Caloroga Shark Media. You here, I’m shiny Nack with your Daily Comedy News. Maybe I’m just getting to be an old man, or maybe I’m from a different time. I don’t know. You know what’s happening in Austin tonight at the Comedy Mothership, which, as you know, is the popular club in Austin owned by Joe Rogan.

The Comedy Mothership is hosting the Comedy Dating Show, and the show promises the comedians will quote shoot their shot with Christina p for a chance at love. Now. Everyone should find someone to love, and you know, I wish Christina the best. This just feels soon to this old man recording a podcast in a basement. Christina filed for a divorce from Tom back in May.

They only recently confirmed it on the most two recent podcasts, So sure, go ahead and live your best life. It just feels a little a little soon to me. We’ll also talk about Amy Schumer tomorrow. She’s got a new movie about divorce that also feels a little soon. We’ve got a lot of other stuff to cover today.

Starvro’s Halkius was on the Popcast. I spent Saturday sitting on the beach boy, Saturday was one of the all time great beach days. It was like seventy nine, super sunny, super dry. The ocean was as warm as it ever is going to get in the New Jersey area, and it was wonderful. And I listened to podcasts and the popcast and Stavros started talking about one of my favorite topics.

The Riyadh Comedy Festival edits here for pacing, and quite many edits for language. And this is somewhat a long clip, but here’s Starvro’s Halkias taking the money. I kind of understood and understood, but I could see a way where these people that don’t really think about you know, they get a lot of these all and look, oh, let’s be honest, we’re at the top. You think that’s the most evil place some of these guys have performed. You don’t think they’ve gone Northrop Grumman, but you know what I mean.

Like and by the on record, I would never do any of that. But I think when you’re at the highest levels, you probably you start to get a little comfortable with you’re evil, because when that’s where all the money leads, right, anyone is successful, it’s like there’s no you can’t wash your hands of this if you exist in this society, and the more successful you get, the more the closer you get to whoever the illuminati is right like, and so I think there’s a there’s I could see how it just becomes normalized. It doesn’t make me doubt myself at all, because I know it was wrong to do that. I don’t care what those counter arguments are. And I’ve heard people like, well, we’re bringing freedom.

It’s like no, it’s like and they’re like, well we’re evil. It’s like, yeah, America is where we are the we really there’s our foreign policy since World War Two has what’s has been ruining the world. I mean, there’s no way to look at it any other way in my opinion. But I’m just saying like, like, yes that I see their point, where, well, you perform in America, but it’s like, but I’m not performing for Donald Trump and his kids, you know what I mean, Like, I’m not like. And the criticism is that it’s culture washing that it allows exactly.

It would be like doing an ice benefit, you know what I mean. It’s like, like I get that there’s good people in Saudi Arabia. I understand that, and I understand there’s people want them comedy, right, and I want that, but it’s like I don’t want them. By the way, how many of those people were there really is another question I have. My guess is it’s probably the upper class.

But again I don’t know. That’s pure conjecture. I would love it if there was a public. People. Yeah, and this idea that you could say, no, you couldn’t say what you tell me, you could say whatever the Saudi king was had was more lax than like, like you know.

This was Chappelle’s argument. This was Chappelle’s bit about it was he was like, actually I had more freedom there than I did. That’s not where I can’t theovonn. Just make peace with Iron, just get out of there. And what Trump is doing, he’s doing taco. If you’re not familiar with this, some people say taco means Trump always chickens out. Mister Jang continued, saying, like one day he’s like, we’re gonna end your civilization. The other day he’s like, let’s make peace, guys, let’s just be friends.

And the next day he’s like, now I’m gonna nuke you. Now next day he’s like, oh, you know what, I didn’t really mean that it’s just weird. Theovaugh said, the war feels pointless and bizarre, continuing our theme of maybe perhaps possibly comedians are not the sharpest people out there, like it’s possible they’re not the most well educated people, the most knowledgeable people. Chelsea Handler was upset, Chelsea No, not this time about Joe Rogan making eighty two million dollars. Chelsea was on Kara Swisher’s podcast, which isn’t exactly a podcast for the regular people.

If you’ve ever listened to Kara, Kara might be a little out of touch with the regular people, but I digress. Chelsea Handler shared her concerns about Attorney General Todd Blanche. Chelsea’s concern is that Attorney General Todd Branch might overturn Roe versus Wade.

Roe versus Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court in twenty twenty two. Chelsea Handler said about Attorney General Todd Blanche, We’re going to get Todd Blanch. He’s going to be confirmed, and he’s going to overturn Roe versus Wade. We’re all sitting around. All these men who have these powerful platforms are sitting around and watching this happen to women, to communities that you could instead be supporting.

Jlsea Handler was filling in for Jimmy Kimmel and talked about it, as I said, comedians might not be the smartest people we are political today, Johnny Mac, I know. Bill Maher on his program, argued that immigrants must assimilate to American culture and accept certain fundamental values like gay rights, women’s equality, and free speech, saying those principles are quote not white values unquote, but liberal ones. Continuing to quote Bill Maher, he said, if you want the American dream, you have to take the American values. Biden’s policy of open doors and then Trump’s policy of broken windows. Now I’m on the page of America doing what it used to do so well, stealing hard working, talented immigrants from around the world and making them Americans.

