The Shark Deck. I’m Johnny Mac who with your Daily Comedy News. How’s this for a tour? Pete Davidson, John Mulaney, and John Stewart. Yeah, only three cities so far anyway, John John and Pete is the name of the tour.

They’ll play Springfield on Friday September eight, Bethlehem September ninth, and on September tenth, which is definitely not Land in Kerman’s birthday. There’ll be an Atlantic City John John and Pete, Pete Davidson, John Mulaney, John Stewart. That’s fun. I had mentioned recently that Andy Killer did not do this year’s State of the Industry address up at Just for Laughs Montreal. Two comments on that one.

I’ve been looking to see what Jessica Curson did. I’ve seen zero media coverage with that, which is just interesting. Kindlers usually got picked up, at least in the comedy blogs. Nobody has mentioned Kurson State of the Industry. Google it if you find something.

Said it to me. I can’t find a thing. But I had also said, you know, Kindler hadn’t been playing nice in the sandbox, and I wondered if that was why Pure speculation on my part. But the other day Kiler was in a Twitter fight. There was a picture of Chris d’lia and Andrew dice Clay side by side, and Kindler tweeted, excellent side by side marketing.

Hard to decide who is more repugnant. Some people defended Dice. Kindler responded, you couldn’t be more wrong. Dice is a well known ahole, an unpleasant, insecure bully. He found a character and ran with it.

The character was a misogynist, racist hact. He’s a reaging, homophobic hate merchant.

And then he wrote, you forced me to say this.

Hitler also found a character and ran with it. Eva Broun said he was a decent dude. I’ll leave that there. I think I’ve met Andy Kiler. I don’t recall meeting dice Clay.

I’ve definitely not met Chris d’lia. Some Dave Chappelle news after a Dave related gossip corner, The Daily Mail tells us Tiffany Hatich looks effortently stylish in gray with gold heels as she arrives at Dave Chappelle’s comedy show.

They were also at Dave Chappelle’s comedy show.

Speaking of Dave, the San Francisco Chronicle says, Dave broke curfew at NAPP…

Remember he did that last year. While it had happened again, the Chronicle writes. Even though Chappelle appeared to be on his best behavior during the second installation of the Blue Note Jazz Festival and Nappa, by the third night, the provocative comedian was up to his old tricks. On Sunday, as the strict TENBM curfew for outdoor events loomed, Chappelle strolled on stage and tease the idea of an encore for a chance. The rapper set Chance, considered it, but he passed the mike to fellow yapper.

Yasine Bay, also known as Most Deaf Bay, took the stage and performed to the approximately seven thousand. As the song concluded, Chappelle reappeared on the fog filled stage for his customary end of the night monologue. He was clutching a red solo cup. Chapelle set my God, how do you close a show this great? My gut, what did we all see here today?

Shout out, it’s a blue note. Thank you for getting me with some of my closest friends and greatest artists of all time. He then thanked the festival’s co host. He then led yet another sing along, this time to Bobby Caldwell’s nineteen seventy eight soul hit what You Won’t Do for Love, and he joked, sing it with me if you know it. If not, keep your mouth shut, keep your white lips ut.

He then re christ and Nappa Valley, quoting the chronicle, this is Nword Valley. Now we taking over. We moving in. Come on, y’all, let’s move in. Welcome to Nword Valley.

The houseman joined in, providing backing to Chappelle’s gruff voice, with a smatter of people in the audience singing along, but mostly just hooting and hollering. With a literal mic drop. Chappelle abruptly brought the festival to a close sometime around ten oh five, and then he said, what I’m trying to say is I’ll see you next year. Bitches. You may recall last year.

Chappelle threatened to never return to Nappa after getting ticked off by the regions noise ordinances. Chappelle insisted for two nights in a row last year that the headliners continue performing past ten pm and through an onstage tantrum. After the musicians were unplugged on the final night of the festival. At that time, Chapelle said, I’ll never drink a couple of wine from this dusty ass field this year. Other than the curfew breaking night, Chappelle was quite up.

One night. He rapped with don’t forget to pick up your trash when he leaves so we could be invited back. I want everybody to behave everybody would be quiet when you leave, for the white people sipping wine out there. Hassan Minag is being i’d as the leading candidate to take over the daily show once we have late night shows. Again this from Variety.

I think he is the right choice. I feel bad for roy Wood Junior, but Hassan is younger and just feels like, yep, the right person to be in that chair. Variety cautions us Minhaj is not guaranteed to win the position and a deal is not believed to have been finalized recently. Hassan said I’m definitely open to the conversation. It’s also a family conversation.

Now it’s a very different conversation than when I first got hired at the show when I was twenty nine. My life is in a very different place, and so that’s a bigger life family convo. It changes a lot of things. It’s an all encompassing, all consuming thing, and other people have to live with the consequences of what I say, and I just want to make sure everybody if that were ever to come to fruition, Hey, are we all on board with this? A spokesperson for The Daily Show declined to comment.

Ralph Barboza is recording a special tonight. He’s actually been taping two shows since Wednesday at six and nine. This is at the Kessler Theater in Dallas. I said Valas four times and had to edit it out. What is valis?

Dallas? Kessler Theater is where off where Boss is recording his special, he said on his Instagram page. Netflix came through. It’s right across the street from the old barbershop where he used to work and get my haircuts. Did you know you can name a cockroach after your ex lover and have it fed to the animals at the zoo.

AJ is described to me as stylistically manic and artistically brilliant, crown best in the Midwest at Guilda’s laugh Fest Nice Jeff Stonick is on that show. He’s a Denver based comic by way of Whiz Kids. It’s written here and did I do that right?

Because comedy reflects that path. Jokes from a Midwesterner grappling with the Woo Woo Wild West. JP Martin on that show as well. Semi finalists in the twenty twenty one Minneapolist Funniest Person Contest. Third place winner of the second annual River Cadet Comedy Competition in Sioux City, Iowa.

Jeremy Plum is on the show. He’s been at this for about eight years. Out of Omaha. Jeremy recently appeared at Snow Jam and in the World Series of Comedy. Nice Miss Keisha on the show as well.

There’s a lot of people on this show. She began her comedy in Chicago in the early two thousands, had to take a little break there for some personal stuff, and is back on tour now. That’s great. Carl Pekin has been performing in the Colorado area for ten years and the description says he’s pretty good at it. Jeff Nelson is a comedian from Denver by way of Kansas City.

In twenty seventeen, he won the Kansas City Comedy Festival. Eight o’clock is a stand up comedy showcase featuring Ben Roy. Often compared to Lewis Black or Bill Hicks due to his passionate ranting approach. If you can’t make it to either of those. Are you in Vegas?

The comedy seller in Las Vegas has Dean Edward. It’s Aristotle AUTHORI he was on SNL for one season. I think Monique Morvez, Jay’s Even and Mark Cohen. That’s a good lineup. Two shows tonight, seven and nine thirty.

Michael Yo is on tour. His tour kicks off tonight in La Joya. They’ll be heading to Nashville, Atlanta, Ontario, Canada. Not sure why I had to say the word Canada. There could edit it out.

Michelle Brazier tells Shortol she’s going back to the fringe because I want to play with my friends and connecting with audiences from the other side of the world is so awesome.

She also says there are not enough dogs in the shows and ask is it legal to bring dogs to shows in Edinburgh and Australia. I have a guide dog ambassador dog called Eva. The Shark Deck. I’m Johnny Man with your Daily Comedy News. Neil Brennan spoke to the La Times and telling them I was writing a joke the other day about the upside of psychopathy and drugs, and I started to think about how Rick James said cocaine is an ell of a drug. To me, it’s a meme now you see it every day, even if you don’t know anything about it. But I was actually there.

That was the first thing he said to me during that conversation we filmed. It was so funny and so weird. At that point, the TMZ tour bus pulled up. That distracted Neil, who said I was eating here at one of these tables once and the TMZ bus stopped and asked if I would talk to the bus. I was like, none of these people know who I am.

I always say I have the NBA referee level of fame, where people have seen you, but they have no idea who you are. Ironically, I ended up with an elevator with somebody who worked in the NBA once and I was like, do you work for the Clippers? Are they going to stay in LA? And he was like, yeah, but what’s your name. You’ve come up on my algorithm.

The Desert News caught up with Ryan Hamilton. Everybody knows Ryan Hamilton is from Idaho. You’d have to be an idiot to think he’s Canadian, right, right, Yes, so anyway, The Desert News talked to Ryan said that Ryan Amilton apologizes for talking too much and for name dropping when he mentions his friends Chris Rock and Jerry Seinfeld. They headed over to the Village Underground. Hamilton leisurely makes his way on stage, and then in an instant, the Ryan Hamilton I was talking to just seconds before expands into Ryan Hamilton the performer.

His smile, bigger eyes, wider voice, louder. He dances intentionally poorly as the house band plays, and he spends the first minute or two joking about his overwhelming whiteness. I dance like your cousin at a wedding.

And then he tests out some new material about generational differences.

He shares that he was hit by a bus one year ago. A number of people in the audience gas Ryan joke. If someone says I got hit by a car, people go oof. I’m so sorry. But if someone says I was hit by a bus, people go ooof and then imitated someone snorting to keep from laughing.

It’s a strange accident because it feels common, but it’s not common. We talk about it as if it happens a lot. We reference it all the time. Once you get hit by a bus, you’ll see it’s just the most easily accessible hypothetical death. I don’t know why, but I’m here to tell you to live your life because you might get hit by a bus.

Eight hundred pound Gorilla News, the former laugh Button, was the site they put an item about could Tina Fey takeover for Lorne Michaels on SNL. I’m not sure it’s actually news or just recycled old news, but they quoted a source who said I’d be surprised if it wasn’t her. Seth Meyers has his own show. Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg won’t come here. Judd Apatow passed on the job years ago.

Amy Poehler has her own stuff. Bill Hayter’s directing a movie. Kate McKinnon is two hots from podcast News Daily. They took a look at Donald Trump’s inability to get on the Joe Rogan experience. Rogan recently said I’m not a Trump supporter in any way, shape or form.

I’ve had the opportunity to have him on my show more than once. I’ve said no every time. I don’t want to help him. I’m not interested in helping him. The Daily b says Team Trump is hoping to pressure Joe Rogan to have him on, even threatening to go negative on Rogan if he doesn’t.

Advisor Roger Stone has suggested a UFC styled cage match between himself meeting Stone, not Trump and Rogan. Apparently Trump listens to Rogan, he doesn’t taken in as personally, and Advisor said the drama bills an audience for when it eventually happens, okay. Margaret Chow was the headliner at the second annual comedy fund Stable Friends Stable fundraiser for LA based women’s treatment and recovery organization Friendly House. Righty says during Chow’s twenty minutes set, she discussed the Supreme Court’s reversal of rov Wade. I haven’t menstruated in a while, but when I heard that Rovie Wade was overturned, my uterus rose up from its casket, looking for an iron maiden concert.

My Filippian tube started popping and locking. I dropped an egg, a dinosaur egg. Anybody my age or older, We’ve lived with women’s rights, fighting for women rights for fifty years. The loss of that right really brought out the Atlantis anger. I think we all got our period out of her age.

Margaret also recalled her time on Dancing with the Stars and said it made her parents very proud because they love ballroom dancing. They acted like I was in the Olympics. They made me food in these little boxes to make sure my nutrition was dialed in. They would sit on the side and watch me rehearse. They were so nervous the whole time watching that, that they were moting this low pitch moan only I could hear.

Fellow contestants included Bristol Palin, daughter of former Republican governor Sarah Palin, and Choe said I miss those old Republicans. They really weren’t that bad. I feel so bad I’d talk so much stuff about them. I apologize to George W. Bush wholeheartedly.

The old Republicans weren’t as offensive as the new ones. Now. They’re like, all pronouns are patriot. It’s a noun they should be reading books instead of burning them. I challenge any insurrectionists to spell insurrectionist.

Choe addressed her own gender identity, saying I’ve never quite felt like a woman or man, and I always felt there was something in between. So having the option to be different as a statement to the world, saying I don’t have to be where you want me to be and I am more than what meets my thighs. She tagged it with I don’t change my pronouns. I’m too old, I’ll forget. The rest of the lineup included Daryl Hammond, Otsko at Kaska, Stephen Randolph, Sarah Rose Highland, and Drew Lynch.

Are you getting ready for MO Day? Well? On September sixteenth, Houstonians can celebrate Houston native comedian Mo a Mayor for Moday. He’ll be performing at Dubaio Music Center. Mayor Selvester Turner made the announcement, Moe represents the kind of talent we want to see more of in Houston because we support our artists, our writers, our comics, and people in the entertainment industry.

Moe announced he’ll give a portion of his proceeds to his alma mater, Hastings High Schools Theater, Arts and band department. He says, it’s a blessing, come back, come and enjoy the day, which is going to be about community, about laughter, about music, and truly is a celebration of Houston outside of myself, because I couldn’t made it without Houston. Hunter Hill is on tour. He’s been opening for Eliza Lessener and Taylor Thomlinson will He’s got his own tour now in October, he’ll be hitting to Houston and Dallas, Austin, Chicago, Denver, San Diego, Portland, Boston, Phoenix, Seattle, and Portland. Hunter Hill Comedy dot com for information and from New Zealand stuff.

Thirty three year old comedian magician Jared Fell tells us about performing on a cruise ship. He leaves his family once or twice a month to board a cruise, which usually lasts between four and seven days. During the week, he’ll perform two forty five minute shows back to back on one night, often to quite a few drunk bogans. There’s my favorite word again, bogans. The rest of the time, he’s basically a passenger, he says.

