifty years, eight hundred and ninety four people have hosted Saturday Night Live, and it amazes me that only two of them have committed murder. We get into the sketches and they do Black Jeopardy, which reminds us just how strong Keenan Thompson just quietly goes about his business and is an MVP. But Eddie Murphy came out.

So on Black Jeopardy we had Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, and then Eddie Murphy in a character in let’s listen to what character Eddie Murphy did. He look at this Tracy Morgan gonna make some big money. Wow, Now wait a minute, Tracy, don’t you already have a lot of money. But you gotta have a lot of money if you’re gonna live like I live. I eat four cheese, Lasagnia.

I only got three cheeses. I ain’t eating it. Yes, okay, we hear you. Tracy Moore, I refuse to ingest three Jesus, you’re four Jesus. We got, Tracy Morgan.

Thank you. Absolute crush for Eddie. I’ll come back to Eddie in a bit. Then the show hit a bit of a lull with some sketches missing, a pretty early one. I’m trying to remember the particklers of it.

It was at a wedding and it just didn’t fly. Eventually, Amy Poehler and Tina Fay came out really fun segment and they got one of the biggest laughs of the night. Here, I have a question. Oh hey, right, how’s it going? Great?

Bhye, what do you heard? Excellent timing by Ryan Reynold. It’s really great. And for anyone who heard the earlier episode this morning and misconstrues that I don’t like Julia Louis Dreyfus, I love Julia Louis Dreyfus. What I was talking about this morning, it’s at the end of the show.

Variety did a list best TV performances of the twenty first century and they have Julia and Viepez number one. And I said, that’s crazy talk, and I stand by it. But she’s the MVP of Seinfeld. She’s fantastic. And here she is in the audience and she has a dog sitting next to her.

You really need that dog, right, Celia, Oh no, no, no, I’m here for him. He’s blind. So Ricky the Blonde woman who just talked. That’s Amy Poehler and the older woman next to hers team up very very funny, one of my favorite parts of the night. We were also keeping track at that point in the show.

They hadn’t gone really too far back in the cast, and at that point Julia was The Weekend Update was solid. Seth Meyers took a turn at the desk along with jo Justin Jay Seth seemed very very comfortable at the desk, and then Bill Murray showed up and he ranked the all time Weekend Update anchors jump in here at number two. Number two is Norm McDonald. He may have been the best. Ever, but more importantly, he made me, for one, ask the question of myself, could oj possibly have done it?

So that brings us to number one? Colin got a good feeling about this, Okay, Number one is funny, got a great smile, and he’s currently sleeping every kind of way with the lovely actress Scarlett Johanson. Of course I’m talking about my brother Bryan. At that point. It made me comment in the Facebook group that everybody was playing to the back of their baseball card.

What I meant was Bill Murray was playing to the level you would expect of Hall of Famer Bill Murray and Marcelo Hernandez. That’s a pick on him specifically, But Marcelo does one thing over and over and over and over. I’d like to see what else he can do. But he does that one thing, and he played to the back of his baseball card when he was on the show. He did his one thing twice.

But if you look at everybody else, Eddie Murphy played to Eddie Murphy’s baseball card, Polar and Fay to theirs, Will did Will Ferrell things. Everybody else was just right in the zone. Around then, I started to think, Hey, no Sandler yet, he’s kind of a superstar. Whether or not I find him funny or not, he’s a superstar in this environment. Where is he?

And I thought, Oh, he’ll do some sort of name check song in that Sandler style looking at the fifty years, And sure enough he did it. Let me tell you, I’m a known not to like Adam Sandler comedy and I don’t really enjoy his songs. He nailed this here. I’ll pick it up in the back half. The names you don’t recognize are some of the crew members.

I gotta tell you he touched that emotional beats. You know, I might add something in my eye, Adam Sailor, you nailed this one. Five years of chan Hooks and Guild, the sixth of Victoria, eleven of jan three years of Melanie hud So, Michael mckeinn crushed it into one of Billie Crystal, six of Dennis Miller, eight of harm. In the Blue, seven years of Tratching Way, five years though Terry and Quinn, four of Kazzariski clague on eleven of a Harmcide, fourteen years of Davis and Hanny Chiller is spinal Like twenty five eighteen Lodi and Damie Wilson, plus among and disc going buny Man, thirty years of down Here. Forty five years of Lord, six years of our boy Farley, five of our Body No, fifty years of one of us getting to say live from New York, it’s Saturday night.

Fifty years of standing on home base waiting the night, and the. Fifty years of the best times of our life. Great job, Adam Sandler. Something you won’t hear me say, two offered. All right, we’ll take the break here, we’ll come back.