Bill suggested things have changed, quoting Bill again, Now most immigrants still want to assimilate. But I have this other attitude of melting pot. If you you melt. Look, you don’t have to love everything about America. We don’t, said Bill Moore.

That’s why yelp was invented. But you know, if you do get past ice, America is actually pretty cool. We say, you do you eat the food your grandma cooked, speak another language at home, celebrate religious holidays. We welcome your food, your art, your fashion, your first ladies. That’s a good joke.

But you have to answer one question. Do you like Western civilization? Because that’s what we are. That’s not negotiable. Dave Chappelle was upset about people.

In Heel Yeah, we see James Austin Johnson performing at a variety of venues, including The Den Theater in Chicago, Cobbs Comedy Club in San Francisco, Zenie’s, and Nashville. The trailer tells us James Austin Johnson is one year no wait one hour to change comedy forever, or he will be chemically castrated.

There is a trailer, and I got to tell you I hate this trailer. I think this trailer is awful. I think I can see by watching the trailer that’s a good special in here. But as trailers go, this is terrible. Let’s play a little of it.

I’ve clipped it down for pacing, but here’s some of it. You ever been playing a video game and your guy gets into some fire? Okay, so this is a video game guy burning alive. A pretty crazy show I got planned for you, guys. I’m going to talk about my life a little bit, some social commentary for a little bit.

And there’s a new episode of It’s Always Sunning at Philadelphia and out he let me walk you around a little bit. There’s a funny story with Sane Gillis. He was caught I think it was at a soccer game and he was drinking a dose Ekies and then he realized he was on camera and somebody quickly swapped out the beer for a bud light. So that’s a funny video making the rounds. How’s it out on Netflix?

Kelsey Cook’s a new special. I didn’t realize that she is getting married to Chad Daniels this weekend, but that’s a pretty big week in her life. So check that out as well. The other thing and we’ll cover this on Wednesday’s audio podcast, Stoppers hawkis if you haven’t listened to him on the popcast yet, really interesting. He got into my favorite topic, the Riot Comedy Festival, and basically was not too kind to Chappelle, specifically called out Chappelle and some of the other comedians who appeared there, paraphrasing starv Ros like, I get it’s about the money, but it’s not about the money.

Joe Rogan had on Shane Gillis, Ourry Shafir and Mark normand the Daily Beasts listened to it and their headline was Mega friendly. In discussing this on the Joe Rogan experience, I have clipped it for both pacing and language. He was at the White House. Yes, so was I. So was Shane. You know what I’m saying, Like, that’s the problem.

To go in the VIP rome. I said, no, I. Went in there. Photos are gonna be taken and were in there, I know, and that I stood outside in the rain. I was like, I’m not getting my picture taken.

I took zero heat for that event. But you took with Trump a couple of years back a photo that was. Great photo where you were wearing the Pablo Escobar shirt. A lot of things. That’s true.

That’s pre pre world record. No no, no, not me personally. I mean. Back then when I was taking that picture, I was like, this guy is going to release the Epstein files and. It was a killing Americans.

On that episode of the Joe Rogan Experience, we also learned that communism is gay. Some mean needs to look into how gay communism. But it isn’t crazy that it’s making a comeback. Yeah, it always does. It’s a cycle.

There’s a cycle. Is if we cannot call it communism. If we get free health care, that. Would be a good move. That would help a lot.

We’re calling everybody communist. Pre health care is cool. We should have that. It’s normal. That’s not communism.

You should treat the entire country. Look at the community. If you have a community, would you want the sickest person to die, who could be very valuable if you could like take care of them, and do you have the resources to take care of them. You should take care of exactly what the library. This is the problem with don’t feel like the community with This is the reason why people turn on all these billionaires.

They turn on them because they why do you have so much when people have so little. But it’s because it’s the game. It’s the game that they’re playing, and you’re playing the game too, you’re just not playing it at that level. Joe Rogan, who I’m going to point out before this clip, seems perfectly healthy. He doesn’t seem like the kind of guy that’s suddenly gonna drop out of a heart attack.

You know, it looks very very healthy. Takes care of himself anyway. He has some thoughts about crypto that I’ve clipped for pacing in language. The crypto stuff’s nuts. It’s like Trump has made billions in crypto, like, and then you got his sons, and his sons are involved in all these weird business deals where the business deals have to do with some things that Trump put and then the sons are involved in these businesses, and like there’s a lot of money flowing that you could dig in and start arresting people.

Another good listen is Star Wars Hockey Is. On the pop Cast podcast, he discussed comedians getting political. A lot of stand up comics happened the last couple of years to have some of the dumbest opinions on Earth. And they are my friends and I’m like, all right, guys, can we talk about this. When you look back at twenty twenty four, in the run up to that election, you saw how the right was activating or maybe in some cases weaponizing, totally comedy in the podcast space.