The one downside is when you’re stuck on a ship, there’s no escape in the crowd, who always recognize you for the rest of the trip. It’s even worse after a bad show. You’re stuck on board with everybody and they see you eating and they come up to you in the elevator. It’s a week of heckling and if the show goes well, they think they’re your mate. That’s why I always hope you’re on the last night.

After the pandemic shut down touring the club that he worked at stop booking and fell lost his gigs. So he approached the ships directly and he offered to come on board, and they were like, can you be PG? And I was like, I’ll give it a go. He says he’s still edgy, he just doesn’t swear.

And now there’s no sex toys.

The Shark Deck, Johnny Man would You Daily Comedy News? THEO Van had Hulk Hogan on his podcast and they started talking about Hogan’s wrestling career and the topic shifted to Hulk’s girlfriend, Sky Daily. Hulk said she’s been around me a little bit now. THEO said she’s beautiful. THEO continued to praise her beauty, but then THEO suggested she’s better than Hulk is and looks, and that caused Hogan appears slightly offended.

Would there be some fisticuffs or is Hogan a professional wrestler who knows? But Hulk quickly clarified that THEO Van is not his type and playfully advised him to hold his horses back. Rain Wilson was up at Just for Laughs last week and said, I literally made dozens and dozens of headlines when I revealed on Bill Maher’s Drunken Smoky Rambling podcast that I had been deeply unsatisfied at times while working on the office. Dozens of dozens of outrage inducing clickbait articles for digital surfing pleasure, Yeah, including podcasts talking about it. Wait what the weird guy from the office was making millions and getting nominated for the Emmys, and he was unhappy.

The point I was making a bill, said Rain Wilson, was in context filled with nuance and vulnerability. Was just like all human beings. I was never really satisfied. Whatever success I had as an anchor, it was never enough. When I was on the office, I went through periods of time when all I could focus on was the things that were not happening in terms of my career, money, fame, envy, prestige.

Here’s the catch in comedy circles in Hollywood. The cool kids all pretend they’re nerds and losers and alienated outcasts. But really that’s just an act, and there’s no greater way to estrange yourself even further from the apex of the comedy industry is when you discuss God, the soul of spirituality everyone in the comedy where old especially are quite literally flushy manifestations of anxious discontent. Actors look for last from sitcom audiences, stand up comedians look for the approval of live audiences and clubs, and comedy artists take to youtubeer TikTok to portray bizarre characters or storylines for likes and fan bases. However, it must be said.

You’re also familiar with this idea if you work in insurance, solar panel sales, uber driving, agriculture, the manicure and pedicure industry, because duca is everywhere these days. I was unfamiliar with the word duca dukha. The Internet tells me it’s commonly translated as suffering or pain rain continued comedy is an active service. The thing that surprised me over the years around the success of the Office was how much it meant to people. The roll the show played in soothing folks during difficult times, providing healing laughter, bringing families together, and healing anxiety.

Humor is the best of all possible medicines. TMZ says Pete Davison is hitting back on the road. Good to hear that Pete is out of rehab. According to TMZ, Pete will do some stand up gigs in Fort Lauderdale, Florida this week. From Rolling Stone, country star Jimmy Allen, who I’m unfamiliar with, apparently two weeks ago, countersued two women who filed lawsuits alleging that the country singer sexually assaulted them.

Well, Jimmy Allen is going to tell jokes on a comedy tour. Now, he announced a brief runt of shows which he’s calling the I Said What I said comedy Tour. He announced this on Instagram. He was smiling and shrugging. According to his insta, the three shows will be in October and our invitation own.

He didn’t announce the cities and where the venues in which he’ll appear. Allen wrote, I said what I said, and I’m gonna say it again during my three night comedy tour coming this October. All shows are invite only, so be sure to sign up with your email via link and bio would receive the latest news and had to win tickets. Apparently, mister Allen will also perform at the first Annual Salute to American Heroes, a fundraising concert in Clear Order, Florida, on November fourth. Jim Gaffigan announced some dates Cairo November sixteenth, re Odd November eighteenth, Dubai.

In November twenty five, Rommy Yuseff was also up at Just for Laughs. He told the audience about his Egyptian born father discouraging him from becoming an entertainer. He was always like, this is a beautiful hobby. For you to have grow the hobby. But I remember him clearly saying one day, real life is going to start.

Rommy also discussed mixing his religion with his performance, saying, I had this big thing when we were shooting the first season of the show and we shot the scene where I was praying, and I was like, should I be doing this? This is weird? This is what I do in my personal time. Did I just sell this to the Disney Corporation some quick cows cleaning? Thanks to Cheryl who bought me two coffees at buy meacoffee dot com slash Daily Comedy News.

That’s a good way to support the show. You got to buy me at coffee dot com slash Daily Comedy News, and there’s some money in the tip jar. When I got the notification that Cheryl had bought two copies, I happened to be at breakfast. I was at Cafe Zara and ann Arbor, Michigan, eating breakfast, and I immediately put the coffee money to use. Thank you, Cheryl.

Also thanks to everybody who weighed in on last week’s interviews. For the most part, they were well received and I’ve been encouraged to do it more. I think I’ll do more around the Toronto Festival.

Also want to shout out Tom who shot me a note about the show about another to…

And to unnamed person, I think you instant messaged me, so since you didn’t do it publicly, I will hold your name back. But you know who you are. Who sent me a note about how to get rid of the pet odor in my basement studio. It seems to be gone today. I wasn’t thinking about it.

David Spade announced the Catch Me Inside tour. It’ll start September twenty three at the Town Hall in New York City, then onto Wilkesbury, Las Vegas, Colorado Springs, Sacramento, Houston, Fort Worth, Las Vegas, Baltimore, Philly. Information at Davidspade dot com. The Fringe Festival starts on Friday. Some of the shows include Dan Tiernan’s Going Under.

It is said that Dan embodies both a giddiness and ferocity on stage, from high energy mania to perfectly crafted gags. The Australian Army chopper was conducting a joint military exercise as part of Operation Talesman Saber.

It crashed in the waters off the wit Sunday Islands on Friday. Captain Daniel Lyon, Lieutenant Maxwell Nugent, or an officer class to Joseph Laycock, and Corporal Alexander Naggs were named by the Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Simon Stewart as the four involved in the crash. The Shark Deck. I’m Chunny Mac with your Daily Comedy News. It’s August first, so I am in a complete panic. I love the summer. I love going to the beach.

I’ve only been to the beach once all summer, and it’s August first, So however you split it. Time is running out on the summer and you’re talking to somebody who Once July third happens, I start going, oh my god, summer’s almost over, because I’m a crazy person. Jim Gaffigan spoke to Variety and said, I must have auditioned for Letterman for about six years, and I was the last of might be your group to get on a late night show. And one of the reasons I got it is because he was doing a week of new comics. They couldn’t use anyone that had been on Conan and Earthly Tonight Show.

It felt like the perception of me really changed because of Letterman saying, oh this guy’s funny. Suddenly I was getting weekend spots at the best clubs, and all the people I try to meet with wanted to meet with me. You know, Jim, you know I feel bad for you. You know you’re starting out your career, and then you’re so thankful that somebody helps you, and then you know you probably would remember those people and call them back when you little more success, and they were like, hey, you know, once you come up and visit the satellite radio station that you used to hang out at, and you know, we could have you on a show or do an hour special with you, like we did when you had your first special. You could come up and you could I heard the Jim Blue people off.

That’s what I heard. People told me that I digress. Jim said. It led to Comedy Central giving me a half hour, which led to me being able to sell out comedy clubs, which led to my first special, Beyond the Pale, which just propelled me to everything I’m doing today.

Also also possibly maybe you’d have to ask Jim lots of airplay on satellite r…

Jim went through a period of testing out different personas in those early years. He tried being the angry guy or the political guy, for realizing it lacked authenticity. Jim said, sometimes I’ll read someone and think I wish I could write like that, But the truth is that’s not my personality. That’s not my point of view, and your point of view is important. He started leaning into his strengths, a likable Midwestern fellow who makes jokes at his own expense about being lazy and mediocre.

Jim said, it might be a little exaggerated version of myself. I probably pretend to be more grumpy than I am in real life. NBC dot com understands SEO with this headline. Hey, remember when TikTok comedian Matt Rife showed up in Brooklyn ninety nine. I clicked on it.

It worked. Apparently. Matt Riefe was in a twenty nineteen episode of Brooklyn ninety nine. He played Brandon Bliss quote, the most popular kid in school at Jake Peralta’s high school, Jake played by macpacker Andy Sandberg. Bussell caught up with Osco at Kassa and he said, it’s five fifty on a Wednesday, and the tables are already packed at a comedy show.

It’s rare to find that partygoers shop on time, let alone ten minutes early. Osco was doing a six o’clock show on a Wednesday. What’s that about? Bussell should have asked about that? Oh, this was the one for the deodorant company.

That’s why I was at six o’clock. What a weird show? Well, she telled Bustle at the deodorant show, I want people to feel seen. Sure, I talk about things that annoy me or I’ve been traumatizing or whatever, but I like to build a community and make people feel not alone and apparently not smell. She began performing in twenty twelve.

She helped found disorient Ed Comedy with the orient between two Slashes, the US first mostly Asian American female stand up tour. It was only within the last five years that she realized comedy could be an actual career. These days, she hangs out with Chelsea Handler. Lasko said, it’s still hard for me to understand when I go to a city that had never been to when the shows are sold out, and I’m like how as an immigrant and someone who didn’t dare to dream big because I was so scared that things wouldn’t happen. It still hard as sometimes process go WHOA, people are here to see me.

Her mother and grandmother never saw comedy as a career. They were like, all right, this is comedy, all right, we have no idea now I’m the only comedian my family knows her comedy heroes. Margaret Show was the first comedian I ever saw a perform on DVD. I was fifteen, and honestly, I was so shy and not very social. To watch something go that could be me, that’s a level of confidence I didn’t have back then.

It took a while, but it took trailblazers like Margaret Show to help keep that dream alive. Her approach to humor, you should played your strengths. I had a joke about feminism that was very subtle, but it was still very meek because I was silly at first. I joke about how I didn’t know my husband had been doing the laundry for the past five years. It’s a true story.

When my husband was like, althought you were doing it sometimes, and I was like, I really thought I was doing it sometimes, but I don’t know how to turn the washing machine on, so I guess I’ve never actually touched it, and then she tags it with that’s feminism. Hulu, for some reason, has an ounce a new eight episode series for an unscripted series about Wayne Brady and his family. Untitled series will pull the curtain back on the life of actor, comedian, host and singer Wayne Brady. What’s he doing when he’s not hosting Let’s make a deal? While he’s co parenting his twenty year old daughter alongside his ex wife, saw mate and business partner.

Wayne and his ex have a production company together, and part of that production company is his ex wife’s life partner of twelve years, Jason The Ex and Jason Just Had a Son. Untitled show will give viewers a raw, unfiltered look into the personal lives of Brady’s blended family. While their family dynamic is unconventional, the reality series will reveal the unexpected points of view and values that most people, including his own family, have a hard time understanding. The Comedy Sellers doing some streaming. Hosted by Richard Roanovich and featuring six national headliners including Yamanika Saunders, Jared Freed, Pat Burster, John Bishop, Ethan Simmons, Patterson and Zarnagarg Good lineup Live from the Comedy Seller Saturday, August fifth, eight o’clock and ten o’clock Eastern. Gnomed Warman, who owns the Comedy Seller set it’s been proven we laugh thirty times more when watching comedy is part of a live audience compared to watching alone at home on our devices. With Live from the Comedy Seller, we’re giving comedy fans the opportunity to watch over sold out shows live and uncensored without having to go to New York City. I’m always in favor of not having to go to New York City, and I’m from New York City is a nightmare to get to.

I think in sixteen ten or whenever, they didn’t think, Hey, this little island here is surrounded by water. In four hundred years, it’s going to be really annoying to have to cross the bridge. They didn’t think that far ahead. Well, I can’t blame them, but it’s annoying. Chris Fleming has a new comedy special coming to Peacock August eighteenth.

That’s called Chris Fleming Hell. It explores performance anxiety through surreal comedy, sketches and more. Fred Armison is back on tour. It kicks off today at the Beverly O’Neal Theater in Long Beach. It’s the Drum Chords Tour, and he’ll show you that you can play drums and be funny at the same time.

Beverly O’Neal Theater, Long Beach, tonight, Mahoyat tomorrow, then on the sixth, Arkansas, then the eighth, Massachusetts, then on the twelfth Alaska. Fred who put this itinery together? California, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Alaska, and then Texas. Get a map, dude, Unless you think TikTok is stupid, we got this covered. It tells us about a comedian documenting his journey from the Bear Newby to being a real life Kurmi.

You see, there’s a TikTok trend where people say, yes, chef, if you’ve seen the bear, you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t seen the bear, you’re like, what is he talking about? Trust me, yes, Chef, It’s the thing people say. The TikTok trend features people aggressively cooking in their kitchens like they have orders to fill and people to impressed. People are obsessed with throwing around phrase yes Chef.

Viewers and fans of the show are getting a big laugh out of people recreating the intensity that is Kermey’s kitchen. The Bear is nominated for Emmy’s for like Best Comedy, which I don’t understand. I liked the show a lot, like seriously a lot, but I don’t find it be a comedy anyway. Someone named Emma Jacobson on TikTok visited at Kassama in Chicago to try out some of their breakfast sandwiches as seen on The Bear and mfun. The line was way out the door due to hype from the show, and Emma waited an hour and a half for the pickup order, which is just crazy, but apparently it was worth the wait.

The Shark. Deck Rubens, the actor who made pee Wee Herman famous, has passed away at age seventy. Him Johnny Macken. That is Today’s Daily Comedy News. Paul passed away after a private battle with cancer.