So at this point the show is rocking when Tom Hanks came out and gave this speech. As we celebrate the achievements of the past fifty years, we must also take a moment to honor those who we’ve lost, countless members of the SNL family taking from us too soon. I’m speaking, of course, about SNL characters and sketches that have aged horribly. But even though these characters, accents and let’s just call them ethnic whigs were unquestionably in poor taste, you all laughed at them. So if anyone should be canceled, shouldn’t it be you the audience.

Fantastic montage there looking back at all the things that yeah, didn’t age so well. I think I have the sequence here right. I think it was. After that, there was a John Maliney musical sketch. Mullenie’s done a few of those over the past few years.

This one was really strong, the theme of it New York City throughout the decades. A Giuliani appearance, a really hilarious line by Mulani I didn’t pull it that I think was ad libbed. Sarah Sherman went into a Bloomberg impression and it wasn’t good, and m’laney said something along the lines of yeah, hey, great impression and got a good left there again for somebody who’s not part of the cast. Mullaney had one of the greatest nights. Very late in the show.

The last proper sketch, if I’m remembering correctly, was a scared straight sketch Eddie Murphy, once again proving he is the franchise MVP. You know, that’s a discussion for the other day. But I think Eddie is number one. Will might be number two, and I don’t want to discount Phil Hartman. Phil might be three.

You could probably convince me that he’s two over Will. But anyway, you have here in this sketch Eddie Murphy and Will Ferrell. This is a little naughty, so if you’re listening with kids, they probably won’t get the joke anyway, but consider yourself warned. I am surprised they went this dirty on over the air national television, but I think this aired even after eleven PM, so even if we want to get into the FCC of it all, we’re in safe harbor that late. Anyway, here’s Eddie Murphy.

That’s right, that’s right. And forget about your north pole. What you’re gonna need to be worried about is your south Pole, because. You’ll be yelling sort of a knockcracker. All right, it won’t be no Santna coming to town, and it’d be Santo’s coming in your brown No.

Garrett Morris came out and introduced the nineteen seventy eight short film Don’t Look Back in Anger Boy. This really hit the spot. I’ve seen this before, but last night it hit the spot. What Don’t Look Back in Anger is? It’s from nineteen seventy eight and it’s John Belushi, an old age makeup visiting the grave sites of everybody else from the initial cast.

They are all dead. Belushi talks about how he was always perceived as the one who would live fast and die young, and he has outlived all the other cast members. It was poignant and what a great way to address the original cast. I did feel the original cast was underrepresented. It was kind of a and it makes sense just because of how old everybody is, but it was sort of like the Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Victory Lap show, like that generation more than the older folks.

But the film really hit the spot. And that was late and then as we discussed in the group, there was nowhere to go from there. It was only gonna be down from there. So let’s bring out Paul McCartney and go home. And Paul McCartney came out and did Golden Slumbers and he’s Paul McCartney and even in his eighties, crushed it.

What a great way to go another commercial. We come back, we do the goodbyes. I’m sure someone else has analyzed the goodbyes. I was looking at it. I noticed McCartney was looking for someone to talk to.

I noticed Chris Rock was looking for someone to talk to. But it was eleven thirty at night and I wanted to go to bed. So nice job SNL fifty. You know, there were a couple of things that didn’t work. There was one thing with Lorain Newman and Pete Davidson that I honestly can’t believe made it to air other than they probably wanted to honor Lorain Newman.

But Pete was awful in it. You know, a couple of flat sketches early on, but once you got into the second half, it was really strong. And like I said, I’m feeling really good about it and thinking about it a lot today and I wanted to get this out pretty early in the day before the news gets moldy. Caloroga Shark Media. Hey there, I’m Hunning Mack with your Daily Comedy News. I will recap SNL fifty on tomorrow’s program. I just want to take a little time and put that one together. Should be a busy week.

George Lopez has a special out tomorrow. I imagine he’ll do a lot of press and George tends to throw heat in interviews, so we’ll see if he stirs it up. There was a clip on Thursday Night. People were kind of surprised how George looks these days with long gray hair, and maybe his weight had changed a little bit. People were like, what’s up with George Lopez?

So we’ll talk about him all week. Nate Brighetsi is in negotiations to star in Christmas in Paradise. That would be a holiday family comedy. Nate, if he signs on, would play a beloved small town doctor who finds himself with a unique bounty on his head just a week before Christmas in a town where everything is not as it seems now. I like Nate’s a lot and have liked Nate a lot for years.

I know he’s super popular right now, there’s nothing in his stage persona or interview persona that makes me think he would be a good actor. I hope to be wrong, but I read this and I’m like, is Nate actually going to be good in that? Who knows? Maybe he will surprise. The Ladly News caught up with Russell Peters.