Were you having behind the scenes conversations with those folks about what was happening, and did you at all feel like you have to issue some kind of corrective in what you’re doing. I do kind of resent it because I do feel like they’ve forced a lot of my contemporars have forced me to be explicitly political in a way that I’m not interested in doing. Even something I said today, it’s like, I don’t want people to know I know who Muhammad most said that was. The brand. No, no, I want I don’t want them to know how to polycide degree right, Like the most charitable reading is uh, some people thought their platform was important enough to host either the President of the United States, the vice president whatever, and they want to do a public service.

And I think that is that was naive. It’s either you’re either naive, which some people think were, or you’re so arrogant that you think that’s true. I think it’s either that or it’s cynically again part of the problem of wanting to be as famous as possible and being like, well, just this will get clicks, or they thought culture was going to go to the right and they’re like, we want to I want to get out in front. And by the way, I do think it did feel that way. And I do think if the trub administration hadn’t gone full blown fascist right out of the gate, I think that is the way things would have gone Cultruly, I do think there’s whatever the answer is.

I think it was a mistake. On the podcast also called out how wealth and fish or changing a list comics. The New York Times went out of their way to do an article just on that point. The transcript reads as Stavro saying, people just want to be as successful as possible. They want to play arenas for arena’s sake.

They want to be the kind of guy like they want to be on a private jet that sucks. I really want adversity because nobody gets funny or on a private jet. At one point, do we have like a responsibility? Isn’t that the whole thing? But stand up?

Isn’t speaking truths of power? Which I found corny. Isn’t that theoretically part of it? I don’t like that we’re trying to get as famous as possible. Mike Birbiglia has canceled some of his shows that he was doing with John Mulaney.

You think they’re backstage going, Hey, you know that guy, Gianmarco Soresi SIRESI he’s ripping you off, John, which Gianmarco Soresi is not. That is just absurd. I like making fun of the idea that Gianmarco Soresi is somehow doing Mullany. He’s not. I digress.

Birbiglia has canceled a bunch of shows to pursue an unnamed quote unquote dream project. So if you were planning to see him at the Great Outdoors Comedy of Them Calgary, or perhaps in New Hampshire or some other dates, check his website. I’m not going to read a list of canceled dates. Burbiggs said, I wanted to let you know that a dream project of mind came together for the September, which is great, like really really great. I can’t wait to tell you more.

I think you’ll love it, but I can’t tell you yet. That says I’m no longer able to perform Some dates on the John Mulaney mister whatever tour. As you know, this is something I always try to avoid, but in this case, there’s no way around the schedule overlap. So go see John’s show. It’s epic.

It’ll be John’s best special. In my opinion, you will love it. Love in all caps. Top of his Game out on Netflix today, Kelsey Cook has a new special. She shared that she was on the phone with her agent.

He was just being casual and said, by the way, Netflix is buying your special. Kelsey said, I’ll never forget that moment. I was on cloud nine. She financed Happy Hour herself, hoping to sell it to a streaming platform, but knowing she could always upload it to YouTube or whatnot. It took a few months and now Happy Hour is on Netflix.

Filmed in the Twin Cities. How does that work? Did she film half of it in Minneapolis and half of it in Saint Paul or did she just film it in one of the Twin cities? I like to nitpick language. Cook said, I wanted to make sure that this, especially because I was hoping it would go on Netflix, would be like anybody who watches it can feel like there’s something for them sometimes if you do too much local stuff at a special, it can feel not quite as interesting and you want to open so strong.

In Happy Hour, she talks about her fiance’s road rage, pooping in airplane bathrooms, sobriety, depression, and her mother’s experiences with dementia. Putting the special together, she said, you’re always trying to find that happy medium between feeling confident in the joke. You’ve gotten to the point where they feel ready to shoot, but you also haven’t run on them in the ground. We were really sick of telling them. Did you watch Rory Scovell’s special out on Netflix last week?

It is the number two special of the year, in my opinion, the only one better so far as Chris Fleming, I thought Rory’s was fantastic. He was asked how he would describe the market for comedy specials today. Skoll said, for me, it’s like where do you get the eyes? And it’s probably in Netflix or YouTube. My last one was on HBO and that felt so cool because as a kid, it was like, oh, here’s HBO.

And also they don’t do one hundred a year. They’re very selective. But in terms of globally, who has access to stuff. YouTube is probably the best, Kui, dude, dude, shut up, turn up, you shut up. You’re messing with Netflix.

Take the Netflix money. It’s just such a gamble because now you’re hoping you make ad money, and if you do and it hits, as we’ve seen, you can really explode. It can change your life. Netflix is probably up there as well in terms of, hey, we press a button and now everyone has access to it, and if that works, then good. But I think word of mouth is still the strongest force in me.