A statement on his Instagram on Monday said that Ruben’s privately fought cancer for six years. He put out a posthumous statement which read, please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing these last six years. I’ve always felt a huge amount of love and respect from friends, fans, and supporters. I loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you. His character Peewee was created in the nineteen seventies as a ten minute bit when he was with the Los Angeles comedy troupe of the Groundlings.

Paul auditioned unsuccessfully for Saturday Night Live in nineteen eighty. He then went about creating The Peewee Herman Show, which was billed as a live on stage TV pilot and had its premiere in early nineteen eighty one at the Groundlings. A national tour followed, and in nineteen eighty one HBO broadcast a version of it as a comedy special. I remember watching that back in the day. Nineteen eighty Rubens had a small part as a waiter in the Blues Brothers movie.

In that same year, he played a put upon hotel clerk who deals with Cheech and Chong in Cheech and Chong’s next movie. Peewee started turning up on late night talk shows, including Late Night with David Letterman, where Peewee doing his thing and Letterman doing his too cool for school thing was comedy gold writes The New York Times. Then in nineteen eighty six, Peewee’s Playhouse, a children friendly version of Peewee’s World that aired on CBS for five years. May recall some of the characters, including Cherry, a talking arm chair that gave hugs. There was a word of the day, there were bizarre toys, and one episode, Pewee married a fruit salad.

In nineteen eighty nine, Rubens told Newsday, I never set out to do a big educational show. We’re trying expose children to as much creativity as we can muster in half an hour, to be entertaining, and to transmit some subliminal messages like nonconformity isn’t bad. His career came to pretty much a halt. In nineteen ninety one, Rubens was arrested on a charge of indecent exposure at an adult movie theater in Florida. That led to a small fine, headlines, tons of jokes, and was pretty much over from there.

CBS had a ready canceled the Saturday Show, but upon this scandal ended all reruns of the program. Rubens pleaded no contest. He was sentenced to community service, and as part of that service, he produced two anti drug public service announcements. He had some acting credits Murphy Brown, The Blacklist, Buffy the Vampire Slayer in nineteen ninety two, Batman Returns, and The Movie Below in two thousand and one. On social media, Jimmy Kimmel wrote, Paul Rubens was like no one else, a brilliant and original comedian who made kids and their parents laugh at the same time.

He never forgot a birthday and shared his delight for silliness with everyone. He meant my family and I will miss him. Conan O’Brien on social no tweet can capture the magic, generosity, ortistry, and devout silliness of Paul Rubens. Everyone I know received countless nonsensical memes from Paul on their birthday, and I mean everyone in all caps. His surreal comedy and unrelenting kindness were a gift to assault.

Damn this hurts. Kathy Griffin wrote, the great Paul Rubens would send me hilarious gifts every year on my birthday. I didn’t know he was ill. The last time we spoke. I invited him to one of my dinner salons, and he expressed that he didn’t want to come because he was worried about COVID.

Came to my house after my Trump photo scandal and spent time with me. Danny DeVito said, really loved working with him. Sander Bernhard said, a true genius. Glad I got to work with him. So sad.

Scott Ackerman wrote, incredibly sad in to hear of Paul Reuben’s passing. Watching him on Letterman and then seeing Pee’s big adventure in nineteen eighty five was like a lightning bolt into my brain, waking me up to what was possible in doing comedy. It was the greatest throw of my life to first interview him, then work with him on the TV show, then befriend him socially. I’m sure he did this for all his friends, but he would send me text and funny gifts on my birthday every year. Wow, everybody’s saying the same thing.

And then last year, out of the blue, he sent an incredibly touching personal birthday video message. He also went out of the way to send several variations of blurbs for the book, which were all hilarious and different. You would always tell me on the phone or an email, we had to get together in person, after all, we’re neighbors, he’d say, But then he’d politely declined any invite I would send him, and I had no idea what he was going through the whole time. Treat yourself to some of his work today, this week, and your whole life rip to a true artist and rebel. I almost worked with Paul if you’re a drive by listening saying you haven’t heard the podcast before.

I ran Serious XM comedy for ten years two thousand four to early twenty fourteen, and we used to do these pop up radio stations where we would just create a radidio station and salute one artist for three four days. And we had a plan to do a weekend celebrating Peewee I think in conjunction with a DVD release maybe, And two members of my staff, specifically Mark and Jason, were very very big Peewee fans. So we were going to do this thing. We’ll celebrate Peewee for the weekend, all right, what are we going to do? And the guys came up with the idea of we would play a sound effect which would randomly generate what category of clip we were going to play, you know, something from the show or something from a movie.

How where it was going to work. The sound effect that the guys picked was for a slot machine, so you’d hear a quarter go in, you’d hear I don’t know, and you’d hear some wheel spin you go ding ding ding, and then a voice would have said something like Peewee’s playhouse. All right, so ding ding ding movie clip. Something like that was idea. So we sent it off to Paul’s camp for approval, and they thought we were being a holes and that something something pulling the lever of a slot machine.

They thought we were being coy and eluding and making fun of something you might do in an adult movie theater. Involving pulling, you know, never occurred to us in a million years. The station never happened. We tried to explain, Paul, I’m sorry, that’s not what we were doing. It was just a slot machine to get into which clipper are we going to play?

So it never happened somewhere maybe unless somebody threw it out. I haven’t worked there in ten years. There’s an interview sitting there. There’s all these clips, there’s a production, serious guys. Somewhere in the computer.

There’s a Paul Rubin’s special waiting for you to air if you can get somebody to clear it. But it never aired. Paul Rubens seventy years old. See you tomorrow. Hi.

The Shark Deck. I’m Journey mag with your Daily Comedy News. Let me tell you what’s going on. As I’m recording this, it’s like ninety seven degrees and I’m in my office where I record these things. And my dog who’s almost sixteen, Okay, so she’s a million years old, and then some and I have a lot of patients.

Accidents happen, but she peeted on the floor of my office, and the combination of that, which I did clean up, and the odor, it’s not fun in here today. Guys.

Speaking of pets, nice segue.

Ricky Gervais recorded an announcement he’s interested in some pet legislation in the UK. Let’s listen, dogs really need your help. Dog theft is up thousands of dogs every year and now being stolen from gardens and parks, and the crime is treated the same as if that person stole a possession like a bag or a phone, which is ridiculous because there’s no deterrent. The sentence isn’t right because a dog isn’t an an animal object that can just be replaced. A dog is a member of the family.

So you need to change this law to make it a real determinent, please help. And while we’re starting on serious topics today, John Stewart had a message for veterans or the families veterans about something called the Packed Act, and I’ll let John explain. Hey sounds Stewart, I got a little message here for anybody who served and was exposed to any kind of toxic materials AG and orange burn pits and all these other things. They’ve passed the Packed Act, which expands medical benefits to survivors and veterans and medical care. Please file for those benefits, and if you do so before August nine, then you’re eligible to get those benefits back dated one year to when the Pack Act passed August tenth, twenty twenty two.

You can file for benefits under the Packdact any time, but if you do it by August nine, or even just go to va dot gov slash Pact Act and say intent to file, that’ll hold your spot. But if you do that, you can get it done. That’s for anybody explosive, you know, any theater of war that has terrible toxic things or military basis, or even just if you’ve been through Jersey, just driven through. I don’t know that that would qualify it. But bit Shud, a documentary about women who accused Louis C.K.

Of sexual harassment and the consequences those accusations had on their careers, will be one of twenty two documentaries heading to the twenty twenty three Toronto International Film Festival. The documentary is titled Sorry Slash Not Sorry. Remember I told you that?

And then showtime was like yeah.

Rolling Stone asked Tom Sigour to tell them a little bit about the project Fat Astronauts, and I was right. It’s a project with Bert Kreisher. Sagore said. It came up on the podcast Bert floats this idea, and we end up talking about it off Mike Moore extent. We talk about it more about some producers.

We talk about it more with Ethan Cohen, who wrote Tropic thunder name Drumper. Cohen sends in a draft of a screenplay, I read it, it’s hilarious. The feature world is peculiar. It’s not a straightforward business. There’s so many variables.

I’ve heard nothing but excitement from the whole camp about doing this, and I’ve been told everybody’s gung ho about doing it. But I’ll reserve my real excitement for the day. On Onset doing It, Rolling Stone ask Tom Sagora about his transition into acting. Tom said, truly, dude, It’s always been what I wanted to do. I moved to La to become a comedy actor and stand up, which is working for me, and obviously I enjoy it, so I kept doing that, but I never stopped wanting to be an actor.

And I like writing and creating, so that was the project. When I took it out on the studios, they were like, you can act, and I was like, yeah, no kidding. I’ve been trying to do this for f and twenty years, but I’ve been on the road. Taylor Tomlinson tells Variety she equates digital work to quote doing radio back in the day. You just have to do it to sell tickets.

A lot of people, myself included, get overwhelmed with the amount of content you after produce now, but it’s necessary unless you’re super famous, and even then you need Instagram. On the plus side, says the Internet has made it so much easier to find your specific audience. Nobody is truly for everyone, and now you don’t have to be Whitney Cumming spoke about social media, and told Variety she’s way more concerned about disappointing somebody who came to see her because she’s working on new stuff and it’s not super polished than she ever worries about being canceled by some fake Twitter mob that weren’t comedy fans in the first place. She remember as comedian actor Bobby Lee telling her when she started out, don’t worry about jokes over the first two years, just worry about getting comfortable on stage. Johnny Mac, you never talk about that.

Interview Mark marinh had with Jim Gaffigan a week ago. I know, right, this part I found very interesting. They’re talking about Jerry Seinfeld here as I’ve been doing. I’ll read the Marin lines a little harshress. I don’t have to keep going Jim’s head.

Mark said, I’ll start with Mark here. Everybody wasn’t doing specials. They were they were still special Jim, there was Cosbi and you know, you know Carlin. But like my point is, what’s the next step. Like Seinfeld has done a couple of specials, but he doesn’t feel the need.

There’s no growth there. He’s very anti growth. Well, no, I actually think it’s very much evolved into what into this guy. It’s his comedy’s just for laughs and doesn’t have any deeper meeting. And I’ve just never learned anything from a comic and it’s just a read and it’s ridiculous and that’s our job, Jim.

But I think that’s his kind of absolutist approach to comedy. But I’m diametrically opposed to that. Now. What I’m saying is if you look at the Jerry Seinfeld of the late seventies or ladies and you look at them now, they’re very different. Jerry Seinfeld today is much more autobiographical.

In the eighties, you didn’t learn anything about Jerry. I’m sure he’s aware of that evolution. I think the greatest comment of comics being able to transcend a decade, So being able to go from the eighties to the twenty twenties, that’s pretty significant. That’s why they’re like these comedians that are like the flavor of the year and then it goes away. But I think that speaks to a work ethic more than evolving.

Jim. Well, it’s a work ethic, but it’s also like not listening to the audience. But it’s listening to the culture and also like all his fans. You know, it’s rare if you come to be a certain way and your fans are kids and you’re in college. You know, how do you hold on them because they’re forty now and they don’t go to comedy Jim.

Yeah, they all moved out of Brooklyn or whatever because they had a couple of kids and they moved to Westchester. I think what’s also interesting about Jerry’s where he’s similar to a nineties comic, which you and I are, is that he’s a substance over style guy. Jim continued, You’ll see even just on social media, there’s a lot more crowd work. It’s all CrowdWork, banter stuff. And the whole thing is that style that’s not substance, and I’m not criticizing it.

And by the way, you know, Ian Meg is the best CrowdWork comedian I’ve ever seen. Remember Mike Sweeney. Mike Sweeney was amazing. Maren Yeah, he got out a long time ago. You know the guys who realized early on that trying to be a comedy star it makes money as a stand up.

That’s a long shot. I’m gonna write, but I understand what you’re saying, but I see this whole new generation of social media driven comedy. It’s just this weird attempt at a cash grab, and it’s succeeding that there’s no organized show business anymore. Mark Marin’s WTF guest Jim Gaffigan highly highly recommend you check that out. One way to support the show, that’s pretty easy.

Go to YouTube, find Daily Comedy News, hit subscribe on the page. I’m trying to get to a thousand subscribers so that I can monetize it, and then I can buy my own coffee, and then I don’t have to nag you to go to buy meat coffee dot com slash Daily Comedy News, although honestly, I’ll probably do both when I you will, Johnny Mac, You’ll be on here going, hey, why don’t you go to buy meat coffee dot com slash Daily Comedy News and throw five bucks in the tip jar, and I’ll go to the Nashville Don’t shame blah blah blah. I can see me doing that rap. Yes, yes, yes, yes. Mike Kaplan is apparently giving Harry Kunnabullu a run for most serious comedian.

Harry’s interviews as have later been a little looser. Mike Kaplan’s heading in the other direction. He spoke to the Henley Standard, and he says his brand of comedy makes you think. Quoting Mike, Philosophy is something that I’ve enjoyed thinking about for quite a while, both in school and out, because there are so many beautiful, important questions it offers, like how can we live a meaningful life? And why are we here?

And what’s going on? He’s excited to see what happens at Fringe this year. When we came to the Fringe last time, I experienced so many things clowns and dancers and magicians and storytellers and immersive theater experiences and circuses and more. I’m looking forward to experiencing more of those, and also things I have no idea about. I guess what I’m saying is I hope to experience things that I have loved that are familiar, and things that I will love that are unfamiliar.

He adds, there’s a quote by a poet named Robert Hass that I love. Repetition makes us feel secure, Variation makes us feel free. So it is true that I like to use my brain or my mind to think about things like wait, am I using my brain in my mind to think about things? And some of those are things I enjoy sharing in my comedy wherever I go. Believe it or not, he’s really funny, but boy, the interviews are serious.