He’s Canadian, and they were curious, what do you think about this idea to make Canada the fifty first state Canadian? Russell Peters said, it’s not like it’s a real option. It wasn’t on the table. It’s just something that they put out there. In Ether people are acting like that’d be great, while Canadian’s like, what the f are you talking about?

It’s almost like the movie in Decent Proposal. The problem is you put it out there and then people think it’s real. Americans don’t realize that they’re insular in their way of thinking. The rest of the world looks at you guys and goes, they’re stupid, aren’t they. Americans keep doing things like this and believing it, and then the rest of the world goes, Wow, what a sad fall from Greece.

Send your letters to Russell Peters, who also commented on Kendrick versus Drake Russell, I mean congratch to Kendrick, but it was never a real beef. To me. It was a beef, but it was like a battle. There was nothing hip hop about it because it was literally two guys arguing about who’s a bad father and a husband. It had nothing to do with hip hop, and it was corny to me as a hip hop had It was good for Kendrick on a certain level.

Kendrick probably wouldn’t have had that record if he wasn’t in the middle of that war with Drake, So in a very strange way, Kendrick should thank Drake for all those Grammys. Russell says, I’ve been part of the hip hop culture since about eighty two. That’s when I first got introduced to it, and it shaped the way I act and look at the people I hung around with. It’s funny when you say hip hop, people will only think about music like rapping, but so many things make it hip hop. If you’re talking about rapping, then you’re talking about rap music, which is part of it, but not the only element.

The four elements of hip hop are take notes. Everybody got out of Penn’ll give you second here, you got pen, you got a piece of paper, okay, notesapp nopesap works just fine. The four elements of hip hop are breaking, DJing, rapping, and graffiti. Russell says, for me, it started with break dancing. I got into breaking, graffiti and DJing.

I never rapped, but could always appreciate it. His favorite hip hop era is anywhere from eighty eight to nine nine, a really solid run. I’m very East Coast and very Tri State area oriented. So when people ask me what do you think about so and so? I go now, I can’t listen to that accident Like Kendricks.

I don’t like the sound of his voice. Can you rhyme? Probably? Can you write some songs? Probably?

But can I listen to him? No? There are certain rappers whose voices I don’t like. I never like Tupacs. Then there are guys who had great voices and terrible rhymes.

It goes both ways again. Send your letters to Russell Peters via Canada. La Times asked Gianmarco Soresi, Sirissi, friend of the podcast, as a headliner, can you get darker because the crowd is there for you? But do you also worry about getting cheap laughs? Great question, Gianmarco Soresi said, I have some material in this special that involves feeling suicidal and having a friend who’s suicidal.

If I’d done that in a ten minute club set, people would be like, geez, I just want to have a good Friday night. What are you doing? But my fans know my point of view and like darker things, so I can explore these topics. But almost every comedian, even the greats, gradually get worse. One factor is performing for your fans who like you and will laugh even at a failed joke.

You lose the fear about keeping attention and having to write something so sharp. He addressed the physicality of his comedy and said, stand up in such a tricky art form because you can feel like a try hard. In the beginning, you could have accused me of being theatrical without the jokes to back it up. I got labeled as two to one man show at one club, which was frustrating. But for me, it’s pretty natural.

When attension is thrust upon me, a flamboyant emerges. I’m trying to lean into that without exaggerating it, always asking how can this be funny and serve the storytelling? As my stages literally get bigger, I look at the real estate and think after use it for something, what can I use the stool or the mic stand for in a way that doesn’t feel overly choreographed, but still adds a dimension that a lot of comics of the generation above me veered away from. Really really interesting, really smart. Felipe Esparza in that great Icon versus Icon interview from last week that I shared the Facebook group probably a week ago now Daily Comedy News podcast group, he talked about learning a lesson from a more veteran comic who told him always go over my set.

He told me to carry a tape recorded or record my sets and carry a note bad so I could write down any joke that came to me. As soon as a joke it comes to you, write it down. I did that for a long time. Now I have my phones, I just record my set and write down my ideas. There’s some things that I always have taken with me.

You know, for many comedians, it’s hard for them to listen to their own voice after one hour set or after performing seven shows in a row. But you really have to go home on your day off and listen to all seven shows. A lot of comics that they don’t like doing that they don’t like recording their set, they just remember to write it down on paper. For me, I like doing all that stuff. I like recording my set, listening to it, and then writing down the new jokes that night or new moment that was funny.

I’ll listen to those sets all day long. I might listen to the same show four or five times before I start taking notes. I like doing that as part of my creative process. What a fantastic job by Icon versus Icon. They got great stuff out of Felipe.

They’re curious when he feels he came into his own as performer. Felipe said, I think in the last couple of years. If you’ve seen my set on Last Comic Standing, when I won, I was still kind of deadpan and nervous on stage. What I have now is a lot more confidence. That’s something I didn’t have when I first started.