When I hear someone tell me that I should see something or read something or check something out, that is so much more weight to me than anything that I get served. Honestly, if I get their own something too much on my phone and this goes against my own publicity efforts, I’m like, why are you trying to talk me into this? Now, this is interesting, Rory said. And someone had just started who figured out this other format of showcasing their humor is already crushing it and selling more tickets. And it’s frustrating. It makes you feel like someone’s cutting in line, even though that’s absurd.

But I’ve come to the realization of well, it’s actually easier to get an audience now. The frustrating thing is it gets oversaturated. But if you do come out the other side, you’ve gained an audience. You’ve really proved that what we have is a valuable product. I just hate having to work that hard.

Having to work hard is frustrating. However, people keep showing up, and I’m fortunate that Netflix we want to show your special and that only leads to more eyeballs and bigger and better things. I hope, and I can’t really be upset about any of it. I’m in a spot where if you’d told me when I started that i’d be here in twenty two years, I’d be like, well, that’s the goal. They were curious how his merch sales are going.

As much as I like the bit of un recording pool side, it’s too loud to do that.

I had to come inside. I’m sitting in a windowless basement, and to be honest, I wanted to go to the beach today, but I have to record my other show, Five Good News Stories, because I have no episodes left, so I actually have to work. Sometimes you have to work, right, Jimmy Fallon, That’s right, right, Jimmy Kimmel. Jimmy Kimmel says, no, we will see. The tonight show average one point five six one million total viewers, up a bit from the week before, eighteen to forty nine two hundred and twenty six thousand viewers.

Kimmel repeats of guest host repeats averaged one point zero zero six million. Wow, that’s a pretty low number for that particular show. Again, you know, it’s a repeat, and it’s not even a repeat of Jimmy hosting it. The Late Show at Stephen Colbert had zero viewers because CBS got rid of it. Comics Unleashed averaged six hundred and fifty four thousand viewers, down two percent week to week, and sixty seven thousand whole people eighteen to forty nine, which isn’t even a good number for a podcast.

At twelve thirty seven of funny, you should ask to average about four hundred and thirty thousand viewers and in the eighteen to forty nine forty six thousand. Yikes. Seth Myers is in repeats for seven weeks for some reason. So that got seven hundred and forty thousand viewers down twenty two percent, and he’s got one hundred and nine thousand adults eighteen to forty nine. We’ll see what seven weeks of repeats does to that show.

Out today on the eight hundred pound Guerilla, Reese Darby’s specials called twenty five Years coming to Netflix soon. Second City Television better known as SCTV, all six seasons will be on Netflix September first. Now that should be interesting. We’ll see if that show catches on with the youths. I haven’t watched that in a million years.

It’ll be nice to just have it right in front of you. I think that will be great, And I got some other stuff, but like I said, it’s nice out that can wait for tomorrow. Caloroga Shark Media. Hi there, Johnny Mac with your Daily Comedy News. We have heard from Tom Sagora about his divorce from Christina p. He did this on his podcast. I did clip this down a little bit.

The co host was Ryan Sickler, who kind of stepped on Tom when Tom was getting like serious and emotional, so I tried to take that part out. But let’s hear from Tom. So Goora, all right, we are back, and this is my first podcast here in a while. I know that a lot of people obviously heard the news and saw last week’s episode where Christina hosted it, and I don’t feel a need to like say a lot to people, but it bothered me that a lot of people were like, oh, I can’t believe you would make her go address this alone or like do this on her own, you know, which which couldn’t be further from the truth. The truth is that, like we have been recording separate episodes for a long time now, because everything that people know is is not new to us.

It’s you know, it’s been many many months, so this is not like brand new to us. It was many months and we record separately. So her episode was first after our return, so she addressed it first. It was never like, hey, you go handle this, you know, it was just kind of the timing of how that worked, and we both decided to record separately. That’s just what we’re doing.

It’s been horrible. It’s a horrible experience, so I just wanted to let people know it’s privately. It’s horrible. It’s a long experience. It’s emotionally a roller coaster.

Your emotions change often many times in a day. If anyone’s ever been through it or knows anyone, it’s like, it’s not you don’t feel the same all the time, and it’s really tough on you, like personally, it’s really tough going having it be public is it’s awful, you know. I can only tell you that it’s awful. Tom went on to say that the pair are non combative and they talk every day. Tom said, our focus, as you would imagine, it’s just on our children.

We’re just trying to provide the best life we can for them, and we’re trying to take care of them. I’m going to be focused on what I do and, like I said, taking care of the kids. Christina and I will continue to do that. We talk to each other. We’re fine with how things are moving along.

As disappointing as it is, it is what it is in that regard. David Letterman coming back for a seventh season of My Next Guest needs no introduction, now, Dave, I’m not sure about the premise of your show. Sure we all know who Matt Damon, Julia Robertson, Jimmy Kimmel are a pretty good guest list there, especially the Kimmel episode that should be all kinds of interesting. And the fourth guest of season seven of My Next Guest needs no introduction. I think alex Honold needs an introduction.

Interestingly enough, the September twenty sixth installment airs the same night that Saturday Night Live USA premieres its fifty second season BBC’s Celebrity Traders.