Forbes asked of beer daz Hey, who were the comedians you looked up to growing up, and he said, my top three, we’re prior at Carlin and Eddie Azard Carlin for not giving a huge prior for putting vulnerability in a comedy and turning pain into comedy. And Eddie because he makes you feel like he made it up a second ago, even though it’s exquisitely written. What’s your favorite drink? Interesting? He said, I’m a beer guy.

There’s nothing like a Guinness in black, which I can’t seem to find in America. And I’m like, oh, what’s a Guinness in black? I used to drink Woodpecker cider with guinness on top, which I guess is the opposite of what he’s talking about. So what’s a ginis? And Blackie said, it’s a black current syrup, which is ridiculously sweet, and then a guinness poured on top.

The beer becomes purple and it becomes like a weird Voldemort drink. Then I have a beer I launched called Fact one, two three four, a’s between the F and the K. I wanted something that met me halfway between beer and cider. So that’s my favorite. Yeah, good call.

I think we could drink together. Maria Bamford spoke to The Pleasantine Weekly and said stand up was great for me, as I had difficulty connecting with people on a social level due to oct Intrusive thoughts in the controlled environment of this stage is very common to me and it remains to this day. She warns you if you’re going to see you through, my act isn’t for everyone, so please YouTube Maria Bamford because I’ve gotten feedback that I’m odd and wordy, so let that be your guide. She says her approach to comedy has changed as she’s grown and become more experienced in the industry. Maria said, my time is done in terms of feeling like I need to be heard.

I’ve already made it a thousand times over, and I hope to support the next generation. I love performing and creating, but there’s less drive. In a lovely way, I just taped a special for Comedy Dynamics and so my current tours the result of three years of writing and performing. I hope to gradually start replacing material, but it’s safe to say the topics of family, relationships and mental health done with several character act outs, those will be covered. That is your comedy news for today.

Questions Answered in This Episode

What is Craig Ferguson’s new podcast about?

Craig Ferguson is launching a podcast called ‘Joy Coma’ that explores how people cope with life’s challenges and find joy. He interviews guests from entertainment, science, and government to discuss how they overcome darkness and form personal meaning.

Why was a worm named after Conan O’Brien?

A marine biologist at Clemson University named a newly discovered worm species after Conan O’Brien because of its physical characteristics—being long-bodied, pale, with a slight tint of orange, resembling the late-night host.

What did Jim Gaffigan say about celebrity narcissism?

Gaffigan discussed how celebrities who achieve extreme fame ‘touch the sun’ and can never fully step away, comparing it to Trump’s political ambitions, suggesting narcissists are drawn to the attention and power rather than the actual role.

What is Tom Segura’s approach to fitness?

Segura explained that he stopped viewing fitness as having an endpoint and instead made it a continuous lifestyle. He realized that treating a number on the scale as the finish line leads to relapse, so he now maintains consistent clean eating and exercise habits.

What did Steve Hofstetter say about marijuana legalization in Minnesota?

Hofstetter joked that once marijuana is legalized, states need to provide free school lunches because parents will eat all the food. He noted that it takes time for states to transition from poorly-regulated markets to professional dispensaries like Illinois did.

The Shark Deck. I’m Jenny Mac with your Daily Comedy News. Craig Ferguson is starting a new podcast. I’m not sure the title’s gonna work for SEO Craig. It’s called Joy Coma, a podcast as launch as this week.

On the first the show, we’ll see him interview a broad range of guests from the worlds of entertainment, science and government as he asks, how’s our joy doing? Is it bridled on life support? Where do we find joy in the world? It seems, by any rational measure, to be collapsing around us. A good set of initial guests include Gabriel Iglesias, Tony Hawk, Angela Kinsey, Kathie Lee Gifford, Diedrich Bader we know him from The Drew Carey Show, Lewis Black, Wendy Malick, Shirley Manson, and Tom Papa.

Ferguson said, I feel like I’d let everyone down by not doing a podcast. I feel like I’m the last person I have a podcast. I couldn’t really see a way to do it for a while. I had to have an idea for it. I didn’t want to just be me talking on zoom to people that I met once Eventually I came up with the idea for this one.

This makes me feel good might be a good timing for him since there’s no late night shows right now. Ferguson compares the idea to the BBC series Desert Island Discs in a sense that it’s not really about the format, it’s about the guests. The drive of Desert Island Discs is obviously music, but the drive of this is about how you cope. How do you see your way out of the darkness, how do you shake off the demons, how do you form your own personal Saint Anthony Craig said, it’s my hope that as time goes on, I can talk to people who are not in show business and who may have a challenging or different approach to Joy. For example, if you talk to a homicide detective or a pediatric oncologist, these are very different, catastrophic at times things to deal with.

Sady survived because Joy is a coping mechanism. I’ll do a quick plug for my podcast. While you’re listening to my podcast. My other podcast is called five Good News Stories, comes out Monday and Thursday. It’s a quick hit like this, and I tell you five good news stories only good news, so it’s the number five good news stories.

Tom Sagora was on theo Van’s podcast talking about working out, no not working out material, working out your muscles, and Tom said I would get to a certain point and now not have them at tality of like, oh I got there. It’s almost like the race is over. I’m done. Now I’m good.

And then what happens is you get back to old habits and you get out of shape,…

Then you go all right, I’m gonna work out and eat clean, and then you lose weight and you start to go, oh, I did it. I got to the number again, and then you just pull back, and I got really frustrated by that. I was on tour. We were working out on tour, but not really dialed in on food, and the tour is like aggressive, like NonStop. But I remember that I got back to La to shoot this thing.

I was shooting this pilot I had written. I was covering the whole production, and I remember I was in the wardrobe fitting for it, and I was like, oh, this sucks.

And then I left there after that week, and I was like, I have to take this mo…

But the difference is that I no longer go if I see a number that I like on a scale that means I’m good. I realized, you have to do it like that. There’s no end, It’s just continuous, right, So I just made it part of what I do. I know that I want to eat certain types of food that are good for me, and I’m not saying I’m the most strict dude ever, but there’s so much more clean eating. And I like the workouts.

I like being active, and I feel like I’m very fortunate that I have a full time trainer, so not everybody has that. I totally understand that it’s a huge advantage. All week, I’ve in picking away at Mark Marin’s Great Interview with Jim Gaffigan, as I’ve done all week. I’ll do some lights of voice acting, reading the Marin lines a little more aggressively. Gaffigan said, Obviously, in my twenties, I wanted to be as big as Letterman or Seinfeld or you know, Jimmy Fallon or John Stewart.

But I think now I’m like, oh, once you touch that sun level of fame there is, in a way no going back. I’m not saying we don’t like attention. We go on stage and make serious laughs. We’re not normal. But like when you’re on the cover of Rolling Stone, when you’re like heralded as a modern day philosopher, I think that seeps in.

And even when you say thanks everybody, I’m done, they all seem to come back after a couple of years ago. Hey, remember when I said I’m done anyway, I’m still done, but I’m doing this thing now. There’s nothing wrong with that. But it’s weird to see. And I think it’s a comment on that they touched the sun and they got that flavor for it.

It’s like Trump running for president so he doesn’t go to jail. Or is he running for president because he likes the attention. It’s not because he wants to be president, right, I think it’s because he wants the attention. Marin. He tasted being the most powerful person in the world.

I used to do a bit. It never really worked about. Like, you know, he’s the only narcissist that ever fully six seated. He did it. Narcissists around the world are like, he nailed it.

A worm has been named after Conan O’Brien. Yes, a species of Nemorarurian worm. I could redo that, but I’m not going to. Discovered by a Clemson University marine biologists five years ago, affects the reproductive performance of Caribbean spiny lobsters, which, as you know, are a critical species in the Caribbean. And Sonio Bieza And with a name like that, you know this dude is handsome, right?

Should I look him up? He’s an associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. I’m looking him up. One hundred percent. Nailed it and Sonio discovered the new worm while researching public behaviors of the spiny lobster Penurilius argus in the Florida Keys.

Again, don’t come to me for scientific pronunciation. He named the worm after Conan because of his physical characteristics, being long bodied and pale with a slight tint of orange. Did you enjoy my time with nath VLVO on Friday’s podcast? I did. Early in the interview, he made a joke that I kind of ignored about how he was in his rental.

Well, if you go to real estates dot com, you’ll find the article Nate Valvo why Melbourne comedian will rent forever. He says, I do get jealous when I go to people’s houses and they’ve got things nailed to the wall and they’ve painted something, and I wish more Melbourne rentals had longer rental agreements. It’s been annoying every year having to see if you extend. I’d happily sign a five year lease. He has some tips if you’re looking for a house, stay off Instagram on Sundays.

That’s the day people post when they buy a house. That’s the day you see the photo of the person you didn’t like in high school standing in front of a sould sign and it ruined day. And if you do see it, reports the image as offensive. Steve Hofsteader spoke to WIZM. He was discussing legislation in Minnesota about legalizing recreational marijuana.

Steve had an interesting take. You said, the problem is once you legalize marijuana, you have to have free school lunches because the kids are gonna be hungry because their parents are eating all the food. Missouri just legalized it and they have no idea what they’re doing in Illinois, right over the border where it’s been legal for a while. You go into a dispensary and it looks like an apple store, and as it looks like some guys tight eye basement. They haven’t caught up yet.

It’s wild to see. So I wonder how long it’ll take Minnesota to go from basement to business, because it takes a bit. Congratulations to stand up comedian Eric Rushton, who’s been named as the first winner of the Channel four Shawn Locke Comedy Award. The new prize was created to showcase talent to do writers and performers who embody the alternative comedic spirit of Shawn and Channel four in the UK. Shawn Loock died in August twenty twenty one after veloping cancer.

The award was presented by his friend, a fellow comic, Bill Bailey. Eric the winner will now be given an opportunity to kickstart his own career in TV comedy. He’ll get five thousand pounds to support his live work, as well as a script commission from Channel four’s comedy team and a one thousand pound comission to write a script for the broadcasters digital strand. Channel four said since his comedy debut In twenty fourteen, Eric has been impressing audiences with his intelligent, playful material and likable, self deprecating stage persona, and twenty twenty he won the prestigious Lester Mercury Comedian of the Year Award. Eric says watching Shawn Locke was a huge part of my childhood.

I’m such a huge fan and I can’t think of a better person and to be associated with that. It’s your comedy news for today. Father show for free on Apple, podcast, Spotify, YouTube. Trying to get to a thousand subscribers on youtubes. I can monetize this thing.

The Shark Deck. I’m trying to make with your Daily Comedy News, as they’ve done most of the week. I’m going to pick away at this wonderful interview Mark Marin had Jim Gaffigan on his podcast, really fantastic if you haven’t listened to it. I transcribed it, and I’m going to read to you and I’ll do some lights of voice acting here. Neither of these is meant to be an impression, but I just want to stop doing.

Mark said. Jim said, Mark said, Jim said, so, I’ll start with Jim Gaffigan, who said, you know, it’s weird because like for comedians, we never see each other and so like if you see some texts and they don’t see it and it goes down their thing, we interpret it. Like I remember one time I texted Bill Burr and I was like, and I waited a week and I called him and I’m like, I can’t believe it didn’t call me back, and he goes, uh, I did text you back? So I went back to the text he did. Maren said, yeah, because we’re babies.

Jim so, yeah, So like Naper Gatsy, he probably met his dad. These are solid people. You know Maren his new special. You know, he’s doing something. I’ve talked about it with a couple of people that I’ve never heard somebody sort of isolate a specific type of Christianity as phenomenon and talk about it like, you know, I’ve heard Jews talk about it for black people talk about being black or whatever.

But his sort of a take on his parents being the sort of new version of born again. Then he’s like they’re generation as of his siblings as they grow less discipline. It was very nuanced. It was actually, you know, kind of a brilliant piece of comedy. Jim.

Yeah. And it was also a commentary and birth order. I’m the youngest of six kids, and my take was that my parents were completely mentally ill by the time I was a teenager because they’d been tortured by five teenagers and they’re like, what are you smoking? And I’m like, I’m twelve. I’m just sitting here.

But thanks for the idea. Rolling Stone talk to Tom Sagora about his recent special and said, one joke that you cut is the Ted Cruz neighbor interaction one. I’m curious why you cut that. Did you not want to deal with the bull crap that’ll come from it, Segora said, I’ll say exactly why I cut it. I look back on older specials.

In my opinion, they’re all too long. I look back on stuff and I go, I should have cut that. When I was editing this thing, I wanted it to be as close to sixty minutes as I could make it, and wanted to trim anything that feels filler ish, feels dated, or doesn’t feel evergreen. So I ended up cutting three bits and trimming twelve minutes from the special. The cruise one really popped online, but it didn’t feel evergreen.

As much fun as it was to tell, and the pop was so great. Oh that reminds me. Thanks to Cody, who had posted this on the Daily Comedy News podcast group, Cody, I apologize I didn’t mention this earlier in the week. It’s actually Monday as I’m recording this episode, so I didn’t forget you all week. I just didn’t publish my thank you to you all week.

But Cody shared this clip. Cody, I’m typing to you right now, I wrote, Hey, thanks, I’m pre taping Saturday and mentioning you right now. You could find this exciting interaction on the Daily Comedy News podcast group Cody, thanks for putting that under my radar? Where was I? Sagora said?

The cruise one really popped online and didn’t feel evergreen as much fun as it was to tell, and the pop was so great, Rolling Stone said, can you walk me through that day? It’s one thing to find out that Ted Cruz lives in your neighborhood. It’s quite another to have this exchange with him, So of course said, to be fair, I do end the bids saying it may or may not be Ted Cruz. I try to leave it up in the air. It was a surreal interaction.