Right now, I want to say I’m fearless. I’ve done shows in Australia all over the world. I’ve been building the confidence. In the beginning, I was nervous man, a comedian would kill the room, absolutely destroy where after the comics left the stage, people are still thinking about that set. So Back in the day when I was following that, it would really throw me off my set.

Not anymore, man. I just look at my wife with her large assets. You know what, It’s not that dirty. I just look at my wife with her big ass boobs, and I know I’ve made it. I just feel confident, bro.

I feel like all these buff guys are flexing their muscles, but then I take out my trench coat and have muscles too. I’m gonna win the crowd over basically without trying. I don’t know what that is. I guess it comes from all the experience. I’m doing it a long time, all right.

Hannibal Burs has been working on opening a club. He has announced the official grand opening of his new space Sunday, March ninth. Hannibal will do musical and comedy sets and be joined by special guests. A press release says Essue Tuesdays will happen once a month, starting in March. A press release describes that as a high energy night of music, comedy, and improv featuring a log band and special musical guests.

No dates on that other than the concept of a Tuesday. Annibal says getting this venue open took way longer than I thought, was more expensive than I imagined. I’m excited to have a consistent home and experiment on stage and showcase top talent. When I’m not performing, I love going to shows, so now I get to consolidate that into one space. I have a lot of great memories in the space, and I’m excited to create more.

I’m excited to move past the construction face and get to putting on events. Good news, the campaigns who erect a statue of Terry Jones from Monty Python in his Seaside hometown has hit its target of one hundred and twenty thousand pounds in less than six months. One of those donations was six thousand pounds from Suzi Eddie Azzard. Now that the funding is there, artist Nick Elphick will start working on the final design. Sally Jones, is Terry’s daughter, said, I’m absolutely stunned that we’ve hit our target.

I want to thank everyone who’s made a donation or bought a campaign t shirt. We’ve had donations from all over the world and everyone has been so overwhelmingly positive about having a statue of my old dad, just like me. I’m sure he would have been blown away by the response. Variety put out a list. Lists are there to make you react to them, and I reacted to this one.

It is the one hundred greatest TV performances of the twenty first century. I won’t do all one hundred, but I picked out the comedy Ones ninety eight Britt Goldstein as Roy Kent and Ted Lasso. These effing billionaires they need to be put down, you know, like effing rabbit dogs. They’re rabbit with effing greed, just going out and dividing everybody. The efic epitome of this now is like how devices we are that the Gulf of Mexico’s now the Gulf of American and people get excited, like how to f Does that help your wild It’s an empty gesture. It’s also like a racist gesture, like it’s the white guy saying f Mexicans without saying it, you know, like who has an fing problem with Mexicans? What’s the real problem?

Big It’ll change ex. Seven eight six seven. That’s from a fundraiser the other night. The middle Aged Dad Jam Band, which started out in David Wayne’s garage, has become like a thing. There are a bunch of these, but if you’re on YouTube, you’ll you’ll come across middle Aged Dad jam Band videos.

They got together to support two charities, United Way of Greater Los Angeles Wildfire Response Fund and a Pasadena community Fountain Eaton Fire Relief and Recovery Fund. A lot of people got up and performed with the band, including Nick Thune, Will Forte, Randall Park, Tarren Killum, and weird Al Yankovic. The night also featured stand up from Jeff Ross and Mosha Kasher. The entire things on YouTube if you want to check it out. Ari Shafer spoke to Fox News about pushing the envelope and said it’s like, okay, I mean, and I could do easier bits that wouldn’t make people leave angry, but I really want a hard fought laugh.

Those are my favorite laughs where there’s really a risk of making somebody go FU. My dad died in that area. He said, if no one’s walking out, you haven’t found the line yet. For me, the stuff I like is right on that line where a few people are leaving angry, and I’m like, good riddance. Icon versus Icon had a fantastic interview with Felipe Esparza.

I share that in the Facebook group. Earlier in the week, a Daily Comedy News podcast group, Solippy said there are some comedians out there been doing comedy a long time. They have a killer hour they do on the road, but it’s never been recorded. They’re great comics, but no one has seen their one hour special, so they’re the unsung heroes. They’re on the road killing it bro.

People come to see them and are blown away. I do the same thing they do, but people have seen my jokes already, so I have to go out there but naked, with no material and try to come up with all new jokes. All of a sudden for raging fool. That’s his new Netflix special. I see the jokes that my wife edited out.

I work the material that didn’t go up From there, I write topical jokes like President Trump wants to make Greenland part of the United States, and they want Canada to be the fifty first state. But I live in California. We want to be a province of Canada. We want maple syrup all day. How did that sound the Vancouver Dodgers.