By the way, BBC Traders is much better than the American version like Night and Day. So for the second season of BBC Celebrity Traders, Rob Beckett will be on. You may know him from last one laughing he is a very funny person. Other comedians on this season Rare Meshwagon, Nathan Joe Last and Joanne McNally. That should be good comedian Charlie Barns is trying to fight the data centers.

There was an event at the or Doc Brewing Company. Charlie said, I’m basically like a big dumb billboard, like a clown saying come here and pointing to the experts. There really is just an off balance of information out there right now, and it’s just trying to even the playing field. It’s good that people are coming together on this, whatever side they’re even in on it, just to be in the same room together and connecting. That’s a huge thing that we started to lose to.

No dates or any information on any of those. Earlier in the week, Rory Scolvel’s special came out. He got the big fancy interview with the Hollywood Reporter. That means his agent’s got it done and it means someone in high only what has decided it is Rory Scovell’s turn, which is why we bought Rory Scovell stock in the Comedy stock Market on Friday. We are told by the Hollood reporter the Mary, Dad and Sissy’s never come up with new material as swiftly and easily as he did in this special.

Rory says, it just kind of came together. He said, there was one brief period in the process where we watched the special, and of course I hated it, but that was before the edit. In the end, he’s proud of what he was able to pull off because it’s tighter and in his estimation punch here that is prior work. Rory says, it’s insane that it took me twenty years to learn how to edit, but better late than never. I am trying to avoid spoilers for the special.

Yeah, I’ll just stop talking there some I’m skipping some stuff. I don’t want to ruin it for you. I’ve read a few articles that have ruined it for me, so we’ll skip parts about the content. The Holid reporter asked Rory Scovell about the era of stand up where now Rory said, I think political identity is such a thing now in what we do, and I don’t know, it’s kind of like everybody’s got to pick a side to play to. I don’t necessarily love that people would go, oh, this is a liberal comic, or this guy, well it’s liberally so these will be his opinions or his takes.

I’d rather be me going, well, no, these are my takes, and whatever category they fall into is what they fall into. But I don’t want anyone to think I’m intentionally playing the left. It’s almost impossible for me to intentionally play to the right. It’s just not my soul to do it. But it isn’t like I sit here going I think the left is great, there’s nothing wrong with it.

I’d rather be like red and blue or all under a spell. So with this hour, it feels like I tiptoed in that a little bit to figure out how to do it in a bigger way in the future. There’s some political stuff in the special, Rory says. I know there’s gonna be a lot of people who turn it off, and there’ll be a lot of people that give me crap about it. But it’s like, well, if you can’t indle that you have no curiosity about what led me to that, I’m probably not your flavor anyway.

Minor spoiler. In the special, Rory jokes it’s good to be in a blue state, Washington, even if red states are more fun. Hother reporter guests, that’s a joke rooted in some truth. Rory said, I should maybe rephrase what I said. It’s not like I want to go in and be contentious.

What it meant is I didn’t want people to think, oh, you do it in a blue state because that feels safe. I do the same show wherever I am, and my expectation is that they should laugh at it because I think it’s really funny. But other people who do get offended or hate the show because of the politics, because they can’t look pass certain topics and opinions. And that’s why I addressed it in the show. I say, you’re gonna act like liberals, and I can’t tell jokes because that’s who we all say can’t take a joke.

I could tell you what it feels like when parts of the room don’t like it, and I tend to look in that direction a little more just to see maybe my energy needs to play to them, but what does it look like. Well, some people would get up and leave, which I get. I did the show in Wilmington, North Carolina, at a comedy club before I really started the tour, and I got ackled. I said something about Trump, and this guy goes, you really think Biden was better for us? And the whole audience goes, yes, he just got to watch this.

One guy be like, wait, everyone really does think that, and then the table got up and left on their own accord. Afterwards, someone was like, yeah, it was a convicted jan sixer at that table for real. I was like, that’s just proof that anyone will come to a show. They don’t need research. They’m gonna be like, Oh, what’s the comedy flavor?

It’s so baffling to me. Another minor spoiler, Rory jokes in the special comics we have to go red to make a little green, which is clearly a reference to the manosphere, says the Holly Reporter. Rory said, I don’t know if I have a relationship to it, and I think it was like, oh, there’s a lot of comics. I didn’t know we’re so politically on the rightabouts up until the atmosphere shifted, and I think that’s why it seems like a lot of them shifted towards that, because there was money to be had in it. Whether that’s true or not, I couldn’t tell you.

But if it is true, there’s just no integrity in that. I think I’d rather not gain some sort of massive audience and not make millions of dollars and retain my integrity, mainly because the rather my kids see that version of me a lot more Rory Skolhl stuff. I think we’ll save all that for at least tomorrow. The Mike Apps Festival is back for a third year. Hosted by Mike Abbs, the three day festival promises to bring live music, comedy, health and wellness to Indianapolis August twenty through the thirtieth.