Somebody’s literally going to start the conversation with are you the comedian? And I go yeah, And he goes, where do you think the term mmer comes from? And I was like what? And he was like, that’s your joke, right? And I was like what and he goes, that’s your joke.

I was watching your thing. Isn’t that your joke? And I was like, what part of my joke? And he goes, effing your mom? I mean, I had no idea where this was going.

And he goes, do you think people do that? How many people do you think do that? And I really did go more than you wanted to be and he goes, yeah, but how many do you think? And I was like, how many people bang their moms? And he was like yeah, and I go, I don’t know, man, And then he went right into its otter bangers.

I cleaned it up a little. Rolling Stone followed up and says, does this interaction take on a new dimension given the porn video that his Twitter account liked? It was incesty step mom porn. Segoria laughed and said, yeah, guys, a creep. Bad Feeling Magazine caught up with John Marcos SERRESI.

I’m a big fan of John Marco. He was selected one of jess for Laughs New Faces last year. He traffics in observational comedy with an edge. Trained as a dancer, he has transitioned to comedy. You heard my interview with him last week.

John Marco teld Bad Feeling. You know, I was always a theater kid. I went to college for musical theater and I do a lot of clubs in New York. That’s where I kind of grew up as a comic. And you’re at these stages that are just a couple of bricks thrown together, you elevated half an inch off the stage.

And being at JFL and being one one of these massive theaters, suddenly all those dance classes that I took in, all those thousands of dollars that amounted to nothing in my acting career, suddenly I said, Oh, I finally have room to move. When I got on that stage at JFL, I thought, oh, this is where I can shine. This is where I can’t be too much. And his plan was to test that theory this year. They asked him about incorporating crowd work, and he said, I think originally I leaned into it because, you know, it’s a weird time to be a comedian.

You have to put out constant output, but you don’t necessarily want to put out all of your material. And I think I saw one or two shows where I saw an audience member whisper a punchline to their friend. I said, Oh, that’s it. No more posting my current material online. I’m just leaving the crowd work.

At first, it was hard because the reason I became a stand up comic was because in conversations I like to be the only one talking. But I found it just keeps me in the moment. You know, I can get bored doing the same joke every time. When you’re talking to someone you feel alive. It could go south, you know.

I might say to someone, oh, so your parents are divorced. They’ll go dad killed my mom. Then I have to think, how do I make this funny? How do I stay on the edge that keeps you feeling alive, that keeps you feeling scared in a good way. So I do enjoy mixing it in when I feel like I’m ready to take the risk.

I had one recently I felt good about. I was talking about horses because my dad’s a horse guy. Have a lot of theories about people who like horses a little too much. But this person ended up being They’re kind of a civilian horse detective, so whenever there’s a missing person, they volunteered to do search and rescue with their horse. And ultimately through talk to them, we found out they’ve solved zero cases and I’m pretty sure they just hamper any investigation.

It was fun, the excited amount of finding out they’re a horse detective and then finding out that maybe they’re the worst horse detective in the world, and maybe horse detectives aren’t really needed that much. Mattail Lane is on tour the Al Dente World Tour. He’ll be at the Win in Las Vegas at two nights. The new tour kicks off on the heels of his latest comedy special hair Plugs and Heartache. You’ll find that on YouTube.

Let’s take a look at jfl for tonight, the last night of the festival. I’m going to miss this twelve thirty in conversation with Please Don’t Destroy one o’clock faith in comedy. We’ve seen British already, Nimish Patel at seven thirty.

All right, let’s see.

Let’s do Rammy you sef. I would like to see him do stand up. I like him a lot. Jesselynick, you know, love him, but we can see him on Netflix. So that’s why I’m making that choice.

That’ll take us to about nine o’clock. I think you got to do varieties ten comics to watch Showcase. If you’re falling my lead here, you know, you go there to see the next wave. So we’ll do that at nine thirty, and then that’ll walk us up to the late shows. But boy, I’m gonna miss Late Night Down Understand again.

So many tough decisions at just for laughs and for something different, let’s do Martin or Bono for the midnight show. As that sound not, I’ll put a rap on this festival. The next one out of Just for Laughs is Toronto. That’s September twenty feet through the thirtieth. I’ve done that festival.

That’s a good one. Maybe this year I’ll do that one since I wasn’t able to do Montreal. Andrew Scheltz, Ronny Chieng Leslie Jones, The Office Ladies, Jonathan van Ness, Marlon Wayns, Nicole Buyer and Sam Morrell. I’ve already been announced for that festival. The Shark Deck. I’m Johnny Mac with your Daily Comedy News. I realized I’ve been swallowing the D and saying something like comedy news anyway. Hi, Nath Valvo is my guest today. He will be the final portion of today’s podcast.

I didn’t know much about Nath, Australian comedian. Fantastic, You’re gonna love him, so stick around for that. A couple of recommendations for you. Jim Jefferies was on the Two Bears One Cave podcast maybe about a month ago. I caught up on that really great listen.

Also from about a month ago, the episode of Kilt Tony where they list theo Van as the guest, really really funny episode. The civilians who went up and did kill Tony were hilarious. Plus Ron White gets up and does a pretty strong minute. So Ron White maybe not as retired as we were led to believe. I have not yet, as of this recording, seen either Jim Gaffigan or Mark Norman’s new Specials, but The New York Times is seen Gaffigan.

Some spoilers coming up here for their review. The headline pretty strong. Jim Gaffigan’s quintessentially American comedy gets darker and better. They’ll still joke about fast food, but on Dark Bail as ten stand up special, his evolution as a comedian is apparent. The Times asked, have we gotten Jim wrong?

All along? The pandemic he tells us has made him question mortality. Gaffigan, dressed in a black suit and shirt, imagines his own funeral. He wants an open casket with him sitting up crumbs on a shirt, arms occasionally raising like a marionette, while the recording of him says don’t worry, I’m in a better place, before adding just kidding, I’m here. It’s an unexpectedly creepy visual, and after telling about cremation, Gaffigan adopts his signature second voice, asking when is he going to do the food jokes?

The Time says Jim has been prolific. He’s put out five specials in six years, with this one on Amazon Prime being the best of the bunch. Wow, and his last one was really good. Jason Zinneman and The Times, who is just a fantastic comedy writer says Gaffigan’s patient delivery was there from the start, but his early albums might surprise those who only know his famous persona. He cursed and talked about sex, and came off more as an annoyed son than a grumpy family man.

In twenty fifteen, he told Mark Marin his earliest acting experience was pretending to be happy when his dad came home. His tone had shifted by two thousand and six, when he had his first special, Beyond the Pale, which included the signature bit about hot pockets. Gaffigan now fifty seven can seem like Jerry Seinfeld in his Sticky Freeze, making an elevator is a casket on a string, and the ordinariness of his subject matter. His focus on single subjects can be knowingly preposterously long. Who else does ten minutes on horses?

There’s an element of showing off look at how I can make foliage funny, but also the excessiveness, the stubborn commitment of it that gets its own laughs. He constantly interrupts his jokes to comment on them, and plays with expectations through formal trickery. His new work reveals his move into more storytelling, elaborate act outs and jokes built on deceptions. An example, my parents aren’t vaccinated. They’ve been tad for decades, but enough with the excuses.

He has also become slightly more political in the Trump barr even letting loosen an uncharacteristic rant on social media. Gaffigan now performs the kind of interweaving jokes only a season comic could pull off. These are less the standard comic collmacks than variations on a theme. It’s the work of a pro. The only time you see gaff constrain is in his personal material.

When he moves into stories about his childhood in the second half of the special, you wish he had a director to draw him out. Then again, his buried anger is such a source of his comedy that you wouldn’t want to see him go too deep. Strong review from The Times, looking forward to that. At the time of this recording, the only review I’ve seen of Mark Norman’s special comes from leisure Bites. I’m unfamiliar with leisure bite but they say and again spoilers here.

The episode starts off with Mark sharing a joke about the controversial Epstein Island, even threw in some famous celebrity names regarding the island. Leisure Byte says, that’s some brave move. They write comedians usually are ready to face critics, and with that in mind, Marked in’t compromise on spilling offensive jokes. When a viewer asked him for info about his private parts, Mark straight up gave an offensive comeback which made the crowd gag. From the beginning to the end, Mark Norman had jokes that covered lgbtq I A plus his personal life, including his wife, societal norms, drugs, dark side of rich people and whatnot.

People weren’t into dark humor and get ticked off quickly at such offensive jokes will surely dislike normant, but truth be told, comedy is called comedy for a reason. I’ll see if some more reviews come up, and I’ll watch it myself again. Just really busy week in my personal life. De Montreal Times has done a great job covering Just for Laughs Montreal. They had several reviews and several previews.

They spoke with Alan Davies, who hosted British Davies first performed at Just for Laughs back in nineteen ninety five and said, I loved it because Just for Laughs is such a well organized and well supported festival. Amen on that I must have made quite an impression because they asked me back twenty eight years later. Davies will also be part of the lineup at The Gallow, hosted by Eddie Zard tonight. He said, I better make the most of it this year. I have a feeling the next time I get invited back will be twenty fifty one, when I’m eighty five years old.

Steph Tolav has been on The Nasty Show. She told The Montreal Times. I love doing crowd work, but not a hateful way. I mostly poke fun at the men in the audience my shows, but more the silly stuff I bring back to myself. Actually, I’m more of an aggressive comic on stage, but in a fun way.

Everyone is secretly dirty and perverted. It’s something that’s relatable to all of us. They also reviewed at The Nasty Show and Just for the Culture. At Just for the Culture, a festival favorite, Alonzo Bowden excelled as the show’s host. He definitely set the tone and warned up the audience for a night of culturally diverse comedy.

Who was a strong, solid lineup. Two comics really stood out. Zarnagarg left the sold out show at Club Soda convulsing with laughter at her observations of family life within East Indian culture. One of her jokes Indians have only one pronoun doctor, the other one who crushed And I’ve been telling you about this guy. You paid attention.

Jean Marco Serezi see yes. His closing set dealt with such issues as anti Semitism, stereotypes, and visiting a gun show in Florida, was filled with so much hilarious angst it was reminiscent of Woody Allen’s stand up circ in nineteen sixty four. The Nasty Show, meanwhile, was nasty with a capital in. Host Mike Ward proved with his monologues why He’s the bad Boy of Quebec Comedy. Toronto comic Steph Toolev hit the Nasty ground running with her buzzsaw voice for Netteck delivery and raunchy audience interactions.

Minnesota native Jeffrey Asmus was another audience favor with his acerbic takes on book banning in Florida, why there are French street names in Montreal and nine to eleven. Listen to this joke when Jeffrey had a conversation with a New Yorker about nine to eleven and said to him that he couldn’t find Minnesota on a map. Jeffrey replied, neither could Al Qaeda. Montreal Times, continuing to crush it, They went and saw the Lucas Brothers and said with impeccable timing and rhythm, whether they were completing each other’s sentences or echoing them, the brothers provided a NonStop, entertaining show and the spectrum of topics where almost like no other comic or comedy team could tackle them, whether it was life in Newark, twin discrimination by singletons, trying to get the black vote for Bernie Sanders in Iowa, having a movie night with members of the Black Panthers, or pitching jokes to Martin Lawrence and one more. The Montreal Times caught one of the midnight surprises.

The one they caught host Joel Nicol Johnson got the crowd pumped up by talking about her trip to Taiwan and meet her boyfriend’s family in her time as a substitute teacher at a middle school in south central La Alonzo Bowden worked out some material for the Nasty Show. He dealt with turning sixty one and the difference between having sex with young and middle aged women. John Marcos SERRESI killed it with new material. See you’re paying attention. I would telling you about this guy for a year now, John Marco Serezzi.

Marco’s jokes included trying to buy condoms at a seven eleven in the middle of the night. New Zealand comic Rizela Carlston related what irritates her at supermarkets, especially customers who get to touchy Philly with the produce. Arthur Simeons share the joys of having a seat in an airplanes emergency exit row, and Britannic the pair of SNL writers brought sketch comedy to a whole new level, especially when their wireless microphones died right in the middle of a sketch. Montreal Times awesome job, Thank you out Today on Apple is the Beanie Bubble. The film features zach Alafanakis as Tie Warner, the eccentric businessman and founder of tye Ink, described in the movie as a stuffed Himalayan cat business, which one on a manu actual beanie babies rate it r one hour fifty minutes weirdness on the set of Beetlejuice two, says Vulture.

Vermont State Police reported the two props, A one hundred and fifty pound statue and a pumpkin lamp post have been stolen from the set of Beetlejuice two. Should I say that word a third time? No, I’m not going to You’re not tricking me. I would like to thank the supporters of the show, so you can go to buy me a coffee. Dot com slash Daily Comedy News, you can buy me a one off coffee, or there are a few members out there and I want to thank them at least once a month.

So Tommy, thank you, Andrea, thank you, Gary, thank you, Shannon, thank you, Mike, thank you, Kenny, thank you. The show also got a new five star review from w f HV J H D B k UF on Apple Podcasts, who gave the show five stars, wrote great, great show, nice content. Thank you with the voco fus. I don’t know how to pronounce your name. I’m sorry.

Nath Valvo is the host of New Faces of Comedy International. That show is at seven o’clock.

Nath has his own solo show tomorrow at the Cafe Cleopatra in Montreal at nine o’clock. If you’re up early and you’re on the East Coast, jump in the car and go see him. I didn’t know too much about him until I started doing prep for the interview, and he’s awesome. I really really enjoyed this conversation and thought about it for a few days. When we jumped on the zoom, he had a backdrop of the Golden gate Bridge behind him, So that’s what we’re talking about at the beginning, and having a couple of laughs over that.