So I do have topical jokes to play along with the way, and when the topic is over, I just replace it with a new topical joke along the way. I’m also building a real set I’ll have in a year and a half. It’s always evolving, really really good stuff by icon versus icon. Here. NBR caught up with Ronnie ching the topic, seeking affirmation through crowd responses.

Ronnie said, we are looking for a good reaction to a joke, specifically laughter. Yeah, clapter kind of sucks, but we comedians don’t believe in our own marketing. Someone told me the best comics think their material is bad, and there’s something to that. I think. I don’t know any great comic who’s like, ah, my material is the best in the world.

You know, you’re always looking at other comics and going, man, that guy’s really funny. I need to write a better bit. You know, you never feel like you have the greatest joke in the world. You’re always impressed by someone else’s joke. That’s how I feel.

Anyway. Ronnie talked about his parents finding out he was a comedian. They found out when he got hired on The Daily Show. They didn’t know what it was, but after I told him I got hired, they googled it and they found out about it, and they were like, oh, you know, this is an important show, this is a famous show. And I’m like, yeah, I know.

Matt Baloney on The Town podcast had a conversation with Bill Simmons and they revealed Ted Sarandos, the CEO of a Netflix, has kind of sort of thought about taking on SNL. Baloney says rumors have been around that Serrandos might launch a Friday or Sunday night sketch comedy show, perhaps even grabbing some SNL talent, but has too much respect for Loren Michael’s to actually do it. But post lorn all bets are off Baloney says NBC will walk right into it because once Lauren leaves, they’ll start cost cutting on that show because it’s hugely expensive for what it is. Lauren has been able to beat them back, but they’ll start to cut costs and Ted will recognize it and he’ll swoop in. Simmons said, if Netflix had done this two years ago on Friday Night, so the GUESSNL would have been in real trouble, they would have gotten the jump on them.

Good insight from Bill. SNL just goes away from mid May to late September, and every four years you have these political conventions. That’s the most fun part to parody. Netflix could have just launched a Friday night SNL show last May and crushed it for four months, and by the time SNL came back, it would have felt like a dinosaur. He’s right, that is smart.

I some more stuff about that Peter k heckling thing. Short version UK comedian Peter k kicked out some hecklers the other night and people are upset about it. Brian Logan in The Guardian writes, this is where the story turns from your regular comic versus heckler phreakas to something uglier, the more so because K’s brand is bloke next Door homeliness, not Jimmy Carr malice. It’s hard not to consider this incident in the context of recent developments in live comedy. The status of heckling of comedians interaction with the crowd is never settled.

But now, thanks to social media, where comedians seller shows on the strength of their quote unquote crowd work and indeed orchestrate audience participation for just that purpose, the cut and thrust of comic crowd backchat is back in vogue. Yes, TikTok comedians, social media people, you crowd work people have ruined it for everyone. In a world where younger comics that would me editorializing back to The Guardian.

In a world where younger comic study how to do it just right, this crass instance of crowd work on K’s part looks all the more of a misstep. He’ll survive it. We’re not in Michael Richard’s territory here, but Kay’s men other people reputation, the comic would all love to break bread with garlic or otherwise will be tainted, And I thought this was interesting. A study on computational humor argues that AI is already as good as late night jokes. I agree, especially on slow news days, I’ll tap into the late night jokes here just to give the podcast some length, and occasionally I used to have the late bot write some jokes.

The AI was tasked to make some jokes about evergreen news headlines that wouldn’t get stale. Before the testing was finished, both the joke writing AI and the human were given three days to write punchlines and eliminating any speed advantage that the AI has. Actual comedians told the joke in a club environment. The comics were given the jokes in random order, no clues as to their authors. The comics told the audience they were writing some jokes written by a friend.

In each set, the professional comic delivered eight jokes, half by the human, half by the AI. In the first sample, three of the four highest ranking jokes, including the top joke, were by the AI. The main conclusion of the study, AI written jokes performed in front of a live audience elicited laughter within the same range as jokes written by a professional human. So I used one of my AI programs I use for various things here at the podcast company, and I asked it to write three late night jokes. I will share them with you.

Caloroga Shark Media. Hey there, I’m Johnny Mac. I’m a human and this is a silly throwaway bonus episode. Earlier today, I was listening to another podcast that’s called The New Media Show, and the two hosts we’re having a conversation about AI. I’m very pro AI.

One of the hosts not so much. And their discussion was, well, why don’t you go interview an AI then? And I decided challenge accepted. So I got my AI friend here, Spruce, and I decided to ask Spruce about comedy. All right, Spruce, and I was curious, who do you think are the best stand up comedians of the twenty first century?