It’s a summer Sunday. Let’s do one more and go outside or something here will do this. When a stand up comedian says he’s confident he has a second world record. He’s trying to be verified for running the fastest half marathon while dressed as a microphone. Tan Hudson ran thirteen point one miles.

He already holds the record for fastest marathon by a man dressed as a microphone, but for the half he did it in one hour forty eight minutes. Not bad, he joked. I actually had the world record for fastest marathon dressed as a microphone, and I had to take that record off someone as well. I saw the half marathon on the calendar, I thought, eh, let’s do that to be a great one to try and get the world record, to be really crazy, not to take the double and get the fastest half marathon. The costume was made by a fellow comedian for him.

The run was documented by a friend who rang alongside him. Hudson said, sometimes someone will be running next to you for like twenty seconds trying to get my attention. Caloroga Shark Media. Hi there, I’m Johnny Mac and on Saturdays this summer, I’ve been doing comedy deep dives. Today we’ll take a look at Ralphie May, who was a friend of mine. Two days before he died, Ralphie May won Casino Comedian of the Year at the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. He was performing a residency at Harris.

Ralphie was also sick. He was battling pneumonia. He had to cancel a few shows. He went to the ceremony anyway, accepted the award and posted about it on social media with the hashtag no apologies, which was close enough to a personal philosophy for Ralphie May that it functions as his epitaph. Two days later, October sixth, twenty seventeen, he was found dead in his Las Vegas home at forty five years old.

The way Ralphie May died, having just been honored for a career built in casinos and clubs rather than on streaming formers or podcast empires at age forty five is a summary of a career that didn’t get the recognition it deserved when it was happening, and it has gotten even less since had Ralphie been around now with streaming and podcasts, the guy was amazing. Ralphie doesn’t come up in the rotation of names when people talk about the great comedians of his era, and I’m going to talk about those folks for the next few weeks. Let’s start at the beginning. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, raised in Clarksville, Arkansas, and by age sixteen, had been in a car accident serious enough to put him in a coma for ten days and leave him with multiple broken bones. At age seventeen, he won a radio contest that gave him a chance to open for Sam Kennison.

Opening for Sam Kennison at seventeen, Perhaps if you’re younger, you don’t understand the power of Sam Kennison. Sam was one of the most combustible and important comedians of that era, a former preacher who turned his entire religious background into fuel for one of the most ferocious stand up styles anybody had ever seen. And No, Jesus was never married. Guy never had a wife. No one I was never married because no wife would buy this story.

In one hundred years, the disciples will, the believers will, No wife would buy this story. Good luck, good luck with this story. First of all, he leaves on Friday afternoon with twelve other guys. He’s gone. He’s gone for three days, no message, no way to get in touch with her.

He comes home Monday afternoon looking like he has a slapped It seems like he’s partied out. Man, Missus Jesus just waiting. Well, I’m glad you can find your way home, Sada. Where’s your twelve friends? Won’t get a job?

How are the Yeah Disciples? My hash? They’re loser. The first time you saw Sam Kinnison, you were absolutely like Wow. Sam was playing in big rooms and generating controversy.

The comedy world was paying attention, and a seventeen year old kid from Arkansas opened up for him. That time, Sam was the hottest comic in the country. I mean it was like def Leppard coming to town. It was huge, and so I entered the contest. I won the contest.

On the way over, Sam was like, hey, kid, are you nervous. I’m like, no, I’m not nervous. Kid. There’s going to be thirty five hundred people there to night, and nobody paid to see you. That kid, Ralphie made did well enough that Sam referred him to Sam’s home club, the Comedy Workshop in Houston.

But the Comedy Workshop a close by the time Ralphie could get there, so Ralphie wounded up at the Comedy Showcase of Houston club that catered primarily to black audiences. It was at the Comedy Showcase where Ralphie May learned how to perform.

And now that you have that nugget, if you’ve seen Ralphie’s performances, you…

It was a white kid from Arkansas playing a black room, developing timing and crowd work skills in a context that’s more demanding and more direct than most of the rooms where white comedians of his generation were cutting their teeth. He talked about what that did for him. He said, you can’t hide in that room. The crowd tells you immediately and honestly whether something’s working, and the standard for being genuinely funny rather than technically competent was higher and less forgiving. Then in two thousand and three, Last Comic Standing, that’s probably where most people first encountered Ralphie May.

If you don’t remember that show, I hated it. It was NBC’s attempt to do for stand up comedy what American Idol had done for singing, a competition format with a live audience, real comedians, weekly eliminations, the whole thing. I’ll progress for a second. Why I hated it is there were people doing well on that show because they had a good twenty seconds. They had a good minute.

That’s different than having five or eight or an hour. And I was programming the comedy channels that’s serious, and people would walk down the hole and be like, Hey, how come you never play so and so? And I’d be like, because so and so has twenty seconds of material. I was not a fan. Ladies and gentlemen, how about a big round of applause from Houston, Texas for mister Ralphie May.

Hey, what’s up. My name is Rolfey May. I’m from Houston, Texas. I now live in a place called the Hood. I like living in the Hood.