Where are you right now? San Francisco? Can’t you tell me? Are you? Actually?

Are you in Melbourne? Just see my rental property in Melbourne. That’s good because I had Melbourne topics prepared. I would have had a wing the San Francisco stuff. I think I’ve changed it as a joke, and I don’t know how to change it back I was down in Melbourne in twenty fifteen, as you know, what a fantastic city, just amazing, Like there’s reasons it wins Best City.

Do you know who really loves Melbourne? People that live here, so we have to keep it a secret. But no, absolutely not. We’re well aware. I think the classic thing is people from Sydney or other parts of Australia hate how we talk about how good it is to live here.

Oh I landed and we went over to the Botanic Gardens and just, oh my god, this is beautiful. The rest star on scene with the little streets in between, that’s really cool, a great scene. Yeah, yeah, that’s It’s like, it’s I love it. I don’t. I have no huge desire to go anywhere else.

Yet we went over. We went over to the Darklands. I guess they were just starting to build that up, and there was a sports apparel store and I love having random sports apparel stuff, so I bought us say and Kill the Saints hoodie and I was going to wear it for the interview and I’m like, no, that’s too try hard, don’t do that. But I’ll wear it around and anybody who knows what it is walks up to me and like, can’t believe that I have this thing in New Jersey? Oh yeah, I mean it’s also probably a good idea to not put a footy jersey on to talk to the gay comedian.

But you know, we can. We can pretend we can have a footy chat if you want, I can. I can pretend I’m talking to an uncle at Christmas and give this a crack. Melbourne is absolutely completely football obsessed, so even the gays here no a thing or two because it’s too hard not to. We can’t escape it.

And the Melbourne star of Ferris Wheel, the big gigantics to Ferris Wheel. I’m talking to you like you don’t know what he is. I’m telling the audience what it is. It’s a bit Jane Fairest wheel. It’s closed, right, Are they taking it down?

R? I P. It’s it’s done, it’s finished. It’s They built this wheel and then for some odd reason, it couldn’t handle the heat, so in a couple of days when it hit like forty degrees, it melted and stopped working. So they’ve shut it, they’ve shot it, take it down.

Are you’re just gonna have this like weird it’s just there. They light it up. Sometimes when there’s a big event on or a big game, they light it up. That looks nice, But that’s been the That has been the go to joke for many a comedian for about ten years. Whenever we had nothing else to say to a c if we were losing a crowd, or we’re doing some boring gig like a corporate or something, just just talk about the Docklands wheel and you get the crowd back.

It’s a it’s a go to. So you’ve probably picked up I’m not a comic. I’m a radio guy by trade doing my research. I see you did a little radio yourself weekend mornings in Melbourne. Yeah, I did a lot of radio.

I used to. Not I still do, but yeah, I used to love radio a lot. I think I wanted to be on radio more than I wanted to be a comic for a little bit when I was young. I love radio. I did.

To prove that I could do it, they put me on the one am till five am shift for three months, three nights a week. That was weird, talking about pop music at two thirty in the morning to the truckers of Australia. That was my stripes, and you were alive, no voice tracked. I was live. Yeah, they let me prerecord some stuff, but that was so I could learn how to be live.

And look, I’m better at talking than I am at pressing buttons. And there may have been issues. My favorite. This is very nerdy radio talk. But I had to on on the Friday night shift.

I had to. Then when I left in the morning, I had to take it to Nationals, so I had to connect it so it would go to the national broadcast coming out of another city, whatever that meant. And had to do the count down and get to time out perfectly and finish your break exactly on the right second. And oh, look I finished. I thought I did a good job.

I left the studio. I went down to the car park, got in my car and there was nothing playing. There was dead air and I was like, oh, I think that’s my fault.

And then Britney, I’ll never forget it, Britney, Britney Spears Toxic started…

And then I had to run back up and some engineer was calling the emergency phone that was in the studio. Look, I took the radio station off air for so long that there’s an emergency song that kicks in after there’s like three minutes of dead air, and it was Britney Spears Toxic. There you go. My listeners know that I like to talk about the international comedy scene to city extent that I can follow it from here walk me through. My sense of it from Afar is that the USI seen is it’s got American style stand up, but it also has that British style of the what do you call the thirty minute show that you take to Edinburgh?

Just see my face drop when I said an hour? Actually it’s an hour show. We have to do yep, mix of both. Yes, good question, Yeah it is. We have a huge festival culture here, so we’ve got the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the Melbourne actual the Melbourne is the big one that’s like the third biggest in the world.

So Australian comics kind of learn from a young age to build to your hour every year. So we’re churning out an hour every year. No one needs that. A lot of us don’t need the hour, but we’ve got at Our country is not big enough to tour for much longer than a few months a year, so weird. We all we churn out a lot of stuff because we kind of have to.

Now, how do you mix building a fresh hour every year with feeding the TikTok beast. Yeah you sound like my manager, but thank you for that. Get on the TikTok, Nate more clips, come on, post more go viral. Yeah, it’s that’s new. That’s a big chat that’s happening now.

That’s only about a year old. That chat. I think about comics really starting to notice the TikTok stuff. A lot of cameras being set up now at rooms that never used to be there. So you go down to the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday night rooms to test your new material, and there’s all these cameras at the back now because all the comics are filming all their little club sets in case there’s some crowd work that goes off for TikTok.

It’s like, oh God, I’m supposed to come here to test my jokes, Steve, they’re good or not. I can’t be bothered.

Also wondering about having some red hot back and forth with an audience memb…

So yeah, that’s definitely changed the club seeing. But yeah, I mean it’s a good question. It’s like, how do you burn on TikTok? What do you wait for for your shows? What do you hold on to in case you get something like JFL Montreal.

We’ve got to, you know, do stuff that hasn’t been filmed before. Like it’s a it’s actually it’s getting hard to decide what you should keep, what you should put online, you know. It’s Yeah, it’s becoming pretty overwhelming, to be honest. If I climb up on Old Man Mountain for a second, here we go, is it maddening if you’re working in the traditional sense and churning out an hour and maybe somebody who looks a little more handsome with their shirt off than I do has a really good forty seconds. And are you saying that?

How do I feel about hot comedians? Is this what you’re trying to tell? Yeah, go away, hot people. Comedy is for the underdog. Comedy is for the rest of us that got bullet in high school and had to be funny to survive.

Get off the stage. Hot comics, starm over the kidding. Look, I am I am one of those people. Fortunately that I’m all for it. I think everyone wins if more people are getting into comedy that don’t normally get into comedy.

I like that. I like seeing people blow up online that gets people to go see them live, because that means that person they might see a poster for someone else, or they might go, Hey, that hot guy from TikTok’s funny. Maybe there’s other funny comedians out there. I feel that. I think it’s a good thing, and I think you can’t be too I also do say to some of my comics when we get when we start bitching about and gossiping about the comics that are blowing up online, I actually think it’s a good need to remind yourself that most of the time those people that are going to those shows probably were never coming to yours, So just chill out, you know what I mean.

I just feel there’s a lot of people in the world, and I don’t think he could stress too much about people going to other people’s shows, because you know, there’s enough for everyone. I think, sure. So the scene, Yes, do you mostly play Melbourne rooms. I’m just trying to translate it into Americans. So is it like bouncing up and down in Manhattan and then Sydney would be or whatever I want to compare it to.

Yeah, there’s a really healthy room culture here in Australia, especially Melbourne. Bellman’s got four or five pretty fun, great rooms that most of us do. I don’t do rooms all the time. I write a lot. I’m a real heavy writer.

I don’t really get on stage and say something until I’m pretty certain I’ve got the out. I like crowd work in my solo shows. I think that can be a bit fun, but I don’t really I don’t tend to do that. I’m a pretty lazy person. I like staying inside.

So if I’m leaving my lund room on Wednesday night at ten o’clock to go to a room, I’m gonna get the most out of it and really try a bit and really write it that, you know, and really see if the punchline works. I’m not really a comic that works it out on stage. It’s really I’m not really a comic that And they’re great, and I’m jealous of those comics. So I think it’s a real skill to be able to, you know, chill and chat to the front row and see where this bit goes. And let’s all have a nice time.

I don’t really do that. I kind of make sure I know beginning, middle end before I jump up, So yeah, I write more. You’re hosting New Faces International. I usually make it up to Montreal and catch one or two of the New Faces shows, usually the Wednesday night shows. I’ve never done the International one.

You know, a new face can be a loose term the comedians who have been doing it eight, ten years, and hey, it’s a new face for you. How new are these new faces? I’m sure if I go, nine out of the ten will be new to me. But for you, especially you host, Well, you’re gonna love this down there, you’re gonna love this. They haven’t told me who’s on yet, so it’s not only a New Faces show.

It’s a new for the host. I don’t know if it’s going to be like a reality show with their hand the name before I have to introduce them. They have not set me the lineup yet, which is very funny, so I don’t even know who’s on it. The New Faces thing is funny because you’ve nailed that thing about comedy. People seem to think you get discovered very quickly, and it’s so rare.

I know, almost no comedians that got a big break or really cut through quickly. I think comedy most of the time, not all the time, but I would think the majority of the time it’s a slow burn and then something could click on ticktock, or something might happen at something. But most comics I know that have blown up at some point had already been doing it for many years. So, like this New Faces show I’m hosting, which is very exciting, I have actually been doing stand up for fifteen years, so I’ve done thirteen I’ve done thirteen solo shows. I’ve done thirteen hours.

So it’s a lot, right, thank you, And I don’t look at thank you to them a lady that gives me botox. But yeah, so it is. It’s that the word new is give or take. I feel when it comes to something like Montreal. Yeah, yeah, I agree with that.

And to your point, and kind of back to the TikTok thing. You know, somebody might have a great forty seconds four minutes, but you don’t have forty five at some point, and it takes a while to find your voice in your rhythm. And absolutely, yeah, I agree, and I think it’s Yeah, I think it’s a good thing I think. I think, yeah, it’s a big ask to ask for an audience to pay attention to you for a chunk of time. It’s it’s a big ask.

And yeah, you can’t edit in a room. And so full respect people that are finding their audience on TikTok, I just hope they’re also getting on stage as much as they can as well, so it can match, so the quality of the online can match on stage. I find the comedians that have lasted up here are the traditional brick wall comedians. There have been shooting stars, and I’m not here to slag on anybody, but there have been people that come along and they’re stylized comics, you know, whatever your thing is like. You know, I’m the guy that holds a vitamin water all the time, and vitamin water guy, Oh my god, vitamin water guy.

You know, has like a great three years. Then everybody gets bored and goes back to Louis or Bill Burr or Seinfeld. Yeah, yeah, yes, I get what you say. I feel it’s yeah, yeah, it’s hard. It’s actually really hard to do stand up year after year and to constantly find stuff to talk about.

I know, comics, we shouldn’t complain. There’s people that work in hospitals and their frontline, and my husband’s a scientist, so look, there’s people that have actual jobs. Fully aware, but it is I will give a big shout out to us comics because it actually is really hard every year to turn it out, fire material, work on it, give it punchlines, make it funny. Yeah, it’s not the easiest thing. You know.

That’s why all of us want to do something else so bad sometimes, So it’s like, God, why can’t I just be a really good actor? Give me a year off. You mentioned your husband. Your triathlon bit is fantastic. I’ll recommend it to my audience that they go find it.

You did he do the one or does he do them regularly? He’s done a bunch and you know, speaking of like the TikTok staff. The reason I’m not anti it is because that triathlon clip that changed my career, and that was from online. That was back in the day when people watch Facebook videos. And so that triathlon bit years ago, what five six years ago now, just did that blow up viral thing when it just got millions of views and honestly, it just changed everything in about a week.

This I just got more bookings and more people started to like, look at me for other stuff. So that’s why I don’t want to, you know, nag too much on the TikTok staff because my career was really affected by on line stuff. So the triathlon bit is my a bit. That’s why, you know, if I was going to be I’ve got a fear that when I’m going to be like seventy doing some weird to our someone in a wheelchair who’s seventy with me will be yelling out, do the triathlon bit? Do you have to do it?

Or a variant of it? Is it like you’re you might be a redneck? If it’s look, let’s teasing fit people is such a universal language. And no matter where I go in the world, I do know that if I rip into people that run, I think it unites most audiences. So it is a It is a nice go to.

It’s definitely my comfort net. If I ever feel a bit nervous about a gig, I’ll be like, all right, let’s get into the track. So you know, so you’re also performing at me the mean Martin, Geela or Galla, let me ask you that question. My New York accent wants to say Galla, And then I go up to Montreal and everybody says Gela, And I don’t know what’s it’s Gala in Australia, but you know, all right, so we’ll let’s team up. It’s Gala.

Yeah. Yeah, So for that show, do you care what order you’re slotted or you’re going to just do what you were going to do. Yeah, I mean, I’ve already told they asked. They ask for scripts, and they ask for what you’re doing, and I’m assuming they might look at that and pick the order from that. I’m sure to be great.

I’m sure the people that decided who do stuff, they kind of try and pick someone from each different kind of flavor. I’m assuming, I mean, not to tell Montreal how to do their job, but no, I’m excited about that. Many years ago, May did Melbourne a couple of times, and so we’ve gigged together and big fan love to feel good that show. So yeah, I’m excited. That’s great.

The other thing on the international scene, I see a lot of you know, and I’m looking at your awards here winner Best Comedy, Adelaide Fringe winner, Best Newcomer, Best Comedy Show in the states. We don’t really do that, and I don’t know why now you shouldn’t. I don’t think you should. I mean, of course, will plug it that I’ve done that, so I don’t like it. I just think it should be who just get laughs, Make your show funny, make sure everyone in your audience has a good time.