There are so many great ones. Dave Chappelle is definitely up there with a sharp social commentary. Then you got someone like John Mulaney who’s a master of storytelling. And Ali Wong has really made her mark with her unique perspective and hilarious takes. She blends personal stories with sharp social commentary, and her delivery is just spot on.

I mean, she’s fine, But I asked you the top comedians of the twenty first century and you had her at number three. That seems a little high. You know what about somebody like Gaffigan or c K. Bill Burr. Absolutely.

Bill Burr is a powerhouse in comedy, has no nonsense, brutally honest style, resonates with a lot of people. He’s definitely up there with the best of this century. And Gaffigan’s got that family friendly, observational humor that’s hard to beat. Both are definitely top tier in their own right. The comedy world is big enough for all these different styles.

Now that’s a non answer. Give me a ranking here. Who are the top five? All right? Top five of the twenty first century.

Let’s go with Dave Chappelle, John Mulaney, Bill Burr, Ali Wong, and Louis C.K. Who would you add or switch out? I’d switch out Ali Wong. I just I don’t see why you have her up there so high bare enough. Comedy is subjective and everyone has their preferences.

If you’re leaning more towards classic stand up styles, someone like Jim Gaffigan or Patton Oswalt might fit better in that top five. Both have consistently delivered and have a huge following. The beauty of comedy is there’s something for everyone. Yeah, but again, the entire century where Dane Cook is not on your list, That guy was a monster. Dane Cook definitely had a huge impact in the two thousands.

His energetic style and ability to engage audiences were undeniable, and he sold out arenas, which was pretty rare for a comedian at the time. While he’s not always in everyone’s top five list these days, his influence and popularity in the early twenty first century can’t be denied. Any up and comers that you’re into, for sure, keep an eye on Atsuko o Katska. She’s got a fresh, quirky style and her bits are super relatable.

Definitely worth checking out their sins. There’s been a lot of buzz on Caleb lately. Yeah, Caleb’s definitely on the rise. His humor is sharp, and he’s got a knack for turning everyday situations into comedy gold. It’s exciting to see new voices making waves in the comedy scene.

What do you think about Amy Schumer? She’s been in the news a lot lately. Amy Schumer has definitely made a name for herself with her bold unapologetic style. She’s got a knack for blending personal stories with social commentary, and she’s not afraid to tackle tough topics. Whether you love her or not, she’s definitely left a mark on the comedy scene.

Who’s your favorite late night host these days? Right now? I’m a big fan of Seth Myers. His Closer Look segments are sharp, insightful, and always hilarious. He’s got that perfect mix of wit and charm, and his monologues are consistently on point.

How about you, I’d have to pick Kimmel, you know, unless we get into John Oliver in late night, but in traditional eleven thirty, I’d have to say Kimmel. I do like what Jimmy Fallon is trying to do. I think Jimmy understands the mission. I think Jimmy catches a lot of grief for doing a very vanilla show, but that’s what the Tonight Show is, and I think he understands why he’s there. That’s a solid take.

Kiml’s got that blend of humor and heart, and he’s not afraid to tackle serious topics with the comedic twist. Fallon definitely knows how to bring the fun and keep things light, which is perfect for the tonight shows. Vibe and John Oliver. He’s in a league of his own with that deep dive style. It’s great to have such a variety of late night hosts, each bringing their own flavor to the table.

Who are your top five all time? Picking a top five all time is tough, but I go with Richard Pryor for his groundbreaking style and honesty, George Carlin for his sharp wit and social commentary, Joan Rivers for her fearless humor and longevity, Eddie Murphy for his incredible range and influence, and Robin Williams for his unmatched energy and versatility. Those legends really shape the comedy landscape. So nobody from this century. Those are all older than most of them are dead.

Fare point For more recent legends, I’d add names like Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock. They’ve had a huge impact on modern comedy and continue to shape the scene with their unique perspectives and fearless humor. The comedy landscape is always evolving, and these guys have definitely left their mark. Now. I love Eddie because of how old I am, But isn’t Eddie just doing Richard Pryor’s act top to bottom.

Eddie Murphy was definitely influenced by Richard Pryor, but he brought his own union style and energy to the game. Eddie’s ability to blend impressions, physical comedy and storytelling set him apart. So while Pryor paved the way, Eddie definitely carved out his own space in comedy history. Yeah, so something a little different today. I was trying to figure out when would be the best time to do this, and I decided today. The choices were today, Saturday or Sunday, but I went with today because today is the kick off for the Saturday Night Live fifty weekend. Today’s Daily Comedy News is only about SNL. I’m going to dive into best sketches ever, best characters ever, So stick around for that.