And my resolution this here, because I’m living in the Hood, is it was not to lose weight, because at this point, screw it, you know what. I mean said, this is more than a diet coke fixed. You know what I’m saying. Kids? My thinging this year was to.

Be correct, not politically correct anymore, Okay, because I’m tired of it. You got to think about what group, and it’s too much. It changes all the time. I just want to be correct, Like I don’t say African American, okay, because I don’t say European American for white people. I say black folks, right, what you’re right?

Right? Plus I live in the hood. I ain’t never met black people. Hear any y’all been to Africa, That’s what I thought, Morgan Dame, yacht or someplace. Y’all being like Compton Americans, right, Inglewood swap me to American Vietnamese New Salon American.

Ralphie was an audience favorite. He was funny every week. He was likable. Note had more than twenty seconds. But who won?

Dad Fan? You remember Dad Fan? Right? Okay, come down here. I want to pack joke for you.

We’ll got to do it right now here we’ll go. I’m just gonna speak English. I’m just later her parents. Hey, don’t want to do that. My mom’s like, fang, that’s not funny.

Do you want to make fun of us? You want to find it? You wanna make fun of ancient time? Do you want to be a smock Iley? Do you want the smock check?

And a PA’s a beil. Like mom, chill out? I know to you, I know, chill that fang. Don’t tell me what to Q. I do want to want to che I till now because I want.

To chew I kill you. See this is what I’m saying about that show. Remember dad Fan? Have you heard of dad Fan? In twenty years?

No? Dad Fan? Vietnamese American comedian from San Diego, who’s fine. He has said in interviews since that he was as surprised as anyone that he one. The audience vote didn’t go to Ralphie.

Ralphie thought his weight was a factor that audiences at the voting stage made a calculation about who they wanted to be the face of the show, and the fat guy from Arkansas lost that calculation. Is that right? Is it wrong? Who knows? But Ralphie finished second.

So a random memory of Ralphie that I have was I was watching the Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon which I’m actually gonna do a deep dive on that as well. And my father loved that thing, and I remember putting it on late at night Millanite, and on comes Ralphie May, and I can’t believe the clip is actually online. I’m gonna play somewhat for you now. I want you to pay attention here. So this is not a Ralphie May crowd, right, this is whoever’s at the telethon late at night and outwalks this comedian.

So it’s not his people. And if you listen here, you’ll listen to him. This struggles a bit of a word. But like the crowd’s not like hooting and hollering. They’re not really reacting early on here he’s not really getting laughs.

But listen to the laughs as he just fights through it. I can’t believe this clip exists. And here’s Ralphie May on the Jerry Lewis Telethon. Ladies and gentlemen, get ready to laugh. We welcome Ralphie May.

I’ve had a great week here in Vegas. I had a great time at the South Point Casino. It’s hilarious here. It’s I’m from the South, so for me, the amount of mullets that are here are tremendous. There are a lot.

Oh my gosh. I set up at Dearstown, not in front of the South Point Cassina away for him to come in. I haunt the mullet Ida, I’ll call him. I’m like Mala Mala, Mala, Mala, Mala Mala Nascar, Nascar, Nascar. I sprinkle little crystal math on the ground.

They’ll come right to you. They really well. If you work with them and build up a trust, they’ll take the tobacco right out of your hand. It’s awesome. They are tremendous.

Now about slipping into a bit of a naughty joke there on Labor Day, that’s great. His debut album Just Correct in two thousand and five went platinum. That doesn’t happen. It happened for Richard Pryor and Steve Martin a handful of others, and it happened for Ralphie May in two thousand and five, then Comedy Central specials Griffa a Nation in two thousand and six, Prime Cut in two thousand and seven, Austentatious in two thousand and eight, too Big to Ignore in twenty twelve. Four full hours for Comedy Central in six years.

There were also two Netflix specials, Unruly in twenty fifteen and Imperfectly Yours in twenty sixteen. It was named one of Variety’s ten Comics to Watch in two thousand and eight. We do have to talk about Raffie’s weight, because that is part of the story. At one point he weighed as much as eight hundred pounds. He talked about his body on stage constantly and brilliantly.

The self deprecation was genuine rather than performed. Some think the comedy industry, at its gatekeeping levels makes esthetic judgments about who gets to be taken seriously, who gets the premium booking, who gets talked about at festivals and industry events as the future of comedy. Ralphie may, by any objective measure of audience size and the quality of his output, belonging to those conversations, but never really broke through. His crowd work was extraordinary probably the best of his generation at the specific skill of taking what was going on in the room and turning it into comedy in real time. But crowd work back in those days didn’t make the highlight reels.

I’m telling you, I saw this guy perform live more than once, and every time I saw him, he killed. He was amazing. The casino years are the most misunderstood part of his career. Ralphie May, for roughly the last decade of his life, built his career around casino residencies and theaters markets that the prestige comedy circuit doesn’t prioritize. The casino circuit done right is one of the most demanding and lucrative ways to build a sustainable stand up career.