Who’s to say, who’s funnier than on someone else? The UK Edinburgh Australia thing so heavily revolved around fringe festivals and hour shows. Everyone can get a bit in their head about awards and nominations, and I don’t think anyone wins from that. Just be funny, please, I’ll talk to both sides of your brain. In satellite radio up here, it’s serious around the comedy channels, and we used to do comedy contests and the comedians would lose their minds.

But the reason I was doing it as a radio programmer was to engage the audience. So we’d start out week one and go all right, who’s the greatest comedian of all time? George Carlin or Richard pryor you vote whatever. I don’t care who wins, and then like three weeks into it, it’s like, all right, this week it’s Richard Pryor versus Carrot Top, and the audience would leave us this back, you’d leave voicemails. This guy Johnny Mac running the radio station is such an idiot.

How could it possibly be care to But I’m sitting up my office thinking like, you guys are losing your mind. But comedians would hate when we would do bex versus Why. I mean, because they’d scare they’d lose. I mean, I’m all horrid if I’m winning. No, I mean I get I understand why as a comedy lover, you wouldn’t even think to us about that, and you’d be excited to vote and have a chat.

But then I get the other side. As the comic, you’d be like, why why compare everyone’s different? Yeah kind of thing. I mean, I get it. It was it was a radio bit.

I didn’t care who want as long as you called it. Yeah, I mean, you know, there’s bigger issues in the world. I think that’s fine. As long as I win, I’m fine. Final question for me, and who’s on your radar?

That’s probably I’m sitting here in a basement in New Jersey. That’s probably off my radar. Who are you into who should we look out for? Oh god, this is well, this is going to be very Australian based, isn’t it. No, that’s what I want.

Okay, Okay, so I’m trying to Okay, Okay, So Bronwyn Cuss, Blake Freeman and well they’re two. They’re two upcomers that I think have got the goods that I think will be potential aussy comments superstars. So check them out. Great, I’ll run the transcript and I’ll look them up. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I have a look at that there there.

I’m fans and oh god, now I’m freaking out that the other AUSSI comics are gonna hear this and then have a go up me for not mentioning shit. I’m I should just like be a politician now and list like thirty five Australian comedians fear to go and see. But I’ll have the mine and we’ll bouse you and I’ll run have a competition to get people to vote who they want more me or them. Thank you for your time. I appreciate the chat.

So you’re coming over to Montreal, say good day. Yeah. This is the awkward part where I don’t know how to end this, we stare at each other. So I’m just going to hit end and I’ll see some rest of the time. Enjoy San Francisco.

Thanks mate, he’s neath Valvo. You heard me mention the triathlon bit, and just from talking him for fifteen minutes, I don’t think he’ll mind too much if I play a small clip heer. So listen, get this, guys. Not long ago, my boyfriend Cody awful name, great guy, said to me, I’m going to do a triathlon and you have to come and watch and don’t be a bitch. That’s what he said to me.

Right, So I was like, I can do that because I might really nice. So the first thing he did was find a triathlon group on the internet called the Mountain Goats, and they have that written on the back of their T shirts like they’re okay with people knowing that. Anyway, they’re all counting their steps, you know, people that count steps. We’re all dealing with those people just counting the steps and just counting the steps. I mean, the step club at work got to hit ten thousand, gotta hit ten thousand.

No live for me today. I’m counting with steps. If you’re over two years old, no one gives a shit. How many steps you talk today? You start counting at two, you know, And these watches that I plug into laptops or these graphs to come up.

Here’s a little rule. The more things you watch can do, the less time Paper want to spend with you. Nate Valvo New Faces International Just for laughs, Montreal. What a great festival. If you didn’t make it this year, you still got a couple of days and you should definitely go next year.

The Shark Deck. I’m Jenny Mack with your Daily Comedy News. In the second half of today’s podcast, I’ll speak with Darcy and Jare. I didn’t know anything about them until the interview came up and I did some prep and then talked to them for like half an hour. They were really fantastic.

That’ll be in the second half. They are the host of Just for Last Montreal’s and New Faces, creators of This Afternoon. I continue to encourage you to listen to Mark Marin with his guest Jim Gaffigan. Like I did yesterday, I’m going to read an excerpt from the transcript that I created, and I’ll do some minor of voice acting. I’ll read Marin’s lines a little harsher.

Mark said, we’re different types of performers. Like just last week, I went to dinner with Milaney, krol Spade, Jessinik, Joe, Mandy, you know, and I never hang out with anybuddy outside of comedy clubs, and you know, it’s just a show business storytelling thing. And I realize, you know, I’m talking to Kroll and a couple of guys there talking about doing Vegas, and I’m like, I never think about doing Vegas, like I’m going to Vegas. Like now, there’s a little club off the strip that seats two hundred people in the arts district. I’m like, oh go there.

No part of me thinks they’re gonna like put a poster for me the casino and people in the casino are going to be like, I love that guy. I’m not trying to do a Mark Marriwn impression. I don’t have one, but he speaks a little more harshly than Jim Gaffigan, who said, see, I disagree with that promise.

Also not doing a Jim impression.

I think you totally would. So you do you see this is just insecurity? Yes, I think, well, you know, we’ve been doing this so long, for like twenty five years. You have that information that you’re applying to today. But my question would be would you enjoy it?

Well? I feel like the guy suppressions that, you know, because I still do comedy in my own way, and I think I’m okay with it. I have people, but I watched your special last night. I’m getting a lot of lass. But I realize, you know, you’re discplining around how you do your comedy, your ethic your work ethic.

It’s very much like the thing I noticed the most because I’ve watched the last couple of Specialist. I always watched the special You know, all your jokes are equally as good as they were last right, And you don’t think in terms of big closer. It’s just like someplace around fifty five minutes, you’re like all right and you walk off. But that to me is like it’s beautiful because that’s the specific job. It’s like I’ve given you enough.

Yeah, it was all pretty solid. I’m gonna go, and you know, like this is the job for me to wrench you out an hour and a half or two hours over a year, and I do that, it’s like life for death. And I’m desperately trying to be like, you know, why can’t I just lighten up a little bit? Jim said, right, well, that’s what I mean. It goes back to our initial thing, like there’s such a joy and putting out a special in a sense of completion, but also why can’t there be enough?

Like for me? For a while there, I was putting out a special a year, but I was like, there’s the joy in doing it, but why does it have to culminate, and the business is always shifting. Like when we started, people weren’t doing specials or performing. Marion said, everyone wasn’t doing specials. They were like they were still special I’ll pick up that thread tomorrow.

Here’s an article Up Early Tonight is the new late night show from Moms. What was this? Ah, Scary Mommy that’s an entertainment brand for Moms has teamed up with Huggies for a new four hour late night talk show. All right, a little paid product kind of thing. Nith Valvo Naith is the guest on tomorrow’s podcast, and I Like Naith a Lot nine fifteen, Mark Rebel nine thirty, Gigi Squad Live nine thirty, The Bald and Beautiful with Trixie Mattel ninth thirty, Daniel Slass nine thirty, Carlos Bajata nine thirty, Morland Wayne’s nine thirty, New Faces Unrepped nine forty five, Best of the Fest nine forty five, Russell Peters ten o’clock Surrounded ten o’clock, Adira Amram and the Experienced ten o’clock or Zilla Carlson ten o’clock, Genie A. Sheer at ten thirty, Arthur Simeon ten thirty, Donel Rawlings Midnight Surprise at midnight, May Martin at midnight, The Improv’s sixtieth anniversary show at midnight, Zach Zucker presents Stamptown at midnight, and ruben k Live and Intimidating. Another day of tough choices. I’m telling you, this festival is fantastic. If you still have time to get up there this weekend, go otherwise, go next year.

All right, if we were there, we would definitely hit that airplane thing at four o’clock. That sounds fantastic. All right, we got to pick an early show here. Oh, let’s do British. We haven’t done British yet.

I love seeing the British comedians. That’s one of the shows I like to hit every year, featuring Alan Davies, Genie Sheer, Josie Long and Jamali Mannox and ruben Ka hosted by Jim Brister. That’s always a great show. So let’s do British at seven, nine o’clock. Let’s do ninth Valvo right now.

I know you’re like, who’s nith Valvo? Trust me, by the end of tomorrow’s podcast, we’re gonna be like that was a good call. Johnny Mac. Plus, my advice to all of you for these comedy festivals is you know you don’t always want to go see the people you’ve heard of because you can watch them on Netflix, right, So bounce around and try some new things out. So we’ll do ninth Valvo at nine probably too tight to catch a ten thirty show if we did, probably Donnel Rollings is the move there.

And then at midnight, you know, Midnight Surprise May Martin, the Improv and Stamptown and Ruben Kay. I’m going to pick the Improv’s sixtieth anniversary show hosted by Mark Normand and it features Leon Morgan, Donel Rawlings, Felipi as far as A, Neil Brennan and a special surprise guests. I have a feeling the guests will be quite strong at that one, so that’s what we will do. The New Faces Creators Series at Just for Last in Montreal’s showcases the best new comedic voices we’re writing, performing, directing and producing content. The host this year are Darcy and Jare.

I was unfamiliar with them before just for a laugh, so offer them to me and I love them. I’m recording this just after speaking with them. I went like half an hour, I’ve doubled a time that was allotted. Really cool. So after just three years of creating content online.

They have a combined over four and a half million followers across platforms, with an average of fifty million views a month. So let me tell you about them a little bit. Darcy Michael is an actor and stand up comedian. He had a role in the Canadian TV sitcom Spun Out. He’s a traditional stand up then segued into TikTok.

And if you’re a regular listener, you know why I rolled TikTok a lot. But when you hear this conversation, I was like, all right, these guys are pretty cool. So how Darcy segued from stand up into the TikTok universe. They have a golden retriever named Yuma, and you’ll hear the story at the end of the interview. But a long story short.

They posted some videos of their golden retriever and they did really well.

And then they’re like, hmm, but I’ll let Darcy tell the story at the end of t…

And I’m going to leave this a little loose. So when I do these interviews, I just hit records so that we’re up and running, and I do the interviews, and then after the fact, I go back and I do intros like you’re hearing right now, but I’m gonna not cut this one up and you’ll hear why I started talking about a bug bite I got and it was officially pre interviewed, but I’m leaving it in. You’ll hear. Here’s Darcy and Jared love them. How you doing, I’m great?

How are you actually? I’m not great. I went for a run today and something that first. Yeah, that’s something bit the back of my head. So I’m fine except for the stinging in the back of my head.

I don’t know why I opened with that, but hi, So if you’re a drought starts to close someone and he John in New Jersey bit by something. We’re in trouble and if something really bad happens, I’ll tell the family to let you guys have the video. Yeah, it was like it’s a typical comedian. We’re like, is this going to affect the press?

All right, let’s start with the big topic.

Barbie or Oppenheimer. Oh this is a tough one. It were split down the middle. Share is gonna be Barbie, I’m gonna be Oppenheimer. I was reading.

I’m like, if you yeah, we’ll do both, but we have yet to decide ones first. Now I’m excited doing Oppenheimer in about an hour and a half. Really, yeah, my son wants to go. He’s college agent. I’m like, since when are you in two World War two historical dramas?

But it was his idea. I’m like, yeah, I’m in. I think it just comes down to the to the beard ful filmmakers. But yeah, it’s going to be. It’s interesting.

As a union member, I’m always like, oh, should I be going? Should I be waiting? Should I be? But those are two? There are two I can’t I actually can’t wait.

So segueing into content creation, I don’t want to ask you about that, Let’s talk about feeding the beast. So even with my little basement podcast world, I went out of my way to throw Barbie in an episode title, and what do you know, I’m getting more downloads than ever. Talk to me about that whole game. So, just to catch you up, I’ve been in radio thirty years. I teach a college class, and over the years I’ve explained to the students how I’ll have to just hold my nose and do content that maybe I don’t want to, but the right play is Barbie, so sure, let me keywords stuff, right, I lenge.

Yeah, we don’t do We don’t play the game of what’s hotter what’s not these days, like we have him for a couple of years, we’ve just basically been like what we put out what entertained us in hopes that it finds the right audience, and we’ve done sometimes sometimes it doesn’t entertain them. Sometimes we do these long form episodes on the YouTube and we’re like, we lose month, but we still do it because we look at it going Okay, in twenty years from now, we will be able to look back on every trip we ever took, because we’ve got these twenty minute episodes every week on YouTube of our touring of our travels and stuff. But we’re like they’re considered flops when you look at the views we get everywhere else. But I don’t care because like content we enjoy and it’s a night time capsule, Yeah it is for sure. Did you start out playing the game for lack of a better term, and evolve once we had enough critical mass?

Okay? Yeah absolutely, Like I was really like we we took off on TikTok early when during the pandemic, but I was very much what hashtags are trending, what topics are trending? Like, how do I how do we get in there? Spin? That was the biggest thing, was like if something was trending on TikTok, I’m like, where’s the funny in this trend?

What can we do that just is a little different from what everyone else is doing?

And now I’m just we’re so much lazier now.

I believe they call this resting on our laurels. We’re just on a small break. Yeah, I think we film we haven’t filmed anything for two weeks. We’ve just finished the first leg of our tour, and we’re just do you have a team helping with all these videos? Or is it YouTube grinding?

If we we grind it all? We have an editor for YouTube. Again, that’s why we lose money on YouTube. But I am a we’re both kind of control free because and so we’re like the time it’s going to take us to tell someone to do what we want, we can just go and do it. I totally understand that a different life, I was out, I was the boss of Comic Con Radio, and I had I had one of my assistants.

He’s Okay, here’s the plan for today this and I’m like, why don’t you just run that plan because I know what I want the edits to be. We flipped roles. Then my boss came by and he’s like, why are you editing tape? And exactly what you said. I’m like, I know what I want.