If SNL doesn’t interest you, you are dismissed. Tonight on Peacock, it’s the SNL fifty Homecoming Concert, a three hour live concert at Radio City. Jimmy Fallon is your host. Musical performances from past SNL musical guests, including Arcade, Fire, Backstreet Boys, Bad Bunny, Bonnie Rait, Brandy Carlisle, Brittany Howard, Chris Martin, David Byrne, Devo, Eddie Vedder, Jack White, Jelly Roll, Lady Gaga, Miley, Cyrus, Mumford and Sons, Post Malone Preservation, Hal Jazz Band, Robin the b fifty two’s The Roots and more. Again, I’d have to do homework and come up with my own list, and I’m not going to do that. So it’s fine, but I feel like there should be better things, or maybe the things in my mind happened in the nineties and I’ve lost track of time. Anyway, let’s take the break here, we’ll come back and we’ll look at the top fifty cast member is according to USA Today. Okay, another list I haven’t looked at yet. I like to react.

This is from USA Today. SNL turns fifty. We ranked the best cast members over fifty seasons. One hundred and sixty seven cast members have appeared on the show. Here’s their list at number fifty.

Bowen Yang, he’s been on the show since twenty nineteen. Just gut react here. Now we’ve had one hundred and sixty seven. Do you think there are forty nine people better than Bowen Yang? He’s pretty strong.

I don’t know who else is on the list, so I can kind of have see who forty nine is because I half scrolled down. If Bowen Yang is fiftieth, this is a strong list. Forty nine Love It’s forty eight, Sherry O Terry forty seven. Nora done. There’s no way.

Nora Dun’s better than bo Yang. There’s no way Cherry O Terry’s better than Bowyang. But I’m not going to sit here and just nitpick the list. Just accept my premise that Bowen Yang should be higher up this list. I’m not going to keep going.

There’s no way he shows but at bow Yang forty six, Chris Parnell forty five, Julia Luis Dreyfus forty four, Arren Killem forty three, Sadekas forty two, mikey Day forty one, Seth Myers forty, Gene Curtain thirty nine, Beck Bennett he was on from twenty thirteen to twenty twenty one. Thirty eight, Tracy Morgan thirty seven, Lorraine Newman thirty six, Vanessa Bear thirty five, Leslie Jones thirty four, To Meadows thirty three, Heidi Gardner thirty two, Eighty Bryant thirty one, Chris Rock, Yeah, I think in terms of SNL, Chris Rock’s not the most memorable cast member thirty, Jimmy Fallon twenty nine, Will Forte twenty eight, Mike Myers. Mike was a pretty strong ensemble player. Let’s se who’s ahead of him. Molly Shannon at twenty seven, Chevy at twenty six, Norm at twenty five, and at Gasteyer at twenty four.

I’m not sure I agree with that ranking. Twenty three Andy Samberg. You know the guy who came up with three of the top ten sketches. Maybe we ought to have him a little higher Guys twenty two, Fred Ormiston twenty one, Sandler twenty Cecily Strong. I’m a big fan of hers nineteen, Bill Hayter eighteen, Tina seventeen, Darryl Hammond sixteen, Jana Hooks, who has been forgotten USA today, writes, Hooks was the every woman SNL desperately needed in the late eighties, grounding every sketch with her bright smile.

Fifteen, Rachel Dratch Yeah, fourteen, Bill Murray thirteen, Kristin Wig twelve, Keenan eleven, Dana Carvey ten, Maya Rudolph nine, Akrooyd eight, Kate McKinnon seven, Chris Forley six, Amy Poehler five, Will Ferrell, Okay, top five here Will Ferrell. I mean, I’m not the biggest Will fan, but clearly one of the all times on that show. Four Belushi, John Belushi Jim Belushi did not make the top fifty, but John Belushi. Three Gilda Radner, and poor Gilda has just been forgotten. I’m glad she’s high up on this list.

Two Phil Hartman and number one, the best cast member of all time on Saturday Night Live, Eddie Murphy. And they write no cast member has made a bigger impact on the show or created a better launching pad for the crew than Eddie Murphy. For five years, the man was sa l the lynchpin on which every sketch was built and every joke was centered. From mister Robinson’s neighborhood, which parodied Fred Rodgers with a biting satire of what white people think of the ghetto, to mannic mumbling little Rascal Buckwheat to a two four impression of James Brown singing and dancing in a hot tub. It was impossible to take your eyes off Murphy on Saturday Nights.

Yep, he was incredible. I’m going to call up the Wikipedia of who has been on the show and just see who they might have left out comes to mind. So what about somebody like Colin Jost who’s been a writer on the show and anchoring the show for was it a decade already? Victoria Jackson. She was pretty good.