You’re performing for large rooms multiple nights a week, you’re developing material at a big pace, and you’re reaching an audience that’s not the usual comedy club crowd, which means you’re actually doing harder work in front of rooms than aren’t. Automatically in your corner, you know, somebody goes, hey, here’s two tickets to go see the comedian. They’re not necessarily going to see Ralphie May. They’re seeing a comedian who happens to be Ralphie May and Ralphie was good at it. I knew Ralphie personally.

At one point we were doing some radio shows on Serious and I hung out with him in La I’ve told the story on the main podcast a few times, but I will tell it again here today. I know at some point I was hooking up with them. Maybe you picked me up at the hotel. I don’t really remember. I do remember that we were driving around in his car and we were eventually going to go to the radio studio, and he asked if I minded if we got some food while he got his car detailed, and we did exactly that.

We went and got his car detailed, and then we got Mexican food somewhere, and just like an awesome guy, cool guy to hang out with. I always enjoyed my time with him.

I would have played his stuff on the air whether he sent me something or not, but I was appreciated that he appreciated that his stuff was being played, and it was genuine It wasn’t some sort of hey, let me butter up this guy so he plays my stuff for Ralphie. Was not like that at all. It was a genuine thanks after I parted ways with Sirius, just as an example of the kind of guy he was. Now I’ve talked about this before as well. In show business there are people who are you know, your actual friends.

I’ve called out Larry the cable guy many times on this show. He’ll come on here. He doesn’t need to do this show. He’s doing it because we’ve been friends for twenty something years. So when I left Sirious and I started working at Slacker, we wanted to do some stuff with comedians being guest DJs, and I called Ralphie and asked him to do it, and he said sure.

They went over to the studio in Nashville and did it again, just favor for a guy he knew that was definitely a situation where that was gonna help me a lot more than it helped him. But sure, no problem, John, happy to do it for you. That’s what kind of guy Ralphie was. I think of him often and I do miss him. He was a really really good comedian and a really really good guy.

Gilius told Rogan, let’s start bringing that up. They asked me to go in the VIP room and I said, no way.

I’ll play clips of that on my audio podcast on Tuesday, as I’ve recorded a little bit ahead summer weekend guys, but Robin’s definitely worth a listen. Uh Starvros on the podcast, and they’re doing a great job getting the clips out there and they are stirring it up. One of the clips is about other podcasters getting political. Stavros said, some of the other comedians have the dumbest opinions on earths. I’ll play that on Tuesday as well.

And he also has tooked about how a list comics just want to be seen as successful as possible. They want to play in arena for a rena sink. They want to be the kind of guy like they want to be on a private jet. That sucks. I want adversity because nobody gets funnier on a private jet.

I think that’d be good. I haven’t seen that show in years and Netflix putting it under everyone’s nose. I think we’ll see an SETV resurgence. Good call there. Late Nighter revealed that Jimmy Fallon won the Late Night A Wards again.

This was a week when Fallon was new and Jimmy Kimmel’s show was showing repeats of Jimmy Kimmel Live hosted by guest hosts, so it’s not really a true comparison, but I continue with my opinion that Kimmel should have worked the summer and not taken the summer off, and he’s opening the door for fan to challenge him as the new king of Late Night. And on tomorrow’s audio podcast, a deep dive about Ralphie May, who was a friend of mine and a really great dude. Got to spend some time with Ralphie. I hear Austin has a comedy scene too, Yeah, in Los Angeles and New York and London. The festival’s third edition will be held September nineteenth through the twenty sixth venues throughout Chicago. More than fifty comedians from twenty cities will perform in showcases. Now all on If they’re from twenty cities, how does that make Chicago the home of comedy discovery? It means like I have to go to Chicago to be discovered.

You know, it’s funny and doing the show sometimes there’s like nothing and that I do one more Google, I find three more things. So I got to the end of the prep today and I typed in Nikki Glaser, Jay Leno and Rogan and I went like three for three. But let’s start with Nikki Glaser. We are at the lake this afternoon. Page six reports Kardashian is ripped by WMA and Niki was enamored with Kim. Nikki has previously said of Kim Kardashian and Nikki is a star hugger. Let’s just be honest about it. She’s a star hugger. Nicki said she was always someone I was like, I think I’d like to get to know her.

She just gives great advice. She gave me some like insane life advice that literally changed my life. It was just a really hard decision I was making, and she just had a respect upon it that no one else could have offered me besides her. Yeah, they pretty much threw a bunch of money, really competent directors and insanely thorough vetted screenplay, and so they am mastered a frankly and same list of banger programming.

And then they get Maggie It. Even if basically nobody watched the show, they would renew it and give the show runner a chance to tell her full story. This is genius on several levels. One, the audience gets to see the full story play out. Two, the directors and screenwriters working with Apple TV.

No, they have much greater support to tell their stories. And three actors are signed with Apple TV. No, they won’t be something dropped on a dime tank. Of all the non flip shows that you started that just like either don’t come back or come back like so long hey in the future, that you’re like, I don’t care anymore.