It’s just a minute, sounds quicker. I’ll just do it. I’m not too good to edit. That’s the thing, like I we come up of at a time, like I always go to our website. For the longest time, we couldn’t afford someone for my comedy webs so I went onto YouTube and taught myself HTML coding to build a website, and the same we did the same thing for editing.

We’re like, we can find the old teach out. Darcy’s adhd is he can hyper fixate when he needs to learn something, and it saves us money. And for the longest time, that was the motivator. Was like, Hey, we’re not making a ton of money all the time, so let’s teach ourselves how to do this ship.

And then now that we know how to do it, I’m like, hey, let’s keep all the mon…

Mind you, we are struggling this year. We do have to. We both are. We really hit a wall with bandwidth. So we’re trying to be like, like, we hired an assistant that does like more of the business side of things for us, because it’s just, you know, we don’t have time for everything and when it comes, I would wait rather spend all my time on creative.

Boy, it appears you’ve got a lot of brand deals which for people pays the deal pays the bills. Is that person doing that or did you guys develop all that and hand that off. No, we have a team for that. We’ve got Yeah, when we say we don’t have a team, I think that’s mowhere on the creative because we have four team just on the socials. They’re not doing our pushing for us.

And no, but like we’ve got the social team, the management team, and then the touring team. So but the social team handles all the brand stuff and then our manager Kaylee oversees everything. Now that we really think about it, we do have quite a few people working for us, but I’m the one editing. I’m the one we don’t I like to know that when you see a reply in the comments section. A lot of people assume it’s our assistants or our socials.

It’s us. Like, if you get a reply or if you get a like from one of our comments, it’s Jared and I that are doing it, and I think that will always be the case. I said that from the beginning. It was like, I want them to know because I know what it’s like when I get a reply from someone that I look up to or someone that I in the industry that I’m like, oh my god, was it actually did Lizzo like my comment? Was it actually Lizzo?

Is it Jennifer Coolidge? Yeah? Yeah, Jennifer Coolidge followed us up TikTok. I was like, oh my god, actually, Jennifer Coolidge, it wasn’t you said that? Up?

Great Darcy going from comedy stand up comedy to this and presumably that’s driving around show to show in a used car hustling, and I’ve got a team of fourteen, then that’s just got to be a great transition for you. It’s a dream come true. We talked about it in the new tour, but I quietly quit stand up in twenty eighteen. I just stopped because I was like, I can’t keep doing this. I’ve worked for eighteen years in this country.

I’ve been like, I’ve done everything that they could do. I had a sitcom, I filmed multiple specials, I did just for laughs every year, and it just nothing was changing.

And then the silly little app came along and did something that none of the o…

The algorithm was like, hey, we’re fare are the gay stoner dad’s out there? And where are the housewives that want a gay best friend? And I have found it? And yeah, it’s changed. Like I like to joke that he just needed to Yeah, he likes to call the credit for the career because it turns out you just needed a wingman.

But it’s the add The thing we say all the time is the attitude is gratitude these days, because we like we’re hey, we’re having the time we’re but also it’s just it’s don’t take it for granted. I know, we go like a go in. We’ve been in the industry long. Yeah, yeah, but we’re really like I think it’s also just like who doesn’t love the everyman’s story, you know, going from nothing and becoming and bringing the fence along for it. Yeah, I’m really I’m having the time all, you know.

Like even in the show that we’re touring right now, there’s one joke that I had said to Jaro was like, my dream was to always do this joke from my one of my specials in front of a thousand people at night. This first time I’ve had an opportunity, So I was like, I don’t care if people have seen this joke before. I have an opportunity to do it for a thousand people at night. I’m doing it because I want. It’s for me, it’s my like I worked hard, a special moment of the show.

It’s a special moment of the show for sure. It’s a full circle thing. And but I always use a reference for that that if you go to a music concert, you’re expecting to hear the great Yeah. Why, it’s a lot of them. It’s just the difference the fans don’t know it’s a hit it before we know, yeah it’s pretty great.

I’m pretty great. That’s awesome. So there’s five thousand guys who were eighteen years in a comedy didn’t cross over and are right there shaking a fist of the clouds, going dude, this guy’s a TikTok come here. Yeah, I saw twenty years ago. I saw that happen to Dane Cook whatever you think of.

But he’s just a MySpace comedian. No, he figured it out. He was smarter than you were. He started hustling and found a court. Like I remember being married at Dane Cook interesting.

I remember being jealous of that and starting in my space and being like, man, if I had twenty grand to invest in into marketing and stuff, I would do the same. I’d be in the same boat. Here’s the thing. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter where you break into the industry. If you’re getting butts in the seats, that’s the game.

That’s it. You’ve done it any their way. If you’ve got people that we always say Jar and I work in the currency of time. People are choosing to spend their time, whether it’s online or in person. We live in a finite world of time.

There is only so much of it. So if someone decides I’m going to take my time to spend with Darcian Jair, you can don’t be jealous, be inspired, Jair. You Yes, we’re not traditionally a performer and now I think Bill is so that has this will Ride been for you. You’re up on stage, you got a thousand people staring at you. Wild I feel I do feel a lot of guilt because I didn’t have to go through the trenches that most we like to do.

But there are talking about angry comedians. Jair’s eight show ever on stage will be at just for laughs. It’s eight time. Yeah, there’s would be some angry folks, So I do. I also have a lot of imposter syndrome.

First, you’ve earned it, but it’s at the end of the day you just got to trust in the writing. Trusted. I couldn’t do it without him on stage with me, leading me through and trying to derail me through the show. I really love to go off script. That’s my favorite part of what we’re doing well.

But it’s just like it’s a lot of fun. I’m having the time of my life. We had no idea that I was going to do well. It was great. He’s doing great, but no one’s doing what we’re doing, and that’s what I love.

But we’ve been together for twenty years and every night I look over at him on stage, like you’re on stage with me, this is. I’m just as shocked. Yeah, it’s great where I love it so much. He’s so bad, it’s great. I do.

I keep saying to him. It was like, do not get polished, because you will take the magic away from this show. You have to be the level you are because that’s what makes it so real for us and for the audio. I’m a legacy radio guy, and as I put together teams, I always say, I quote the rock, know your role, know who you are on this team. So for you guys, know who’s driving the car and know who’s coming in and just kill get out and pass the ball back.

It’s so important. Yeah, I’m gonna I’m the not, for a lack of a better term, for the straight man the show. Sure have you done Montreal yet? I’ve never been to Montreal, so this is my first time experiencing any of it. So I’m just I’m circling back to what Dorsey said about the haters.

It’s going to happen. I remember I think it was maybe it was JFL Chicago. I was walking up with my midday hosted Serious was a guy that went by Mark says High. We got out of the car and a relatively famous comedian with a semi successful podcast walked up to us and was like, who are you? I’m more yeah, but why are you hosting the show?

No? No, no, it was just like insanely, Chelsea, You’m just doing a chip like competition. Why are you tagging it? And so far, I always say, it’s not a pie, it’s not a pie, it’s again it. There is room for everybody to entertain.

And also quit taking your job. So seriously we’re slinging jokes, like all Jared and I want to do is make feel and make people feel joy. And if that is something you’re against, then maybe you need to look a little internal as opposed to I’ve never been jealous. Even with Dan Cook for example, I was never jealous. I was just get lit a fire where I was if he can do it, I can.

So I always say it to people. I’m like, if you’re experiencing jealousy, you’re experiencing motivation, inspiration, use it. You are very easy to talk to. Let me get to the just for last stuff before the publicists murder me. And so every year I go up for the new faces, the stand up ones on the Wednesday night.

I’ve never done new faces creators.

And now I have the notes in front of me and I can just read it.

But what is creators like? I get it. I’m a new face. Yeah, we joked her new faces. They picked two of the oldest rundown face system run it.

From our understanding, we can’t give away who is on the show yet. You’re gonna see some of the creators that are coming up in the industry with online content creating. They’re directing, producing, writing, starring in their videos. They’re doing what Jared and I have done for three or four years, and there’s some of the best and it’s I don’t know, this might be the first year that they’re doing it, but it’s say it’s about time because the industry across the board has ignored what is happening online for the longest time, and they’ve started to really be like, oh shit, like these people actually are holding audiences. These people are selling out theaters across North America and they don’t have you know, you’ve got to thank you.

I look at the streamers are taking notice, well, Steven, the networks are starting to take a little late in. But hey, that’s fine, Like you’ve got like you’ve got content creators that are making millions of dollars a year without management. And I love, yes, I love that there’s the artists are in control. You’ve got artists that are trending on Billboard Top hundreds that don’t have labels attached to them because of content, because of places like TikTok and Instagram and YouTube and stuff. So I think, if anything, this is the beginning of what will become a huge part of comedy festivals across the world because people want that.

We’re seeing it every night when we go on the road. People want to come and celebrate the people they are enjoying up online. Ask a teenager right now that our fan bases teams, But if they’re more excited about meeting Tom Cruise or Bryce Hall from TikTok, they’re gonna lose their minds seeing a TikTok. We noticed that even in south By Southwest last year. Oh yeah, when people were running up screen my name, I was all like, y’all know, there’s real celebrities around I how are you running to meet?

I was in Melbourne walking across the Anzac Ridge. Random dropped there, but my fifteen year old son is, oh my god, it’s so and so from Vine. I’m on Old Man Mountain going, what are you talking about? Why we’ll look excited about that? Dude.

Look at bow Burnam. He was Vine and now he’s just considered like a great comedic artist. But the industry ignored him while he was on Vine, and they’ve made the same mistake for the last few years with TikTok and it’s this is the most excited I’ve ever been to just for laughs, because I’ve never once had more meeting requests and I think this is my twelfth or thirteenth time it’s just for laughs, and I’ve had more meeting requests from people going into this, and I’ve said no to the ball hall. I’m like, god, yeah, I’m like I’m going to have fun. Yeah, he’s he’s set up.

I’m getting the full experience just for laughing. That summer camp for comedians. I can’t wait to go celebrate with them. Just see some good comics. What will your actual show beat?

Is it? You guys riffing between clips and then we all stare at the video screen like there’s no video element. It is full stand for the creators show, for the creators Yeah, creators show. Sorry, it was our stick. I know the Creator Show is gonna be showing highlight reels of those creators and then Jared are going to do sit down interviews with them, talking to them about the art of creating, their process and also what like who they’re enjoying and stuff.

But it’s really just gonna be yeah, like we want to know what their ultimate goals are. Yeah, where they want to bring their creation, because it’s gonna surprise you. Some of these people don’t they’re not interested in network TV. They’re not interested in doing lives. If they want to keep they will want to keep the control.

And you separately, you’re doing your own show up there. Just looking at the schedule, Yeah, we’re doing are no refunds to her. We’re doing her ninety minute show at the Olympia Theater and then I’ve got another panel that I’m doing as well. When I go see you, what is your live show? Like?

Oh, it’s weird, it’s chaos, it’s holesis, it’s wholesome, an wholsome at Jason, No, it’s stand up. It’s very much an autobiographical story of our relationship online. So we talk a lot about but we talked a lot about mental health, which means a lot of the people in the audience are mentally ill and we celebrate it. It’s a real mixed relationship. Yeah, are parenting, Like we’re Jar and I are a couple of old pegs.

We’ve got a twenty four year old daughter, we’ve been married for twenty years. Like, there’s not a lot of people with our story, and we found like that there were holes missing in our story the people online, so we thought a better way to sell them in a wild night of stand up. Well, I think everything we’re talking about here, however you deliver the content. It comes down to the audiences connecting with lack of a better word, the talent. You were the talent, right, But it’s that personal connection of oh, I want to spend time with these people.

No, it really is like it’s a fine line with parasocial of relationships because when you’re watching someone on your phone, it’s we call it the FaceTime effect where you actually feel such a close connection to the person when if we’re talking directly to the camera, the person on the other end feels like we’re talking. So we try to like balance that fine line because we also people that remember that we’re not friends no, it’s even in radio. I’ve seen over the years you’ll run into a listener and they’ll be like, hey, how’s your cat Fluffy? And you’re like, how do you know about my cat Fluffy? Answer is because in nineteen ninety eight, at six o two in the morning, he sent the cat’s name once.

And you have these super fans. I can only imagine with what you do as opposed to we were in New Dublin and we had people coming up asking where the dog, who was looking after the dog? People were resting from, who was where the plants are? And how are a tripped to Greece was like, it was wild to be like we went to when we went on this europe trip. To be honest, we went thinking we were going to be anonymous.

We were thinking we’ll have a bit of a break, a little bit of anonimity, and it was getting off the bus and happened the first person we sent for so cool. I’m trying too on these segments not to ask the thing that probably nine thousand other people have asked you, but maybe I did that anyway, But since you mentioned the dog, Okay, how’s the dog. She’s great, she’s so good, she’s going through a diet change. So all Jared and I do is talk about dog shit. We’ll be like, how was her boop?

Was it okay? From diarrheaa almost pick up a bull? So a few more days and we think it could be good. She’s the light of our life. Yeah, we wouldn’t be here without her.

We literally like, I don’t know if we’re running at a time or not, but really quickly. The only reason we started a TikTok channel because I had one for the dog when she was happy, and she went viral and I got jealous and I was like, my four month old golden Retriever has a hundred thousand fans and I’ve been doing this job. Talk about using jealousy to light a fire and to motivate and inspired. He didn’t post on her account until we passed her. I didn’t I screw you do in a single post until we have one hundred and one thousand and so we always joke, but it really is, I look at her all the time.

In a week, you gave me my career back. They are Darcy and jare How cool are they? And they’re hosting New Faces Creators today at Montreal just for Laughs.