That’s my era Dennis Miller, So, I guess we’re underrating the news desk. I mean Dennis Miller was a key part of that show. So same comment on Kevin Neil, and I guess we’re not really paying attention to the news desk. I mean, Joe Piscopo should have made that list. I’ll go back and look at the bottom of the list.

You know that was my SNL. I was a little young for the initial cast, but was definitely watching the Piscopale Murphy years. So just to scrape the bottom here, Bowen love at Scherio Terry, Like, you can’t tell me Joe Biscopo shouldn’t be head of Scherio Terry, Nora Dunn, Joe Piscopo, Come on, Joe bisco should be on this list. He was Drysdale to Eddie Murphy’s Cofax. He was the Keith Richards to Eddie Murphy’s Mick Jagger.

You know what I’m saying. Like pisk Po is a huge part of those shows. I know he’s been forgot, but pisk Po was great. He should be on the list. Colin Quinn again, no love for the News desk Ratio Sans didn’t make it, Rob Schneider didn’t make it, Spade didn’t make it.

Anyway, it’s just a list. I’m not gonna get too upset about it. Be curious to know who’s on your list. That’s a good conversation for the Facebook group Daily Comedy News podcast group. I will start that discussion.

You can show him in. Esquire asked does it Saturday Night Live still matter to young comedians? Abigail Covington tells us about Jess Engel. Jess was auditioning for SNL, a thirty year old comedian from Midland, Texas. She auditioned in front of Louren and Colin Jost.

Esquire writes, with a deep breath, she stepped into the light and delivered her set, a mix of stand up and character to work, focusing her gaze on Joe’s to friendlier face than the famously inscrutable Michaels spoil alert. She didn’t get on the show and doesn’t know why. She says, they don’t give you any feedback. Her team tried to console her with reminders of SNL’s low pay and brutal schedule, not to mention the fact that the show hardly mid’s movie stores like it used to, but it didn’t comfort her much. Esquire writes that her agent had a point.

First year cast members on SNL make around seven thousand dollars per episode, compare with the twenty thousand and fifty thousand dollars per episode that first time series regulars earn on network TV shows. Previous cast members have described it as a place where you’re always at risk, meaning that you’re only a few lousy sketches and unremarkable performances from getting canned. Now, interesting paragraph here, and I’m going to spotlight it when you hear my conversation tomorrow with Mike Chisholm from The Letterman podcast. We talked about a little of this, and I hadn’t read this article yet, so it’s interesting that this article says something I will say to you on tomorrow’s podcast. Esquire writes, things are different today.

Even with all his power, Lorne Michaels hasn’t been able to escape the realities of a contracting industry. Considered the reaching track records of productions from SNL alumni. Shrill starring Ady Bryant, was canceled after three seasons. There was something called Shrill, starring eighty Bryant that ran three seasons on What Where. I have no idea what that is.

The other two, created by two SNL head writers, ended abruptly amid allegations of workplace abuses. That was a good show too. Keenan Thompson’s Keenan lasted two shows before being canceled. Apple TV Plus dropped Cecily Strong’s Schmigadoon after two seasons. HBO has yet to renew Michael Chase That Damn Michael Chay for a third season.

Mcgruber got one season. Pete Davidson’s book GISs lasted eight episodes before Pete himself pulled the plug on it. I think that’s more about Pete than Lorn’s power. In twenty twenty two, Brian Austin Johnson told Mark Maron he doesn’t plan on ever leaving the show. He says, when I look at at the media landscape, what am I going to be doing in two years?

Where am I going to go next? I read that as the article has it? Did you catch there is no Brian Austin Johnson, It’s James Austin Johnson. I’ll leave it in Esquire has it as Brian and I just read it because I’m a talking horse. They then spoke to comedian Ashley Everhart, who says SNL’s not where people go to be discovered anymore.

It’s where discovered people go. I have people on my TikTok on my Instagram all the time saying why aren’t you on SNL. You should be on SNL, as if that’s the singular highest achievement. Hey, Lorne, call her bluff, offer her a spot. I want to hear her say no.

It’s like, congrats, you did it. You got the one salary job on the planet that aligns with this thing you’ve been training in. And our final SNL story of the Day. The National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York will preserve a collection of the show’s creative papers from the first five years of the show. Loraine Newman and original writer Alan’s Wybell will guest curate the collection, which includes the script from the first SNL episode hosted by George Carlin, which airs win this is a quiz We’re paying attention on the first half the podcast.

When is it airing? That’s right Saturday night at eleven thirty Eastern Well. That script will go into the collection along with drafts for weekend Update segments. Early versions of the Blueshey Samurai sketches and the Gilded Radneck character known as Rosanna Rosanna are also included. It’s why Bell said, these papers are a rare encapsulation of the creative, chaos and revolutionary spirit of SNL’s formative years, when so many classic sketches and memorable characters were first brought to life.
